probably retrofitted to withstand 6-8 scale quakes... i trust their engineering (i worked on similar projects)

but one thing that amazes me is... japan's soo squeaky clean! how do they do it? elevated highways usually bring problems for the neighborhood around (and underneath) but the place looks better than before the construction

i wanna drive on it

Urban highways in Japan are fantastic and are priced accordingly.I pay 700 yen to use Osaka's Hanshin highway network. It saves my up to one hour when I want to get out of the city quickly.

However my gripe is the ridiculous prices on inter prefecture highways.Just to go from Osaka to Tokyo costs me 13,000 yen.WTF????

I am very amazed at the number of expressway in Japan and particularly in Tokyo, especially when looking at those double decker ones (is there any triple decker?). Doubtless, the construction technology in Japan is of the highest quality in the world, with such a small footprint for all those and the minimal disrubtion to traffic as vehicles are running underneath highway that is still under construction. But for me in HK where there are also quite a lot of highways, I could only associate those concrete structures with noise, pollution and visual damage to the environment. And I cannot stand thinking that there are far too many expensive highways everywhere in the world, spending so much taxpayers money and tempting commuters to travel by an unideal means. Driving is expensive in terms of the price of infrastructure that gov't has to bear, space that roads occupy which could otherwise be used for improving the environment of communities, noice that residents could only tolerate, pollution that pedestrians have no ground to complain because everybody drives, oil that car burns five-tenfold of other public transport, and time of congestion when everybody floods the city with their luxurious BMW or Benz.

Personally I am very opposed to highways which I don't think is a good means of transport. I just wonder how do you guyz in Japan think.

Why do roads in Japan always look new and perfect. Even the small roads.

I always ask that question too. Perhaps its the alsphalt quality they use, and people's habbit of keeping things clean, Japanese are obsessed with cleanliness. How they keep it always that dark is a good question, the asphalt in LA will turn grey after a year and a half and it starts to crack.

Or maybe its because they have earned the value of hard work.

I dunno. But if the Japan's construction workers all have the idealism of hard work and determination, then you can get your construction done with no delay (and heck sometimes even ahead of schedule). More like the workers there having a high amount of morale/inspiration to do their best to work hard so that whatever construction projects they build would not only benefit them but also others as well.

Well that's only one thing and it's just a theory anyway.

Aside from that, what is the hottest temperature in Japan? Remember that if it's always hot, chances are the construction workers would tend to get lazy and ask for more breaks/pauses from work (due to scorching heat, humidity, etc.)

OMG! Wow! That is one sleek looking highway-to-be!

It's amazing how Japanese-style construction activity entails minimal disturbance/interferance to the surrounding landscape. Furthermore, Japanese construction sites are kept neat unlike most other construction sites in other countries.

Btw, why are they building another highway? Are they going to close the old one? :?

Unsing
December 25th, 2006, 05:25 PM
Simply because the traffic is beyond the capacity.
Now it is 26 times as heavy as when it was opened in 1969, on the way to the economic growth.

Tokyo-Nagoya-Osaka is a really important corridor for Japan in so many ways.
When one route is blocked by an earthquake or something, you can just take the other.

Frungy
December 26th, 2006, 11:34 AM
No, Dai-ni Tomei is completely unnecessary. The Tomei expressway has been declining in use lately, and the areas that need extra capacity are the areas that aren't being duplicated. Both highways will merge on the outskirts of Tokyo at Ebina, and will be a single 4-lane (2 each way) highway when it enters the metropolitan expressway network. This is the most congested part.

This project was pork pork pork for the powerful construction lobby, the same guys who built 2 useless bridges accross the Seto inland sea from Honshu to Shikoku. Meanwhile, projects like the Gaikan and Ken-o expressways go uncompleted, and those are the areas that REALLY need expansion.

I like it when Tokyo buries their highways. Highways should be buried, because they suck when they divide the cityscape like a gorge. Lots of the network runs overtop rivers, which is a disgrace IMO.

Japan's management of the highway network though is a model to be followed. It is excellently managed financially.

-Below of a left map is a 2006 Tokyo highway map. The purple dotted
lines are uncompleted at the time. The blue dottet line isn't sure.
-Below of a right map is a next decade of Tokyo highway map. The red lines will almost complete to make a net of central highways.

Since there're too much daily traffic jams in Tokyo, BCTMG has constracted and connected central highways after and after. By 2007, they will open
apart of a main line, called Chuo Kanjo Shinjuku line, which is red color above a map. A light blue line, called chuo Kanjo Shinagawa line will be connected by 2013.
This connection is clearly important which among the are has the heaviest conjestion in Tokyo, it can effect to make a less time to transit through Tokyo.

A aim to Cmplete the lines can solve many problems and reduce many pollutions as you know.

I've been researching the net for ages and still, I can't find one source that shows how many automotive vehicles are registered in this urban agglomeration.

If anyone knows the statistics regarding this matter, would you kindly give me a PM [Private Message]. Thanks. :)

If I'd make a wild guess...could it be as high as 10 million? [That includes motorcycles, of course.]

With the expected decline in the Japanese population in the upcoming decade, can we expect the number of automobiles on the road to decrease by then?

Is it possible? If so, then I hope it is.

Some parts of Japan are congested atm (esp. Tokyo). With less people being born and more people retiring, there would be lesser cars on the road.

And when there are less cars, there is lesser traffic.

LESS CARS = LESS TRAFFIC CONGESTION :)

Krattle
May 10th, 2007, 09:36 PM
^^^ LOL, traffic congestion isn't the only thing that'll take a slump when a huge portion of Japan's population dies off. If countries like the US and Japan don't get rid of healthcare soon they'll destroy themselves inside-out. It feeds on young people, putting the burden on them to pay for the ever-increasing older population. Because of high taxes fewer and fewer people are financially capable of supporting families. You better be worrying about your economy, not rejoicing over lower traffic congestion.

Judging from the list though, it seems that there are still 3 more road links that are still to be completed within this year.

As for the rest, I guess 2015 is the year when all of the road links above would be completed. I can't wait till then (although that's like another 8 years more) :P

^^^ Thank you very much, you were even thoughtful enough to include a picture showing the name of the building. Again - thanks alot.

Does any one know if this is the only example of a road going through a building like this?

Are all Japanese roads in these cities always new. Just explain to me why the roads are perfect and smooth. Evem the small ones. Is it something the roads are made of? The mojority of them look very good condition.

haha ... i'm actually wondering the same thing ... in almost if not all of the photos of the road (including in the house backyards) that i saw, the roads look like as if they were newly paved ... even the white lines (dunno what they're called) look intact

Un-like some so-called industrialized nation who boasts they have the best road infrastructure in the world, Japan keeps good maintenace of roads re-paved about every 5~10 years and re-painted every 3~5 years so you will never find a hole in the road the hard way.

I think there are some things that Japan spends more money on (like road maintenance) and other things that they take care of less. While on a tour on the Imperial Palace grounds in Tokyo for instance I was amazed to see boarded up buildings.
