Nice pics zee...
There are quite a few more universities in Pakistan that have great modern campuses. Some of them that come to my mind include:
- Agha Khan University, Karachi
- COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Lahore
- Hamdard University, Karachi
- International Islamic University, Islamabad
- National University of Computers & Emerging Sciences (NUCES/FAST), Lahore/Karachi/Islamabad/Peshawar
- Lahore School of Economics, Lahore

If somebody finds more pics then please do put them up here. Has anyone seen Beaconhouse National University's new campus on Raiwind Road? I've only heard its name, but I think it too has a good campus.

AKES plans to construct an 'education city' spread over 500 acres, off Super Highway, to initially set up a software park and a university for research, teaching, training and development of human resources in various fields of science and technology.

2) ..........The Sindh governor has allotted 600 acres land to the AKES at Super Highway, some 20 km from Karachi, for the project which will be started with an initial allocation of $200 million. The money has already been provided by the Aga Khan Foundation. With the passage of time, more money would be provided to complete the project in time.

Pakistan should start to focus on developing Universities in Rural Areas. This will increase the literacy rates of those Rural Areas and increase the investment in Rural Areas. The cities can become University Cities, and people can send their children to these fine universities, out of the cities, to focus on their studies.

Other investments would be made, and Commercial expansion will naturally come to those rural cities, increasing the economy of those cities. The campuses can be 200 Acres with focus on Social Sciences, Humanities, Political Science, English, Information Technology, Economics, Finance, Business Administration, ETC.

Instead of your children staying in the same cities, they can go out to a University-City, focusing on their studies and on campus activities. A company may decide to invest in the city because of the university's quality. Plus your children will meet the local villagers, bring in new ideas, new theories, and stop the backwardness of some of our poor areas.

Let's just say this: If the Pakistan Federal Government decides to build a Major University in a Rural Area, they are doing a greater good for Pakistan, rather than building one in the cities, which I do not oppose, but one brings in better benefits for the greater good of Pakistan.

The Philosophy is this: Pakistan opens a Major Quality University in a Rural Area. Students from Peshawar, Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad, etc, come in to the City, bringing in different ideas to this, once rural small town. This small rural town was once runned by a Nazim, who was also a Feared Corrupt Feudal Lord. The New Students, United Against Corruption, supported a new Candidate, A Farmer who has passion for Education, and Advancement, yet feared his Feudal Master. Who thought that it was impossible to replace a Nazim, and also the MNA, who was also known to be corrupt but his alliance with the Ruling Coalition kept him in power. These students will be making a difference in the lifes of many people in the rural city.

This New University City, would not be a completely new city, but a village town that was made in to a new University City. This city, becoming one of the cleanest areas of Politics, make it the ideal climate for investment. Plus, Domestic Businesses will want to expand to this area. The University would have about 25,000 Students, in addition to another 20,000 Local population. It would attract Banks to invest in the city to create branches, gas stations to fill the cars of students, restaurants, and the paper and book industry would be attracted because of the paper and book business. Then computer shops and cyber cafes would be build for students to buy softwares, computers, check emails, etc.

This Model University City would be an excellent investment.

Before shooting down this idea, one should not critize ideas. We need to stop critizing each other's ideas and start encouraging them, and the entrepeneural spirit and change our nation to become a first world nation, so twenty years down the road when we do become a first world nation, we can be the First World Power from the Islamic World, and a Respected Democratic Nation, we can build the foundations and become a nation where developing countries would come to for Financial Aid, and investments overseas.

Sincerely,

Punjab University is already in a major city, Lahore.

I am talking about building a major university of quality in a village/town, not to close to Lahore or Karachi, however something off a motorway or the coastal highway, or build it in NWFP or Balochistan. Perhaps put it near Gwadar, in an already established town.

Offcourse the university in Lahore will not have investments, because there are already businesses established in Lahore. However, a small area will bring in investment to that area, plus, politics are more easily controlled in the smaller areas then they are in the big areas.

Sincerely,

Munzir Naqvi

P.S. Thank you Mr. Asfar, I am very honored, however I think you should be in the Education Ministry, being the Education Minister. We need good people in the Ministry who are visionaries, and don't let criticism be an obstacle for them.

Anyhow, those discussing education policy and other stuff may start their own threads... leave mine alone! ;)

i think that if the colege is doing good in Kala Shah Kaku, then it should not change its location. plus if the lake city project is reight next to Kala Shah Kaku, it would bring more students and future developments in the future.

i dnt think so because lake city will have its own world class university but yeh it might make the area develop more but will take probly 15-20 years.

The project im talking about, UET Kalashah Kaku is more close to motorway. The Lake City 35k project is on the opposite corner. Wasnt it next to ravi btw? Anyways this new campus of UET, i got the info from the Dean of Architecture & Planning Department n Senior Survey teacher who are involved in this project. Let juss wait till they finally start the design work. Right now they are surveying the land. N lets keep the topic back to the pics!!!

Navy to establish War College at Jaati Umra

Staff Report

LAHORE: Pakistan Navy (PN) would establish a War College in Jaati Umra in the near future, said the vice chief of Naval Staff and Vice Admiral Mohammad Haroon at the 3rd Correspondence Course conducted by senior officers at Pakistan Navy War College on Saturday.

The vice chief said that the proposal for a new PN War College was discussed at a meeting between him and Punjab Governor Lt General (r) Khalid Maqbool at the Governor House. The governor assured the vice chief that he would support to acquire land at Jati Umra.

just their endowment alone, which is kind of like their investment which is used to generate revenue to run the uni is something $35 billion

Thanks.

What I find stupid and have always found to be stupid, is that Islamabad has 17 unis, where as AJK only has 3, Northern Areas only have 1 and Balochistan only has 6. On top of that, NWFP has just a tad bit more unis (21) than ISB. Other than that, Sindh has 38 unis. Thats 2 more than Punjab. When Punjab's population is easily more double that of Sindh. I bet most of Sindh's unis are just in Karachi.

Swat the ancient Udyana, the land of foresty, fruits and flowers, has the honour of having had links with the old world through the visits to and conquest of this fascinating valley by the Greeks, Scythians, Parthians, Khushans, Sassanians and Maurians in different periods of history.

It was perhaps this affinity with the ancient work of learning that "Mr.Miangul Abdul Haq Jahanzeb", the former ruler of Swat valley. State thought of establishing a seat of learning at Saidu Sharif. This love for education blossomed in the stately form of "Jahanzeb College" in 1952. which mainfest fully his love and respect for the cause of Education. He also tried to provide all possible facilities to the people of Swat in the fields of health and communication during his reign from 12th of December, 1949 to July, 1969.

Holy shit! that looks more luxurious than the fucking white house! Of course we can be 100% sure that the Chief Minister will build a new mansion which costs 10 times more and takes up much more space than this one. Donating it to a womens university is just a clever way to cover up his ambitions to live in an even grander residence.

These are actually 125 universities+Degree Awarding Institutes. A university, according to a global criterion, must have atleast 4 different departments(disciplines of studies) and must have sufficient research facilities. A Degree Awarding Institute may have only one discipline with less or no research at all, however, and we all know we have a few UNIVERSITIES in Pakistan keeping in mind that criterion.

The Umaer Basha Foundation and University of Karachi decided to upgrade the existing Department of Computer Science to a full-fledged Institute of Information Technology named after an outstanding Pakistani student, Mr. Umaer Basha of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, USA) who passed away in an accident. The Umaer Basha Foundation, USA has also very kindly offered its financial support and help in developing a formal academic linkage with the MIT's digital nation program. This linkage was only possible due to the affiliation of the late Umaer Basha with MIT.

MIT like building for Karachi University IT Dept inaugurated
via www.dawn.com

A new building constructed with the financial support of a US-based NGO for an information technology institute was inaugurated at the University of Karachi on Thursday.

The Computer Science department of Karachi University, established in 1985, presently housed in the Aiwan-i-Iqbal hostel building, will now be shifted to the new building and upgraded as the Umaer Basha Institute of Information Technology at the beginning of the first semester of the varsity's 2005 session.

The building of the institute, made like that of the IT department of the Massachusists Institute of Technology (MIT), Boston, USA, has a total construction area of 68,000sq-ft comprising three floors and built at a cost of Rs56 million mainly donated by the Umaer Basha Foundation, USA, and the KU, Project Director Dr S M Aqil Burney said…

Family and friends remember Basha's enthusiasm, affection

Robert J. Sales, News Office
October 22, 1997

Umaer Basha, in many ways, was the son every parent dreams of having. Serious but fun-loving, outgoing but soft-spoken, friendly, loving, intelligent, curious and compassionate, he quickly became a special person to his housemates in the East Campus dormitory.

The life story of Mr. Basha, a freshman who died in Chicago Children's Hospital on September 24 after fainting and accidentally drowning in a shower enclosure during his first visit home, is a tale of youthful exuberance, intellectual curiosity, a thirst for knowledge and a healthy respect for education.

These traits endeared him to his friends and the faculty at Lake Forest High School in Illinois. Whether it was learning to play the violin, studying chemistry or physics, tutoring classmates or observing the Hale-Bopp comet, Umaer's enthusiasm about learning was contagious. Likening Mr. Basha to his beloved Hale-Bopp, a friend observed, "He will forever be the comet that passed through our lives briefly yet touched us deeply."

Another friend, Justin Peters, wrote in the Lake Forest High School newspaper The Forest Scout of October 3: "He accomplished more in 18 years than some accomplish in a lifetime. Every action of his life showed this: his grades, his extracurriculars, his strength of character. He lived every day as if it were his last."

But outside his hometown, the tragedy of Mr. Basha's accidental death was compounded when it became a footnote to the "big story" of binge and underage drinking on college campuses. He and his family deserve better.

For Umaer, matriculation at MIT represented both a homecoming and a dream come true. His mother Fatima, a postdoctoral fellow from Pakistan, worked until midnight in an MIT chemistry laboratory on the night before he was born on April 20, 1979. Two weeks later, she was carrying the infant back and forth across the Harvard Bridge while she continued her experiments. His father, Anwer, was also a postdoctoral fellow at MIT when Umaer was born.

The family bond and the relationship with MIT provide a subtext to the love, admiration and mutual respect that permeates the e-mail correspondence between a mother and son away from home. All the letters begin with the traditional Moslem salutation: "Assalaamalaykum" (May God's blessing be with you).

On August 28, shortly after he arrived on campus, Umaer reported that an eye exam went well and the doctor did not recommend that he get new glasses. "I think I will anyway," he said, "especially because the lecture halls are quite large here."

Anticipating a visit from his mother and 9-year-old sister, Amina, he wrote, "I am 100 percent healthy, happy and looking forward to your arrival (mom and sis) and thinking about what to get for dad from here. It will be an incredibly exciting weekend, like seeing the start of a soccer game or something; when you first mix together the chemicals in one of your laboratory reactions and then wait for the results to come back."

The next day, his mother replied:

"This is a time of great joy and celebration from our end and pray that inshallah [God willing], for you this will indeed be a lifetime-memorable living experience in all facets of your life. This was our dream, which your father and I shared together and by grace of God you with your unmatched gift for excellence made into reality. Now that you are surrounded by intelligent people, the best of all in their field at this great place of learning--we feel that our job is well done by God's help."

In a September 1 letter, Umaer wrote that he thought of his mother whenever he looked out across Killian Court. "MIT says 360 credits are a circle," he said. "And I have come full circle around--from here where I was born back to here. And it might seem to me at times that life is full of circles. But it is not--it presses forward in helices, like in DNA.

"Now that my room is set and organized, I miss you even more and wish you were here. It is strange how we want these moments to never end. But in fact, I wish I was home as well. I know that you feel very close to me as I do to you, so it is silly for me to miss [you].

"Always picture me studying and learning, as soon as tonight, and I see your love at the fundamental subatomic level--far greater a level than any more earthly love might encompass."

In the same letter, Mr. Basha wrote, "As Dad said in his prayers before I left home, God has helped me through every single step to where I am now. I feel as though you've both lifted me to such incredible heights from which I must now further myself."

Writing to his father on September 17, Mr. Basha noted that despite a bout with the flu and occasional homesick feelings, he was adjusting to life at MIT--"I'm beginning to feel at home here, too." Nonetheless, he was looking forward to a weekend visit to Lake Forest--"there's no place like home." He concluded this letter by thanking his mother for awakening him before dawn so he could witness the sunrise. "I really just wanted to rise with the sun (her sun/son) so that it might be sent over 1,000 miles west a little brighter."

During that visit, he fainted in the shower at home and lapsed into a coma after his lungs filled with water. Doctors said the cause of death was accidental drowning. Ironically, in an essay entitled "H2O" that accompanied his application to MIT, Umaer described how he overcame his fear of water when he learned to swim during his sophomore year in high school.

"Being the son of two chemists," he wrote, "I learned the molecular formula of water at a very young age. Yet none of their example of benign contact with the life-substance could convince me, five years old, to take up swimming. Neither of them knew how to swim, so they let it go, and for years I avoided the sport." By learning how to swim in his teens, he said, "My understanding of water has matured. It's more than a drink, more than a shower--it's a livable medium."

According to the Prophet of Islam, a person who drowns attains a state of martyrdom. The Koran says, "Martyrs are not dead. They are alive, but you are not aware of them."

In a letter of recommendation to MIT written last December, Lake Forest High School English teacher Diane Clark called Mr. Basha "one of the most gifted thinkers I have encountered in my 17 years as an English teacher." She continued, "He is a good friend to all who know him, he has a delightfully dry sense of humor and his list of extracurricular activities speaks of a diversified, well-rounded person. Umaer is ready for the challenges and rewards that await him and will be a respected leader, a distinguished learner and a trusted friend--in short, an excellent addition to any institution."

The high school will hold a memorial service on November 28 and plans to award a scholarship in Umaer's name. His parents, family and friends plan to establish a foundation to memorialize his life. Donations may be made to the Umaer Basha Fellowship Fund, c/o Dr. Wahid Qureshi, 3322 15th St., Kenosha, WI 53142.

Just so people don't take it seriously, that ranking means nothing in terms of quality but rather quantity.
