Short Story

The First Bali Bombing occurred on October 12, 2002 in the town of Kuta on the Indonesian island of Bali, killing 202 people and injuring a further 209. It is considered the deadliest act of terrorism in Indonesian history. The majority of the dead were foreign tourists, especially Australians, but nearly one fifth were Indonesian nationals.

A number of Indonesians were sentenced to death for their parts in the bombings and in October 2002 Abu Bakar Bashir, a leader of the Jemaah Islamiah organisation often accused of being behind the attacks, was charged over his alleged role in the bombing. In March 2005, Bashir was found guilty of conspiracy over the attacks in Bali.

Bombing

At 23:05 (15:05 UTC) on 12 October 2002, an electronically triggered bomb hidden in a backpack ripped through Paddy's Bar. The device was small and crude, but killed the backpack owner, likely a suicide operative. The injured immediately fled into the street. Approximately ten to fifteen seconds later, a second much more powerful car bomb of close to 1,000 kg, concealed in a white Mitsubishi van was detonated by remote control in front of the Sari Club. Windows throughout the town were blown out. The explosion left a three feet deep crater [1]. There were scenes of horror and panic inside and outside the bars. The local hospital was unable to cope with the number of injured, particularly burn victims. Many of the wounded, of all nationalities, were flown by the Royal Australian Air Force to hospitals in Darwin and other Australian cities.

Almost simultaneously, a third bomb detonated in the street in front of the American consulate in Bali. This bomb caused no injuries, and only modest damage.

The final death toll was 202, the majority holiday-makers in their 20s and 30s who were in the two bars. Many Balinese/Indonesians working in Kuta also were killed. Hundreds more people suffered horrific burns and other injuries. The largest group among those killed were holiday-makers from Australia. The Bali bombing is sometimes called "Australia's September 11" because of the large number of its citizens killed in the attack.

There were many acts of individual heroism. Kossy Halemai, a hotel manager, was singled out for praise with the award of Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2005.

Three bodies remained unidentified and were cremated at Bali in September 2003.

Nice post. Thanks. Particularly good because it is not overflowing with sentiment but rather it lets the facts speak for the themselves.

(did you write it?)

If only in terms of number of people dead, worse things have happened recently (Tsunami, Pakistani earthquake). But - and this might be a controversial statement - although devasted for the rest of my life, i would be a lot happier to lose a family member to a tsunami, earthquake or more realistically in car accident than a terrorist attack. Accidents are a lot easier to come to terms with than terrorist barbarity.

Maksudnya... I think I agree with Bashir: "You are stupid to punish Amrozi if he really knows how to make such a bomb. You should hire him to be a military consultant, because there is no military or police person (in Indonesia) who can make such a bomb. If Amrozi really did make that bomb, he deserves the Nobel Prize." Well I don't agree he should be made a military consultant, but in principle, what he says is true: if Amrozi really made a bomb that can make people VANISH completely, without a trace, and then transport it in a van... He truly is a genious. It has to be pretty high-tech, and expensive as hell (unless you're a government... think nuclear-technology). What am I saying... Well figure it out.

What's your source? Anything credible? If it's just your Mum's friend or a school mate, I'd suggest it's just baseless nonsense that's spread by people with nothing better to do. There maybe one or two discrepancies in body counts or complete incinerations, but "puluhan" could mean anything and sounds over the top.

Sorry

Again that's just nonsensical gossip. THe make up of the bomb is no mystery and has been analysed and documented in great detail by experts. I'm no bomb or forensic expert, so i don't know off the top of my head, but the information shouldn't be too hard to find again from more credible sources.

Aren't the two Malaysians the one that designed the bomb? Amrozi is involved in the planning of the bombing. His own brother testified against him. There is no doubt in my mind that Amrozi is responsible for the 2002 bombing. I don't trust a word that Baashir say. How can anybody trust the word of a traitor?

As for making a bomb. Baashir cannot be that stupid. There are divisions in the military who's sole purpose is to designed or to try to dismantle bombs. The bomb that was used in the 2002 bombing wasn't a work of art. You can make the same bomb using directions from the internet.

You can download the Anarchist Cookbook and learn how to make bombs and create all kind of havoc.

Dr Azahari helps Ali gufron designed and made the bombs, Amrozi is just the transporter and the executor, the original idea was from Imam samudra. The driver who drove the L300 was Muklas, which in the corner of legian, he swap it with ilyas who died as a suicide bomber. The bombs was designed using C4 and TNT, but until now police doesnt want to admit it, because the C4 is tended to be stolen from you know who.
