View Full Version : Libeskind's new skyscraper will rise in Warsaw
Koniaczeq September 16th, 2005, 06:57 AM Libeskind's new skyscraper will rise in Warsaw
Michał Wojtczuk 16-09-2005
Daniel Libeskind, one of the most renowned architects in the world, has designed the tallest residential skyscraper in Poland. It will be located in the heart of Warsaw, right next to the Palace of Culture.
Libeskind was born in Łódź, but now lives in New York. He achieved fame through his unique project of the Jewish Museum in Berlin, and the Freedom Tower, which will be built on the site of the World Trade Center in New York. Yesterday in Warsaw, he presented his newest project to the city authorities -- a 192 meter, 45-floor, residential tower.
"While designing this, I thought of how the Polish eagle had been stripped of its crown for so long, so the top will remind of a crown," he said. "The mass of the building is shaped in a way that will make it look different from each side," so it will be more interesting. "Covered with glass, it will give the impression of a very light building, as if flowing in the air. This area will be bustling with life, because it will be used for apartments, not offices. On the ground-floor there will be an art gallery, restaurants, and cafes. Because of this, public space will be increased."
The skyscarper will be built on the site of a current Warsaw shopping center constructed in 1991. The Luxembourg investor, Orco Property Group, paid 41.5 million zł., just so it could demolish this building and use the plot of land for Libeskind's work.
"The work of such a famous architect will raise the standard for future designs," says Michał Borowski, the head architect of Warsaw. "This investment ideally fits into our plans of constructing new buildings around the Palace of Culture. For example, the Museum of Modern Art."
The building is to be ready by 2008. The Palace of Culture (231 meters) will still be taller, but only because of its spire. "My intention isn't to cover the Palace, which I am fond of, afterall -- my mother took me to its official opening 50 years ago," says Libeskind.

Phobos September 17th, 2005, 12:07 AM Great for warsaw!
Most of Libeskind's skyscrapers have a very nice slender design, and it seems this one will not be an exception.
Go Warszawa!Go,Go,Go! :colgate:

Lucky Luke v.2 September 17th, 2005, 06:47 PM 3? You mean the two other Hilton complex towers?
No. I mean Libeskind tower (192 m ), new Kurylowicz tower ( ~160 m ), JEMS tower (~140 m ). THe Hilton Complex will have 3 towers (~90m )
All of those towers are waiting to be approved ( and to suprise you Borowski has no problems with them  )
SoboleuS September 17th, 2005, 06:50 PM ^^
Locations of these towers are shown on this map:

man i have to get back onto the Polish forum, Im so not up to date...it's a shame.
Are there any renderings for these proposed buildings? If so can someone please post them.
Also, I think we'll need an update of what the Warsaw skyline will look like in a few year with buildings completed.
london-b September 17th, 2005, 10:23 PM I don't know about this, a bit too different.
wholagun September 17th, 2005, 11:10 PM I don't know about this, a bit too different.
In my opinon this is still okay. What i find differnet is the London Swiss tower, and the London bridge tower, both those just don't seem to fit in. IMO.
I think Warsaw needs something modern and ambitious like this, everything is too boxy.

Paolo September 18th, 2005, 04:47 PM great job markus
what interesting, most of them are residential towers, and there is only one hotel and one office tower...
and one more thing - three Warsaw highest are not visible on this photo: PKiN and IC are hidden behind Rondo tower, and photo was made from WTT...
wholagun September 18th, 2005, 05:33 PM I thought there was a lot of cranes in the Warsaw skyline last year, it'll be madness come 2006.
Warsaw is finally filling in the gaps, which I am pleased to see. I'm still eager for the city to start work on Plac Defilad.
Can't wait for the renderings to come out for all those buildings.......
mic of Orion September 18th, 2005, 05:36 PM I like this project, think would bring great modernity to Warsaw Skyline along with other towers nearby would look spectacular...
lukay September 18th, 2005, 08:32 PM It's interesting that we are starting to learn about all of those new residential buildings almost at the same time. Theres a big chance that several of those towers will start rising at the same time cause the sooner u build your building, the greatest is your chance that your appartments sell well and quickly. I like this competition.

Now it's going to look like it should :eek2:
Maybe that's not Frankfurt or London but definitively looks smart.

Imagine a 38 mln country, which has a very fast economic growth, imagine a capital city which is a major financial and business center of this country, a city which is going to double it's size in the next 20-30 years - now You have the answer
System_Halted October 9th, 2005, 11:02 PM Damn! I love those kind of towers so much. :cheers2:

De Snor November 22nd, 2005, 02:25 PM Simply a slender building , a great design but I don't like the colour.
I would rather see two different shades of the same colour , one for the straight part and another one for the curved part.
Frankfurt must be jealous of this :naughty:
bambam November 22nd, 2005, 03:07 PM The facade looks like the sarcophagus of chernobyl! It "is" a wonderful building but the facade is so ugly.. maybe it will looks nice at night :) !
markus1234 November 25th, 2005, 01:05 AM the facade does not look ugly and the colour is just beautiful  pure glass
Look at the original renderings here.

goschio March 1st, 2007, 08:14 AM Very nice. Bravo.
premier April 13th, 2007, 01:07 AM The works on the demolishion of the City Center (Building in place where the new tower will be build) started today. It will last for up to 5 months.
:banana::banana::banana:
kostya April 13th, 2007, 11:29 AM Fantastic! But somehow doesn't remind of what Libeskind is used to. Anyway, it's great! :okay: !
Fallout April 22nd, 2007, 02:30 PM Tp be honest, I am a little uncertain about this building. It looks like it was designed to maximally stand out from the surrounding. And Warsaw' centre is already mostly mad of buildings that stand out of each other.
premier April 22nd, 2007, 06:06 PM But this one will stand out in a positive way, right? So as long as it's gonna be good quality (and I presume that it will be ;)) than everything should be alright :)
Also, skyscrapers are ment to stand out :)
Melinda August 10th, 2007, 09:06 AM Tha facade looks too cold for my taste. But the shape is very nice!

Assurbanipal December 7th, 2007, 12:57 PM Excellent news. This tower has amazing design, maybe even better than stunning Rondo1.
