Eilat railway approved as national infrastructure project

The initial cost of the project is estimated at NIS 6.6 billion.

Gal Nissim 28 Sep 05 12:04

Sources inform "Globes" that the Eilat railway project has been approved as a national infrastructure project. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and the ministers of finance and internal affairs gave the go-ahead for fast track approval by the national infrastructures committee. The initial cost of the project is estimated at NIS 6.6 billion.

The project involves a 286-kilometer railway from Beersheva to Eilat Port, by way of Dimona and Har Zin. The project has two sections. The first includes upgrading and doubling the existing 91 kilometers of railway track between Beersheva and Har Zin. The second consists of laying 165 kilometers of track from the phosphates area near Har Zin through the Arava to Eilat Port. Railway stations are planned in Dimona, Merkaz Sapir, Zofar, Paran, Hevan, Ya’alon, Lotan, Yotvata, and Tamar. Travel time from Tel Aviv to Eilat will be three hours. The line may be electrified at a later stage.

This is good news :)

An easier way to get to Eilat finally :)

I think Eilat should build a terminal for buses and trains...so that it would be easier for them to assist in traveling from the city and all......

what about underground in Tel Aviv FIRST!!!
THIS SHOULD BE NATIONAL PRIORITY, NOT SOME STUPID RAILWAY TO EILAT!

It is far from stupid it takes 6 hours to get there from tlv by bus .

It is going to take 3 hours by train which is much more comfortable .

And most important think about the costss( fuel / truck repair / time / driver salary.......) of transfering products from eilat harbor
to a different harbor in israel .

pegasus, eilat harbour is very small, and anyways you can deliver goods by air as well.. less than one hour.

yes for gods sake build it already!!

even 3rd world countries have undergrounds or light rail trains!
tel aviv is the only place that the ratio between necessity and progress
of the underground is gazilion to zero.

that too!
it pretty much connects the negev to most of the north!
Can u imagine...51% of your country not in use...and now your making the best of that 51% by making a rail system.

sure...Tel Aviv needs an underground....but where and how?

I think they can integrate it the Light rail system that there building..
And something that woul be cool is making underground rail and then soem canyonim underground as well as path ways..that would be something :)

A lot of cities in the world don't have metro or light rail system, including some first world cities. Its better late than never. Besides, why did it take so long to build it anyways?

I generally agree with source - a true subway in Tel Aviv is much more important.

Why is it that people think one is more important than the other, they are both just as important and the fact one is being built doesnt affect or change the fact the other should and will be eventually built, peace :)

They're not just as important. The one is an urgent need, the other one isn't.

Yea, the Eilat thing can be built in the phase of 20 years.

Tel Aviv has a traffic problem.
:) I was in Azrieli, eating in Burger Ranch overlooking the Ayalon at 5:15pm.... it was pretty bad. So bad, that i took a picture ofi t..

and i shall show you it soon:)

Tel Aviv needs a metro - and now with oil prices up 20 percent it would be very
energy conserving as well!!

Its not urgent, its super-urgent. Tel Aviv centrum gets klogged up every day from about 6:30 in the morning to 6:30 at night and then the streets are so paved with cars that in some you cant pass without denting your car at least twice.
not to even begin to mention traffic jams in and out of tel aviv in 7-10am and 5-9 pm.

The talks about having a railway go through the Negev Desert to Eilat isn't something new.

It is something we need.
We need to use our Negev resources and land use as much as possible....
not overcrowd it or anything, but to actually make places there to live and for people to prospour...
