10 Obviously, I am a little biased because I live here. I think that we need to fill some of the gaps with 300+ skyscrapers, Indianapolis might build some 250-300 ft. condos pretty soon.

kinda generic. One somewhat tall building, but not a whole lot else that catches the eye. Not extremely modern looking either. The finer details of the city aren't reflected from a distance in the skyline. 6

I'd give it a 7/10. A lot of gaps and bland buildings.

The skyline will get filled in a little more in the coming years with the planned 20-30 story hotels and apartment/condo buildings. Hopefully another large building like the Bank One tower gets built in the next decade.

Indy is an anomoly in the north... in that it has little in the way of interesting pre-WW2 architecture... though it does have some nice short gems like the Chamber of Commerce Bldg and Majestic.

The 49 story Bank One is awesome, but the rest of the skyscrapers are merely boring boxes... and it seems that all the buildings have a similar color and pattern to them... very beige/white

I do like the way the buildings are positioned though... really makes a dramatic affect

Bank One is tall but is it good architecture? No.... Des Moines, Charlotte, and even Louisville have built better signature towers. In addition to this, the rest of the buildings offer little in the way of interesting design. So I've always found this skyline somewhat below its potential.

Still not bad 6.5/10

Thats a nice view from White River. I wish Indy's bridges and riverfront was more decorated with lights outlining them, and more pretty lamps like some cities have.

Another thing, I wish the Bank One Tower's two spires have a few strobe lights around it, blinking all day, like you see in Chicago; that would be so awesome! The only thing close to that is the little strobe on the flagpoll on top of the AUL tower.

Yeah, I also wish that Bank One would change the top colors for holidays (like red, white, and blue for 4th of July and green and red for Christmas), same with the top of the Market Tower. We need to add some lights below the bridges like Chicago has on the draw bridges.

Skyline 7 because it does need a little more... downtown 10 because it is vital and clean and there is much more to do than in over 50% of the decayed hells of US Downtowns. Indy as a whole 9, it is a great place that is much overlooked because many are obsessed with dirt and overpopulation.

cwilson758
July 20th, 2004, 10:13 PM
Of course, I too can be a bit biased, as I was once a planner for the City of Indianapolis, so I give it a 7.5. The Bank One Tower (soon to be renamed Chase Tower) is a great anchor right in the center of the city.

Four new towers have been proposed, with all to be completed by 2006.

Currently, the Conrad Hilton, at 23 stories, is under construction. Two residential towers on the former site of Market Square Arena will begin construction in October, and due to significant demand, they will now be 30-stories each (originally planned as 22-stories each). Finally, mall-magnate, Simon Property Group will construct a new 18-story tower with construction to begin in September.

I know that none of these will be over 500-feet, but will definately fill some gaps to the skyline.

I agree with Naptown, I'd like to see a few 300 ft. condos, and perhaps highrises to fill some of the gaps. Eli Lilly would be nice if they build a new 300-400 ft. tower at it's location facing I-70.

I personally would love to see one more tall the height of the BankOne Tower off on it's own, not clustered with the other towers; maybe a few highrises surounding it.
I REALLY would like to see the BankOne Tower's spires with a few blinking strobe lights, like the John Hancock and Sears Tower in Chicago.

At least the rectangle box known as Indiana Square will look different after the new curtain wall is built on it. It looks terrible right now with all the sheet metal on the NW and SW corners. Yes the downtown is very small but unique in how the design of the streets are as they spoke out from Monument Circle. Also the Lucas Oil Stadium will be an interesting addition.

Rate Indy's skyline compared to what? The skylines of the world? Skylines of the US? Skylines of Indiana? It would change depending. I give it 6/10, not enough density for a city of it's size and overall architechture is pretty bland. Downtown is cool though, there is a diffence between a nice downtown and a nice skyline

well, a new 44-story tower is proposed, making that 3 towers over 30 stories due by 2010. A lot of infill that is constantly going on is making Indy jump up the charts...

The new 44-story will be the City's 2nd-tallest and will be built a few blocks south of the core, so it will really elongate the skyline much like Atlanta. It is a Hotel-InterContinental and will really make a big impression on Indy.

I have no idea why everyone is saying it's so weak, because it isn't. you guys looked at the pictures before you said that, right? look what Indyman wrote about the population. I actually really enjoy it. it's very nice. 9/10

What is the population of this city?

According to the official statistics it's about 780 000 people in the city and approximately 2 million in metro.

This is typical american city. According to the statistics it has more or less the same population as Zagreb, Croatia but it looks much smaller than Zagreb. I like the skyline though and gave it 7/10.

hmmm I'll give it a 5 considering it's population, it really should be better, though I like the tallest and maybe these pics don't do it justice, I'm sure it would look more impressive in real life.

An OK skyline. so 8. Wait... does Indianapolis have the same population as Mississauga? I wondered about that.

If it does, Indy should be inspired by Mississauga.
