View Full Version : Athens Highrises: Some night views
gm2263 October 3rd, 2005, 10:03 PM I recently found myself on the top floor of a 6-storey residential building in the Athenian district of Goudi, where the friend that invited me told me to bring my camera and my tripod with me. I didn't miss the opportunity and here are the results. Note that we are talking about an inner-city area that looks butt-ugly but, funny enough, like most Athenian inner city residential areas, ugliness is only limited to the exterior and indeed, my friend's house which has access to a beautiful terrace and one of the best views in the city, is very cozy and nice.
The pics that follow depict the few highrises of Ampelokipi district and are the ones that were first built in the city. From certain angles, they can be seen as forming a cluster. For more info on each of these buildings, click on the links provided in the pictures descriptions...
Here is a daytime view of all of them as seen from the lobby of the Hilton hotel:

Night Views:
1. Athens Tower and Lycabettus Hill, the tallest one in the city (270m)
http://briefcase.pathfinder.gr/download/gm22634/35743/479976/0/Athens+Tower+and+Lycabettus+-+small+800X600.jpg
2. Athens Tower (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=110579). Due to the lateness of the hour, only few security lights are on. It is much more spectacular in the early night hours during the winter.
http://briefcase.pathfinder.gr/download/gm22634/35743/479975/0/Athens+Tower+16+-+Night+view+from+Goudi.jpg
3. President Hotel rising over rooftops in Ampelokipi - Gizi. I don't know why the neighbourhood looks uglier that what it is in reality here.
http://briefcase.pathfinder.gr/download/gm22634/35743/479981/0/President+Hotel+5+-+Night+view+with+Menios+Neighbourhood-small.J
4. A Scene like coming from Gotham city with the President Hotel (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=110582) at a closer look.

5. The Apollo Tower (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=110578), the tallest residential in Athens. Believe it or not, one of the coolest places to live, located at the side of a hill and next to a metro station (Panormou, line 3 - blue) , offers an exceptional view of the city.

6. This is the Athens Expo Centre (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=148979), also accomodating the head offices of the Allianz Insurance company in a number of floors. Not a good picture but anyways worth a look in my view.

And I hope you enjoyed these ones as, with the exception of the Athens tower the rest have never been presented in the web like this.
I hope you enjoed these and wait for more, as I became mobile again... :)
And don't forget the ULTIMATE Athens Skyscrapers and Highrises thread (http://skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=216281) with the full story and the conspiracy theory against building tall in Athens. Just click on the link :):):)
gm2263 October 3rd, 2005, 10:34 PM Bonus: Athans Tower and Lycabettus Hill on a modified format, not including the ugly many of the ugly rooftops...

Vodka and photo-shooting is not the perfect combination I guess... :D

gm2263 October 11th, 2005, 08:23 AM Thet is true. I live in a suburb on the slope of a mountain and I have a nice view. In any case though, I used a zoom lens for all of them. Sometimes one must know how to frame the imagerie he wants to present...
gm2263 October 11th, 2005, 08:23 AM Double posting...
Giorgio October 11th, 2005, 10:42 AM i honestly cant wait for Athens to have a REAL skyline! i think a type of las vegas, a strip of highrises would work well (not casinos!) :D

I really preffer Athens the way (caos) it is now...u know in Spain it's not allowed to build big balconies anymore? that's something I love in Greece buildings, balconies...some buildings I hate, of course, but they r part of Greece, and it means part of it's charm
filakia
gm2263 October 11th, 2005, 08:37 PM No, thannk God, ALL residential buildings since ages ago have VERY large balconies. In fact, the larger the balcony, the higher is considered to be the social etiquette of the persons living in the building.
In fact, many the above pictures were taken from the balcony of a friend that lives in a very good quality residential built in an old neighbourhood though.
Balconies... yes, we love them :)

arTmisa October 12th, 2005, 11:10 PM Yes! I loooove them too :)
I had a huge balcony when I was working in Athens, it was around the corner and u could access it from many rooms ... it was a dream...
filakia
gm2263 October 13th, 2005, 09:53 AM And, speaking about balconies, one of the best examples of such an architectural approach to "living in the open" is this block of flats in my neighbourhood. Completed in 2004, it offers all the possible amenities in a green suburb, next to the mount Hymettus AND I really don't understand what more would its tenants ask for... :)
A bright image contrasting to the previous "Gotham city" style ones. Picture taken a few minutes ago (13 October 2005, 10:40 am)

gm2263: What part of Athens do you live in?
arTmisa October 13th, 2005, 08:24 PM Oh my Goddddd!!! I see the upper floor is empty, maybe for sale? :)
Every floor has 2 balconies? one round and one big????
ufffffffffffffffffffffff...anybody needs a secretary speaking spanish, english and λιγω Ελληνικά :colgate:
U r very lucky...how far is it from the center?
gm2263 October 14th, 2005, 09:13 AM @ Zornas and Artmisa
I live in the suburb of Papagos (or Papagou), to the east of the city, at the slope of mount Hymettys. I plan on making a presentation on this green, lowrise and beautiful suburb, not the typical dense inner city Athenian neighbourhood.
here's the location:
http://briefcase.pathfinder.gr/download/gm22634/36693/483163/0/Location+of+Papagos.jpg
and BTW, unfortunately, the top floor in the block of flats in the previous page is not for sale. It belongs to the owner who plans of giving it to his daughter or somethinf after she comes from her studies abroad. I mean, imagine us artmisa being neibours
And also BTW, for upper class foreigners who need to come to Greece and find an affordable location to stay, this is the place. The suburb is served by the metro and ther Athens ring road. Unfortunately, most of its houses were single unit residences but now things are changing :(. I still live in my two-storey house though...
arTmisa October 14th, 2005, 09:47 AM Oh! pity, hope the daughter finds a foreigner boyfriend and stay where she is
:jk:
I really like the building, but upper class foreigners is not what describes me :) ...I'd be more like...immigrant
what about prices? will u let me know?

gm2263 October 15th, 2005, 06:20 PM @ Kostya
Η υπόθεση των Ρώσων είναι απίστευτη και πιστεύω πως καλώς εχόντων των πραγμάτων μάλλον θα χτίσουνε και το Federation αλλά και το Russia Tower. Υπάρχει πολύ χρήμα και για να πω την αμαρτια μου, άμα δε χτίσει η Μόσχα, ποιός θα χτίσει βρε παιδιά;
cu all guys.
SEED October 16th, 2005, 06:51 PM some great pics!! Athens lit up pretty well at nite!
