This aerea has actually 2 plots and not just one, and that might explain the clash between Park Plazza and Rolex.

The site where they started working, is the one next to Damas Tower, while the other site next to it, still has the ACC site offices in there. I think ROLEX tower willbe build next to Damas and Park Plazza will be build on the next plot facing the 21st Century tower, oposite the service road in between.

If this is confirmed, then the thread has to be amended to ROLEX Tower and maybe open e separate thread for Park Plazza.

^^ Dennis, don't be confused by Stephan's posts; no offence to anybody but please listen to the people that knows well the aerea. Park Plazza by Woods Bagot will not be starting in there in a long, long time.

There are two plots in between DAMAS and 21st Century towers, and construction is starting on ROLEX TOWER designed by SOM. The plot where it will be build is next to DAMAS Tower 1 and the site is cleared and SWISSBORING is already mobilised and ready to start (Pictures on Post 46). At the same time, the site offices for the contractors of Rolex Tower, are located right in the middle of the adjanced plot, where Park Plazza is belived to be build; that's why I'm saying PP it will not be build there soon.

However exist a very small possibility that both SOM and Woods Bagot bid for the same project, used to be called Park Plazza and the SOM design was choosen and then the project was renamed to ROLEX Tower.

Whatever the case, please RENAME this thread to ROLEX TOWER, 53F, mixed use and close the other thread with the same name, or you can just merge in here the posts from overthere.

Rolex lends name to new tower in Dubai

By Ivan Gale, Staff Reporter

Dubai: The world's top watch brand is lending its name for a new 63-story mixed-use tower along Shaikh Zayed Road.

The Rolex Tower will be built by Ahmad Seddiqi and Sons, a real estate developer and the exclusive retailer of Rolex's premium watches in the region.

Patrick Heiniger, Rolex CEO, who was on hand at the cornerstone-laying ceremony yesterday, said Rolex's involvement in the project is by name alone and the watchmaker did not participate in financing or designing the project.

Features

A tall, slender building with an all-glass facade, the structure will house ground floor retail outlets, 30 floors of commercial space, and 23 floors of residential apartments, topped by several floors of penthouses. It will be completed by the end of 2009.

Dubai Contracting Company (DCC) has been selected as general contractor for the building, which will be located a few blocks from 21st Century Tower in the heart of the high-value Shaikh Zayed Road area.

This the second development DCC has worked on with Ahmad Seddiqi and Sons. In 2004 they completed the Capricorn Tower, also along Shaikh Zayed Road, with 36,000 square metres of built-up space.

Rolex Tower was designed by the Chicago firm of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, designers of Burj Dubai and London's Canary Wharf. The value of the project was not disclosed.

The Dubai-based watch retailer's relationship with Rolex goes back a half-century, when Ahmad Seddiqi secured exclusive agreements to merchandise Rolex, Omega and other Swiss watches in the Gulf.

Rolex CEO, guest of honour at cornerstone ceremony for Ahmed Seddiqi and Sons' new Rolex Tower

Mr. Patrick Heiniger, Chief Executive Officer of Rolex SA, will take the ceremonial trowel to lay the cornerstone for the new 63-storey Rolex Tower today on Sheikh Zayed Road.
United Arab Emirates: Sunday, February 18 - 2007 at 16:34 PRESS RELEASE

http://www.ameinfo.com/images/news/6/35886-rolextower.jpg
(from left to right): Mr. Abdallah Yabroudi, Managing Director of Dubai Contracting Company, Mr. Abdulmagied Seddiqi, Ahmed Seddiqi and Sons, Mr. Abdul Hamied Seddiqi, Ahmed Seddiqi and Sons, Mr. Patrick Heiniger, Chief Executive Officer of Rolex SA, Mr. Hans Hauser, Consular General - Swiss consulate

Principal attendees at the event will include Mr. Abdulmagied Seddiqi and Mr. Abdul Hamied Seddiqi of Ahmed Seddiqi and Sons, developers of the tower, Mr. Abdallah H. Yabroudi, Managing Director of Dubai Contracting Company, turnkey contractors for the building, as well as His Excellency the Swiss Consul General.

Much like the brand name it proudly carries, the Rolex Tower will be an embodiment of perfection, setting new standards in taste, elegance and functionality. The Rolex Tower will be an outstanding place to live, work, and shop. The luxurious ground floor and mezzanine will house a variety of high-class retail facilities. Offices will occupy the next 30 floors, giving new meaning to quality in working environments.

Atop the offices will be 23 floors of superb residential rental apartments, while ultra-elite penthouses will enjoy their traditional place of prestige at the top. This slim, beautiful, 63-storey glass monument will be Dubai's new achievement in architectural elegance. The Rolex Tower was designed by the Chicago firm of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM), which has a world-class reputation for mega-projects.

Architects of London's Canary Wharf and of Burj Dubai, SOM are widely recognized for design excellence.

The turnkey construction contract for the Rolex Tower has been awarded to the Dubai Contracting Company (DCC), a firm with an excellent international reputation. The Rolex tower is expected to be completed in less than 24 months.

The Rolex Tower is the largest and most ambitious of Ahmed Seddiqi and Sons' real estate developments to date. It will enhance the company's reputation as a significant contributor to the skyline of Sheikh Zayed Road.

It will also symbolically unite Time and Place, the two realms of Ahmed Seddiqi and Sons business activities - the retail network of legendary timepieces and development of distinguished real estate projects.

In one of Joobn's Burj Dubai pictures from his balcony, it could be seen that for the parking of Rolex Tower they have already made the perimeter wall and dug up the pit, even using extra reinforcement struts to keep the walls stable. It is interesting becouse they don't seam to have dug up the site of the tower itself yet.

the SZR is getting to look insane, the damas towers are perfect IMO and next to them they are building another nearly perfect tower the rolex, not just a filler like it is in other cities usual.

OFFTOPIC: what will be build between the rolex and 21 century?

btw they should remove the al kewakeb buildings and build instead of them 3 fine new towers.

AltinD

Does anyone else think the core should have been in the center of the floorplates? As the image (posted by Malec) shows, the core will stand out at night. In my opinion, it looks really bad. Does the core also extend to the other side of the tower (the side facing the Damac Towers)?

This tower has 2 separate central cores. I don't think it will be a visual problem because the sides of the tower would be very close to the other 2 towers on the side. Plus I think this allow for separate elevator shafts for the commercial and residential part, which means also separate entrances for them.

I think it is a clever solution and designed with the location and surrounding area in mind.

Broken glass rains from Rolex Tower

By Mohammed N Al Khan, Staff Reporter
Published: June 21, 2009, 23:07

Dubai: Drivers and road workers were shocked yesterday afternoon after shards of glass rained down upon them from a tower on Shaikh Zayed Road.

At about 3pm yesterday a 3.6 metre by 1.5 metre sheet of glass, being installed on the 50th floor of the Rolex Tower, shattered and its shards showered the Shaikh Zayed service road.

Pedestrians and workers scrambled for cover after hearing a warning call.

The under-construction Rolex Tower is next to the construction site of an RTA Metro station. A worker at the Metro site spotted the glass shattering and was able to yell out a warning before running for cover himself.

Fortunately nobody was injured. The two cars driving by at the time took minor damage; the most severe being a cracked windshield.

Dubai Contracting Company LLC (DCC) is building the tower.

"A sudden gust of wind caused the sheet of glass to slam against the side of the building as it was being lifted to be fitted into place," said Ebrahim Emara, DCC Project Engineer for the Rolex Tower, who was on site at the time of the accident. "The wind also allowed for the debris to be blown beyond the safety cover we had built."

"At first I though it was hail when I heard the cluster of sharp bangs on the roof of the car," said Salahuddin Ghulam, a taxi driver for Metro Taxi whose cab was damaged from the falling shards.

DCC said it will be sure to reimburse the drivers for any damage done to their vehicles.

^^ Nothing. It is just a good looking box thanks to the facade that fills a previously empty plot.

Dubai: Seddiqi & Sons Investment, the real estate arm of the UAE's leading timepiece retailer, Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons, Sunday launched the Rolex Tower on Shaikh Zayed Road near the DIFC, the first of its kind in the Middle East and the only branded Rolex Tower globally not owned and managed by the watchmaker itself.

The Rolex Tower is the result of the 50-year partnership between Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons and Rolex, the international watchmaker.

Created by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, the architects behind the Burj Khalifa and Canary Wharf, the Rolex Tower in Dubai offers 25 floors of two-and three-bedroom apartments, including two penthouses, as well as 31 levels of commercial space, and a ground floor for retail offerings. The Rolex Tower's design, finish, views and services are the hallmarks of its status as the premiere address in the heart of the city's business district.

"This venture marks Rolex's first endorsement of the Middle East's property sector, and to be entrusted with the Rolex brand is a testament to the company's collaboration with Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons over the last 50 years. The launch of the Rolex Tower demonstrates our conviction that quality and service are among the most vital considerations whether buying a watch, finding a home, or building a business," Abdul Hamid Seddiqi, Vice-Chairman, Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons, said in a statement.

The materials and expertise deployed in constructing the Rolex Tower underscore the nature of the building, with 40,000 metres of aluminium and glass being used for the exterior, 3,385 tonnes of steel and 29,150 cubic metres of concrete underpinning all baths and public areas. Residents can enjoy IP TV and video on demand, complemented by high speed wireless access, while businesses in the Rolex Tower will make use of keyless entry, controlled floor access and secure, generous onsite parking.

Bruno Meier, Rolex Managing Director, took part in the official launch of the Rolex Tower and said, "More than half a century of working with Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons has confirmed that the Middle East is a key growth destination for the Rolex brand. The Rolex Tower, as the first of its kind in the region, reflects our shared commitment to a lifestyle encompassing precision, elegance and reliability."

Calling card

With its lobby as the ‘calling card' for the new Rolex Tower, the dedicated entrance is complemented with a bespoke artwork by Dubai-based artist James Clar of the Traffic gallery, entitled Soundwave. The seven-metre polished stainless steel sculpture represents the actual waveform of a human voice saying ‘Rolex Tower' and is suspended 2.5 metres above the lobby of the new building.

Dubai Contracting Company (DCC) who had previously completed the Capricorn Tower among other landmarks on Shaikh Zayed road was selected as the turn-key contractor for the building.

Abdullah Yabroudi, CEO of DCC said, "Our mandate was to achieve the highest levels of distinction from both a residential and commercial perspective, and to create the benchmark in our portfolio of turn-key properties.

"With custom-designed interiors, superior materials and a unique architectural design, the Rolex Tower is a work of art that is reflective of the impeccable standards that have been set by Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons."
