View Full Version : Tartu development thread
ch1le September 30th, 2005, 04:24 PM i think i should do a small thread about this. This is the render of tartus new Department store, its kinda like Viru centre (in ideology), i really love it, its almost finished now and will open in a month. Its right in the CBD of Tartu!

jimm September 30th, 2005, 04:31 PM Quite OK looking. How does CBD of Tartu look like? Do you have some areal images of it?
Aiwa September 30th, 2005, 04:47 PM I've been in Tartu this summer, and I saw this building, looks good & massive, and in a very good place...
Jarmo K September 30th, 2005, 04:56 PM what the hell is tartu cbd???? :D:D:D:D:D
Gatis September 30th, 2005, 06:21 PM That's where Tartu highrise district is ;)
Edd September 30th, 2005, 06:46 PM Interesting, I hope one day Vilnius will have CBD too. :D
sander September 30th, 2005, 08:26 PM Looks cool. But some people have said that this building is too massive for Tartu.

ch1le September 30th, 2005, 09:11 PM doesnt look massive to me... besides, the area will develop rapidly, Emajõr business centre II will be uc soon, and next to it Ahhaa centre! This area will look so great!
S.T.A.S. September 30th, 2005, 10:18 PM Chhhheck it out...
http://img287.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img04724uk.jpg
ch1le September 30th, 2005, 10:39 PM aah, the pic isnt working on the page, but when you copy the url it works! Nice pic though, weather is bad and subject is poorly in place, i must really go to Tartu soon and do a big thread about it!
Edd September 30th, 2005, 11:37 PM http://img287.imageshack.us/img287/4614/img04724uk.jpg
John September 30th, 2005, 11:54 PM lol "CBD of Tartu"
what about CBD of Balbieriskis? :D
Edd September 30th, 2005, 11:55 PM @ch1le: It's not bad for Tartu but still even with this "mega" project your words are false ;)
Tartu (100 000 people) looks bigger then Kaunas (400 000 people).
It should be compared to Siauliai (146996) or Panevezys (133347).
Anyway, I hope you'll make some photos of Tartu since we have not seen any photos from there for quite a long time already.
Aiwa October 1st, 2005, 11:18 AM Tartu looks bigger than Kaunas???? Are you kidding?? Tartu is very beutifule, thats true, but thats all, its a nice small city. But comperaing Kaunas & Tartu looks silly ;)
Saulene October 8th, 2005, 11:26 AM Tartu looks bigger than Kaunas???? Are you kidding?? Tartu is very beutifule, thats true, but thats all, its a nice small city. But comperaing Kaunas & Tartu looks silly ;)
Well, not that silly, 'cause Tartu is the second biggest city of Estonia and by the cultural (and other) events taking place in Tartu, by the importance to Estonia of Tartu university and its Library, Tartu looks more modern and developed than Kaunas, unfort.
Yes, Tartu could be compaired to Panevė˛ys by it's size, some wooden + commieblocks areas, and by it's communications - railways, buss-connections and shops, but that's all. If you don't value people, their education, initiatives and energy, then yes: Panevė˛ys may look even better than Tartu to you.
ch1le November 8th, 2005, 05:02 PM i think this should be renamed into Tartu Development thread...
A 23 Storey (about 70m) high residential highrise got its construction Permit in Tartu... Not bad! ITs not far from the existing highrise Emajõe business centre (Pläsku)
a Render:

ShuMi November 8th, 2005, 05:14 PM One weird highrise :D
ch1le November 8th, 2005, 05:15 PM /\ When completed, it will either be Fantastic or Terrible... no middle way through this ;)
Jarmo K November 8th, 2005, 07:21 PM pretty cool :)
btw - there have been many discussions in the estonian media about the new department store (see pics upstairs ^:D ) - most people, among them me and many other cultural people :D, hate it and think it ruins the whole central tartu, but the architect says that it's a fine piece of architecture... haaah! (:
anyway, yay, a new highrise!
ch1le November 8th, 2005, 08:50 PM more render...

Gatis November 8th, 2005, 09:28 PM The top of that highrise is a bit like caricature. While the main body looks interesting. Only - would it look that sophisticated in real life too?
Interesting that Tartu builds highrises too!
Whose Homepage November 8th, 2005, 09:47 PM Well, the planned Tartu highrise doesn't look half bad to me. At least it's not Variation #7098200064 on the generic box like the department store! :okay:
And would you please stop putting each other's cities down. :angel1:
ch1le November 8th, 2005, 09:48 PM /\ its just our nature! :D
I think the highrise is very interesting in design, looks like osmething that has crawled up from the seabed, but it can turn out UGLY if the wrong materials are used! So ill be HMMM about this project!
Jarmo K November 8th, 2005, 09:56 PM ^yep, use of materials will be crutial...
Whose Homepage November 8th, 2005, 09:56 PM /\ its just our nature! :D
I ought to :bash: you hard for that utterance, ch1le!
Estboy November 8th, 2005, 09:57 PM I don't know..it looks nice but please--leave the silly top:)
ch1le November 8th, 2005, 09:57 PM /\ but then again, tell me when Künnapuu & Padrik have used low quality materials before??? So, i think we have quite a big chance of it becoming a nice highrise
ch1le November 8th, 2005, 09:58 PM I ought to :bash: you hard for that utterance, ch1le!
mehehhe ;)
As you see when we get together its all different ;) Its just internet slack :D
Gatis November 8th, 2005, 10:10 PM As you see when we get together its all different Its just internet slack
Exactly!
S.T.A.S. November 8th, 2005, 10:35 PM I think they overdesgined the top, it's a no for me...but then again it's something new, i mean it's not a "box" building and I do like the renders and the positions the shots were took from...
Sideshow_Bob November 9th, 2005, 04:33 PM The highrise looks great!!
beta29 November 9th, 2005, 04:52 PM Awesome tower!!! This will be good for Tartu!
We need more of this stuff in Tartu.
vytauc November 9th, 2005, 04:57 PM I like the new tower- very very very original- could become an easily recognizable brandmark of Tartu.
Whose Homepage November 9th, 2005, 07:46 PM Yes, the tower would make a very nice landmark for Tartu! :)
ch1le January 4th, 2006, 04:34 PM two more highrises. im not sure about their state right now... one is 15floors other 20..

Gatis January 4th, 2006, 05:59 PM Both are a bit commieblockish, like common apartment towers nowadays. But Tartu getting both of them... now that would be interesting?!
Jarmo K January 5th, 2006, 05:52 PM wow!
the first one looks rather interesting.
but the second - yes, a true commie. but still - i think it'll fit right in. raatuse street would get another simple-looking highrise. quite positive, in my opinion!
i hope they'll be approved (:
p.s. - where's kalda street?
ch1le January 7th, 2006, 10:48 AM I agree Jarmo, the first one looks quite nice (though, wouldnt like to have it in Tallinn centre, only if a slimmer version)... and the second, yeah, modern commie
Enoch Root January 17th, 2006, 02:06 AM Here's the freshly announced, hugely controversial plan for new building of Estonian National Museum.
http://www.postimees.ee/170106/gfx/2665743cbcb6e559b5.jpg
There was an international architectural competition. The winner was announced this Monday. The winners are a team consisting of Italian architect Dan Dorell, Lebanese architect Lina Ghotmeh ja Tsuyoshi Tane from Japan. Their plan "Memory Field" is an 350 m long glass and concrete box, which looks like an extension to Soviet-time military airfield near Tartu (Raadi).
Official site of the competition (http://www.museumcompetition.org/en/)
The choice has been a controversial one because some of the members of the jury think that it glorifies the Soviet airfield and is thus unacceptable. Other criticisms include unsuitability for a museum building, huge maintenance costs etc. The vote among the members of the jury was 5-3 for this plan.
According to Estonian minister of Culture Mr. Raivo Palmaru, the main building should be ready at 2009 and the whole museum at 2010. The cost may be anywhere between 600-700 mio EEK. (1 euro=15.6466 EEK).
S.T.A.S. January 17th, 2006, 11:10 PM I actually don't know what to think of this project...I don't know how they won, but it looks plain simple, I mean a five year old could of won it!!!
Jarmo K January 18th, 2006, 06:14 PM i just DO NOT get it.
Gatis January 18th, 2006, 08:31 PM If they will master gradual transformation of matter from air (gaseous substance) to a building (solid substance) - that would be cool! :D
Renx January 18th, 2006, 08:48 PM Aside from some ideological considerations, I like this project very much (being an aviation-nut) and it would certainly be a one of a kind building. A runway IMHO symbolises the effort of moving forward and reaching one's goals... it looks like an idealist project to me and therefore I support it.
I saw some other proposals but none of them really matched this one in ingeniuty. One of them looked like a Borg cube from Star Trek and others didn't have a personality to speak of.
Enoch Root January 19th, 2006, 03:08 PM IMHO it's a cool project, but it may be that it's not very suitable for a museum building.
I also noticed the Borg cube :) But I would build it even more Borg-like then, and it should contain the Borg-like inner design. There should be some drone regeneration facilities for example, and maybe an assimilated Laine Jänes (Mayor of Tartu) as Borg Queen. :)
Renx January 19th, 2006, 07:24 PM There should be some drone regeneration facilities for example, and maybe an assimilated Laine Jänes (Mayor of Tartu) as Borg Queen. :)
ROFL :hahaha: Now that would be a sight. But don't you think it might scare away the visitors? Or were you planning to assimilate them?
But seriously, mixing history with fiction/visions of future might make this project much more interesting.
ch1le January 19th, 2006, 07:35 PM [star trek talk]Yeah! But mby species 8472 would come and destroy the cube![/star trek talk]
Enoch Root January 20th, 2006, 01:50 PM For those not so familiar with Star Trek:
Here's the 3rd place project from Estonian National Museum competition:

Jarmo K January 20th, 2006, 02:49 PM heehheheheeh!
at least this one looks like a building! :D
S.T.A.S. January 20th, 2006, 07:08 PM And is that suppose to be a national museum??? Wow very "don't know if i like it or hate it" thing on this one...Interesting!
Kim André March 21st, 2006, 05:27 PM I love Tartu!! :dance2:
Never been there though... :ohno:
:lurker:
Soo, are there any news on development of the different projects outlined in this thread? It's been quite some time since anybody has come with an update.
Rivkin March 23rd, 2006, 08:04 PM I,m not sure, if that 20 floor highrise will be built, coz this project has been cancelled once before(when Andrus Ansip was a mayor). But It's only my hope that my data is dated and this project is warmed up again, correct me if I'm wrong ;)
Eestimees November 9th, 2008, 12:09 PM Omg, is this topic dead ore something? :D
Anyway, Tigutorn is ready, so is Tasku.
