*yay* Finally something exciting! :)

The Newtown

Newtown, Johannesburg's Cultural Precinct, is about to get a funky new upmarket residential component! The once glorious Premier Milling Head Office is being converted into apartments - to be known as The Newtown.

The Newtown will consist of 30 new chic urban apartments and 7 breath-taking penthouses, each with stunning views over the Joburg skyline.

52% of The Newtown has already been sold in the first week.

Priced from R600,000 for a 57m^2 apartment to R810 000 for a 90m^2 apartment.

A couple years ago, who would've thought?

Way to do the SSCers proud! Thanks, Tom, for keeping us updated.. I am shocked to see development start in the CBD again :)

it does look pretty good, but those prices seem a little uninviting considering that the surrounding area isnt great yet. R10000/m2...should be lower imo

Yeah. It'll be interesting to see how they sell. Whether they actually do well or not.

It's a unique type of target audience, however... for example, don't expect to see these types of people living in Durban or Cape Town condos... these will be urban pioneers in a sense, too.

If the project does well I will have restored confidence in the inner city... but there is a great chance that people aren't ready for this type of thing yet... they should be, however, because the CBD is only going through this revival or it's nothing at all... take your pick. ;)

thing is, prices should start lower, considering that a block away, or even less, there is tons of run down blocks and uninviting areas. I believe that the type of people that this building is hoping to attract, would require high end stores on their doorstep, and all the amenities that go with their lifestyle. they dont want to be holed up in their building.

I believe the inner city revival should start by bringing in the lower to middle people first, once they have formed a critical mass to support the retail infrastructure, then bring in the high rollers. not the other way round!

There already are lower-end developments, an extreme example being Brickfields.

Just an update that this building is fully functioning and I should hopefully have photos soon as I have a friend whose sister has moved in here.

She says it rocks, although apparently it's rather noisy on weekends with Fuel Cafe, Kippies, Loaded and Carfax banging out tunes at all hours.
