There were rumors about this on the Polish forum for some time now, but now it's official:

Orco Property Group takes the Warsaw residential market to a new height
(15/09/05 18:00 CET)

Orco Property Group and the Polish born, world renowned architect Daniel Libeskind have applied for planning permit and have made an official presentation to the city of Warsaw authorities for a high rise residential project on Zlota Street, Warsaw. In order to respond and complement the quality of the Warsaw skyline and the Palace of Culture, this iconic high-end residential building has been carefully and proportionately configured with a crown ascending to 192m in the Warsaw sky.
With this project, Orco intends to contribute to the wider cultural and social life in the center and bring the biggest capital of central Europe into the arena of the wider world of architecture and cities.

It looks kind of like a shard of ice. So it'll be equal 3rd tallest in Warsaw will it? In any case a great addition to a really nice skyline - the new buildings seem to go well with the magnificent Palace of Culture & Science.

What I like about Warsaw's skyline is the quality of the developments that are occurring, they are all really top notch projects. Great designs.

All it needs now is some more height, a signature tower 200-300m tall tower would be perfect.

Not bad... A bit of freshness in our skyline, though I usually prefer a more conventional style.

Heh, I really want my city to finally build something taller than PKiN (Palace of Culture and Science), preferably with roof height exceeding the spire height of the Palace.

Of course, it would be damn cool to have a real supertall in Warsaw (roof > 300m) but this is more than unlikely to happen in the foreseeable future.

^^^ the leases on the building to be torn down are up in summer of 2006.
The city still has not issued a permit and warsaw mayor became country's president so this might potentially slow down the bureacratic process. Anyways, I believe that the heavy machinery will appear somewhere around June/July. Sales are going good though, according to the polish forumers.

i think warsaw needs to keep concentrating on clustering this downtown of buildings together...once 1-2 more relatively large buildings are built, like this awsome transparent glass design..warsaw should accept a significantly taller 300-400+ tower

and I am sure many agree with me

^Hitler wanted Warsaw to be wiped of the face of the earth. He hated the city with passion and ordered it's total destruction, which was pretty much carreid out as by 1945 over 90% of the city was destroye. In addition to bombings the german army was ordered to destroy all surviving buildings and so they were systematicaly blown up one by one. Also almost the entire Jewish population of Warsaw was killed. I guess thats what Kasandra ment and was refering to.

The new Orco Property Group investment at 44 Złota street in Warsaw is a luxury high rise with 271 apartments and a wide range of additional services and facilities available to its occupants, including inter alia a 25 meter long swimming pool, sauna, spa, private party area, yoga room, fitness club and sun terrace, etc. The author of the building design is Daniel Libeskind, a world-famous architect of Polish descent. His designs have gained recognition everywhere they have been implemented. Libeskind is, among other things, the originator of the concept of rebuilding the centre of Manhattan in New York.
Based on the current market of luxury real estate, the Orco Property building will be the most luxurious apartment building in Poland. The investment will be located in the very centre of the city, near new, completed investments or investments currently at the final stage, such as Golden Terraces shopping and service centre, Warsaw Financial Centre, Hotel Intercontinental skyscraper, Rondo 1 office skyscraper.http://www.orcogroup.org/files/data/projects/4a2532b9-67dd-425e-903f-aafd373eba98/b/big_tower_V.jpg

I think it's a hideous building...why does Warsaw, a city that I wish would build taller and have better quality skyscrapers, with the exception of Rondo 1, settle for such an eclectic mix of architectural garbage. I hope Warsaw doesn't turn into another Rotterdam.
Libeskind is probably one of the worst architects in the world at the moment...but somehow he gets to design a lot of significant projects...I wonder why...

I don't know what you have against Rotterdam, but it surely isn't an "eclectic mix of architectural garbage" as your comment might suggest. I wish Warsaw had so much variation in architecture and such skyscraper density as Rotterdam does.

I don't know what you have against Rotterdam, but it surely isn't an "eclectic mix of architectural garbage" as your comment might suggest. I wish Warsaw had so much variation in architecture and such skyscraper density as Rotterdam does.

This Libeskind tower is a great project. Hopefully after it gets built, other awesome towers will follow.

I have nothing against Rotterdam...I think it's a lovely and unique place...but it does have an excess of avant garde architecture in my opinion...although it somehow works and doesn't generate an eye sore. Warsaw on the other hand is not the place to showcase anything fancy imo. I want to see some tall, imposing, and classy structures for the city to become a more respectable capital.
Looking at the bright side...the Libeskind tower is better than nothing...and may become sort of a landmark.

Changes around the corner

Luxembourg-based ORCO company may start a new trend in Warsaw—based on purchasing existing buildings only to demolish them and build new ones in their place. Until now, investors and developers active in the Polish capital have primarily built their facilities on vacant lots. In promoting its investment opportunities, Warsaw has offered a large number of vacant lots, even in the central districts of the city. But the number of such lots is shrinking, especially in the center.

ORCO bought the City Center, constructed in 1991, for zl.41.5 million and plans to replace it with a 192-meter residential high-rise with 340 high-standard apartments. This will be the tallest residential building in Warsaw. The company has commissioned the design from international architect Daniel Libeskind, his first design for a Polish city. ORCO’s decision was determined by the location. The project will be built in a central point of the city, next to the Złote Tarasy retail-culture-entertainment center—which the investor, ING Real Estate, plans to open next year—and the Rondo 1 office building soon to be completed by Hochtief Project Development.
Not far from the ORCO project, another high-rise is planned: an apartment building designed by leading Polish architect Stefan Kuryłowicz, with Polish-American Shalom Foundation acting as developer. Both buildings will be erected in the vicinity of Defilad Square, with its still-undeveloped areas around the Palace of Culture and Science. City authorities have intended to develop this square for years, but with little success. Now the initiative by private investors may finally mobilize public decision makers and work will actually get under way on Defilad Square. The planned project involves big-city architecture with service, office, cultural and tourist functions. The facilities would be built for money provided by private investors and from local government funds.

There is every indication that the contemporary Art Museum will be the first project to be created; an architectural competition for the preparation of a design for the project will be announced soon. (..)

The latest news:

Złota 44 – the beginning is near!

The promised gem of architecture, Złota 44 will be built in Warsaw. The City authorities have issued the planning permission for the unique apartment high rise designed by Daniel Libeskind. The tower, located in the very heart of the capital, will be ready by 2008.

Orco Property Group has obtained the planning permission for its new investment. The permit allows for the development of a 192-m high skyscraper, which has potential to become the most interesting and most spectacular building of its type in Europe. “The decision of the city authorities is of great meaning to us. For Orco it means that we can get the Złota 44 project going,” says Jean-Francois Ott, President of Orco Property Group. “The project was planned with Warsaw and its residents in mind. The fact that we have been given “the green light” for its development from the authorities of Warsaw is a huge success and source of great satisfaction”, adds Jean-Francois Ott.

Złota 44 – The Beginning of a New Era in the Life of the Capital

Not only is Złota 44 an example of the highest world standard in architecture, but Orco Property Group's investment will also be a first step towards reviving the city through combining residential and commercial developments. Worth noting is the fact that the new high rise will not be yet another office building which becomes deserted after dark, but a place bustling with activity 24 hours a day. “Złota 44 will be a key to the city's liveliness. It is natural that a town evolves together with changes in the lifestyle and changes to the architecture. This building will introduce such a positive change. We are convinced that it will revitalize the centre of Warsaw,” says designer of Złota 44, Daniel Libeskind.
Warsaw owes this unique skyscraper to Jean Francois Ott, President of Orco Property Group, who originated the project. According to Ott, Warsaw has great potential, but it lacks spectacular and modern architecture. Now that the planning permission has been granted, President of Orco believes that the centre of the Polish capital city has a great chance to become one of the most interesting places in Europe.

Not only will Złota 44 be unique for its spectacular architectural design, but also for the modern solutions which will be introduced in a building of this class for the first time. The luxury apartment building will be built using the highest standard environment-friendly technologies applicable to this building.

Libeskind Does Warsaw Skyscraper

This is Daniel Libeskind's planned residential skyscraper in Warsaw, the capital of Poland.
Called Zlota44 after the number of floors it has within and designed for the Orco Property Group, a company with a wide range of developments throughout the Euopean continent, the tower will contain 251 new apartments right in the heart of Warsaw.
As well as the high level residential accomodation there will be facilities contained within for residents including an impressive 25 metre long pool, sauna, spa, and even a private party area so that occupants can schmooze with friends with the impressive Palace of Culture and Science as a flood-lit back-drop.
The building is inspired by the sun shaped in an arc giving it the curving form that is has that flows into the sharp pinnacle. This arc has a recessed block behind it that takes the main rectangular bulk of the building in it offering efficient floorplates to the developer.
With appearance, the idea is that the highly reflective glass cladding will turn the tower blue on a sunny day whilst at night become a transparent beacon lighting up the skyline thanks to the lighting within.
Inside the building facilities management will be automated complete with computer controlled lights, heating and cooling and a sophisticated house control system that every resident will be able to access via remote control that even includes operable facade panels.
This should help add to the light and airy interior also designed by Libeskind. Every apartment will have almost complete glass curtain walling and floor to ceiling heights of 2.95 metres which for a residential building is impressive in an age when too many new build tall buildings have ceilings you can almost bang your head on.
Once built the building will be 192 metres tall, making it the third tallest building in Warsaw and doing much to bulk out the core of towers. The construction start is scheduled for the first quarter of 2007 and completion is estimated in 2009.
The apartments were launched on the market last Tuesday only eight days after the scheme was approved by the planning authorities in Warsaw and promisingly, the penthouse has been sold along with 27 others at the time of publication of this article which is pretty good going.
It will also be the second tallest residential building in Europe beating the Turning Torso in Malmo, Sweden by a mere two metres but fall way short of Triumph Palace in Moscow.

The Warsaw cluster IMO is one of the best looking in Europe.... Not the highest, not the most dense, but rather pleasing to the eye.

Glad to see this new addition

Nice tower, Warshaw is doing quite well. And another 'hit' for Besix also, it looks like they are the #1 towerbuilders at the moment.

Ok, thought it was @ me.
Born Polish, but Duck - sorry Dutch nationality. I know how to spell Warsaw/Warschau/Warszawa/Varsovie, but made point about unnecessary remark on someone's fault typing. That's it. What's all this excitement about, I really don't know.

And Amshterdam will be probably Amsterdam you see after eating a lot of mushrooms. :D
I co zabolało?

Warsaw city's authorities has given to Orco Property Group the permission to build Złota44!!!:cheers2:

Now we only have to wait 14 days for this decision to gain legal effect (if there won't be any objections-but there shouldn't be any).:)

The latest news from www.orcogroup.com

Orco Property Group receives building permit for its flagship residential tower - Złota 44

WARSAW. Orco Property Group, a leading investor, developer and asset manager in the Central European real estate and hospitality market, is proud to announce that on December the 5th the company received a building permit for its flagship project – Złota 44.

- Great cities need great investments. Złota 44 is a unique building dedicated to Warsaw, inspired by its people and the renaissance of the city. We are proud to bring this new landmark which will permanently change the skyline of Warsaw - said Jean-François Ott, President & CEO of Orco Property Group.

The 192 meter tall tower will be erected in the heart of the city. Thanks to its remarkable shape, sustainable technology and state-of-the-art architecture by Polish-born architect Daniel Libeskind, it is one of the most innovative and ground-breaking projects in Poland.

- It is delightful for us, as well as for all inhabitants of Warsaw, to know that the city has approved our plans to help create new image of the capital. – underlined Jean-Claude Moustacakis, Złota 44 Project Director.

Warsaw residents will not only enjoy the new sky line promised by the building, but also thoroughly regenerated landscaping around the tower - a green urban zone facilitating both public access and rest areas.

Złota 44 will offer its residents accommodation and services of the highest standard. The impressive 54-floor structure will be home to 251 fully finished and equipped residences, with amenities including a concierge service, sundeck, 25-meter swimming-pool and sauna.

The first residents of Złota 44 will move in during the first semester of 2010. The general contractor – Besix – is completing preparation works on the former city centre shopping mall site after its demolition, where Złota 44 is going to be erected.

The building construction will start immediately after the decision is validated and will last 28 months.
