So what do people think to this new marketing campaign for Leeds?

More information will appear on various sites throughout the next few days following TV reports...

Reach For The Stars
Glittering launch for city's bid to join elite
BY NIGEL SCOTT
BUSINESS EDITOR
A MASSIVE campaign to promote Leeds into the premier league of world cities was given a glittering celebrity launch.
Stars of sport, stage, TV and radio turned out last night to endorse the city's new brand – Leeds. Live It. Love It.
The launch was held at the Victoria Quarter shopping centre and was hosted by two of the city's best known faces – ITV sport's Gabby Logan and Radio One DJ Chris Moyles.
Yorkshire band Embrace, who played two sellout concerts in the city earlier this year, were among the guests, as was Leeds United manager Kevin Blackwell.
The new logo, kept a secret for months, was finally unveiled at the climax of a specially-made 10-minute film which will form part of the campaign to move the city "up a league". Many of Leeds's – and Yorkshire's – best loved celebrities give messages of support in the film.
The responsibility of marketing the city falls to Marketing Leeds, an organisation set up by Leeds City Council and Leeds Chamber of Commerce, who will spearhead a drive to attract more income to Leeds, through tourism, business and education.Around £150,000 has already been ploughed into the project, with a further £100,000 from Leeds City Council to keep it running.
Leader of Leeds City Council, Coun Mark Harris, told last night's event: "Marketing Leeds is all about shouting louder and better about what a great place Leeds is."
Around 500 guests from the city's business, tourism and education sectors attended last night's champagne launch which ended with a laser light and ticker tape celebration.

A brand design
Celebrities joins civic leaders at launch of new marketing campaign to promote Leeds across the world
We've loved New York – now we're being asked to live, and love, Leeds. Business Editor NIGEL SCOTT witnesses the launch of a new brand for the UK's Visitor City of the Year.

LEEDS. Live it. Love it.
Five simple words which, it is hoped, will unite a city.
For the first time, Leeds has a brand to help it sell itself to the world.
And it was given a glittering, star-studded launch in the city centre last night.
The message is intended to lift the profile of the city in the same way as I Love NY became a flagship icon for New York from the late 1970s.
It is also intended to be a call to arms that everyone in the city – whatever their background – can rally behind.
The new brand has been created for Marketing Leeds, a company set up to promote the city – led by Leeds City Council and Leeds Chamber of Commerce – which has the backing of many of its leading businesses.
Around 500 specially invited guests from the business community packed into the Victoria Quarter for a launch night hosted by two of the city's most high profile celebrities – motormouth Radio One DJ Chris Moyles and ITV golden girl Gabby Logan.
Energy
The larger than life Moyles was at his boisterous best as he tried to whip up some excitement.
"I've nicked from these shops," he joked. But he appeared somewhat underwhelmed by the reaction, adding: "It's like a morgue – but with expensive wine."
Gabby, who was presented with specially branded baby-grows for her recently born twins, said she owed a great deal to the city and the role it had played in her life.
Other celebrities at last night's launch event included former Leeds United footballer turned media star Lee Sharpe; writer Kay Mellor and her actress daughter, Gaynor Faye; Leeds United manager Kevin Blackwell and Yorkshire band Embrace.
The launch event included the premiere of a film designed to reflect all that is best about Leeds, packed with ringing endorsements from many of the city's, and Yorkshire's, best known faces.
Ricky Wilson, dynamic front man of Leeds band, the Kaiser Chiefs, said: "We've been all around the world, but there's no better feeling than getting back to Leeds."
Actress Patsy Kensit, who has brought a touch of film star glamour to Emmerdale, added: "I love the energy…the people of Leeds are fantastic."
And Yorkshire and England cricket hero Michael Vaughan, said: "The people of Leeds are very friendly. I guess that's why so many people love it."
The new brand – created by Leeds-based marketing company, an agency called england – has been a carefully guarded secret in the city for months.
It was finally unveiled at the climax of the ten-minute film, set to the sound of Ashes by Embrace.
Including research and development, the new brand has cost around £150,000 to date – a sum described as "modest" by Marketing Leeds in terms of the impact it believes it will have in raising the profile of the city.
And it has been very much a Leeds project – with less than three per cent of the cost being spent with businesses outside the city.
Secret
Kevin Johnson, chief executive of Marketing Leeds, explained the thinking behind the logo.
"Leeds has achieved so much over the past 20 years and has so much to be proud of but at the moment it is a well-kept secret, even in neighbouring parts of the UK.
"Our first challenge, or opportunity, is to make Leeds famous beyond Yorkshire."
He said research had shown a real "perception reality gap" between outdated views of a grimy, industrial northern city that once had a great football team and the vibrant dynamic city so loved by its residents.
The initial marketing focus will be on the UK domestic market and near European markets with air routes to Leeds Bradford International Airport.
The aim is to encourage everyone in the city to support the brand and to "adopt" it as their own.
Mr Johnson added: "This is a city vision, not a Marketing Leeds vision. Beyond the launch, there is a real desire to transfer the ownership of the vision and brand to the people of Leeds, to make it their own and to harness the pride they feel in their city.
"If the people of Leeds respond as positively as we hope then we have the most highly motivated group of ambassadors a city could ever hope for."
Leeds City Council leader, Coun Mark Harris, who spoke at the event, said Marketing Leeds represented an excellent opportunity to raise the national and international profile of the city and to move Leeds "up a league".
"Everyone in Leeds is rightly proud of all the city has achieved, and one of our priorities is to continue taking Leeds up a league and building on our successes. Marketing Leeds will work with, and for, all of us – for the benefit of our businesses, culture and all our communities."
Bold
High-profile Yorkshire businesswoman, and chairman of Marketing Leeds, Jan Fletcher, told the Yorkshire Evening Post: "Leeds is at a cross-roads and we need to be bold and brave about the future. We need firmly to position the city before other cities overtake us."
Her views were endorsed by Wayne Bowser, the recently elected president of Leeds Chamber of Commerce, who warned Leeds could not afford to be complacent.
But the director for West Yorkshire of HSBC Bank added: "There is no reason why Leeds should not compete as a major international player – a challenging prospect at present, but with Marketing Leeds, an achievable goal nonetheless."

-Jan Fletcher is the chairwoman of Marketing Leeds.
-I think a website using this name needs to be launched asap for people to refer to if they want to find out about the city, instead of being directed to the council site as current. I have a feeling this will be done momentarily...

Because Jan Fletcher is chairwoman of Marketing Leeds and therefore well known by the council, I think it is probably city one will get planning permission as they are assured she is genuinely interested in the best of the city, rather than the cheapest, most profit making development for her benefit, like what some towers (not necesserily in Leeds) do.

New Leeds brand is revealed
26 September 2005

An influential cross-section of Leeds gathered in the city’s sumptuous Victoria Quarter this week for the much-anticipated unveiling of the new Leeds brand: Leeds Live it Love it.

The event, co-hosted by Radio One’s most listened to DJ Chris Moyles and ITV sports presenter Gabby Logan, was attended by a wealth of Leeds talent with around 500 specially invited guests from the business world, the public sector, travel trade, media, and entertainment. The new Leeds promotional film was also premiered which included appearances from Michael Vaughan, Patsy Kensit, Kaiser Chiefs, Embrace, and Leigh Francis. The film’s sound track is Ashes from Embrace’s double platinum album (Out of Nothing).

Speaking at the event, Jan Fletcher OBE, international businesswoman and chairman of Marketing Leeds, said:

“ Leeds Live it Love it really evokes the pride and passion that people have about the city – and its buzz and vitality. Everyone from residents, visitors, students, commuters and business people say the same thing: try Leeds and you’ll love it. Like all great brands, ‘Leeds Live it Love It’ tells a universal truth.”

Leeds is increasingly recognised for business, culture, shopping, students and nightlife. It has recently been voted Britain’s Best City for Business; Visitor City of the Year; the UK’s Best University Destination, Best Place to Live and even Britain’s Sexiest City.

Kevin Johnson, Marketing Leeds’ chief executive, said;

“Our brand serves many purposes – it is a promise, a call to action and a statement of pride. Our proposition is neither selective nor specific, it is unconditional. It does not depend on social class, ethnicity, background, gender or upbringing. Leeds is a place where you can Live it and Love it.”

Notes
Leeds is an exciting vibrant city with so much to offer and now it's time to tell the world. Marketing Leeds is a new organisation created to raise the profile of the city of Leeds. Leeds City Council was one of the founder members and remains one of the champions of the organisation. Marketing Leeds is now working in partnership with the public and private sectors to promote Leeds as the place to work, live, visit and do business.

We can all be very proud of our city

An arena at this time would certainly make the Leeds brand more attractive.

The city needs to take risks if it wants to be regarded as a progressive city - which means going for arthouse cinemas, arenas and conference venues.

Fred2
September 29th, 2005, 01:00 PM
I agree with you. But I think the risks, compared to the rewards, would be minimal. With an arena, for example, one of the bidders has promised that no funds would be required from the city council for its proposal.

Read in the paper this am that London Mayor, Ken Livingstone, is to impose his will in refurbishing Oxford Street. I hold absolutely no brief for the man, but he has been successful with the congestion charge, and I like the way the London buses are run (I would dearly like to see the same system in place in Leeds). I definitely think there is a case to be made for a strong elected mayor rather than the dithering we often get from councils. At present in Leeds with a coalition council it seems to be worse. An example is the furore about the renovation of Roundhay Park Mansion. After years of complaining about Labour’s proposal to include council offices in the building, the coalition’s final plan is hardly any different.

Agreed.
I'm a bit removed from it all, so it may not be true, but the Labour councillors appear to have used a few key issues to score political points against their rivals. Not good.

Maybe i should put myself forward as the man to 'clean up city hall'.

I was in town yesterday, 'the Leeds Live it, love it' purple signs were plastered on the lamposts across the city. Can't say I was really impressed by them, they looked ok but didn't really convey any positive message to me. Maybe it will make more sense to a non Loiner.

Row over second-hand city slogan

Leeds wants to project a vibrant image in the campaign
A new slogan aimed at boosting the global image of Leeds is the same as one used in a two-year-old campaign in Hong Kong, it has been revealed.
The 'Live it Love it' slogan was unveiled at an event on 26 September.

The agency which devised it said it did so independently and only later realised it had already been used.

Opposition Labour councillors are demanding an explanation and asking whether the city has got value for £150,000 research and launch costs.

Councillors raised their concerns after learning that the city of Hong Kong tourist chiefs used an identical slogan in 2003.

Councillor Keith Wakefield said: "I fully support the campaign to market Leeds nationally and internationally.

"But given all the money that we have spent on consultants to come up with the slogan and the glitzy launch, I would have thought that the Liberals and Tories running the council could have thought of an original idea rather than one that is two years old.

"It just looks like we have copied Hong Kong rather than coming up with a unique brand of our own.

"I think we need an explanation as to how this has happened and whether the people of Leeds have got value for money."

Hong Kong tourist officials first used the slogan in 2003

Councillor Stuart Bruce, the Labour member for Middleton, said on his weblog: "This is more than just sad. Some of us really do live in and love Leeds and just wish people who are being paid respectable fees and salaries to do a job would do it a bit better."

But Kevin Johnson, the chief executive of Marketing Leeds defended the campaign and the 'Live it love it' slogan which was produced by the firm An Agency Called England, an advertising, design and public relations company.

He said the cost of developing the Live it Love it brand was zero, but the research, printing and launch show had so far cost £150,000.

He said the organisation's total budget, including salaries was £850,000 with most of the money coming from local businesses plus some from the city council and the regional development agency Yorkshire Forward.

Tony Stanton, the chief executive of An Agency Called England said he had come up with the 'Live it Love it' idea completely independently and only in the process of due diligence did he find it had been used elsewhere.

"The Hong Kong campaign targeted North American tourists on city breaks.

"We took the view we could use it as a brand as opposed to an ad campaign.

"We're big enough to know we wouldn't fool anybody, it's not conflicting or an issue for us."

No-one was available for comment from the London office of the Hong Kong Tourist Board .

The £150K was for the marketing budget - image production, posters, ads etc - not the design realisation. England have openly admitted they ahem, were inspired by the HK effort from a few years back. Anyway, for Leeds to be associated with one of the most incredible metropolis' in the world can only be a good thing!

That's true, but then on the other hand nothing it says is a lie, and you can't expect something like this to say bad things, otherwise it would defeat their whole object. If something bad is forced to face it then it will describe it as an asset rather than competitiveness- for example, (made up example) because Manchester Airport is bigger, it will not say that unfourtanetley Leeds does not a large international airport, but it will say something like 'along with Leeds' very own international airport, Manchester Airport is only an hours drive away'. In other words, everything it says might need to be interpreted differently to get the full story.

Yep so do I, but it will all be worth it in the end, and its probably encouraging to shoppers. Still, there will be unaffected areas such as Briggate, Albion Place, Lands Lane for example. I hope that the bridge from the Trinity Quarter- Leeds Shopping Plaza (which I still have an urge to call the Bond Street Centre..) is rebuilt or at least something done to it. It is too big, a smaller walkway with lots of glass to eliminate the splitting and darkening effect would be much more useful.

NEW YEAR"S EVE 2005 @ LEEDS

Didn't quite know where to post this but decided this was probably the best place for it.

On New Year's Eve I am planning another party bash in Leeds with my Manchester friends. I know the council has cancelled its annual Millennium Square bash, but does anyone know if the firework display will still take place? Also, I am trying to establish which pubs are going to be open without a charge at the door because we're probably going to have a wee drinkypoo pubcrawl followed by a (must be high class) club venue to finish the night. PS. Digging out this year so we don't have to spend 3 hours at Leeds City Station waiting for a taxi!

Leeds city centre sees the return of one of the UK's largest traditional German Christmas Markets - Christkindelmarkt - this winter.

Over 40 authentic wooden stalls and carousel rides are set to take over Millennium Square between Thursday 24 November and Wednesday 21 December 2005.

Jan Fletcher: I'll always support city

http://editorial.jpress.co.uk/web/Upload/LEED//TH1_13520087fletcher.jpg
Jan Fletcher talks exclusively to the YEP.
13 May 2008
By Nigel Scott
Business Editor - EXCLUSIVE
SHE may have stepped down from the chairman's seat at Marketing Leeds – but Yorkshire's top businesswoman says she will not walk away from supporting the city.

Jan Fletcher says she remains "too passionate" about Leeds to let her varied business interests divert her from offering her talents to the city's cause.

The former Veuve Cliquot British Businesswoman of the Year last week announced her decision to step down from the board of the city's destination marketing organisation after more than four years.

Jan, who won an OBE in 1997 for her services to industry, cited the need to concentrate on her business interests.

But in an exclusive interview she told the YEP: "I'm not leaving it. There's no way. I am too passionate and involved in the city to leave it behind.

"I'm fiercely proud of Yorkshire and Leeds. I'll still be there giving it my utmost support and continuing to shout for Leeds all over the world and the region."

Looking back on her tenure, she says: "We have achieved an awful lot in a short space of time, albeit the public can't always see the hard work that is going on behind the scenes.

"We have built up our brand – Leeds. Live It. Love It. – which is very visible now.

"A lot of the businesses and professionals are using it across the city, as are the universities.

"Everyone across the city seems to have bought into the branding. It is something we should all be proud of."

She says any suggestion her departure is due to a potential conflict of interests – a possible Sweet Street site for the Leeds arena is on the doorstep of her City One development project – is untrue.

She said: "If you are in business, you occasionally have conflicts of interest. As long as you deal with them honestly and with integrity, and you declare your interest, then that's fair. I haven't stepped down because of that at all."

"Honesty and integrity is vitally important and it's something that is number one on my list."

Of the arena plan itself, she says: "It is desperately needed and it will be vitally important – not only for the local community and for Yorkshire, but also to bring international people and events into the city.

"It needs to be a proper entertainment complex offering lots of different things, not just a tin shed that only is there for an odd pop concert or sporting event."

l SELLING Leeds to the World – read what some of the city's highest profile business people have to say about Leeds' ambitions to move up a league in Wednesday's YEP Business supplement.

Well it lets us know a few things such as according to her words her decision to leave Marketing Leeds was not due to a conflict of interest although still no progress on the actual state of the City One development. Also I can't think how in my opinion the Leeds Live It Love It slogan in my opinion has been that much of a marketing tool for Leeds since it was launched. I have never seen anything in the national press promoting this idea and surely it can't personally be taken that seriously since it was known to have taken that slogan from the Hong Kong Tourist Board and of course it has since been used by somewhere else I think in Australia or New Zealand which is even promoted in banner adverts on this website.
