There's a city we don't get to see much of on here.
Good pics. Not a lot of buildings or density, but the height is fairly good.
I give it a nice 8.5

Pros: Nice height... exceptional architecture!

Cons: Not enough buildings, too many gaps.

Overall: 7.5/10

For just a medium sized city, it has a big suk'n trophy tower...and bloody good look'n to boot.

Don't know how I'd "rate" it just for that, but it impresses you anyway.

Very nice. It's beautifully balanced, with a variety of styles to keep you interested. It's non boxy which is good. Too bad it's not enhanced by a riverfront or mountains. I haven't seen the skyline in person at night for a while now. I need to go back soon before I go mad. It's variety of height differences as well, with a definate focal point. Not too spread out at all. It's achieveing that Emerald City feel. I give it an 8.5.

I like the skyline alot and the biggest tower is awsome! But for some f**ken reason, the 2nd largest tower next to the BOA is getting on my nerves. It slightly slants on one side as nears the ground.

Why does it do that?!?! :bleep: Its really eating at my brain!
Just for that.....7.5. :D

Off the top of my head I can think of buildings in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, Dallas, Seattle, and Cleveland all have at least one building taller than Charlotte's BofA.

Style, I'd imagine the difference in square feet would be due just to that strip of glass at the corners, since it grows as the building's height increases.

That pic was taken from the new parking deck on fairview by the South Park Mall.

BOA and Hearst are extremely awesome... but there's not much else there... not my type of skyline or downtown... very spaced out... no old buildings (probably because Charlotte metro was only 197,000 in 1950)... to many gaps... low density... but for being such a tiny nothingtown... to this big city today... I guess it's pretty good

I don't see what's so confusing for you...but it's funny you think someone would go through the trouble to enhance that pic. to give any sort of illusion...

As for Charlotte's skyline...I was lucky enough to see it myself...and it is amazing. I love the fact that the stadium is also in the downtown area.

...Charlotte's "downtown" is concentrated in a walkable area that houses (now) nearly 10,000 people, a couple of full service grocery stores (even a "Dean and Deluca"); and soon, a Johnson and Wales University campus (complete with "chocolate institute"), museums, parks, electric trolley, major league stadium and (soon) arena.

Oh, i figured out why I wasn't getting it. The buildings, contrary to what I was thinking, are on opposite sides of the street. Thats why they look so close, but really, as Peter the Great mentioned, Hearst is much shorter than it looks in the pic, which means its closer. So they are really close (only separated by the width of the street), but if shot looking up that street, they seem much further apart.

I guess it all comes down to the fact that I thought Hearst was taller.

I saw this poll and thought about how Bank of America bought that bank in Boston. I didn't know what to expect. I'm impressed. I had no idea charlotte had grown up so much.

I have a colleague who travels there for business and she says that downtown is very vibrant with lots of new places to live and eat and people on the streets all day and night. Maybe my husband and I will visit too!

Nice pictures too

BOA and Hearst greatly improve this skyline. The downside is that it reminds me of the Texas skylines that have virtually no classic architecture. Too much glass and steel. Still one of the best in the South.

That is Bank of America's new Trading Floor. Huge trading floor at that. Their current one located in Bank of America Corporate Center is wired to take over for the NYSE if it can not do its job. I assume that would be the case for this new one too.

I agree with VT, but say in the top 10. In any case, it won't take 20 years. There are already several buildings under construction or breaking ground in 2004 that will broaden the width of the otherwise centrally-focused ridge of skyscrapers...see "The South" forum for images of these new buildings in the "Charlotte Construction" thread.

The weird thing about Charlotte is that even in the last 5 years things have changed noticeably. It's finally bumped up to a higher level of urbanism, which is making the downtown in particular a more interesting place to be. It's no New Orleans, but it's definitely making headway in terms of culture and nightlife. I don't blame anyone who visited in the past for feeling like the city lacked a heart, but I would invite them to come again and see some of the fruits of that "sterile" phase when construction was the primary downtown activity. Things are especially going to pick up once the downtown arena and its adjacent development is completed in a year or so.

7/10. A very interesting skyline. It is glassy and elegant. I like the two tall post-modern buildings a lot, particularly the one that grows slimmers as it approaches the ground. Also, the height is impressive. But I think that there aren't enough buildings yet and there are some gaps that need to be filled in. This skyline nevertheless has serious potential to grow and get better.

I like Charlottes skyline alot. Whats amazing is there was no skyline 15 years ago!! So the one guy who said..imagine the skyline 20 years from now is so right! There are alot of scrapers getting ready to be built. Charlotte could never be a NYC or Chicago, everybody knows that. Could it beat out Atlanta one day? Maybe not beat it out but skyscraper wise It will come close I think. For such a young downtown center I give Charlotte a 9.5/10. I look foward to watching her grow in the future!

Several of the city's tallest, including Hearst and BoA, were built by Bank of America. You're right about them complimenting each other, it's almost like a tailored suit for the city.

BOA and Hurst are gorgeous buildings and the whole skyline blends very well...BUT, Charlotte really lacks mid-rise buildings. But, their skyline is changing daily and in about 5 years, it will look vastly different than it does today. I really think that it will resemble Atlanta (on a smaller scale) within the next 10 years...with shiney towers speard-out along a corridor.

Charlotte metropolitan area is ~1,350,000 people (U.S. Bureau of Census)and the skyline resembles its size very well. Two more building similar to BoA and it will be perfect.

8/10 The nice things about Charlotte's skyline are that it is not just along one street, as it has greater depth. It's also got a fairly decent population living in the CBD.

For a city the size of Charlotte, it's quite an amazing downtown.

I never know how to vote on these threads. If we are supposed to compare Charlotte to all the other skylines of the world, obviously it doesn't come close to NY, Chicago, HK etc... Then it gets maybe a 7 from me.

But, maybe we should consider cities to be in different classes, as in boxing. Charlotte can't be expected to compete against NY, Chicago, or even Atlanta. It's much smaller. For a city it's size, it's skyline is fantastic. NC cities in general have great skylines for their size (Winston-Salem and Asheville especially), but Charlotte's is much more futuristic than those older skylines. For a city of it's size, it has perhaps the best, most forward-looking skyline in the US, and I expect even greater things from this city.

Charlotte can't be expected to compete against even Atlanta

don't mention that on the southeast forum... :runaway:

i agree though, of U.S. cities with the 1-3 million metro populations it's got a great skyline, especially b/c it is so futuristic.

When I judge a skyline I put it in perspective. For example, my favorite American skyline is Chicago. It is the most architecturally appealing and balanced IMO. New York makes top 3 based on bulk alone, but really the fact that it's gigantic doesn't make it the instant #1 in my mind. Other skylines that aren't necessarily the largest, but have a great look include Seattle's, Minneapolis', Philadelphia's, and Pittsburgh's. I'd put all of these cities' skylines ahead of charlotte not just because of size but for their overall appeal. Now take a city like Atlanta. Atlanta has some gaps that need to be addressed, which keeps it from being a truly great skyline. it's almost there though. Almost.

Charlotte doesn't have gaps like Atlanta but it is lacking the midrise density of these other cities. There are many projects in the works that will improve this (some of which are already done but these pics are too obsolete to show), but for now that has to be taken into consideration when grading Charlotte's skyline.

dcb11
November 10th, 2005, 07:48 AM
don't mention that on the southeast forum... :runaway:

Comparing Charlotte and Atlanta is taboo, huh? Well, I live in the Southeast, and outside of both Charlotte and Atlanta, so I thought I wasn't so biased. Does this mean I can't use the term "Charlanta" either? :)

I guess when I think of "skyline" I'm generally thinking of a collection of skyscrapers, rather than a view of them. Some cities have well-balanced skylines, but lack any masterpieces. Charlotte has at least one masterpiece, but it's not a balanced skyline compared to many others, but rather a collection of scrapers.

Balance:

Now see I don't consider that pic you posted to be balanced. It's lopsided to the right. I believe that's Columbus, and I KNOW Columbus has a better overall skyline than that pic reflects. Find a better one that shows off its linear balance better.

A large number of these lots are set to be filled with towers (there are already projects set to go over them). I kind of think the surface lots are good for now. It leaves plenty of room for growth. :)

I agree, there are some fantastic new towers and good ones on the way, but if you go to Emporis and look at the list of buildings, there is a HUGE drop in height once you get out of the top 20-30. A real lack of 15-20 story buildings. I have been so jealous of all of the residential towers and structures going up, but now I realize why...there werent any to begin with. At least for a City Charlotte's size.

Not a diss on Charlotte, just an observation. The City is really charging ahead though!

Holy crap! When did Charlotte grow up? If you haven't seen it in person...it was a big surprise for this first timer. Charlotte is in the shadow of DC and Atlanta but being in the city for only a couple of days makes me wonder - how long until the word gets out about this surprisingly sophisticated city with a dramatic and rapidly growing skyline? I especially loved the view of downtown from the "4th ward" (?) park. Skyscrapers, at close range, emerging from a park with mature trees, extensive and beautiful landscaping, children playing, older people, blacks, whites, browns, gays in the shadow of towers...amazing city.

8/10 now, but 10/10 in 5 years.

Most of the parking lots in the above aerial will be gone over the next 5-10 years with the addition of a park and minor league baseball stadium in Third Ward, mixed-use village in First Ward and numerous high-rise projects either under construction or in the works. Keep an eye on the CLT!

that's why i love it...it looks like the evil government city from a B-sci-fi movie, all shiny and new and stylish and ego driven over the surroundings. with all of the banks there, that's not too far from the truth. ;) i love the skyline, i wish they'd kept more of the old/historic buildings intact when building it, and the infill seems great.

i think a lot of forumers just have a raging hard on for generic asian commie blocks surrounding a tall tower or two. :ohno:

And yet, if this were the city of Carlotta in the Mexican state of Carolina del Norte, instead of Charlotte, North Carolina, you'd have given the skyline a 12. You're just trying to bring down scores. You lost your credibility when you gave a low rating to the New York skyline.

Could use with a few gap-fillers, but the height is good. BofA really makes it beautiful.

Wow, I'm more than impressed by the skyline of Charlotte. Definitely one of the best on the east coast after New York, Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Miami. What's impressive is the city is not as big as the aforementioned, and the buildings themselves are very beautiful. Such a beautiful city as well. 8.5/10

well based on city limits charlotte is a much bigger city then miami! but its true, charlotte is a corporate giant! many of the big banks call charlotte home, especially for their regional operations! as so it is able to gain the skyscrapers it has, also duke energy is headquartered here, which pumps more into the city

It's okay ... pretty good actually ... but obviously it's not NY, Chicago, Miami, San Fran, Seattle, Houston, Atlanta ... and Philly's skyline is a little bit more impressive.

^^ To add too that list,I'd put Boston,Dallas,LA,Denver,Minneapolis,Pittsburgh all ahead of Charlotte also! That's just my opinion, but Charlotte's skyline has come so far in the last 10-20 years, just wait another 10-20 yr's!

Well, I did only say east coast, but out of the ones you mentioned, I can't say Boston has that good of a skyline as compared to Charlotte though

^^My bad,I should have read your post more clearly!but in my opinion Boston does have a better skyline,it's way more dense, but Charlotte does trump it in The height category!so I'd call it a wash!but for Charlotte's skyline even to compete with these much bigger metro's is amazing! No doubt Charlottes skyline is ONE of The best in The country!

The additions to the skyline in just 10 to 20 years have been amazing for a city in that size catagory. If it wasn't for the terrible economic woes over the last 2 years or so, this city would have an even better skyline because there were some very nice proposals in the works that never got built. But then again, that could be said about other cities to to one degree or another.

Charlotte in the clouds

Charlotte in the clouds...

I woke up to this view early Saturday morning. Very surreal! Unfortunetly I waited a little too long because the fog/clouds were dissipating, it was much thicker not 20min earlier. But...I was pressed for time, so I got ready quick, skipped breakfast, and snapped these off before heading out.
