Holy crap, putting the skyscrapers aside (6/10), that is an incredible place with the mix of the natural enviornment and the city. Ecspecially the second picture there, the cliffs with buildings. WOW!! That is definitley on my places to visit list! :eek:

Great! what a difference! this is something different than the common brazilian city, it has everything even colonial architecture, density but is not overcrowded, it has midrises and some buildings that breaks with the typical flat skyline, has landscape and green areas that breaks with the monotony of an infinite city.

just it needs a tall observation tower at the center and voila!

unfortunately, the idea that old-buildings must be preserved, started in Brazil just some years ago... Before, we used to destroy everything.

Salvador only has this huge historical center because this place was a SLUM until the 90's. The same thing happens in São Luís: it has an enourmous historical center, because it was a completely decadent city, in the poorest state of Brazil. If São Luís gets richer, it's gonna be that interesting too.

Ouro Preto, the small little town of Minas Gerais, that I posted in the Latin Forum, is also preserved because it was abandoned until the 70's, after the capital was changed to Belo Horizonte, in 1897. If it was still the capital, everything would have been destroyed.

We have some cities, like Rio de Janeiro, with maaany historic buildings, even complete streets without any modern one. But they don't make a whole district, modern buildings are everywhere, between them... Well, in Rio it's very interesting, but it's awesome to have REAL and completely historical districts.

Salvador is almost as good as Recife....and thats why I gave it a 8.5, very dense, some height (for Brazil of course) a great old part of the city, which is today very well conserved...
BTW Bahia state is doing great on restoring the old buildings

I have heard so many good things about Salvador (party-town and the like) and met so many nice people from there that I am overjoyed to finally see some pics of this place, and try to pick out the best places to visit when I get there.

Anyway, back to the skyline, definitely has density, some very nice buildings (besides the old ones, that goes without saying) and talls are reasonably concentrated. Needs some more height to add to a better definition of the core.

The city has african and european roots, Pelourinho is singular, the Lower and High City also. Salvador has an important heritage, and was the first capital by more than 200 years. Leaving the historic areas you may go to very modern areas, with imponent buildings, big avenues, malls, a metro sytem u/c, viaducts, bridges, ... Or go to districts where you may see the biggest african comunity outside Africa. Salvador is the capital of the biggest street party, its Carnival receives more than 1 million people in its streets. The city has 365 churches, one for each day of the year and has afro-brazilian temples also. It's the capital of joy with "party every day", it's capital of All Saints, it's capital of diversity and it's capital of the richest north northeastern brazilian state. Salvador is a city unique, in its people, and its food, Salvador doesn't have any similar.
