Fresh out of the oven:
Today's picture (12 October 2005, 11:30am): The junction of Syggrou and Kallirois Avenues opposite the Intercontinental Hotel with an unusual cloudy sky and the head offices of the Interamerican Insurance group in the foreground (actually they own 4 buildings all along Sygggrou avenue these guys, I wonder why not build a single 30-storey one and accomodate all their offices there. Anyway, enjoy and wait for more... :)

-Ethniki Asfalistiki (National Insurance Company, a branch of the national bank of Greece in Syggrou Avenue) Head Offices. Architect is the one and only Marrio Botta with two new Greek architects. Botta also built the National Bank of Greece head offices (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=217356) (click on the link, you won't regret it)

-The Onasseion Cardiac Surgery Centre in Syggrou Avenue- One of the Top in Europe, built with money from the Onassis foundation which is managing part of the huge assets and properties of the late Greek Tycoon Alexandros Onassis:

-Last (but not least), a pic of a Hummer SUV parked on Syggrou Avenue, right where the airbridge from the Kallirois Avenue lands. Must be for sale as used by the nearby car dealer. Couldn't resist to take a pic. Not a building or a house but almost as big as a house... Enjoy it with the buildings of Syggrou Avenue as a background...

I liked:
the MRA building (what I can see I like)
Benaki museum (very nice)
Acropolis Museum (very beautiful, amazing detailing)
The building in the post of Leafs Fanatic
Olympic Stadium (nice organic structure)
Ethniki Asfalistiki (very nice form, didnt know that building, great!)
To a lesser extent I also liked the Onnaseion, probably because Ive got a weak spot for architecture of that era.
The rest in this thread was really horrible I think...I dont how or why, but these office buildings in Greece are 99% of the times really ugly. Those reflective glass facade systems are very 80s and most of the times done in a very cheap poor manner. This is I think corporate architecture in its worst form.

^^ I would like to see more projects by Porphyrios in Athens
AAL
October 5th, 2008, 02:06 AM
I love Porphyrios. The kind of post-modernism that he employs in the Interamerican builing in Athens is very popular in London...however, the greek architectural establishment is so conservative that it cannot accept anything that is not traditional - and its tradition is, of course, post-war modernism...
Postmodernism is mocked by modernists in Greece, the same way that the classicists mocked the modernists 80 years ago...
For me, it's like politics: I do not see why one has to "take sides" with anyone. Any good proposition should always be considered...
systema magicum
October 5th, 2008, 05:30 PM
This is very true as London has many buildings of this type and this height at Saint Paul square for example at the City .Well the redevelopment around Saint Paul was very controversial but in my opinion the architecture that was applied was something more than the appropriate for this area and was also accompanied by impressive public art installations. I would like to see something similar happening at the center of our city for example to change some facades at Syntagma or Omonoia or for new buildings. We have some incredible office buildings from the sixties at the center of Athens but at the same time some others are just horrible and neglected. Anyway we want new buildings for Athens and good or innovative architecture and as we live in a pluralistic era everything new can be interesting and improve our urban environment. As for a part of the Greek architects…they are at the same condition with the Greek society…lost somewhere between 1975 and 1985…so I will start to sing for them a song from Blur…the stereotypes…( imagine me singing) nice song and I will use the title of their album: We need the Great escape…..NOW!!!!!!!!

Interesting architecture indeed.
Just a thought.....
Having the best town hall does not always lead to having the best municipal governance.....
I would prefer better/improved municipal governmance....and not imposing edifaces to simpleton mayors.

Well yea, the Palaio Faliro town hall is a disappointment. It does look unfinished, I'm passing by it pretty often and for about 6 months after its completion I was wondering when are they gonna finish it until I realized that they're not gonna. Well at least it's maybe the "greenest" building in Athens, its got power autonomy and some other environmental innovations.
The Gerakas town hall looks much better though.

http://briefcase.pathfinder.gr/download/gm22634/40271/483568/0/Athens+-+Onassion+Cardiac+Surgery+Center+-small+.jpg
This building looks extremely hostile, and uses scarce urban space in a highly inefficient manner. More bulk could have been added to the upper floors, to free up the ground for walkable space and vegetation. Looks like a nightmarish concrete wedding cake.
http://briefcase.pathfinder.gr/download/gm22634/40271/483544/0/Athens+-+Hondos+Center+2-small.jpg
I always hated the Omonoia Hondos Center. This architecture is inexcusable for a post-1985 building. Who thought it was cool to bring brutalism back?

Either they decided to finish the landscaping before finishing the building, or this is a bad attempt at modern architecture.

come on, it is not the same....The Interamerican building doesn't look like disneyland. It balances between modernism and neo classicism without creating a strong contrast. Maybe, this photo wasn't good enough.
Modern and classical/traditional/industrial elements can work well together, as long as they create one seamless image. This can be more difficult to achieve than using just one style. However it can be a challenge.
Of-course,as you said, it is just a personal opinion.:)

A new addition in the roundabout junction of Kifissias Avenue and Attica road on 6 Chimarras street. It is under completion, not exaclty a gem but a decent development. Of course, imagine it five times taller :D

A very big minus in this pic is the toll station of the Attica road. They could have done better with this one as it is an eyesore.
Tomorrow I will go there early in the morning. There are a few new gems in need of depiction. Looks like after a period of a few years inertia, there is activity again. As expected, nothing taller than seven floors though :(

Dear Greg and the rest,
I already posted a LOOOOOONG post in the "Athens General Developments" thread. At the risk of being accused with spamming, I also post it here as follows since I realized that there are many images of contemporary buildings too. Now, in conjunction to what Greg says, and after you see what's next, feel free to comment on the developments in our city.
All pics but one are two weeks old at most (yes, been busy) at the time of this posting :)
Enjoy!!!
During the last few days (Greek Orthodox Easter, remember, vacation, and a happy me in the empty streets :)) I nicked some time to go around Athens and especially in the main north-south corridor, I.e. Kifissias to Syggrou Avenues where as it seems, there's some activity going on there as far as commercial/ office construction is concerned.
In this context, on good Friday and Saturday I proceeded to one of my "grand photo tours". Truth is that in my eyes, there was enough sunshine that would allow for some decent photo-shooting, something to replace the bleak weather -and psychology- we have all benn constantly exposed to in Athens during the last few months.
So let it begin with some comments and explanations where necessary. All pics are mine unless otherwise indicated.
...yes, I'm back!!! :)
-New buildings in Kifissias and Attica road "cake" roundabout junction. Decent lowrises but nothing to be thrilled about.

The next is on Kifissias Avenue, just before the intersection with Panormou street as we come from the north. It was never presented here although it is quite interesting. Its name is "Cosmos Center" and was built as a shopping center during the late 1980s. However, it never attained its goal to become a retail destination and now is mostly accommodates offices and public services if I my memory serves me well... Very decent for the time and the purpose it was built (1987!!!).

Next to it, there is a new addition under construction with some "loud" names appearing on its info billboard like the ones of Alexandros Tombazis and "Meletitiki Ltd" and Ioannis Vikelas as co-architect!!! Has been on hold for some years but now it seems to be heading full thrust towards completion. Nothing very fancy on the exterior, not something very good or very bad. I will need to visit it once it is completed. In any case, it is good to see that there is serious activity in various parts of Athens these days.

Next stop is Kallirois Avenue, where there are a few interesting spote probably never seen in this forum before.
One is the Ministry of Interior, which I certainly don't like it for the purpose it serves. I mean, if it was used as head offices for an X company, that would be fine. I find it a little cheap in terms of external appearance in relation to its use as a ministry, with the positive point that it presents some originality in design, compared to the concrete boxes surrounding it:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/gm2263/Athens%20Skyscrapers%20and%20Modern%20Architecture%205/MinistryofInterior-small900x.jpg
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/gm2263/Athens%20Skyscrapers%20and%20Modern%20Architecture%205/MinistryofInterior-2-small900x.jpg
On the contrary, I find that the next building has more luster, completed late 70 or early 80s. Its characteristic is its size, practically occupying a whole block. Also ahead of its time, it looks good, especially from across the street and makes a good visual ensemble with the bus station on the Syggrou Avenue metro station. A modern spot in this city :)
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/gm2263/Athens%20Skyscrapers%20and%20Modern%20Architecture%205/80-88SyggrouAvenue-4-small900x.jpg

Next to the station, there is the "shell" of the old Fix brewery, built by the the architect Zenetos which is -at last!!!- transformed into a Modern Arts Museum with completion time around 2011-2012:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/gm2263/Athens%20Skyscrapers%20and%20Modern%20Architecture%205/ModertArtMuseum-Small900x.jpg
This is also a dramatic view of the Athens Intercontinental Hotel seen from this area. Worth a look:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/gm2263/Athens%20Skyscrapers%20and%20Modern%20Architecture%205/KalliroisAvenuetowardsIntercontinen.jpg
If 12 storeys look like this, imagine whet 30 would look like :(
Arriving in Syggrou Avenue, there are some things that we need to go though first:
This Avenue is, since 1980 partly a highway which according to some (including me, if you asked me...) divides a large part of Athens into two. The reason for this is that there is no ground pedestrian (or other street) crossing from one side of the avenue to the other, with the existing underground passages looking too risky at night (i.e. have you seen the rape scene in "Irreversible"? :runaway:
What is interesting about this avenue is that during the late 1960s and early 1970s and that at the time that Kifissias Avenue looked like a country road and the site of the Olympic complex was nothing but an olive grove, Suggrou had this characteristic of a long and straight boulevard that could have been the next promise for Athenian cosmopolitanism. Office buildings, access to the seafront, and the promise of a new Athens unfolding in the air, were its major advantages.
Today, almost four decades later, the Avenue clearly does not look like the superhighway to the 21st century, compared to the luckier Kifissias Avenue.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/gm2263/Athens%20Skyscrapers%20and%20Modern%20Architecture%205/SyggrouAvenue-small900x.jpg
However, it still has a lot of cards under its sleeve, with many buildings far surpassing the blue Glass Boxes of Kifissias Avenue and some of its spots are well ahead Kifissias Avenue which only wins because of the neighboring Olympic Stadium (Calatrava marked its passage there) and the new shopping centers in its vicinity. However, Syggrou has the view of the sea in the distance, as well as a number of buildings that put to the shame all Kifissias Office buildings built after 1995 (sorry dear Babis Vovos!!!). Especially with regards to the developments that took place after the millennium, with the exception of the OAKA and the arches of the new "Avenue-Carrefour" Mall, nothing really exciting happened there, especially as far as office construction is concerned.
On the contrary, Syggrou avenue has slowly but surely start to rebuild its image with some of the best commercial and not only developments in this country such as the National Insurance buildings (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/cx/?id=110341) designed by Mario Botta in collaboration with some young Greek architects, or the new Onassis House for the letters and the arts which is nearing completion and is expected to be fully operational in 2010:

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/gm2263/Athens%20Skyscrapers%20and%20Modern%20Architecture%205/OnassisHouseofLetters8-Construction.jpg
Also, interesing enough is the nearby Odeon StarCity Cinema Multiplex which was also completed in 2000:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/gm2263/Athens%20Skyscrapers%20and%20Modern%20Architecture%205/ODEONStarCity-2-small900x.jpg
...as well as the new ATE Insurance building:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/gm2263/Athens%20Skyscrapers%20and%20Modern%20Architecture%205/163SyggrouAvenue-small900x.jpg

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/gm2263/Athens%20Skyscrapers%20and%20Modern%20Architecture%205/163SyggrouAvenue-3-small900x.jpg
Another building which is also VERY IMPRESSIVE and was recently completed, is the one of "Hydrogeios" (i.e. "Globe") Insurance. Please take a moment to enjoy how this little gem looks and imagine what a similar buildingh might look like if the height limits and the building code were not as stupid as they are in this country:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/gm2263/Athens%20Skyscrapers%20and%20Modern%20Architecture%205/254-258SyggrouAvenue-small900x.jpg

Also, one should NOT forget that in the neighborhood of the Interamerican Tower (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=165799) in Kallithea, there are constant additions, and that the end of Doiranis street (which leads to the site of the new Athens Library and Opera to be built, designed by Rentzo Piano) looks something like this:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/gm2263/Athens%20Skyscrapers%20and%20Modern%20Architecture%205/DoiranisStreetKallitheasmall900x.jpg
...while finally, on the opposite side we have a new Birth and Materity hospital under construction bearing the name "REA Maternity Hospital"

So, "what's the story, morning glory"?
First, Syggrou is re-gaining its status as the city gate from the seafront which one way or another will be transformed in the next few years (the "crisis" will not go on forever!!!). Kifissias Avenue certainly has more potential but sees it to be dramatically decreased with the reactions of the NIMBYS and the attainement of the role of a retail center as an alternative to the one of the office provider. Also, by reading through the lines in the real estate news, one can easily observe that even in this time of crisis, Kifissias Avenue is seen as the top place to be, in terms of office locations.
However, due to a strange combination of down-planning, reactionary NIMBYS and lack of resolve on the part of the state, there is an unreal concentration of shopping and entertainment centers in Kifissias Avenue and the neighboring Attica Road while there IS some serious demand from high caliber clients for office space (regardless of the fact that the crisis has affected the medium users, high-end demand is there).
On the other hand, although a second choice for years, Syggrou is going uphill with many NEW office constructions in the pipeline. I mean, how many office buildings have you seen been completed lately in Kifissias? Because in Syggrou, they may be anything from half a dozen and up for the last three years alone.
Now of course I believe that this is a minuscule level of activity, even in the middle of such a "crisis". In any case though, Syggrou is making a comeback at the expense of Kifissias, the Kifissos Avenue and the national road Athens - Lamia, or the Athinon (Kavalas) Avenue, which still has to fulfill its promise as the next commercial property center in Athens.
Overall, I was slightly impressed but where the situation will go, it is within the next few months to be determined. Till then, we should not at least forget that in contrast to the ambient gloom since this last December, "something's moving".
...all that of course until the blessed day when, somewhere in the Athens metro area, a building with a two-digit number of floors will be nearing top out, and a new day will dawn for most of us here....

Cirque Du Sooo lame!
I disagree. It's no Las Vegas - it's actually a very nice piece of postmodern architecture. The denial of people in Greece to accept this style shows, if you ask me, a very conservative attitude, which reminds me of the attitude of some classicist in the early 20th century towards modernism. Our current tradition is modernism, so the denial to accept anything that has followed modernism is no different to the denial of the classicists to accept modernism.
It's easy to make kitsch buildings and call them postmodern - but this is not one of them. It's built by Porphyrios, a well-known UK-based Greek architect that has built many many buildings around the world.

This style has been dominant since the '90s in London - but here, as usual, we are still debating the priciples of postmodernism...

I would also like to add that, despite being a big skyscraper fan, I would NOT like to see anything tall in Syngrou. The view of the city sloping from the Acropolis to the sea is magic and should not be disturbed. I'd rather demolish and rebuilt 60% of the buildings in Kifisias (and 95% of the buildings in Mesogeion!!!)

@ Teddy Amsterdam
Allow me to disagree about this building dear Teddy. It has some elements of post-modernism that give it some weird tones but this does no0t make it THAT offensive. On the contrary, given the procrustean 27m height limit and its distinctive location, I believe that it serves the city quite well... :)
Look here for instance at the following picture (2005) depicting the Syggrou and Kallirois junction and the position of the building in question. Not bad :)
http://briefcase.pathfinder.gr/download/gm22634/35743/482640/0/Syggrou+Kallirois+Small.JPG
@ AAL: I agree about the Syggrou situation with a minor reservation: I believe that up to 12 storeys could have been built anyway.
Other than that, I fully and wholeheartedly agree with you especially about the situation in Messogeion, Kifissias, and the rest.

As promised:
Talking about Takis Zenetos, he is a controversial yet utterly respected figure who explored modernistic forms trying to combine flexibility in functionality with the modernist rigidity.
Besides the "Fix Brewery building" whose shell will be used in order to accomodate the new Athens Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Zenetos is also known for another pioneering creation which is yet unknown to the Greek public, although it constitutes one of the most advanced conceptions of modernist architecture in Europe. The Flying Saucer shaped school that "fell to earth" specifically in the residential area of Aghios Dimitrios in Athens.
Also, Zenetos was one of the proponents of "communication through computers" and shared creativity amongst people. Too bad he didn't live to see today's developments. For reasons unknown to me, he committed suicide in 1977, just one year after the school in Aghios Dimitrios was completed.
But let's read first whatever information we can glean out of the very good http://www.culture2000.tee.gr/ site (Visit is, it is an unbelievable source on architecture information about Athens, Paris, and London!!!! ).
Secondary School

Architects
Takis Ch. Zenetos (1926-1977)
The Secondary School (Junior and Senior) of Ayios Dimitrios constitutes an experimental but utopian creation by Takis Zenetos. The users’ failure to take advantage of the building’s potential has made it a symbol of the chasm between the reality of the large state school buildings and the better future for them envisioned by the architect when he designed it.
Zenetos’s building houses a junior secondary school (gymnasio) for about 1500 pupils in an experimental and innovative circular structure. It has three floors and the ground plan of each floor includes three standardised modules of 160 pupils each, with four classrooms per module which could be converted into a single space. These modules were placed around a central core of audio-visual aids. In direct contact with the core were the facilities for the teaching staff.
The circular articulation was selected by the architect for reasons of economy in the building and flexibility in its future use. In the treatment of the elevations, Zenetos broadened the international brutalist code in an imaginative way.
A stylistic feature of decisive significance is the succession of louvred roofs surrounding the southern semi-circle of the three floors, with a width that fluctuates according to the orientation so as to provide effective protection to the interior without wasting material. The materials that dominate here are concrete and the metal window sashes.
________________
I went to Aghios Dimitrios to find the building one cloudy Synday last May. What I saw left me with mixed feelings. First of all, the building is under refurbishment and so were some additional constuctions next to it, so, what you will see is a bit messy and I am sure its creator wouldn't like you to see in this condition.
Second, although neither the surroundings and the area, especially the estates to the east of the complex are in their best shape ever, still, the building manages to emanate the spiritual power of its creator. What Zenetos did there was megapolisomancy -urban magic - transformation. It got rusty over the years but as I read in the papers, only temporarily. The school and the rest of the properties are used as school units again and are undergoing a renovation phase. What the outcome will be, we will see soon.
In the beginning I was unhappy with the weather conditions as I wanted blue skies. However, after I got on location I preferred to shoot with the clouds above me. For some reason, the colour of the sky made a worthwhile addition which emphasised the overall atmosphere that I was drawn in that strange Sunday morning in the beginning of May...
As if the soul of the architect was there to make me feel its presence...
Who knows?

Ωδείο Aθηνών
Bασ.
Iωάννης Δεσποτόπουλος (Jan Despo, 1903-1992)

Γιατί βρε systema και αυτό του Μπαρμπαλιά πάνω από το σταθμό "Μέγαρο" του μετρό από την απέναντι στη Β Σοφίας καλό δεν είναι;

^^ I agree! Very interesting architecture, and also notice the ceiling height: unlike most recent mousetraps, this one has the same height as the neighbouring '50s buildings!
