GNU July 17th, 2007, 08:06 PM Not by anyone objective. There are some uninspiring buildings at Canary Wharf but none are really ugly. The Canary Wharf estate is generally much better planned. There are no gaping holes round the base of the buildings. Lobbies often have stunning designs as does the Tube station. Pedestrians and cars are kept on the same level. Canary Wharf has attractive human-scaled public spaces, perfectly manicured gardens, and everything looks so fresh and well kept. There are no weeds growing up between the cracked paving slabs or litter at Canary Wharf. There are large and glossy new shopping malls, some of London's best restaurants (Plateau, Ubon, Royal China, Gaucho etc), one of the best supermarkets I have ever seen - more like a food hall with its sushi and seafood bars (Waitrose at Canada Square), a Four Seasons Hotel, lots of bars in the converted warehouses along the dock at West India Quay, and a cinema multiplex. People often compare its squeaky cleanliness to Singapore. It's also beautifully set around the water and the night time reflections in the Docks are very attractive. That's why Canary Wharf is becoming an attractive place to live and why many of the new skyscrapers in the area are expensive residential towers with luxury penthouse apartments selling for £millions each. La Defense remains desolate at night. No one would ever want to live there amongst the multi-level decaying concrete and strangled by motorways. The whole environment is ugly, hostile, and inhuman.
Ive worked for a computer company in Canary Wharf.
The district is ok during work hours (although very expensive / 5 pounds for a sandwich) but have you ever been there on the weekend?
Its totally dead, wide streets cut through the urban space and its not very pedestrian friendly.
Yes, the Canary wharf station is amazing but apart from the rush hour in the morning and evening its also quite empty.
Surely that is because of its vast size and I could imagine that it gets more lively but in order to do so the area has to attract more residents.
There are residents there, as living space in London is in high demand but I wouldnt want to live there. I would always prefer to live in the city.
I knew a person who lived there for half a year and she got depressed because you feel so cut off from the rest of the city.
Go there on the weekend. You will maybe see a handfull of people in the whole area.
You also cant drive through the center as youll need identification.
Unless you work there youll not be able to enter it with your car.
And in order to get there youll have to go through that vast tunnel network (when you go by car)
What also dissapointed me was that they didnt create an ongoing pedestrian road at the Thames riverside.
Cycling along the Thames is a great way of travelling through London but you cant approach Canary warf that way which is a bit of a shame.
Blok July 17th, 2007, 08:12 PM I dont and thats because theres no 'iconic' skycrapers in Warsaw.Your buildings could be in any country.

Maurycy July 17th, 2007, 09:43 PM Im not impressed.Go to USA and youll find hundreds of similar towers.
I thought we 're talking about the best European skyline and as far as i know the USA is elsewhere. Besides in terms of skyscrapers every single european city comparing to american seems to be a crap.
Ridiculous.
Completely ridiculous.

Warsaw aspires to be a capital of CE/EE
Lol.Improve your roads first they are shit.
Roads are being imrpoved, but it has nothing to do that Warsaw does aspire to be the capital of this region and will in the near future achieve this status, cause considering the size and population of Poland it deserves it.
( Warsaw-CE, Kiev-EE in a few years).
Kiryl July 17th, 2007, 10:22 PM True.
For me Germany is in central europe, West-Germany ist in West Europe and East-Germany in East Europe. But theres not any official border. To be honest all these subdivisions doesnt make any sense today. We are europe. :)
Sorry, where is Berlin by this subdivisions?:)

ERGO PROXY July 21st, 2007, 01:18 PM Hello everyone! I think some of you make a mistake between nice skyline and a well developed city. Almost any town in US has a great skyline, but it is because of a bad city planning. Any 20 story tall building looks great next to 1 story house.

gm2263 August 4th, 2007, 02:04 PM I like the way Maslak looke from Buyukdere after the addition of "Mashhattan". Excellent skyline of moderate (until the topping out of DOI) height.
But the jaw-dropping thing will be Moscow after the Federation tower is completed. Russia is a rich country blessed with an abundance of natural resources that will definitely skyrocket in the decades to come.
ALL OUT FOR A TALL EUROPE!!! :)
mirza-sm August 4th, 2007, 02:16 PM depending on definition...
Central Europe for me: Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary maybe Slovenia and Croatia as well

Moscow and Istanbul will be the best within 3 or 4 years...
www.sercan.de August 11th, 2007, 01:23 PM ^^^
IMO not :D
Paris will have a great cluster. Nowaday its mabe to homogenous. But with the new 200-310m towers it will get a character
Moscow will need IMO more towers and more 100-200 towers
Istanbul's problem that it has got many clusters
Maslak is more like London City or Frankfurt. Dense and more cluster
Levent is like Sheik Zayeed Road. Towers along the Büyükdere Avenue
Levent's possible future Skyline

Istanbullu August 11th, 2007, 01:25 PM In 5-10 years time I think it will be like:
Moscow
Paris
Istanbul
gm2263 August 11th, 2007, 01:56 PM Paris will have a "mature" skyline and I hope they will build the new 300+ towers planned. It will always be the most progressive city in Europe in that whatever new trends in urban planning there were, Paris was first to adopt them.
Moskva will be the most dynamic meta-tall city in Europe, perhaps pairing with Longon if the Shard and Bishosgate are built. Both cities have HUGE potential and may overcome Paris in terms of thrust in urban dynamics.
Istanbul will be the Leader in Eastern Europe. Warsaw is excellent and adorable but when the DOI and the Saphire and hopefully the Dubai Towers are built, The Queen of Cities, the Big Empress of Three civilizations will rise again as the absolute queen in half of the European continent. Sorry folks but this is the plain truth...
I may be a bit biased for the supremacy of the queen of cities but to the east of Frankfurt, south of Moscow, and north of the emirates the choices seem to be limited...

but warsaw is very good but its not near paris or frankfurt in my opinion
In the future istanbul, moscow, and london will have a world class skyline. *they are improving so fast.
Maurycy August 31st, 2007, 10:43 AM Wow very optimistic of you! All big cities in exception of Frankfurt are building or have +250m towers right now and Warsaw doesn't even have approved ones, not even proposed ones. How do you expect Warsaw to be at the top in 2012?
Wola district is booming and in the near future will become a second slightly lower cluster (vicinity of WTT). In the center, Libeskind tower is UC (192m), Hines tower (160m) - construction to start soon. We're still waiting for sth really BIG (+250), the whole city is buzzing with rumours, but nothing confirmed yet, that's true. But I'm 100% certain that some huge towers are just around the corner.
It will get big ones
Sapphire - 261m - u/c (13th fl) - Levent
Diamond Of Istanbul - 270m - u/c (8th fl) - Maslak
Dubai Towers - "260" and "300"m - proposed - Levent
good for You! that will make Istanbul's skyline much more resounding.
Its Istanbul not Istambul!!
Sorry, that's cause polish spelling is diffrent and there's "m" instead of "n".
www.sercan.de August 31st, 2007, 11:41 AM like spanish then :D
Do you really think that Europe will have cities with a world class skyline?
Brisbane, Melbourne, Seoul etc
even those cities build more +200 towers (not counting moscow :D)
calenzano August 31st, 2007, 11:45 AM like spanish then :D

Sincerely task that no European city can catch up the levels of New york, Chicago, Honk kong, Shangai, Singapore

Thanks. There is still a lot of work to do in Warsaw, but in a few years it'll become a real world city. Every single day it's just booming, changing beyond recognition.

it really doesnt fit the generally outstanding beauty of the city.
Flogging Molly November 2nd, 2007, 01:53 PM I think Birmingham will continue to challenge the bottom end of the top 20 soon enough!
I think we all know which the top 5 are, I think we should focus more on the up and coming skylines. Vienna's is pretty poor compared to Birmingham's and Liverpools.

stefanguti November 2nd, 2007, 10:47 PM The real ugly part of the Vienna Cluster are the United Nations & IAEA Headquarters. Built in the 70's, they should have done it better. Higher. The form is ugly. I don't like it. The new builduings are a little better... Anyway Vienna has more to offer then skylines...

cityscapes December 15th, 2007, 04:58 AM ^^ The short buildings aren't commies they are part of an industrial area.

Is it possible to see these commieblocks closer? Are there pics of these old commieblocks here in SSC?
May be someone from Turkey could help to answer to this question?

Haha, these aren't commieblocks. They are industrial storages of past times which are going to be destroyed sooner or later in this fast grwoing district. ;)

lukay December 16th, 2007, 02:50 AM Right now:
1. Frankfurt
2. Paris
3. Moscow
4. Istanbul
5. Warsaw
6. London
7. Rotterdam
8. Madrid
In 10 years (if most proposed projects go ahead):
1. Moscow
2. Paris
3. Frankfurt
4. London
5. Istanbul
6. Rotterdam
7. Warsaw
8. Madrid
Wow very optimistic of you! All big cities in exception of Frankfurt are building or have +250m towers right now and Warsaw doesn't even have approved ones, not even proposed ones. How do you expect Warsaw to be at the top in 2012?
Would you guys like to reconsider? lol

There was few other forumers on here who were saying how they are not impressed and Warsaw doesnt have any interesting skyscrapers. Better yet how Warsaw can't compeat with cities like London, Paris and Istanbul. Impressed yet? How many skyscraper proposals designed by Zahah Hadid do you have in your cities?

Brad December 18th, 2007, 01:48 PM 4 more high towers for Madrid and it will have one of the best skylines in Europe
gm2263 December 18th, 2007, 10:00 PM Other cities in Europe would kill to have four towers in a row flirting with or surpassing 200m as in the case of torre espacio, and the rest in its neighbourhood.
Make no mistake, Madrid Rocks!!!

Congrats, Russia, welcome back :)!!!
erbse December 21st, 2007, 09:35 PM Moscow's the capital of the biggest country on the entire globe. It was about time to get a proper skyline.
Nothing outstanding hitherto, but let's look forward for the Russia tower. Really hope this doesn't end in a jumbly mess - way too many different styles proposed up there. The tower designs should be more balanced, a chaotic modern look like the advised one wouldn't make the best impression, rather tacky - like Dubai or many Chinese cities. I hope it may show some times more taste than these, just a duty as a European city, isn't it?
Blok December 21st, 2007, 10:32 PM for me russia is a word...
seth-underneath December 22nd, 2007, 02:19 AM I be fine with Frankfurt, Paris, London, Rotterdam, Warsaw, Moscow and Madrid. The others aren't really that worth talking about, sorry ;)
gm2263 December 22nd, 2007, 10:15 AM I have the mild suspicion that there have to be at least five cities in Russia that are candidates for a decent skyline for the next ten years. Russia displays a dynamism and economic robustness and at least in terms of construction I would always keep an open eye for the developments there.
Now, want it or not, the list of European highrise capitals should include Istanbul as regardless of the existence of an already mature skyline and numerous modern clusters, there are two towers above the 250m mark under construction in the European side amidst already existing clusters (Levent and Maslak).
BTW how's Milan doing with this regeneration project and the towers designed by Hadid, Isozaki and Liebeskind? Milan is a candidate to enter the European highrise stardom with these.
Plus we have Bratislava, Vienna, Beograd, Pristina, and a number of other smaller Balcan stars that should not be neglected as they already make considerable efforts to modernize their skylines :). But that's going to be clearly evident in 2010 - 2015.
Europe's getting taller :).
erbse December 22nd, 2007, 02:17 PM Europe's getting taller :).

Jakob December 24th, 2007, 12:22 PM Istanbul's scrapers look awful. But the skyline is recognizable for sure.
Tastes are different and every city has its own style. I don't like the towers in Paris either, but it's not the style I prefer.
Istanbul offers a huge amount of high quality skyscrapers such as Kanyon, Kempinski Residences Astoria, Kempinski Bellevue Residences, Polat Tower, Is Bank Towers, AI Tower, Sun Plaza and many more. Those towers are on the highest standarts level like few others in Europe. Sapphire Tower, Dubai Towers and Diamond of Istanbul are on the way. But of course, there are crap towers like in other European cities as well...

Dziggy December 26th, 2007, 10:16 AM for me- Warsaw. It has a skyline that was made in many years, and other big cities like London, Paris, Frankfurt, made their business centers by a plan, so Warsaw has a skyline that is spontaneus and very pleasent. I saw some new plans for a skyscrapers there, and i hope they won't ruin the view... ;)
Brad December 26th, 2007, 11:52 AM ^^'Spontaneous' is not a plus.
Maurycy December 27th, 2007, 01:24 AM ^^
NY,Chicago, LA - all these are spontaneous "skylines". It means that in Warsaw skyscrapers grow naturally, not as a plan or sth as in Paris or Moskow. (of course I don;t mean Hong-Kongish mess) And unlike in the mentioned cities skyscrapers in Warsaw are in the very center of the city not making business enclaves.
OWT-75 December 27th, 2007, 01:35 AM skyscrapers in Warsaw are in the very center of the city not making business enclaves.
Thats right they are part of the city life no other european city have so many scyscrapers right in the city center thats why Warsaw is the city of scyscrapers not just with scyscrapers like Paris, Madrid etc.
erbse December 27th, 2007, 01:55 PM ^ Yeah, of course. Frankfurt also has all its skyscrapers in the city center and doubtlessly has much more of them than Warsaw.
