And the GDP per capita of $70,000 is unbelievable!!!
Singidunum October 8th, 2005, 12:57 AM beautiful! Are they yours?
Mekky II October 8th, 2005, 12:57 AM http://www.eubusiness.com/Living_in_EU/050927182944.jyv7x0b9/view?searchterm=housing%20price
Luxembourg, not London, has Europe's priciest property
" Luxembourg has the most expensive real estate market of any European capital with an average purchase price of 470,000 euros (564,000 dollars) according to a survey out Tuesday by property firm Era Immobilier."
Kampflamm October 8th, 2005, 01:00 AM beautiful! Are they yours?
Yes, freshly made today. :D
Singidunum October 8th, 2005, 01:14 AM Congrats then! It's so clean. I don`t know how do gypsies from Serbia get used to the fact they are not supposed to throw garbage around. Or maybe they didn`t get used to it so that was the reason for Luxembourg to throw couple of hundreds of them back in Serbia.
Arpels October 8th, 2005, 01:53 AM beautiful city
scorpion October 8th, 2005, 03:06 AM where's Skype located???

great pics, looks a little *yawn* boring though...
TO_Joe October 8th, 2005, 03:07 AM Great pics.
But from the shots city looks empty -- just timing? Luxembourgish is so weird -- 1/2 German, 1/2 Dutch-like, and a few French-like expressions.
bnmaddict October 8th, 2005, 03:15 AM Great pics! Thanks for sharing them, Kampflamm. :)
juan_en_el_valle October 8th, 2005, 03:27 AM Cool pix!

Menino de Sampa October 8th, 2005, 08:53 PM Beautiful, but it doesn't exert a strong attraction over me! :)

Luxumburg looks great, I love the streets and the Grand Dukes Palace, very nice.
There is only one thing missing, why no picture of the elusive Kampflamm.
They seek him here, they seek him there that damned elusive Kampflamm gets everywhere ;)
Matthieu October 8th, 2005, 11:57 PM Nice city, I took a lot of picture too since my last picture threads (Prague & Budapest)...
I was too lazy to upload them, so another time. And I'm on my laptop, and won't get to my desktop at least until wednesday.

Lee October 9th, 2005, 08:19 PM What are you talking about?? It's de richest country in the world!
So rich that it actually has no influence. Seriously, though, this whole "richest in the world" thing is pretty lame, given that there are several US states (and regions in other countries I would think) with more people and a greater GDP per capita. DC, which has about the same people, has more than double Luxembourg's GDP per capita.
Anyway, it's a very beautiful place :)

Well very likely true but I'm sure that most of the US states which are significantly poorer than Luxembourg (think Southern states like Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana and even Tennesse and Georgia, plus a whole bunch of Mid-western states) bring the nation's number down. So when you look at it at the national level, you will just have to take that painful blow Lee...I know it's very painful.
And yes, Luxembourg has very little influence, but nobody here was claiming that...why go there? Simply many wealthy people call Luxembourg home, just like many call Monaco and Switzerland home, too.
chrishung October 10th, 2005, 04:12 AM Man they sure don't look like the capital of the wealthiest country to me with all those classic buildings lying around and no corporate looking structure visible but it sure is beautiful.
xzmattzx October 10th, 2005, 04:13 AM what a beautiful place. the pictures almost look like they could be from 100 or 200 years ago. all those pictures are postcard quality.
scorpion October 10th, 2005, 07:26 AM more! MORE!!! :D

What with you people who keeps calling european cities boring. You know what is boring, it is not the city it is the people that is boring. This city is an eye candy, how the hell can it be boring?
ejd03 October 11th, 2005, 05:48 AM Hey poster, are you Luxembourgian??
Æsahættr October 11th, 2005, 05:58 AM It looks so boring. No nightlife. (or it seems like it from pics) Probably full of old, stodgy retirees.

Compared to other European cities, Luxemburg is very boring. That's a fact. But is has only 90 000 people so it's a bit normal.
Kampflamm October 11th, 2005, 03:25 PM It looks so boring. No nightlife. (or it seems like it from pics) Probably full of old, stodgy retirees.
I'm sure there are plenty of bars and clubs near the train station (that area looked a bit more "big cityesque", I'll post pics of that later on). But let's not forget that this is a fairly small city so you won't be spoilt for choice.
mic of Orion October 11th, 2005, 09:15 PM very nice

Nouvellecosse October 14th, 2005, 02:13 AM It's PERFECT! The trees, the architecture, the setting...it's like a fairy tale come to life. No wonder the weathy choose to live there. It's way better than a boring, non-descript NA suburb. I could live there for sure.

Letzburgish probably :dunno:
Kampflamm October 14th, 2005, 12:10 PM Yeah it's Luxembourgish (Lëtzebuergesch). It's pretty much a German dialect with some French words here and there.
eastman October 14th, 2005, 12:29 PM the whole country looks like a big museum and i dont like museums...but it is a matter of fact that life quality is incredible ..

Mr Sky October 17th, 2005, 04:34 PM Yeah it's Luxembourgish (Lëtzebuergesch). It's pretty much a German dialect with some French words here and there.
Don't forget the dutch words ;), in fact there are many dutch words in their language because of the dutch/french/german occupation(trust me i've been there;)).
Taha October 17th, 2005, 09:28 PM You did a good job Kampflamm. Luxemburg look's really clean and tidy city.
buzaza October 17th, 2005, 09:42 PM awesome pics!!! :)
Alfa October 17th, 2005, 10:15 PM official language is french !
There are 3 official languages in Luxembourg. German, French and Luxemburgian (only since 1984). The goverment mostly use french but the people on the street prefer German and Luxembourgian.
Petronius October 17th, 2005, 10:26 PM why is luxembourg so rich by the way? :? what are its major exports, and which activity contributes the most to the country's economy?? :?

CU_rak October 23rd, 2005, 09:31 PM Surreal.... exactly what I felt seeing these very old buildings kept meticulously clean and repaired, with not many people or automobiles around. Seems a little uncomfortable to those of us used to busy street scenes and city life, but beautiful place nonetheless!
LuckyLuke October 23rd, 2005, 09:41 PM why is luxembourg so rich by the way? :? what are its major exports, and which activity contributes the most to the country's economy?? :?
The right question would be: What kind of imports does Luxembourg have? ;)
Very rich german and french people is the answer!
colin October 24th, 2005, 01:20 AM The right question would be: What kind of imports does Luxembourg have? ;)

friedemann February 3rd, 2008, 09:05 PM The city looks clean and nice, but never as rich, as the capital of the richest country of the world would supposed to be.
Where are the villas and the Ferraris?
brunob February 3rd, 2008, 09:13 PM It's about old fashioned good taste. If that's how they like it, i don't see why not.

xote February 5th, 2008, 12:31 AM These pictures show IMO a nice blend of Hausmann arquitecture with some color. One of my big complaints about northern Francophone cities is that they are urbanistically gorgeous but too grey and drab with the off-white stone and the shale roofs.
Audiomuse February 5th, 2008, 12:45 AM My goodness, this is a fairy tale town!
xote February 5th, 2008, 12:50 AM My goodness, this is a fairy tale town!

Canadian Chocho February 5th, 2008, 02:31 PM What is Luxembourgian? Is Germanic, Romance or...none?
Kampflamm February 5th, 2008, 03:30 PM It's more or less a Germanic dialect. A German speaker like me can understand it w/o a problem (even when spoken...written Luxembourgish is even easier to understand).
Jonesy55 February 5th, 2008, 03:50 PM Why do they drive cheap cars if they're so rich?
Only nouveaux riches who have come from poorer backgrounds are into bling and showing off their wealth to say "look at me, look how rich I am"
If your family and friends have always been wealthy and most people in the community around you are fairly wealthy, there is no reason to show off. You can still live a very affluent comfortable life without making it obvious to everybody.
Personally I prefer this style of understated wealth to Las Vegas/Dubai blingfests.
Kame February 5th, 2008, 06:29 PM Denk nach..."think about it"

More or less what Kampflamm said. I would add though that there is lively debate over the dialect vs. language status. I would say that Luxembourgois is as separate a "language" from Standard German as Norwegian or Swedish are separate languages from Danish.

Exactly  I actually would add that Europe (generalizing here) never gets too ostentatious even in the wealthiest places.
VelesHomais February 9th, 2008, 11:18 PM Only nouveaux riches who have come from poorer backgrounds are into bling and showing off their wealth to say "look at me, look how rich I am"
If your family and friends have always been wealthy and most people in the community around you are fairly wealthy, there is no reason to show off. You can still live a very affluent comfortable life without making it obvious to everybody.
Personally I prefer this style of understated wealth to Las Vegas/Dubai blingfests.
What are you talking about, I didn't ask why they don't have Las Vegas blingfests, I asked why they drive bad cars. A bad car is uncomfortable and unsafe as opposed to a good car. Besides, the difference between a bad car and a good car is only $300 a month.
There's something wrong with a person who is wealthy but in order to hide it from the public drives a car that normally would be driven by a highschool attending mcdonalds employee.
Kampflamm February 9th, 2008, 11:28 PM Which cars are you talking about? Besides, not everyone is stinking rich in Luxemburg.

I don't see any 30 year-old Trabants in those pics, just some newish small cars, nothing wrong with that.
tk780 February 10th, 2008, 01:23 AM Btw, average gross salaries in Luxembourg are no higher than in Britain, Germany or Denmark.
Jonesy55 February 10th, 2008, 01:36 AM ^^ Yeah, probably true, the GDPper capita is boosted by cross border commuters and companies resident for tax purposes who send most of their profits to other countries (same for Ireland).
But in any case it's a prosperous place and I would think that the quality of life is very good.
canucker16 February 10th, 2008, 05:39 AM looks lovely. how some pictures of gorgeous buildings look boring is beyond me. nicer than most NA cities that's for sure.
samba_man March 31st, 2009, 02:11 PM So clean and relaxing atmosphere! Luv it !
antigoon99 March 31st, 2009, 03:47 PM very nice town (isn't really a city...)...I've been there a couple times, and i always found it very authentic.
Tiaren March 31st, 2009, 07:18 PM Luxembourg city is nice and clean. But it's also a bit boring and offers almost no special architecture or landmarks...in comparison to the not far away and bigger city of Trier. :)
Very nice pics though, Kampflamm!
@question of wealth
Luxembourgers don't boast with their money. If you compare cities and villages on the German/Luxembourgian border, Luxembourg definately looks poorer and more rural.
But Luxembourgians tend to spend lots of money in Trier/Germany though.
@Letzeburgisch it's own language
No way! XD
Here in the region almost every little village speaks it's own special dialect. They are as different from Standard German, as Letzeburgisch is. So if Letzeburgisch would be seen as it's own language, than every dialect of the area could be too.
Wikipedia says:
"Three languages are recognised as official in Luxembourg: French, German, and Luxembourgish, a Franconian language of the Moselle region very similar to the local German dialect spoken in the neighbouring part of Germany, except that it includes more borrowings from French. So in principle Luxembourgish is a High German dialect with the status of a national language. Apart from being one of the three official languages, Luxembourgish is also considered the national language of the Grand Duchy; it is the mother tongue or "language of the heart" for nearly all Luxembourgers."
christos-greece March 31st, 2009, 07:21 PM Luxembourg is for sure very nice city  has some very nice view and some awesome structures, like that bridge:

Eh, what about the Kirchberg-plateau, the boulevard Royal, the Adolphe Bridge, the Grund, the fortifications...?
Ok Luxembourg city can be boring as hell, especially on sundays but no special architecture or landmarks? Come on...
Franzl April 1st, 2009, 11:58 AM Btw, average gross salaries in Luxembourg are no higher than in Britain, Germany or Denmark.
Cant agree. The average monthly income of an industrial worker in Luxembourg is 4300 € a month. I dont think that this is common in Europe.
Great pictures Kampflamm!
nastyathenian April 1st, 2009, 12:25 PM Definitely one of my favorite capitals in Europe. Too bad it only depends on buses for its urban transportation.
I visited Luxembourg for the first time in 1993 and I was amazed by its beauty. A few years later I discovered another city that bears a striking resemblance with Luxembourg: Bern.
Similar natural setting, much greenery, cute architecture (although a bit different).

Well, nothing understated about the thread title. Luxembourg(City), capital of the wealthiest country in the world.
Rinchinlhumbe April 1st, 2009, 06:41 PM it's a wealthy city indeed. You do not see any (quote) "villas and ferraris" because
the money is not concentrated entirely in the capital (as ist might be the case in Russia)
because the money is more even/justly distributed with no poverty at all (as it is not the case in the US)
and thirdly, Luxemburgian people are used to being well-off, they do not have to show their money around and stick to "understatement" (as it not might be the case in Dubai or Katar)
There is also some decent nightlife in a backstreet near the railway station, but it only comprises about 3-4 bars/pubs and is the only location where there is something going on after 10 pm
Shezan April 2nd, 2009, 04:06 AM good looking place

Sounds interesting...
Ribarca April 2nd, 2009, 02:43 PM Nice shots. The city is nice, charming and clean but also extremely boring.
We'll see the GDP of Luxemburg drop severely in the coming years for its dependence on finance.
Ingenioren April 2nd, 2009, 03:20 PM Love luxembourg, and there are modern districts with highrises outside of the city, Kirchberg, Belvar.... The valley in the middle is my favourite feuture, haven't seen that anywhere else! Also Luxembourg has a LOT of incomming commuting, i have family in Belgium, that all works in Kirchberg...
cristof April 2nd, 2009, 04:09 PM Kirchberg is Awesome... it's a very nice new extension well done ,
the new museum of contemporary art and the "philharmonic" building are beautiful as well as the shopping mall Auchan...
i had some pics of this neighbourhood but i'v lost them ...the next time i go there, i'll take some pics ;)

Have a look at Bern, Switzerland. :)

cristof April 2nd, 2009, 08:51 PM ahah true, it's a little bit boring indeed, that's why luxemburgers come to Liege or Metz even Arlon to go out :D

Encore April 4th, 2009, 06:06 PM I liked the city very much when I was there. Didn't know what to expect first but it went out very good.
Parisian Girl April 5th, 2009, 05:59 AM Always loved Luxembourg...such a beautiful and elegant place. Not the liveliest place on earth, but it's still very charming and always pleasant to visit. Has a real feel of a time gone by IMO..
