Smileyface September 26th, 2005, 02:05 AM I've finally got round to taking some pics around Manchester City Centre, in fact about 200 of them. Instead of posting them in all the relevant threads I'll just stick them all on here. These are posted in the same order of which I took them so you've got a rough idea of the route I took. i only had 3 hours spare so it was a bit of a rush job.

What a disgrace.
Bachy Soletanche September 26th, 2005, 03:36 PM I'm sure there's nothing like that in that there London.
That's why they got it
olli_ruhr September 26th, 2005, 04:06 PM And Manchester wonders why it never got the Olympics?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v173/Robdann/Manchester/PICT0037.jpg
What a disgrace.
lol...what a "great" reason....
if that would be a reason to get not the olympics, the olympic games wouldnt exist.
tell my one city in the world wich doesnt have areas like this.....ok..maybe a llittle town in the western of australia not ;-)
caw123 September 26th, 2005, 06:42 PM These are great Smiley!
Views from the Arndale car park have certainly evolved, I'm going back up there asap now.
highriser September 26th, 2005, 06:49 PM Great pic's Smiley,,i love this one

vertigosufferer September 26th, 2005, 08:07 PM Who's the guy on top of Arndale waving?? Something really needs to be done about the cladding on that tower. Some great photo's from angles I've not seen before, and some less than flattering photo's (not you taking them, the subject being viewed).
Still agree with Olli - every city has it's unkempt area's.
Sir Miles Platting September 26th, 2005, 10:04 PM Olli's mob should have dropped just a few more bombs on Manchester :jk:
olli_ruhr September 26th, 2005, 10:19 PM really very good pics of my favourite city :-)
kebabmonster September 26th, 2005, 10:22 PM Gruß Olli, schön, dass Du hier vorbeischaust!
Every city does indeed have its unkempt areas. Even Sydney, which arguably held the best Olympics ever, offers a delightful area called Kings Cross, the likes of which has never graced Manchester's street scene, thankfully.

That's all the city centre ones, they are the result of a 3 hour dash around the city on Saturday morning. Next time I'm up in Manchester I'll take more time to get some better shots. I've still got a few more pics to post, they were taken on the Sunday from Hartshead Pike near Oldham, I'll post those up soon.
kids September 26th, 2005, 10:58 PM nice, lovely grit scenes.

I agree the view was amazing......I took about 15 shots while I was up there turning 360 degree's so if anyone's any good at stitching together photos to make a landscape feel free to have a go at it (I'm shite so I'm not gonna even attempt it). I'm just uploading them now so I'll post them in a bit.

I was a bit pissed on the Saturday night, but i think I would have remembered her!
Martin G September 27th, 2005, 01:27 AM Flippin' heck - it appears you've stuck up all 200-odd of the pics! That is one exhausting trekthrough there....! Brilliant! :)
Mine from Hartshead Pike will follow at some point - but they can't compete with the ones you've put up here anyway.
Jongeman September 27th, 2005, 01:33 AM Those were fuckin excellent..!
Smileyface September 27th, 2005, 01:34 AM Hey Martin your famous, your legs appear in the first pic of my (almost) 360 degree sweep from the Pike....anyone with stitching powers please feel free to make a panorama to die for

Martin G September 27th, 2005, 03:13 AM Well, here's the ones of the actual pike I took myself. The great thing about that afternoon was the weather and lighting kept changing so dramatically almost throughout the 45 minutes we were up there - we witnessed a huge downpour over South Manchester/Stockport, and then bright sunshine in between everything, and we recorded it in the pictures as it was happening......Luckily we escaped the rain, it only spat for a few moments without ever threatening to throw it down, but it was so breezy anyway the clouds quickly dispersed to leave great areas of clear blue sky - so I took advantage of this to get as many permutations of light and shade falling on the monument as possible.

Martin G September 27th, 2005, 03:15 AM And now, here are some views and panoramas (not as detailed as Smiley's excellent images cos my 4MP Olympus digicam is pretty crummy):
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a257/MartianGray/P9250017a.jpg
This sweeping 220º view (assembled from about a dozen shots) takes in Derbyshire & Cheshire to the south, through Disley, Hazel Grove and Stockport all the way through Manchester, then to Failsworth, Oldham, Lees and beyond towards the north! The Audenshaw reservoirs are also clearly visible.

This panorama is so long (195 degrees) it has to be split into half!
Stretching all the way from Ashton, through to Manchester and up to Oldham and beyond on this one!

EarlyBird September 27th, 2005, 10:17 PM Here you go Smiley! Sorry but all the ones before the Pike couldn't be included because there was a gap between the pics. :(

EarlyBird September 27th, 2005, 10:20 PM The last two images were also a bit out of place due to a gap. Here is an image with them excluded so you don't get a blurry bit, so part of the pano is missing:

9462 September 28th, 2005, 01:07 AM manchester always looks 'half the world away' in them pics, almost like its surrounded by a circle of fog
Bim September 28th, 2005, 01:22 AM The view is always like that whenever i've been up Werneth Low which is a similar distance, maybe nearer by a mile or two.
It's probably just that i choose the wrong days to go there...
Would like to see the view from "The Low" (< totally made up!) on a clear day *hint* :)

Werneth Low is nearer by a mile or so, and it seems slightly higher. Makes a big difference. The view from here is really good in the morning on a clear day......there's less pollution and the rising sun illuminates everything not only in town, but at the university, Salford Quays and Salford. It's a really spectacular sight.
Smileyface September 28th, 2005, 02:13 AM Great Stuff Earlybird. It was bloody windy up there so Martins photos and mine haven't come out too badly considering we were being constantly buffeted. Anyone who's never been up there take the time to do so, the contrasts in the landscape (you can view five counties from up there apparently) and the view and experience in general is awesome. It topped off a great weekend in Mancsville :)
Smileyface September 28th, 2005, 02:17 AM A new page so I think EB's stitched together pano from Hartshead |Pike deserves to go at the top

caw123 September 28th, 2005, 10:44 AM I've been up a hill a few miles north east of Heartshead Pike, it's part of Saddleworth Moor. There's a war memorial and a group of stones called 'Pots and Pans' which are famous apparently.
This particular hill is about 200m higher than the pike so you the horizon is a few miles further away. Jodrell Bank and Liverpool were both visible! :runaway:

^^ Indeed, that one lies above Uppermill/Greenfield a little further east and it's then one Smiley and me are planning to ascend the next time we're up there! :)

EarlyBird October 1st, 2005, 12:19 AM Does anyone mind if I create and distribute a wallpaper based on the photo of the dog? If not, any chance of it in higher resolution?
Martin G October 1st, 2005, 04:26 AM It's not THAT worthy of hype that pic. It's just a dog making out that he wants to shit all over Manchester...... what's the big deal?
