View Full Version : Should They Get Rid of The Penny?

I would say definately YES!

The penny has got to be the most worthless and useless coin! Many stores really don't care if you're missing a penny or two anyways and most people don't even want pennies for change. Rounding up or down to the nearest five cents shouldn't be that much of a hassle.

I use them, when somthing is $5.01 I can pay with a $10bill and give a penny. Like partybits said you can throw them at bums.

Don't round to 5 cents, just drop the entire digit and stick with tenths of a cent.

This kind of churlish sentiment is the kind of thing we have to endure if we let people from surrey post.

Both the American and the Canadian penny!

RBT brings up an excellent proposal, simply round off to the nearest tenth. As inflation hits both dollars, just like the French franc (where centimes were essentially all but forgotten), the dollars will no longer need any cents. This is the first step.

What would become of fine institution such as the "Leave a penny/Take a penny" tray, the $9,99 prices, etc?!

They need the Pennies. How would you give back change if the total came to say 6.83 and you gave 7 bucks?

How about we get rid of PLUS TAX?
That way like in Europe we can just say, GIMME $5.70 TOTAL.

*Canada now*: Hmmm...what do I want to buy today...a coffee? Okay it's $0.99
hands cashier a dollar. No it's $1.15.
*Canada in better real life times* Hmmm... coffee on the board says $1.15, I guess I can have it READY AND NOT DIG THROUGH THE GODAMN POCKETS AND CONSOLE OF MY CAR TO FIND ALL THE GODAMN TAX CHANGE!

Yep pretty sure that's the way it's gunna be thanx.

I voted yes, but with the proviso that it makes economic sense for the mint (and the rest of the country) to do so. The Australian dollar is only worth slightly less than the Canadian dollar (I believe it was pretty much equal around 2000). The Aussies seem to be doing ok without pennies, with their lowest denomination being the 5 cent coin. Basically everything is sold with the price tag rounded to the nearest .05.

Keep in mind that any VAT/GST in Australia is already included in the price of all goods and services. Not sure why Canada doesn't do this, but that's a whole other can of worms. Point is it is definitely feasible, but I guess the decision will be based on whether or not it would be beneficial.

even though i voted no... i say YES... ELIMINATE IT!.. then all the pennies lying around in my apartment are worth more... since no more will ever be made again and i can live a life of luxury by selling all my "priceless pennies"! muahahaha... =_=''

I think some of you are missing the point. If we elminate the penny then we no longer have to pay tedious prices like $17.74 anymore. It would be much simpler to pay by the nearest five or ten cents. The only reason they have pennies today is to pay those extra 1 to 4 cents anyways which is pretty worthless. BTW, pennies aren't even worth as much as to make one.

And actually, bums don't even give a shit about pennies anymore.

Get rid of them. I almost never use pennies and instead just accumulate them. It got to the point that I donated every last penny in my house to a charity for Cystic Fibrosis, as much to help out as to just get rid of the damned things.

is it true that if you throw a penny off of the empire state building and it hits someone in the head it will kill them

Well there are two problems with that theory:

1) At some point the penny will reach terminal velocity and it wouldn't go faster. I'm not sure if it would be fast enough to kill someone.

2) The wind currents around the Empire State Building probably wouldn't permit the penny to reach the ground. I have heard that once some guy tried to suicide by jumping off the building, and didn't succeed, but was seriously injured when he hit the first tier down...

Well let's not get rid of them if it encourages more people to donate!

is it true that if you throw a penny off of the empire state building and it hits someone in the head it will kill themI'm afraid the math works against you on that one. Pennies have a rather low terminal velicoty due to air-resistance for the impact to have a serious effect on an otherwise healthy person.
