View Full Version : Liverpool Eye?
Chris B October 4th, 2005, 11:21 PM Anyone know what happened to the so-called Liverpool Eye to be sited near the Canning Dock? The latest Daily Post report I can find is from March and says a bid has been submitted to have it there for Year of the Sea - Clicky (http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/capitalofculture/news/tm_objectid=15351009%26method=full%26siteid=50061-name_page.html) .The wheel's owners have no mention of it on their site - World Tourist Attractions (http://www.worldtouristattractions.co.uk/index.html). I noticed a wheel at Gateshead, whilst watching The Great North Run on TV a few weeks ago, wonder if this is the same one? Kinda like a they got CofC, so we'll take their wheel kind of situation?
JUXTAPOL October 4th, 2005, 11:31 PM How many of these wheel's are there, there is one in Manc/Brum/Gateshead/London.
We should be different and have a giant Slide straddling the mersey, start at top of Beetham West heading down across the Mersey. The end of the slide will have an up part to catapult you into the air and across to Birkenhead where there is a giant bouncy "Will Alsops 4th Disgrace" to capture you. :) Price £10 one way.
Chris B..........Just noticed youre a long time lurker, welcome to the forums, I lurked here for about 1 year before posting
Chris B October 5th, 2005, 12:27 AM Thanks, I've been lurking since about January. Thought it was about time I put my tuppence worth in. Nice idea about the slide, although you'll only ever get half a slide as LCC would never give planning permission for their half. Seriously it would be nice for Liverpool not to play follow the leader with regards to wheels springing up across the country.
Pietari October 5th, 2005, 11:28 AM Now a nice big fairground would be the biz!
All those screams!
Ice cream, you scream, who`s yer friend? :runaway:
caw123 October 5th, 2005, 07:22 PM How about a cable car from the top of West Tower to the other side of the Mersey? ;)
westisbest October 20th, 2006, 04:53 PM Wheel is now up in williamson suare. A meer 114ft

I saw it half up yesterday. I was hoping it was a send up from the Independents section of Biennial - totally naff. Bring back the kiddy fountain!
Williamson square. What's it Like?
Martin S October 20th, 2006, 10:37 PM Don't worry its only temporary. At 114' should get some nice piccies from up there. Maybe if its popular we'll get a proper one.
Chris B October 25th, 2007, 06:18 PM I thought I'd drag this thread back for it's once yearly outing. From the Planning Explorer -
Application Number - PL/INV/3160/07
Site Address - Williamson Square, Liverpool, L2
Proposal - To erect giant observation wheel
Applicant - World Tourist Attractions Ltd
The companies website - http://www.worldtouristattractions.co.uk/ - suggests their wheels are 60 metres / 196 feet high. If it's one of these that is proposed, it is considerably taller than the one that turned up last year.
Flogging Molly October 25th, 2007, 07:48 PM Same company that Birmingham had there's from. Very modern and looks great on the skyline and will look amazing on the waterfront.
Wish we still had ours in al honesty.

You can't really compare the London Eye with the rest tbh :|
bustcapl October 25th, 2007, 07:53 PM personally think williamson sq is a crap site ofr this... surely better sites exist.... gardens of St georges Hall for one gives a much better city perspective!

Agree and dont we have to turn off the water feature if it gets put in Williamson sq.

Whoever suggested having a cable car string across the River as better than an eye-wheel had it right in my view. Presumably from one of the new high rises. Ideally with a good view of the working docs to sustain interest.
New_To _This_City October 28th, 2007, 12:42 AM These big wheels may not be all their cranked up to be, however, the London Eye is absolutely amazing, not only does it look a million dollars it also provides unrivalled views of a spectacular city!!!
So Liverpool's no London??? But it still is impressive, plus on a clear day you could see Snowdonia and perhaps the Isle Of Man if the wheel was sufficiently large!!! I say whack one up for the Capital of Culture Year!!!

I think you may have hit the nail on the head there. I did wonder why they had logged a request for a wheel now, when by time it has gone through the planning process, the Christmas period will be all but over. It makes sense now. They know ten of thousands of extra visitors are due in Liverpool next year, and what better way to see the city than from one of their wheels?

Will this not be in competion to the balloon trip envisaged for Salthouse Dock or have I missed an onion and a spud in the pan of scouse?

We'll have the hot air balloon, the big wheel and the viewing area on top of the cathedral,st johns beacon and the new restaurant near the top of west tower, there'll be plenty of places to view Liverpool from above next year.

That`s true Paul, the more `Vista Vista Vista` we have the better I like it......
