Tmac June 6th, 2006, 12:12 AM This was written a few years ago when Bashundhara City was inaugarated.
Bashundhara City - A City Within a City
One of the basic pursuits of life is the search for entertainment. In Dhaka, where choices are limited, going to a shopping mall is an activity that gives a moderate amount of pleasure even though it may mean a substantial drain on the wallet. Bangladeshis rush to the plazas and the malls, looking for a respite from their daily mundane, hectic existence. But existing shopping centres offer little more than rows and rows of shops selling products from abroad. Some have food courts but this is hardly enough to satisfy people's thirst for enjoyment. Most of these 'modern plazas' lack the basic ingredients of a proper complex, be it for shopping or for entertainment. Apart from the flashy title of being the 'biggest mall' in South Asia, it is a complex that is sure to dazzle its visitors.
As Dolon, a student of Government Lab, walks into the mammoth hall and looks up at the dome skylight, he is speechless. Goosebumps begin to rise and he gulps as he takes in the majestic view of Bashundhara City's main hall. He and his friends are here for a little sneak-peak into the much-awaited city of promises, a city unlike any other, apparently the biggest shopping mall in South Asia. Located at the southern side of Panthapath, this colossal shopping mall has been built by Bashundhara Group on 17 <>bighas of land, spending an estimated staggering Tk 450 crore.
As he makes his way through the artificial plants and décor, he is amazed at the perfect ambience of natural and artificial light, playing together to brighten up the whole place. The floors too are well polished to reflect the light, glittering and shining all around him. That is not too surprising as the glass-made dome that covers the great hall is one of the biggest in Asia right now and is especially designed to allow more light and less heat. The interior and the exteriors are both made of reflecting steel, with potted plants at selective points to offer the best presentation. Artificial palm trees in the main hall give the whole complex an international look.
The designers behind this mega complex were Vistaara Architects, one of Dhaka's premier architecture firms, founded in 1994. They were assisted by Arun Chaiesri Consulting Engineers Co., Ltd. (ACS) of Thailand and Environmental Engineering Consultants Co., Ltd. (EEC) of Thailand. ACS and EEC provided the structural and electro-magnetic design of the gigantic structure. The building is wholly planned by Johnson Control of the USA and designated as a world-class intelligent building.
Colonel Mohd. Ahsanullah (Retd), the Executive Director of Bashundhara City, sounds fairly confident about the safety, security and comfort provided by Bashundhara City. "We have assessed all the likely threats that may occur in the general service market and have taken the necessary precautions," he says. On this criterion, there are two types of security: physical security as well as electronic security. Because security is vital, the authorities have hired about 200 security personnel, including 30 firemen. "The guards are going through a continuous training process and there are daily briefings and assessments from the previous day to pinpoint loopholes in the system and they are corrected to prevent repetition," continues Ahsanullah. Other than this, there will be civilian dressed guards to ensure that security is maintained, without causing panic among the patrons.
"We will also have female security guards in certain sections where most of our clientele are ladies," adds Ahsanullah.
About 100 Closed Circuit Televisions have been installed at different vantage points to watch out for trouble makers around the complex, including the different points of entry into the market, the substations and the chillers. There will be round-the-clock security monitors that will be recording the daily activities inside the complex. Apart from this, a squad of four guard dogs known as 'sniffing dogs' are being trained to sniff out explosives. Metal detectors will also be used to prevent illegal arms from entering into the premises. Since selection of suitable candidates for different posts is important, some army officers have been given the duty of personnel selection. These officers have a keen sense of selection as they have served in various intelligence services and have a good understanding of people. Three hundred cleaners will also be working around the clock to keep the environment clean and hygienic. They have also been given fire training and in case of a fire, they will also help to fight the flames.
Four diesel-powered generators will take charge of the electrical needs of the site in case of power surges. Bashundhara City is centrally air conditioned with a refrigeration capacity of 5750 tons from Level 1 through 8. There are also 5 Chillers, 5 Cooling Towers, 15 different pumps, 619 air handling units, 254 fan coil units and 14 exhaust and ventilation fans. Other than that about 61 escalators and 20 lifts, including four capsule elevators in the main hall underneath the giant dome, all brought in from Schindler, Switzerland will add to the comfort and convenience of the visitors to Bashundhara City.
Fire alarm panels have been set up all over the complex to detect fire emergencies. Alongside that, there are 8 fire alarm panels networked from all the levels to control the fire, should one ever break out. Fire hydrants line many walls all over the building complex.
There are extinguishers on every level for spot fires and about 7000 fire and smoke detectors and devices throughout the multiplex. Fire exit doors run from the basement levels to the 19th floor. Other than that, 30 firemen are supposed to always be present on the site to ensure fire safety.
There is car parking facility in the basement of the shopping mall for more than a thousand cars to be parked at the same time. Right in front of the multiplex is a wide roadway, parallel to Panthapath, to avoid traffic congestion on the main road. The underground parking has three entry and exit points. There is also space allotted for taxis and CNGs such that the customers do not have to venture far with their shopping bags in their hands. Also in the Underground section of the complex is a supermarket and a restaurant where the main attraction is Bangladeshi food.
The Main Attractions of Bashundhara City
Levels 1 to 7 of Bashundhara City comprise the shopping complex. Here, more than 2000 shops have been set up to cater to the hustle and bustle of the buyers. International brand goods along with local products will all be available. Add the abundance of boutiques and saree shops and you have the ambience of a bustling mall of Dhaka. If the prices are as competitive as it is in Eastern Plaza, Bashundhara City will surely be a place of good bargain and a shopper's paradise. The prices are also accompanied by a vibrating choice of brands and models in all product categories. Items to look forward to are readymade garments, electrical and electronic gadgets, cosmetics, books, perfume, art, antiques, kitchen appliances, crockery stores, drugs, jewellery, optical accessories, stationary, leather goods, sports equipment and goods and computers, among a swarm of others. Most of the shops are still not fully finished though many will start business as soon as the site is officially open to the public. The tower section of the complex will consist mainly of home appliances, kitchen items and sanitary ware.
Visitors can comfortably stroll through the lavish halls of the centrally air-conditioned complex where each storey is especially designed to cater to the specific needs of the patrons. All that glitters is probably gold in the rows of identical shops glittering with jewellery. In addition, as profusion of silver, precious stones and natural pearl shops will all be situated conveniently around the complex.
One will surely be lost in the shopping adventure and exotic environment set around the centre. With so much on offer, shopping in Bashundhara City will no doubt be a little exhausting because one has to do so much of walking to take everything in, but the experience of this huge complex should be worth it.
One of the major attractions of the City is the Gold's Gym. Originating in Venice, California in 1965, Gold's Gym has been in the business of serious workouts. It is here that many bodybuilders have found a haven to exercise and get that perfectly toned body. Gold's Gym is the largest international gym with 680 fitness centres all over the globe and 3.5 million members. Some of the facilities that they offer include cardio-vascular training, strength training, weight training, fitness assessments, nutrition centre, aerobics, spinning, swimming pool, steam, sauna, jacuzzi and personal lockers. The gyms are totally separate for the male and the female members. To avoid inconvenience, both have separate pool and spa on two different levels of the building.
Special punch-in cards allow the members to access the different facilities and also provides a record of the daily activities. These cards have different membership privileges. The members with the Gold card will also have the additional opportunity to use any Gold's Gym around the world for a duration of 14 days. All memberships are on a yearly basis.
More and more Features…
What's a mall without a food court? Bashundhara City has a space reserved for a hundred food outlets on Level 8. These will offer delicious cuisine from all over the world, all under the same roof. The food court will follow a token system and will have a seating capacity for more than 900 people to dine at the same time.
Perhaps the most exciting offering of Bashundhara City is the 3 Multi-screen Cinema Theatre on Level 8. Show Motion Ltd., a joint venture private company, has reached into this portion of the complex to bring in the latest international blockbusters. State-of-the-art equipment has been brought in to maximise the audio and visual entertainment of the movie lovers of the city. Each of the rooms will have seating arrangements for about 260 viewers with a lot of space left open to bring in a homely atmosphere.
But there is more for the youngsters at this complex. On Level 8, an indoor theme park --'Toggi World'-- has been set up with a miniature Eiffel Tower standing in the middle with the Statue of Liberty and Taj Mahal close by. The first indoor theme park of this calibre, Toggi World features Bumper Cars, a Mini Roller Coaster, Flying Carpet, Kiddy Swing, Merry-Go-Round and many more fun rides for the whole family to enjoy. There is also a section for the toddlers where they have specialised rides. The rides include a Pink Cadillac, a little train, a Piggy and many more. A party area has already been set aside to host special events for children.
For internet buffs is a cyber café housed with High Speed Internet Connectivity. This place is mainly for people to hang-out and have a drink or two while chatting with friends or while surfing on the net.
A large chunk of Level 8 has been set aside for video gamers with electrifying entertainment. The visitors will be logged into the virtual world of games with famous names like SEGA and NAMCO all from Japan.
For those who get their kicks from bringing down rolling pins, there is AMF, the world renowned bowling ally also on this level. All age groups will be allowed here. With music playing in the background and your scores on LCD monitors, this will surely be a fun place to chill out. There is even an ice-skating rink although the ice is artificial.

Hindustani June 30th, 2006, 02:47 PM  Dhaka is amazing. Beats some other Indian subcontinent's financial capitals by a mile. keep up the good images. I like the star cinema.
Amit July 1st, 2006, 11:35 PM Congratulations for such a magnificent Mall :) It is awesome by any standards.
I have a question regarding the cinema multiplex.. does it play only Hollywood movies, or does it play Indian movies as well? Are Indian movies popular in Bangladesh in general? I would imagine so because of language and cultural similarities.
mirzazeehan July 2nd, 2006, 12:08 AM The Star Cineplex at Bashundhara Mall usually plays Hollywood and Bengali movies. But during the time of Film Festival,it does play some Bollywood movies. And yes,Bollywood movies are very popular here in Bangladesh.

Tmac July 30th, 2006, 10:41 PM Bashundhara Shopping Mall: A gossip centre for teenagers
A group of college and secondary level students were intercepted on the first floor of Bashundhara Shopping Mall on Sunday noon to know the reason of their wandering about. One of them became startled for a moment and said, “We have come from Sylhet to have a glimpse of this mall as we had heard that it was very beautiful and big one. Shopping is not our prime objective. We are really charmed by the outer and the inner beauty of this shopping complex.”
Bashundhara Shopping Mall was opened to customers in October last. There are about 2350 shops of different kinds from first floor to eighth floor. Two basements are reserved for car parking numbering 1000. Parking charge is sustainable. The complex opens at 0930 hours and closes at 2200 hours. There are heavy rushes on Thursdays and Fridays while normal situation on all other days. There is a spring on the front side adding extra beauty.
Four students from Dhanmandi area were sitting round a table in front of a café on eighth floor. When it was said to them, “Are you students. If yes, are your classes are over and what did lead you here instead of returning to the respective residences?” One of them said, “Classes being over, we have come here for relaxation. Can you show me a place where there is safety and security of life and belongings? But you have that security here.
Many students like them were found gossiping among themselves in separate groups round the table on the same floor. When a girl student was requested to state the reason of her presence there when the sun had just begun to drop in the west, she said, “All of us in this group of four are students of Eden Girls University College. As for me, I come from Mirpur everyday, I use to visit this complex now and then just for innocent pleasure.” One of her friends said, “This is the first time that I am here. Environment at this shopping complex is perhaps better than at any part of the city.”
But contrary to the claim, high music was going on, creating serious disturbance to every person on the floor. The sound of the music went even beyond that. When the attention of the girl was drawn, a varsity student, sitting just few yard away, defended the music and said, “The teenagers have no problem at this. You may not like.”
Four other male students who claimed to be the students of a private university said, “We have come here to discuss among ourselves on the topic our teacher gave lecture in the class.” When it was said, how was it possible to discuss when there is high music all around, they said, “Music cannot pose threat to our ponder.” A child accompanied by her mother was seen taking coffee at a little distance.
Though the number of shops is over two thousands, about 35 percent reportedly remained closed. On enquiry it revealed that unsatisfactory transaction forced the shop owners to keep the doors shut. A shopkeeper said, “The number of visitors being more than customers, our sale position have not yet reached the mark.” A salesman of an electronics shop said, “Prices of the electronic items at our shop are as usual. You will find same rate in other shopping malls of the city. The sale position is not yet upto expectation.”
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v128/Tarik/Tarik2/Tarik3/Tarik4/bashundharacity80.jpg
A salesman of a readymade garments shop claimed that prices of the garments at his shop were in some cases lower than that in other shopping complex. “We take care of the customers’ financial condition and pressed hard to buy from ours,” said he. BEXIMCO Group has a readymade garment shop on the first floor. “The reason of unsatisfactory sale position is that Basundhara Shopping Mall has been more a recreation centre than a shopping complex. As the security arrangement is excellent and as the city dwellers can take rest on the eighth floor fearlessly, a large number of them come here everyday for that purpose only. However, we hope that the transaction will reach its climax soon,” said an employee of BEXIMCO.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v193/Bangladesh/bangladesh1/Bangladesh2/bashundharacity95.jpg
About the number of the security men working round the clock, the Duty Officer expressed his ignorance. He, however, said that the security men were giving duty both in uniform and in plain cloths. No Executive of Basundhara City Development Limited, could be talked for detailed information.
Two women U-30 moved away quickly as soon as they were requested for interview. They instead showed their exasperating. A garment shop, AB Fashion, informed that they used to sell at cheaper rate comparatively. Yet, the number of customers is not encouraging, rather disappointing. But why?
It reveals from discussion with concerned persons that transport problem is one of the causes of lesser number of women customers. Members of middle-income group use rickshaws, which have no access to Panthopath. Moreover, it is one-way traffic. As a result, middle-income group women cannot come much they wish.
There are three cinema halls on the eighth floor. Minimum rate of ticket is taka 85 and maximum taka 125. Those who are salesmen, shop owners and members of Basundhara Group enjoy 30 percent concession. Inside decoration, sound system and screen and projection machine are of class one quality, as learnt.

Tmac September 6th, 2006, 11:37 AM Fun and food together at the Bashundhara Food Court
Bashundhara city is the country’s largest shopping mall. it is also the largest mall in this region. A wide array of shops adorns the eight floor structure. The top most floors hold the prime attraction : A Cineplex coupled with a food court. The movie outlet is also the first of its kind in many aspects. It is the first widescreen movie hall that is a Cineplex. It is also first one where one can get to see very recent international movies, along with the local reel works. The food court that encompasses the movie halls is one of the main attractions for the visitors who come here for shopping. The Food Court consists of around hundred food joints. The foods range from fast food to local delicacies like Tehari and Chatpati and Phuchka. Apart from the Cineplex, the entire eighth floor of the mall is dotted with small cubicles serving endless varieties of popular food items. There are chicken fries, sandwiches, burgers and French fries. Popular outlets like Coopers and Hello Fried Chicken are top favourites in this regard.
http://www.bangladeshmonitor.net/archives/images/sep01-06/images/35.jpg
Indian foods like Raj Kachori, Chola Batura and Dahi Phuchka are very popular amongst the local food lovers. There are a quite a few counters at the Bashundhara Food Court, which serve these mouth watering items, and of course Dosas. The best parts of this meal are very light yet very filling and a treat for the taste buds.
Ice cream, the most popular global item is available here in many tastes and flavours. Famous brands like Baskin Robbins has an outlet along with the other local brands.
The Food Court opens at 10:30 in the morning and is open until 10:30 at night, except for Wednesday - the weekly holiday for the mall. On any given weekday streams of people flow down either from the elevator or the escalator to the most popular part of the shopping mall.
The interior of the mall has a cylindrical structure that allows everyone to glimpse downstairs or the upstairs. This unique architectural feature allows the viewer to see what is happening at Level even one is standing at level 8. So while browsing through the shops or glancing at the eye-catching displays one can glide through the elevator or escalator and step into Level 8.
In between movies one can munch popcorns and gulp down a glass of soft drink. After a treat at the Cineplex, the Food Court is a temptation very hard to resist. The awesome varieties of foods make it quite difficult to choose. Thai, Indian and local cuisine have a tough competition in their counterpart names fast food.
Soft drinks, juices, cold coffee and tea all kind of popular beverages are found in one outlet of other. The pressure at the Food Court starts around mid-day but the catering needs for the vast stream of visitors starts from 10:30 in the morning. The rush goes on till after sunset and finally it stands still at 10:30 at night. One section of the Food Court gets busy serving sizzling chicken fries and French fries while the aroma of freshly cooked Tehari fills another corner. There are icecreams galore in a number of outlets while cold coffee and fresh juice reigns in a number of other food stores.
In one table diners may be seen gorging on Dai Phuchka and Raj Kachuri while on the next table may be filled with jokes, laughter, popcorns and Pepsi!! It is a wonderful place where people continue pouring in just for the fun of food! It is indeed quite difficult to find another match like this in the city where so many varieties and flavours are served under one roof.
Whether it is movie or window shopping or a shopping spree – Bashundhara City’s Food Court is the place where one should be! It is so full of life with people of all class, creed and colour and so very vibrant with the tempting flavours and exotic array of food all in the same premises.

Thats nothing new. And not only Basundhara city either, Govt ordered to close all shops (except cinema, resturants, Pharmacies etc..) by 6pm for power shortage quite a few months back when summer started, then extended up to 8pm a couple of months ago. Now its 10pm for upcoming Eid.

Personally I dont think Sylhet has demand enough for such a big shopping complex but there is so much money in Sylhet hand due to vast business in UK (90% of Bangladeshis in the UK are from Sylhet) some people just dont know what to do with the money and invest it in all the wrong projects... stupid really.

One City is an awesome project, something we can be proud of.I hope it will be as successful as the other big malls in the country.Btw..any idea how big the mall will be...I hope its much bigger than Bashundhara City which is 1.2million sq feet. You will be delighted to know that Jamuna Future Park Shopping Mall is also nearing completion and will be as big as 4.2 million sq. feet.

Mega mall businessmen in fire trauma
Staff Correspondent
http://www.picamatic.com/show/2009/03/13/11/21/2803123_944x534.JPG
The fire broke out at the top of the 21-storey shopping mall in the afternoon and it took fire-fighters hours to douse the flames, but the businesses were in dark about how much the devastating fire cost them.
Many shop owners were not even in a position to make any comment on their fate as they were traumatised by the raging blazes. Some of them however told newsmen that they were not allowed to salvage their merchandise for security and safety reasons.
Owner of the Roast and Grill, Safi Ahmed, housed on the level 8 told New Age, ‘My manager informed me about the fire, I rushed to the scene, but the authority closed all the entrances and I failed to rescue my belongings.’
Rabeya Begum, who desperately looking for his son-in-law told New Age, ‘My son-in-law established a shop by investing all of his savings. Now who knows how he will restart his business!’.
The Basundhara City, opened in August 2004, is claimed to be the largest shopping mall in South Asia and the 12th largest in the world.
Around 2,000 retail stores and food courts are on the first eight floors of the mall. The upper floors house a multiplex movie theatre, a gymnasium, and offices including the corporate headquarters of the Bashundhara Group.

TIslam March 14th, 2009, 05:21 AM ^^ Thank God its was a Friday and not many people were hurt.
Perhaps it is Friday that could be blamed for the disaster? I heard on Channel-i, someone say that they couldn't get to their "state of the art" fire control equipment because that area was closed today, being Friday. You kidding me?! Why isn't (wasn't) fire control equipment available 24x7?
More and perhaps bigger disasters are awaiting Dhaka with preponderance of high rise buildings, if fire detection/prevention, fire suppression/control and monitoring isn't taken seriously and dealt with professionally.
meghnarmajhi March 14th, 2009, 08:34 AM heartbreaking............
even 7 deaths is too many.... still we should be thankful that it's not as bad as it could be. About time we realize the importance of having good security and safety systems in all installations. also, we need emergency evacuation drills on regular basis. recent incidence has proved that NSI should stop sleeping so much under the influence of "naake shorshe tel".

Pakia March 14th, 2009, 12:54 PM Heartbreaking, but thankfully the lost of lives is minimum. May they rest in peace.
The silver lining to this fire is that all the problems should be fixed in this mall when it reopens. Also the future projects of such magnitude would be more scrutinized, so that such inceidents don't happen again.
Yeah it'd be a bit surprising for the world media to see such giant modern mall in Bangladesh and hopefully the world would step forward to lend a helping hand.

All good, though BBC usually gives due time to South Asian events, as probably Al Jazeera does, but CNN in America generally does not (except as may relate to the "War on Terror". You guys in BD don't know how incredibly bad news coverage in the US is (too little information, biased information, news with primary goal of sensationalism, etc)...it is no surprise that most Americans...including the educated ones...if either poor or misinformed ideas of world affairs). So I was pleasantly surprised to see the coverage.

dopekhor March 15th, 2009, 11:21 AM apparently bbc has a beam for south asia unlike cnn, and cnn after opening up an indian arm (cnn ibn) has completely turned into an indian ass licker

for bangladesh improve its image aborad they need to open up a news channel or buy air time on big networks in the west and show programs that promote bd

Create irrational exuberance/hype about BD, it seems like that what every other country does, especially before the credit crisis.

 Not a bad idea but seriously, nobody in Bangladesh appears to be worried enough and do something about it (the image problem). Don't you think Bangladesh (businesses as well as the government) should actively promote its "brand" particularly when there are certain quarters actively promoting its image down and in faqce of the western media's bias for the negative?

Indus March 17th, 2009, 03:29 AM Here's some info and a collection of photos of the Bashundhara City.
Bashundhara City is a 21 storied business centre and a shopping mall in Bangladesh. The complex has a mall, several multiplex movie theaters, a theme park, and business offices. Bashundhara city is the largest shopping mall in South Asia. The mall has space for 2500 retail stores and restaurants and also possesses a large gym (Gold's Gym) and top floor food court along with an indoor theme park. The Bashundhara City building also has rooftops garden and is a brilliant symbol of the emerging city of Dhaka.

Were'nt these people implicated in bribery & murder??

Who's weeping? And what's wrong about appreciating a nice buidling and regretting its damage, regardless who owns it? Appreciation of architecture is the entire point of this forum. This does not mean we are not sorry for those who died.

Bashundhara mall is widely seen as a symbol of Bangladesh's rising economy, and is also something that most,if not all Bangladeshis are proud of.So it really didn't come as a surprise to me when I saw several people weeping on television at the sight of the mall burning.
Get Smart March 19th, 2009, 10:06 PM this is a great looking mall inside and out, very impressed. When i saw the pictures of the food court, it was blatantly obvious that it can rival the food court of any British malls. never knew about this great looking building until last saturday when i saw an article of the fire in the sun tabloid :bash:
i have one question, where do people park their cars when they come shopping, is there any underground car park, any pictures please?

There is actually a two level basement in Bashundhara Mall, and it can accommodate up to 1500 cars at a time.Thats however just a fraction of the "5000" cars the new biggest mall[four times bigger] in Dhaka/South Asia will be able to accommodate once it opens next year. For details, check out the "Jamuna Future Park" thread.:)

The Seventh floor has been opened to the public with six new megastores:Bata,Ecstasy,Westecs,Infinity,Apex and Deshi Dosh.
Unlike normal stores, these stores are huge, possibly over 20,000 sq feet each.

Some things are only possble in a Bangladeshi Mall...due to Ramzan, the mall was over crowded and people were sitting down on the floor and breaking their fast--why?Ofcourse cause there was not a single empty seat in the food court:lol:

tanzirian September 18th, 2009, 12:51 AM Thanks for the pics, Mirza. Any update on exterior repairs?
sas September 18th, 2009, 01:33 AM I went shopping in Bashundhara City yesterday, and took lots of shots.
The Seventh floor has been opened to the public with six new megastores:Bata,Ecstasy,Westecs,Infinity,Apex and Deshi Dosh.
Unlike normal stores, these stores are huge, possibly over 20,000 sq feet each.
Alot of shoppers had been awaiting the introduction of "megastores" culture in Dhaka for a long time,well..they got what they wanted now:cheers:
Brilliant photos Mirza. Was just talking about this in my last post in the JFP thread and how encouraging it is to see such stores develop in Bangladesh. However late you feel these stores have come up, I still think this is definitely a start. Even though it's sad that because of such a late addition, these have to so inconveniently be located on the 7th floor and that 95% of the stores in the other floors don't have any meaningful content/planning. The 7th floor had been left empty (that was the original plan) and they'd always stage melas and exhibitions there.
I particularly like the way Deshi Dosh has been decorated. It's so nice and different. It's funny how small (in terms of area, i.e. square footage) each floor at Bashundhara City actually is. The 7th floor was originally vacant most of the time and now we have around seven 10,000-12,000 sq. ft. stores and the whole floor is taken up!
dopekhor September 18th, 2009, 05:01 AM nice to see the mall in mall concept pick up, soon u'll find that big stores are buying up several small stores to to open a big store
amar11372 September 18th, 2009, 09:28 AM ^^ Yeah, these department store are looking much nicer, but why are the mall packed with guys? I thought women do most of the shopping.

Yeah...and since such stores are now present in Bashundhara...I am certain that Jamuna will have even more of these and in larger scale:cheers:

I have the same question. Back when there were no malls, most of the shopping centers like New Market, Gausia, etc., used to be packed with women. What, Bangladesh women don't like malls?

I have no idea about jewelers dude. But for men's apparel, would strongly recommend YELLOW. It's right next to the bubble/capsule elevators on the ground floor. Very good stuff. You might also check out the larger anchor stores for more clothes and shoes on the 7th floor.

They would -- only if the local nerdy 'bachelors' weren't hanging out at the malls gawking at girls. These guys should find some other 'hobbies' other than hanging out at malls. I'm surprised this continues to be a 'culture' of sorts after twenty/thirty some odd years. Maybe some floors (jewelry, sarees) should be declared 'girls only' or 'family only' floors.
Equinox2 October 18th, 2009, 02:36 PM ^It's nice to see people are actually queing up to buy stuff (I guess the shots were taking around Eid time?) instead of just loitering around, which is what most people do in Bashundhara.
mintgum84 August 18th, 2011, 06:30 AM I'm of Pakistani stock and must say this Bashundhara city looks awesome! I had 2 good Bangali friends in school [both from Sylet] who never mentioned this development to me! Does it have a Game Store and a PC world?

Ah-ha this brings back memories of shopping at the unbelievably crowded aisles of Mustafa in Singapore in the late 80's and early 90's during transit stops in that city! Mustafa had by far the lowest prices in S'pore in those days (probably still does) and I have bought many an 'Asian market' / 'Japanese domestic market' exotic cameras and electronics items from them (stuff you can't really get in the US). BTW the building looked a lot shabbier then and was a two story affair. Bangladeshi expat construction laborers used to hang out outside Mustafa on weekends.
If they're opening Mustafa in Dhaka -- it is a smart move on their part because they have realized after twenty some years that Bangladeshis are their best customers :)
