With over 6.5 million units of production in 2002, Vestel Electronics is the largest television manufacturer in Europe, accounting for 57% of total CTV production in Turkey. Exporting 96% of its production to 103 countries, leading with EU members, Vestel has been the leader in exports of TV sets since 1996.
The Vestel Group has been the leader in Turkey's consumer electronics sector since the foundation of Vestel Electronics in 1984. In the following years, the Group expanded its operations into television components, personal computers, PC monitors and white goods.
After nearly a decade of rapid growth, the Vestel Group suffered a brief period of decline under its previous owner in the early 1990s. This situation has rapidly reversed after acquisition by the Zorlu Group in 1994. The Zorlu Group has invested in new capital resources, experienced and entrepreneurial management team, and brought into Vestel and a new focus on quality and customer satisfaction.
Between 1995 and 1997, the Zorlu Group invested more than US$ 40 million in expanding and modernising the Vestel Group's capacity and business organisation. During the same period, the Vestel Group raised it consolidated net sales and exports by 148% and 190% respectively in US$ terms, and its after tax earnings by more than 500%. The Vestel Group's rapid recovery reflects its majority shareholders' commitment to unconditional customer satisfaction through new and improved products, a variety of product features, and competitive prices. It also reflects the far-sighted manufacturing strategies of its management team.
Today, the Vestel Group is comprised of seventeen companies operating in manufacturing, technology development, marketing, and distribution fields in the consumer electronics, digital technologies, and white goods. The Group's products include; flat TVs, plasma TVs, TFT-LCD TVs, conventional TVs, TV-DVD Combos, IDTVs, digital and analogue receivers, PC monitors, personal computers, no-frost and static refrigerators, air conditioners, and washing machines. Vestel will also start manufacturing cooking appliances in 2005. The product groups are differentiated in order to provide customers a wide selection range.
Vestel's strategy is quality, innovation, and fast delivery. To support this, the Group has been continually investing in new technologies, increasing its capacity and expanding its production flexibility. At the same time, it has been pursuing vertical and horizontal integration to enhance control over final quality of its products and to optimise scales of production. This strategy has enabled Vestel to secure its position as a first class OEM Company, meeting a wide range of specialised needs and ensuring consistent high quality products.
Vestel's research and design teams are the first in Turkey to develop proprietary product designs and Vestel is the only developer of micro-controller software for use in its production processes. In order to follow up the new technologies, the Group established Vestel USA in 1998, and acquired Cabot Communications in the UK, which develops and offers broadcast TV technology solutions.
Subsidiary companies of the Group located in various countries in Europe play an important role in penetrating the European market and expanding Vestel's export markets.
Vestel is the export leader of Turkey with revenues of over US$ 1.5 billion. This revenue stream combined with the Group's rapid growth in international markets has established Vestel as one of the worldwide consumer electronics leaders. Vestel sells its products in 110 countries including Europe, The CIS, Asia, and The Middle East, Africa, America, and Australia.

History
In 1950's when Turkey had just started to industrialize, Vehbi Koç, the founder of Koç Holding, was in the search of a product to help Turkey gain foreign currency. Then for an investment in a tomato paste and canned food factory, he established a partnership with Bejerano who was experienced in this field. The name of the company founded in 1954 was registered as Beko which was a combination of the first two letters of Koç and Bejerano. Yet, the situation in the country at the time did not allow it to start operations.
Then an opportunity emerged in these years to establish a dealership for the sales of General Electric bulbs, and the name of the canned food company was changed to Beko Ticaret A.Ş. Vehbi Koç, who was the first person ever to establish a dealership system in Anatolia, also managed thus to deliver Arçelik products right to the doors of consumers.
After having transferred its Arçelik dealership rights to Atılım in 1977, Beko Ticaret began, as of 1983, to operate in the field of white goods industry under the brand name of Beko on such vast experience built up in time.
As of 1990's, when Koç Holding Durable Consumer Goods Group opted for overseas activities, Beko was chosen as the export brand.
When we reached the year 2000, Beko was taken out of Beko Ticaret A.Ş.'s organization, and joined the Arçelik brand under the organization of Arçelik A.Ş. due to the restructuring of Koç Holding Durable Consumer Goods Group.
Beko, the first brand in Turkey ever to export its products under its own brand, began this journey with the objective to become a "World Brand". Having achieved a great deal in the domestic market first, Beko has now managed to introduce its brand to millions of consumers in more than a 100 countries worldwide.
http://www.arcelikas.com.tr/images/arcelik_logo.gif
Arçelik was founded in 1955 and entered the Turkish household appliances sector by producing its first washing machine in 1959 and its first refrigerator in 1960. In 1968, Arçelik moved to its Çayırova facilities. In the 1970s and 80s, the company expanded its product range and opened its Eskişehir Refrigerator Plant in 1975, İzmir Vacuum Cleaner Plant in 1979 and Ankara Dishwasher Plant in 1993.
1999 was a year of growth and reorganization. Arçelik founded Ardem to manufacture cooking appliances in June and brought under its roof Türk Elektrik Endüstrisi A.Ş. and Atılım ve Gelişim Pazarlama A.Ş. as a single legal entity. In January 2001, Arçelik A.Ş. took over the marketing and sales activities of Beko products that used to be marketed and sold by Beko Ticaret. The new organization model enabled the company to manage production and sales/marketing activities centrally and to increase productivity.
The Orbital washing machine created by the R&D Center attracted attention worldwide and won the first Technology Grand Award in 1998; it won the 2. Technology Grand Award in 1999 with its MQM (Motor Fault Detection) project.
The vision of Arçelik A.Ş. is to possess one of the ten most preferred global brands in our sector by the year 2010.
What is important for our Company is not simply to expand, and make profits, but to generate strategies which will allow us to maintain our competitive edge through continuous development, and secure our future greatness. In addition to our Arçelik, Beko, and Altus brands, brand names like Elektra Bregenz, Blomberg, Arctic, Leisure, Flavel, and Troila, which we have incorporated in accordance with our international expansion strategies, form a product spectrum that will satisfy all customer segments in international markets.
Arçelik A.Ş., with its innovative approach, is creating its own technology, and from a technological perspective, an impressive number of ideas developed in its R & D department are listed amongst the firsts in the world. With about 300 successful patent applications, Arçelik accounts for 10% of all the patent applications in Turkey, since 1996. Moreover, in the European durable consumer goods sector Arçelik is one of the first four companies with the highest number of patents to its name.
Arçelik, which in conformity to European standards, earmarks approximately 1.5% of its total annual turnover to R & D, employs 450 researchers in its central and operational R & D departments. Working towards the goal of acquiring technological leadership in its sector, our Company has won some very prestigious awards in the international arena in 2004, through the products it has developed.
For Arçelik A.Ş., with more than 75 million products in use in more than 100 countries of the world, customer satisfaction has always been one of the highest priorities. Therefore, we try to be in close contact with our customers, and continue our work with a view to providing the consumers with products and services that will satisfy their needs.
We are in the process of seeking new areas of co-operation, and building new strategic partnerships. In order to enhance product diversification, and to respond to diverse consumer requirements under the same roof, as of 2004, we have already started selling Motorola, Siemens, LG, Philips, and Sony-Ericsson cellular phones, and Sony electronic equipment. Our cellular phone spectrum has been enriched by Arçelik and Beko brand cell phones. Following in the footsteps of this development, we have included household furniture into our product spectrum. As of the end of 2004, we have opened more than 30 Arstil furniture outlets, in 20 provinces of Turkey. We are also planning to expand the product leasing method which we initiated within the last year, and which is specifically developed to meet seasonal requirements, in all the major cities. Again, in response to consumer requirements, we have produced the first washing machines in Turkey with payload capacities of 7kg, and 10 kg; thus perfecting a product spectrum ranging from a payload capacity of 3.5 kg, up to 10 kg, and responding to diverse consumer needs.
One of the most important factors that have made Arçelik A.Ş. an international corporation is loyalty to and for its principles. We have therefore identified veracity, transparency, and accountability as our Corporate Management Policy. Arçelik, not only provides high quality products and services, but also fulfills its public responsibility successfully.

Hacıbekir lokumları is maybe the first international brand of Turkey. Everyone flying back from Istanbul is taking a box with them...Joya
Master Bekir Affandi came to Istanbul from Kastamonu in Anatolia, and opened his small shop at Bahcekapi in 1777 where he hand - made hard and soft candies.
"Arabesque" is a book published in London. In the chapter titled "Old Stamboul" it gives information about confectioner Bekir Affandi, his small shop and how he made and sold candies. It says "Anyone who has any pretensions to a knowledge of the Middle East should know Haci Bekir". Bekir Affandi became Haci Bekir after he went to Mecca on pilgramage.
Soon after Haci Bekir began making candies fame of his products reached the Sultan, and he appointed him "Chief Confectioner" to the Ottoman Court. He was a master who kept up with new developments. When beet sugar and starch became available he was the first one to use them instead of grape molasses for sweetener and flour, respectively.
Hard candy (akide) and Turkish Delight (Lokum) had long been known in Istanbul, but cleanliness of his shop and his recipes made his products outstanding and much sought after.
A painting of Haci Bekir was made by Maltese artist Amedeo Preziosi who came to Istanbul in mid-nineteenth century,
and is famous for his paintings of Istanbul. The original of the painting hangs in the Louvre Museum in Paris. A lithographic copy of it is at Topkapi Museum in Istanbul.

After Haci Bekir passed away his son, Muhiddin, took over the shop and the title Chief Confectioner to the Palace. During his time the company was awarded a silver medal in Vienna (1873), another silver medal in Cologne (1888) and gold medals in Brussels (1897) and Paris (1906) fairs for excellent product quality.
Under management of Ali, Muhiddin's son, the company prospered. In addition to several shops in Istanbul one was opened in Cairo and another in Alexandria, Egypt. In 1911 he was appointed confectioner to royal palace by his highness the Khedive of Egypt. Company's products were successfully exhibited and sold in New York Fair in 1939. Ali died in 1974.
The company named after three generations; Ali Muhiddin Haci Bekir, is now run by the fourth and fifth generations together. Its production facilities and stores are all in Istanbul now. It has a thriving export business around the World.

Founded in Turkey in 1991, Mavi, which means blue in Turkish, is known for high quality, great fitting and fashion-forward denim. Mavis never-ending goal is to create the perfect pair of jeans with an unmatched fit. In the early years, success grew out of a fresh approach to an established concept. As the low-rise craze took hold, Mavi established itself as a new talent in the denim world with styles like the Molly and Mindy. These fits are still popular today. Like the people that wear them, each pair of Mavi jeans has a distinct personality. Over the years Mavi has grown from just selling great fitting jeans to offering an entire lifestyle collection.
Mavi was established and remains as a family company. Mavis patriarch, Sait Akarlilar, drew from his experiences as a boy in the garment industry to found Erak, which today stands as one of the largest apparel manufacturing companies in Turkey. In 1990 Sait Akarlilar wanted to create an entirely new denim brand, one with Mediterranean roots. He looked to his family, specifically son Ersin and daughter Elif, to provide the leadership and creative inspiration for the Mavi brand. Presently, Ersin serves as the companys CEO, overseeing global operations. Elif oversees marketing, product development and supervises the creative direction of the Mavi brand.
The mission is to make fashionable clothes that represent a free-spirited and adventurous lifestyle. Creative inspirations for the collections represent different travels and explorations through life. A major element of the Mavi brand is supporting and fostering art and artists through programs and special events. With these special programs Mavi seeks to compliment its customers lives, and to add a layer of creativity and self expression. Building on that theme, in 1997 Mavi founded its own magazine aptly named: Maviology. The concept behind the widely distributed free quarterly Zine, was to establish a creative outlet and voice for the brand. Maviology has featured everything from music festivals to ground-breaking photography to personal essays and reflections. Maviology represents a near limitless outlet for interesting, noteworthy and expressive content.
Mavi sells millions of pairs of jeans every year. It is sold in over 4,600 specialty stores and better department stores in twenty eight different countries including the US, Australia, Canada, Turkey, Germany, Italy, England and Denmark. Mavi owns and operates stores in many cities around the world, namely New York, Vancouver, Montreal, Berlin, Frankfurt and Istanbul. Significant retail space in these stores is dedicated to supporting and exhibiting the works of up-and-coming artists. There are also ten Mavi showrooms located all over the world in Istanbul, New York, Milan, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Montreal, London, Frankfurt, Copenhagen, and Sydney making it one of the few Turkish products that is a true global brand.

sparty2 September 26th, 2005, 08:01 PM THE LEADER OF TURKISH AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY
One of the greatest dreams that Vehbi Koç had in his life was to grant and automotive factory to Turkey. Realizing this dream in the year 1968, he set up the Turkish Automotive Factory Inc. TOFAŞ in short
The foundations of the Turkish automotive industry were laid with this large project.
Today, Tofaş still retains its quality of being one of the flagship organizations not only in the Turkish Automotive Industry but also in the Turkish economy. It makes production for both the home market and many countries of the world.
Foundations of the factory, of which the headquarters is in Istanbul, were laid on 13 April 1969 and it started the first serial production on 12 February 1971. The area of the factory was 735.170 square meters with 61.848 square meters being enclosed space. Now, following a continuous increase because of the investments done in line with the new needs, it amounted to 1 million square meters of which 350.000 square meters is enclosed space.
Founded in the first place for producing 20.000 cars, Tofaş constantly grew by taking into consideration the continuously expanding home market and the export potential. As a result, it has become a modern enterprise which has the economic scale for producing 250 thousand cars a year today.
Starting its serial production with model 124 following its foundation, Tofaş launched the production of series 131 and later on Tempra simultaneously with Fiat Auto. These models were followed relatively by Tipo and Uno. Tofaş still produces the models Palio, Albea, Marea and Doblò.
The headcount of workers, technicians and engineers, which was 1.000 at the beginning has today come close to 5.000 with the rising capacity.
The Doblo is exclusively being built by Tofas for all european countries...
And there is even more good news...:
In response to anticipated changes in the entry level segment of the European light commercial vehicle market, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Fiat and Tofas are introducing an innovative small vehicle concept to extend their current commercial vehicle lineups.
The three partners objective is to design a compact, economical, multi-purpose commercial vehicle that will be modern, sturdy and attractive.
Powered by especially fuel-efficient engines, it will enable the partners to proactively meet the expected growth in the entry-level segment with a range of particularly affordable vehicles. The new models will deliver effective environmental and mobility solutions for business use in metropolitan areas, as well as excellent highway performance.
With the active support of PSA Peugeot Citroën and Fiat, Tofas will be in charge of coordinating the development and production of the future models based on a new platform. The vehicles will be produced at Tofas plant in Bursa, Turkey. The annual production capacity will be of 135,000 units, of which two-thirds for PSA Peugeot Citroën and one-third for Fiat including Tofas.
Total investment, including research and developmet and production start-up costs, is estimated at roughly 350 million euro.

Turkcell - A Case Study in the US
"Turkcell: The only Turk on Wall Street"
California State University is using Turkcell's success story as a case study at MBA lectures. Sue Greenfeld, Director of CSUSB's M.B.A. program, who spent time in Turkey last year as a Fulbright recipient, is using Turkcell as a case study in her lectures.
The case study, "Turkcell: The only Turk on Wall Street", begins with an introductory section about the history and characteristics of the Telecommunication sector in Turkey and the country's economic structure. It then shifts focus towards Turkcell and its success story against all odds since its inception in 1993 until now. In her analysis, Sue Greenfeld evaluates the key factors such as the corporate vision and social responsibility, which guided Turkcell throughout the period from when it received its first GSM license to delivering voice and data services to more than 18 million subscribers.
The study underlines the importance of Turkcell's presence at the Board of Directors of the GSM Association, which represents approximately 80% of the world communication industry with more than 700 members from 200 countries and a total of around 850 million subscribers. Turkcell uses the GSMA Board as a platform to meet the world's leading GSM operators, cell phone manufacturers, and data/content providers and developers on a regular basis. This enables the Company to closely track global developments and act as an active player in defining global strategies.
The last section of the study points to future challenges that Turkcell, as Turkey's leading and Europe's sixth GSM operator by subscriber numbers, may face.
Sue Greenfeld states that Turkcell's success story makes an excellent case study for the MBA students of California State University, which is why the study will be published and used in lectures at universities throughout the US.

The airline was established on May 20, 1933 as the State Airlines Administration and started operations in August 1933. It was founded in Ankara as Hava Yollari Devlet Isletmesi Idaresi and began operations with an Istanbul, Eskisehir, Ankara service. The name was changed to Devlet Hava Yollari (DHY) in June 1938.
The first international flight was launched in 1947 to Athens, but it took another 40 years before the introduction of long-haul flights to the Far East and across the Atlantic. A major reorganisation resulted in the replacement of state company DHY with a mixed corporation, Turk Hava Yollari AO (THY) on 20 February 1956. The airline's shares were passed to the prime ministry public participation administration in 1990 and about 24.8% of the shares were sold to the public. Ereğli Demir Çelik Fabrikaları T.A.Ş
Erdemir increased its initial crude steel production capacity of 470,000 tons/year with Intermediate Expansion (1969-1972), to 1.7 million tons/year with Stage I Expansion (1972-1978) and Stage II Expansion (1978-1983) investments and to 2.0 million tons/year with Complementary Investments between 1983-1987.
Applying the principles of continuous improvement, Erdemir completed one of the greatest investments of our country, the Capacity Improvement and Modernization (CIM) Project which started in 1990. Together with the main production units put into operation around the middle of 1996, Erdemirs crude and flat steel production capacities have increased to 3.0 million tons/year and 3.5 million tons/year respectively. Along with ongoing investments that aim to sustain the levels of production attained through the CIM projects, while developing product quality, reducing unit costs and developing products with high value addition, a production capacity of 5.0 million tons/year is targeted with the contemporary investment program.
In accordance with our growth policies, İskenderun Demir ve Çelik A.Ş. (İsdemir) which produces long products with the method of integrated iron and steel production, was acquired from the Privatization Administration for USD 50 million on January 31, 2002. Thus, total crude steel production capacity of the Erdemir Group approached 5.0 million tons/year. İsdemir has been taken over with the condition that it is to be modernized and transformed into a modern flat steel producer.
To benefit from privatization opportunities in the iron and steel sector abroad, Laminorul De Benzi Electrotehnice (LBE- Romania) facility, producing flat silicon steel with 108,000 tons/year capacity was acquired on January 28, 2002, by our subsidiary Erdemir Romania SRL. Production at this facility meets the demands of Turkey, Romania as well as that of third countries.
(Erdemir), was established as a private enterprise on February 28, 1960 by the Law No: 7462 to meet the Turkish flat iron-steel demand which was previously imported. The facilities, construction of which began in June 1961, started production on May 15, 1965, after a 42- month construction and erection period.
Erdemir Gebze Çelik Servis Merkezi A.Ş (Steel Service Center), with 150,000 tons/year capacity was established on October 2, 2001 and put into commercial operation on January 1, 2002 to establish effective distribution channels to rapidly meet the end users orders with custom dimensions and tolerances.
Erdemir, in order to share its technological and intellectual knowledge with industrial organizations and to produce higher added value, established an engineering company named Erdemir Mühendislik ve Danışmanlık Hizmetleri A.Ş. (Erenco) on August 18, 2001. Erenco contributes to the development of the Turkish industry through all kinds of engineering, consultancy and R&D services primarily related to iron and steel industry across the country and abroad.
Pursuant to the Transfer Agreement contracted on May 31, 2002, shares of Çelik Çekme Boru Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş (Çelbor) were transferred to Erdemir by the Privatization Administration. The seamless pipes that Çelbor produces are strategically important and are used in crucial industries such as steam boilers, petrochemical facilities, the defense industry and hydraulic systems.

Eczacıbaşı starts production at its new plant in Ireland
The capacity of VitrA Ceramic Tiles new plant, which was inaugurated by the CEO of the Eczacıbaşı Group, Dr. Erdal Karamercan, is 1 million 750 thousand square meters. Situated in the city of Arklow, VitrA Ireland Ltd. is the only ceramic tile producer in Ireland.
The Eczacıbaşı Group has taken another significant step towards its goal of becoming a global manufacturer with the start-up of its new plant in Ireland.
VitrA Ceramic Tiles broke ground for its new plant in Arklow, Ireland, on 16 April 2004, at a ceremony attended by the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Turkey, Abdullah Gül, and the Irish Minister of State in charge of European Affairs at that time, Dick Roche. The new plant was inaugurated on 31 March 2005 by Dr. Erdal Karamercan, CEO of the Eczacıbaşı Group.
VitrA Ceramic Tiles was established in Arklow in 1998 and is the only ceramic tile manufacturer in Ireland. The new plant responds to the capacity increase and modernization requirements of the Companys growing market share and raises the total value of its investment in Ireland to USD 20 million and its local production capacity to 1 million 750 thousand square meters.
With the start-up of operations at its new plant, VitrA Ceramic Tiles aims to raise its turnover to USD 25 million in 2005.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Eczacıbaşı Group CEO Dr. Erdal Karamercan noted that the plant in Ireland had raised VitrA Ceramic Tiles overall capacity to 22 million square meters and said, Our investment in Ireland represents a vital step towards our goal of making VitrA a world leader.
Stressing that the experience of VitrA Ceramic Tiles in Ireland had given the Eczacıbaşı Group the assurance to undertake further international manufacturing investments, Karamercan said, Your invaluable partnership and confidence in our products have paved the way for these investments and the steady growth of our building material sales, which reached 530 million US dollars in 2004.
In his speech, Karamercan referred to the new approaches to bathroom culture being designed by VitrA, a global brand that originated in Turkey, and said, Combining traditional and modern perspectives, VitrA creates a new world of bathroom culture, a culture whose message echoes in the modern design of VitrA and which welcomes you to Another World.

Through the establishment of new facilities in Russia and Turkey, VitrA Ceramic Tiles plans to raise its capacity to 26 million square meters in 2006.
Expanding its export sales by 20 percent, VitrA Ceramic Tiles accounted for USD 70 million of the USD 300 million export sales realized by the Eczacıbaşı Building Materials Division in 2004. Apart from its showrooms in Arklow and Dublin, VitrA Tiles has showrooms in Atlanta, Moscow and Kerpen. Stanpolitan October 5th, 2005, 08:39 AM VitrA announces cooperation with star designer Ross Lovegrove
Ross Lovegrove, one of the most prominent names in industrial design, has begun working with Eczacıbaşı VitrA on the design of a bathroom. This is Lovegrove's first project in Turkey as well as his first design for the bathroom market. VitrA will unveil Lovegrove's innovative bathroom suite in March 2005 at ISH Frankfurt, the world's leading bathroom fair.
At a press conference kicking off the Eczacıbaşı Group's annual Creativity and Innovation Day on 21 December 2004, Lovegrove said that he expected his work with VitrA to provide an excellent platform for demonstrating his philosophy of art and design and that his main goal in the project was to infuse his bathroom design with the full potential of the 21st century in technical, cultural and human terms. Ultimately, he said, the goal of this project was to create value-add for VitrA by combining the Lovegrove and VitrA brands.
Eczacıbaşı Group CEO Erdal Karamercan drew attention to the heightened importance of design in generating competitive advantage. "Consumers today have very subjective and complex demands," he said. "For them, quality, reasonable price and good distribution are common attributes; their primary priorities are designs that meet their requirements and tastes."
Karamercan noted that the Eczacıbaşı Group had long focused on design as a means to differentiate its brands, but that heightened international competition and the Group's drive to penetrate world markets had given this strategy a new urgency. "Our global brand VitrA is taking the lead in this area, because its business is based directly on design and it aims to strengthen its position in world markets. This is what inspired VitrA to cooperate with one of the rising stars of industrial design, Ross Lovegrove."
VitrA General Manager Şadi Burat said that he was very pleased to work with a leading brand in international design and added, "Design is the keyword of this century. Before, everyone focused on strategy and strategy development. Then, we went through the "total quality" stage. Now, design has come to the fore. In markets with hundreds of producers, businesses that cannot differentiate themselves from their competitors clearly do not have a chance of survival."
Ahmet Yamaner, General Manager of Eczacıbaşı Ceramic Tiles, pointed out that Turkish producers were catching up with Italy and France in the area of design and said, "Apart from its own design team, VitrA has worked with numerous national and international designers. Design is one of the most important components of differentiation. For this reason, I am confident that the products resulting from Lovegrove's designs and our superior technology will set the VitrA brand apart from other global brands."
