Hehehehe yeah. Its supposed to be really good. Its said that when it was built, the "Rulers of India, bought South Kensington with them". This VT plays host to over 2.5 million people a day . There are other big stations in Madras too. They are gigantic.

This is Kuala Lumpur’s old railway station (right) and railway office in a 1950/60s picture. Built along the lines of railway station architecture of India during the British rule, it’s still one of the most imposing buildings in KL.

I dont think that the new Lehrter traintsation will be bigger than Frankfurt or Leipzig.
It will surely be one of Europes biggest.
But from what I heard it will only be Europes biggest crossing trainstation,(Kreuzungsbahnhof).
Most of the traffic will be held underground

the old original roof has been restored, and general renovation works have been carried out, for a sum no less than 200 to 300 million euros!
in contrast: this is the roof before renovation:

Justme October 1st, 2005, 12:15 AM I have no photo's, but I can say that the new roof in Frankfurt's Hauptbahnhof really makes a great difference. They done some other small improvements on the rest of the station, but unfortunately just the roof has been fully renovated. Real pity, I was hoping they would do something grand like in Leipzig - that is one amazing station.

addisonwesley October 8th, 2005, 10:11 AM Canada: Toronto's Union Station.
Construction began in 1914
Opened in 1927
Facts and Figures:
Union Station functions as Toronto's transportation hub for passenger rail, GO commuter trains, and subway and GO bus service. The station is used by GO Transit, VIA Rail, Amtrack, and Ontario Northland Railways as well as providing a direct connection to the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC).
Every year, Union Station handles more passengers than all three terminals at Pearson International Airport, the nation's busiest airport:
41 million GO Train and bus passengers
20 million TTC subway passengers
2.34 million VIA passengers
Every business day, Union Station serves more than 130,000 GO Train passengers and 30,000 bus passengers. This number is expected to more than double over the next 20 years. If these riders were to drive motor vehicles, 48 lanes of highways would need to be added to accommodate the increase traffic volume.
Special events in the vicinity of Union Station can increase passenger volumes by approximately 2,300 GO passengers and 11,000 TTC passengers in a peak 15 minute interval.
Union Station is VIA Rail's busiest station with over 50 per cent of all VIA passengers using this station.
GO trains and buses serve a population of five million in an 8,000 square kilometre area.
The TTC's Union Station subway station is the fourth busiest station in the TTC system, used by 75,000 passengers a day or 20 million a year.
The TTC operates 52 trains through Union Station in the busiest hour of the morning rush period - an average of one train every 70 seconds. The TTC operates 700 trains through Union Station on weekdays.
In total, Union Station's main building has a total gross floor area of approximately 65,627 sq. m (706,426 sq. ft.)

As for the US, Grand Central Terminal without a doubt. Sad to say though, we tore down the original Penn in the early 60's. That station made Grand Central look like a cakewalk.

I would agree with Grand Central station for the United States. I don't think the US was ever into fancy railway stations. We probably focused more on building tracks to span our vast country.
Penn Station was the grandest railway terminal in the USA until they tore it down.
Before air travel became so popular in the States, the USA had the largest passenger railroad system in the world. Every major city had a grand railway station ( see DC, Kansas City, St Louis and other cities where the stations still stand, though more as shopping centers than train stations. ) But because the distances are so much greater in the USA than in Europe and other locations, air travel soon put an end to the passenger trains of yesteryear. The only place in the USA where train travel is still popular is the corridor between Washington and Boston, with NYC as the hub. Because of relatively short distances, train travel can still compete with the airlines in that market.
Tazmaniadevil October 16th, 2005, 11:16 PM At one time or another I have been in virtually all the train stations of Europe, and my favorite for grandeur has always been Milan.
