View Full Version : What are the remnants of chivarly in modern British society?
loureed October 9th, 2005, 04:38 PM I know nothing about chivalry, but would you say there is still some residue of this historical code of behavior?
Would opening the door for your lady or other people considered an act stemming from chivalry? I don't remember if Londoners hold the door open for people are not.
Anyways, discuss.
kebabmonster October 9th, 2005, 04:42 PM I can tell you where you won't find it-
the back of the number 8 bus in Greater Manchester, any kebabhouse or taxi rank anytime after 10pm,
In general, it is still a polite society though, where people do hold doors open for oneanother.
Chivalry is giving way to Political Correctness now.
london-b October 9th, 2005, 04:53 PM I always hold doors open for people! :carrot:
JackSwan October 9th, 2005, 04:57 PM I always thank the cash machine for dispensing my money. :)
Manchester Planner October 9th, 2005, 05:06 PM I try to be nice, but in some parts of Britain you get weird looks if you are polite and helpful! :(
Oaronuviss October 9th, 2005, 09:12 PM I'm polite, and I try and be as chivalrous as possible considering chivalry is pretty much dead in the world.
Martyn October 9th, 2005, 09:15 PM it has been scientifically proven that women can open doors on their own, the lazy buggers.

Us Brits do like a nice orderly queue, and queue jumpers are severly dealt with, in fact just last week I witnessed an angry mob beat to death two queue jumpers.

Englishman October 9th, 2005, 10:50 PM I stopped a fair lady getting her feet wet by laying down my cloak on a puddle last week.
dinp October 9th, 2005, 11:28 PM I'm quite courteous when it comes to holding doors for people and so on. I'm regularly disgusted by people who refuse to hold doors, even though they can see me carrying heavy items and know I have no way of opening the door myself other than kicking it.
I'm not deterred though, my good will goes on - until I enter my car that is. Then everyone is a prick :D
gothicform October 10th, 2005, 12:07 AM ok, here's acouple of examples. look at how a chaffeur walks around a car to open a door, that dates back to the times we had horse and carriages. another thing is the woman walkingo n the right of the man, apparently dating back to when you could draw your sword without chopping your girl up in the process.
caw123 October 10th, 2005, 12:10 AM What type of sword are we talking about here? :?

LOL!!!
JDRS October 10th, 2005, 06:34 PM I'll hold the door open if someone's right behind me but if they're a little way off I'll leave it. I mean it's not hard to open a door. :|

hmmmm would you say that dominant type personalities tend to want to be on the left hand side when walking with someone?
