Yeah, Kowloon Landmark Tower is amazing, but didn't get approved. Instead they're building Union Square Phase 7.

He probably meant that he prefere US7 over Kowloon MTR Tower which was one of the proposals of the competition. US7 won the competition.

There's a lot of beauties by SOM. Shame that 7 South Dearborn is dead and they didn't recycle the Kowloon MTR tower for some other site.

I actually find 7SD's spire very graceful and elegant and 7SD would of been a better addition to Chicago's skyline than Fordham Spire. :)

The best city on earth. Why did Chicago cancell the other projects?

spyguy

I don't remember quite how both died off. The Skyneedle wasn't that real to begin with in a sense. I don't know how the financing and stuff went around, and I think the Gulf War took its toll on the project. Then Cesar Pelli made the Petronas instead.

7SD was more of a reality but that also fell through the cracks somehow.

Those aren't spires on 7SD, they're TV antennae. As such, they were designed to the most efficient height and their length had nothing to do with beauty.

Why did Chicago cancel the other projects?

The City of Chicago didn't cancel anything. The developers lost their financing so there wasn't any money to build those towers.

SOM along with Calatrava designed Toronto's Canada Trust Tower and the BCE Atrium.

And SOM also designed the Minto Midtown Towers which the shorter tower is now U/C.

I used to work in BCE Place in Toronto and knew that it was Calatrava but had no idea that the towers were SOM, it is truly my favourite place in Toronto and it isn't as well known as it should be. I would recommend to anyone to come to the atrium. It is wonderful there, it always makes you feel like you're outside but not at the same time, a safe feeling, very open. Especially in winter. This was a genius idea instead of just leaving an alley between the towers, as well they are defintley the most distinctive skyscrapers in the city, not the tallest but the ones that stand out the most.

Tallest operating hotel? a full hotel building would be the burj al arab, but if you're interested in staying in the highest hotel room that would be in Jin Mao

The current tallest full-hotel building in the world is Burj Al Arab in Dubai measuring in at 1,053 ft. *Excluding Ryugyong in NoKo

Ritz-Carlton Plans to Build World's Tallest Hotel
Monday, December 27, 2004; Page E02

The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Co., the Chevy Chase-based operator of a chain of luxury hotels, said it plans to build a 300-room hotel in Hong Kong in 2009 that would be the tallest hotel in the world.

The company also said it agreed to build a second hotel in the heart of Shanghai's business district.

Ritz-Carlton plans to build a 300-room, 1,574-foot-tall hotel in Hong Kong. The company is also building a hotel in Shanghai. (Ritz-carlton Hotel Co)

Both hotels are to be owned by Sun Hung Kai Properties of Hong Kong and China, one of the largest real estate companies in the world.

The 1,574-foot-tall Ritz-Carlton would soar above the Hong Kong skyline and harbor from above Kowloon Station on the Hong Kong Airport Railway line.

The company has operated another hotel since 1993 in Hong Kong.

The new hotel is to occupy the upper 13 floors of a 100-story tower designed by the architectural firm of Kohn Pederson Fox Associates.

The site would include a major mixed-use development, including condominiums, office space, retail and serviced apartments.

"Asia continues to provide the best strategic growth opportunity for the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company," said Simon F. Cooper, president and chief operating officer.

The Ritz-Carlton operates 58 hotels in the North America, South America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

Yes it does, but in my opinion, it accounts for only a fraction of it's extensive portfolio.

This firm is all about the concept, planning, and engineering, of skyscrapers. And it's list of engineers and architects, from the past to presant, are allready written into the skyscraper's history.

I don't know the year, but SOM designed a 36 story hotel for San Francisco that was never built, it set back from the street for about the first 10 or so floors, and then (as though soaring) this 25 story wall of glass, cantalevers out over itself, the utility core remaining vertical through the angel's. A spactacular concept,

And then the never built, Sears, Franklin Center. A 67 story, 1.4 million sq.ft., 800+ footer, across the street from the Sears Tower. would have given the Sears tower some good company

Probably because the developers/owners/city council prefered the current version of US7. I actually agree with them, the current version US7 fits better with the surrounding buildings of Union Square, but it would be awesome if they built that tower somewhere else!

I wouldn't say the best, but my favourite SOM building would be Jin mao Tower. It fuses the ancient Chinese temple design into a skyscraper and you can't truly appreciate it unless you've seen the facade up close. :)
