I passed by the project today work is going on there full force there were lots of people around and lots of movement was going on. They've put up lots of beautiful Date Palms right at the main entrance and they each have lights underneath then creating a really pretty effect at night time. The Dolmen Mall sign is up. A friend of mine who works at Next has said that the mall is slated for an October- early November opening.

Retail chains: Carrefour’s new Karachi store, the first among many

Carrefour – the world’s second largest retailer after Walmart – is finally coming to Karachi, two years after its first Pakistani store opened in Lahore. Company executives say the store could open later this month, though they refused to provide a specific date.

The store will be part of the Hyperstar brand name used by Carrefour in several locations around the world. The French giant’s presence in Pakistan is part of its joint venture with Dubai-based Emirati conglomerate Abdul Majid al-Futtaim Group.

“The work at our Karachi store is in its final stages,” said Mubashir Jalili, Hyperstar Pakistan’s vice president for business development. “We want to launch it soon after Eid,” he added – without giving a specific date.

Spread over 100,000 plus square feet in Dolmen Mall Clifton, the hypermarket – a bigger version of supermarket – will have the capacity to display 30,000 products. With its state-of-the-art receiving yard and 35 exit cash counters, Jalili said, the hypermarket, much larger than existing competitors, will operate at a scale previously unheard of in Pakistan.

In 2009, the company launched its first store in Lahore where it achieved remarkable results – achieving Rs1 billion in revenues in its first year and set to cross Rs3 billion ($35 million) this year, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Jalili, a 32-year veteran of the MAF Group, did not confirm nor deny the revenue number nor did he disclose any other financial data. He, however, said that the average growth rate for packaging companies that work with Carrefour is over 30%, hinting that the growth rate of the retail business is much higher.

The company has already invested $25 million for their Lahore store and $15 million for Karachi. They have identified four more locations for Karachi and three for Lahore. The two stores employ more than 700 people, Jalili said, and every new store will add at least 350 jobs.

The Lahore store attracts an average of about 1 million visitors a month. The average number of people visiting every weekday is around 40,000 people, with weekend traffic often exceeding 80,000 people. “Karachi’s population depth can support at least five hyper markets,” Jalili said.

MAF group’s second hypermarket in Karachi is under construction at Lucky One Mall near UBL Sports Complex – the site previously housed the now defunct Fazal Mill. They have identified three more locations in Karachi but Jalili did not disclose the names saying the deal is not finalized yet. The company also wants to open at least three more stores in Lahore, he said.

“We want to launch these stores as soon as possible. It depends on how fast the developers can construct these sites,” he said. “We want our presence in every metropolitan city in Pakistan.”

At a time when many businesses, including several European and Middle Eastern ones, are looking to exit the Pakistani market, the MAF Group and Carrefour found Pakistan’s large, dense population – coupled with its rising middle class – an appealing prospect.

“We gauged Pakistan’s population strength by travelling road to road and street to street in both Karachi and Lahore when we first entered the market in 2005,” Jalili said.

Yet the size of the population alone was not what attracted the company. The relative youth of the market – with over 55% of the population under 30 years of age – means that the average Pakistani middle class household is rapidly gaining new earning members, increasing their income. Simultaneously, those making buying decisions are more willing to try new products.

“Whatever quantity a manufacturer produces and a retailer displays gets sold out, a unique attribute of the Pakistani market,” said Jalili.

MAF group owns 75% shares of Hyperstar while the France-based Carrefour Group holds the remaining 25% shares. Starting from Dubai in 1995, Hyperstar now has 50 stores in the Middle East region.

Carrefour and MAF plan on utilising the globe-spanning muscle power of the group to be able to offer lower prices to consumers. “We are talking with consumer goods companies to directly provide us with supplies at lower prices because we are such a huge buyer,” said Hyperstar executives.

The Clifton location can accommodate 3,000 cars and a higher number of motorcycles (for the entire mall). It has a selling area spread over 65,000 square feet while its warehouse is spread over 20,000 square feet giving them leverage for piling up stocks and putting a huge number of goods on display.

Hyperstar – a Dubai-based chain of hypermarkets – is starting its Karachi operations at Dolmen Mall, Clifton from today (Monday), a much anticipated development that came two years after its first Pakistaani store opened in Lahore.

A retail hypermarket is different from wholesalers such as Makro.

Hyperstar Karachi will be spread over 100,000 plus square feet and display 30,000 products, said Mubashir Jalili, who is the vice president of development at Hyperstar Pakistan.

The store’s selling area is spread over 65,000 square feet while its warehouse is spread over 20,000 square feet. The mall can accommodate 3,000 cars, Jalili said, and a higher number of motorcycles.

I've seen many malls in the US and in the UK, they look just like this. Its what you put in the malls for decoration that matters.

As i earlier said i was talking about interior design, and i said i looks average, it means it is not very elegant, its not much different from other malls of karachi...which doesnt make it unique from others...then i said "i expected more..." and you re asking to "define more" i cant help you if you me to define word "more" lingually, check this out"Defination of More (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/more)", but in the context, i wrote "i expected more", which means i was expecting better interior designs, decorations etc etc

I like the interior design. We just need to remember that this isn't an international quality mall designed or built by international companies. This is a desi designed project build to a decent local standard. The exterior design and built quality isn't that great either so I never expected a great interior.

That said, it's not too bad and we should be happy we're getting anything at all nowadays when development is at a standstill.

Finally I got back to Karachi from Lahore today and the first thing I did was pay Dolmen Mall a visit. Ok so here's the verdict. Wow! The Mall is awesome nothing like any mall in all of Pakistan. The mall is slated for a 31st December Opening thats what one of the managers there said. But hey this is Pakistan so the date can go on even further. The signs of the shops that I could see were , Yamaha Sound Studio, Butlers Chocolate Cafe, Saeed Ghani, Scentsation, Junxion, Debenhams, Cinnabon, Mihrab, Salmis Furniture these were the ones I could only see on the ground floor (Cinnabon is on the 2nd floor but the sign is visible) the escalators to go up are closed so far so couldn't explore more. Caanchi and Lugari was also there somewhere. Anyhow its awesome. The Hyperstar is really nice but its smaller than the one at Fortress in Lahore. The whole mall has the feel of the nicer malls in Saudi Arabia and Dubai. Sorta like City Center (DXB) and Riyadh Gallery (Riyadh)

These are all for now have sum more photos but cant upload them rite now.btw my verdict on the mallis taht it is awesome.the hyperstar is also gud.
the mall is opening on 9th of dec or jan dont ,there was a person outide announcing the date but i only herd 9th.for a comparision of size with hyperstar LHE this looks smaller and another thhing we can compare is that this has 35 counters and the LHE one has 39.

I think it's now the largest mall of Pakistan ( in terms of area ) or is there some other even larger??????

But soon THE CENTAURUS MALL will dwarf every other mall. The centaurus mall will have it's own 3D cinema ;-)

The Mall is massive! I went and explored all of it today they've opened up the upper floors and you can easily walk up into the areas that are also still underconstruction. Its really really big. There's a whole area with its own escalators and shit dedicated only to the Pakistan Fashion Council. Theres a whole area for Centerpoint. The foodcourt floor is another story in itself. I saw names of more big brands that are coming to Pakistan like Mango and Crab Tree & Evelyn. Oh definitely I think the Centaurus will paka paka be bigger than this, but I must say Dolmen City in itself is huge.

I am actually now waiting for The Mall to open , I want to see how big that is , I have a feeling it'll be bigger if not the same size as Dolmen City because it has a Multiplex inside it also

Dolmen City is the biggest mall so far in Paksitan. Centaurus is not bigger. And The Mall is about the size of Forum, if not smaller. I think The Mall will suck though the Cineplex will be a hit.

Whats about Dolmen City twin Towers i heard that Dolmen City Twin Towers Will Resumed in 2012 (after Completing Dolmen Mall).I think Dolmen Mall is Almost completed and the Govt report on Towers are also cleared so why they are late the Construction process? or something other, or they not want to Build Twin towers 40flX2 ?? Brand new Debenhams to open in April at Dolmen Mall

It will take another four months for UK department store Debenhams to open its doors for customers in Karachi but excitement has already surrounded the international retailer.

On Thursday, the United Kingdom’s Minister of State for Trade and Investment Lord Green of Hurstpierpoint and Cabinet Minister Baroness Sayeeda Warsi descended on the city for the store’s media launch. They didn’t mind the makeshift arrangement made for the ceremony on the top floor of the Harbour Front building, which also houses a mall.

“This is going to be huge for our market,” said Yasin Paracha, the managing director of Team A Ventures, the company bringing the franchise to Pakistan. “It seems like an expensive store but we have done our homework and there is an appetite for brands.”

At present, it is hard to say what the store will look like. The space, spread over 27,000 square feet, is still under construction. But Debenhams will market at least eight of its in-house brands in Pakistan besides other known names.

The store was originally slated to be inaugurated in 2009 but it was delayed due to a lack of space, Paracha said.

The fact that other brands such as Next and Monsoon are doing well in the country suggests that Debenhams has a market, he said. “A lot of people also shop while they travel to other countries. That is the clientele we specifically want to attract.”

The store will open up some time in April. The price strategy for the market will not be different from what customers pay in the UK or any of its 65 franchises around the world.

Betty Jackson, John Rocha and Pineapple are some of the brands that people will find in Karachi. Paracha said more stores will be opened up in other cities. Green said some of the largest British high-end brands were interested in doing business in the country. “We are working towards doubling the flow of trade between Pakistan and England.”

The popular cinnamon rolls of Cinnabon, originating from Seattle, US, are now available in Karachi at the Dolmen City mall with another franchise due to open in a few weeks at the Atrium Mall.

“I had this [Cinnabon] about six months ago in London,” Nauman said. “I’m glad they have finally opened in Karachi. Their signature classic roll is by far the best,” he added. Nauman and his sister Huma along with 500 other people were invited to the launch of the brand on Friday.

Cinnabon chose Lahore as the location for its first franchise in Pakistan in 2010. At present, it has two outlets in Punjab’s capital. “We were planning to open one in Karachi for a few months but just had to work out all the details,” the CEO for Cinnaworld, Yasser Khawaja, told The Express Tribune. “It is just a great brand, its unique taste, in my opinion, is very well suited for our taste buds.”

But there were some mothers who were cautious about feeding their children ‘too much sugar’. “It is definitely very tasty but not something I would let my son have every day without fear of him developing a sugar problem,” mused guest Mrs Iftikhar.

On the menu, Cinnabon offers three flavours of its specialised rolls, classic smothered with cream-cheese icing, chocolate and pecan. Other items include mini-cinnamon rolls, lattes, cinnamon sticks and iced beverages (slushies). A single cinnamon roll costs between Rs250 and Rs310, depending on the flavour of your choice. A box of six costs Rs1,320. A mini roll is priced between Rs175 and Rs230 while a pack of nine will cost Rs1,510.

They will not build the towers. The air force or CAA had objected to the height of the towers, so I don't think the Dolmen City owners will bother with building lower height towers.

CAA is absolutely right. PIA and PAF will crash into any building higher than 20 stories within 100 km of their airfields. The only place we're allowed to build skyscrapers is in parts of Baluchistan, or in FATA where US flight rules apply.

Of course, giving a 50% stake to Mr. 50% will allow you to build a building of any height anywhere since we have democracy.

I agree with that comment saying that we're still colonized by the British. Only recently Zardari reimposed the British India Act of 1860 on Karachi. These Pakistani women are also dressed up British Victorian clothes from the same era.

Being colonized is a state of mind and unfortunately our ruling classes are a bunch of Kaley Angraiz.

Yup, the Dolmen City owners will have to bribe the respective CAA/AF/Govt. officials to get permission to build the towers. Which they don't seem interested in doing. I am pretty sure the towers this project envisioned will never be built.

It was actually the case filed by "Environmentalists" against 42X2. And after one year they withdrew the case, since then twin towers are at same level.

Yaar, if everyone knows who the real bhatta khor is, why dont they do something about it? Karachi has a huge freakin potential. People are hardworking, the whole city has a huge diversity. Karachi also has the highest literacy rate. Its strapped with resources, brain power, man power, amazing infrastructure. Why cant the people of karachi just free themselves from political parties? Its 21st century, people need to man up and stand up for their and their childrens rights.

Actually I shouldnt be saying this but I was talking to a former brigadier, he retired in the 90s so I am not sure if I should take his perspective seriously about current situation or not but he said Karachi has been hijacked by around 10,000 armed men and if the army wants, they can get rid of this in a week. He said, army will never want to destabilize karachi as there is a naval port and an army base in karachi. I asked him why cant they just do something about these 10,000 armed men. He said, they have the support from outside and if the army jumps in, the outside support will destabilize the whole city. Basically we are screwed unless people wake up.

My uncle was showing me pictures of a car show from karachi in the 60s. I was shocked to see how open the society was, and how rich people used to back than. I did not see a single youngster with his cheap honda civic with a hood and a muffler like they have now. I saw real mature men that looked like they just got back from their office job and it looked like it was their one and only hobby. Btw It didn't look like karachi but it was. Everything in those pictures looked perfect. Peace, prosperity, love for a hobby, love for others. Some people want to divide my karachi so they can all get their share.

I have following solutions for Karachi Problem,

Karachi Should be Arm-Free.

Stupid Interior Minister A. Rehman Malik Should be Replaced.

Karachi's Security should be controlled by Pak-Army

No Politics should be allowed in Educational Departments (Colleges,Universities, etc.)

People need to man up and expose the bad guys. People are scared for their lives but they have forgotten that they have children and they have to deal with the same crap once they grow up so do or die today so your children can live in peace. Pakistani awam has never sacrificed and will never sacrifice for any good cause.

Suggestions & ideas to resolve multitude of problems & issues has never been in short supply in Pakistan but sincere efforts to implement them had always been sorely missing.

The above link shows the food outlets opening up at the Dolmen City Mall Food Court later this month.

They're all full fledge restaurant outlets rather than a food court style seen in other malls.

Most of the restaurants are fine dining outlets rather than the fast food style eateries.

5 New British Chains to Open at Dolmen City Clifton

Crabtree and Evelyn, Next, Body Shop, Toni and Guy and Debenhams are the five new british chains opening their outlets at Dolmen City, Clifton.

“Pakistan has the potential to be the primary target for all British brands. We were delighted to work with Cosmo Group in helping Crabtree and Evelyn’s achieve this milestone” said Adam Thomson, British High Commissioner to Pakistan.

Recently, British parliamentarians have flocked to Dolmen City Clifton to inaugurate Debenhams outlet in Karachi at a ceremony held at the top floor of Harborfront building which also houses Dolmen City Mall.

Encouraging more British companies, including those like Crabtree and Evelyn in the retail sector, British High Commissioner emphasized more British companies to set up their businesses in Pakistan for higher returns on their investment.

That Bombay Chowpatty is also a desi restaurant with a south Indian menu - dosas, chaats, etc.

There are a couple of restaurants with that name in Toronto but I think they're separate. There's one in Dubai that uses the same logo.

Good video. Filming at any kind of location with security in Pakistan is kind of a risky thing, since a guard or policeman could walk up to you anytime and demand to know why you're filming. I certainly wouldn't walk around filming a superstore. Anyway, I went to Dolmen City mall for the first time a couple of days ago, it is the best built mall in Pakistan so far. Can't wait to see it fully operational.
