Its so futuristic looking, I didnt know it was built in '62!
Mr. Detroit February 22nd, 2003, 07:44 PM Nice one Napptown to put this up. I was in Seattle a few years ago and really liked this place. It is in a pretty sweet location in a middle of a park, next to their basketball arena (I believe it is Key Arena, where the Sonics play). They also did a pretty good job of putting it a little bit out of downtown so you did not feel engulfed by it. I was disappointed that it was a little too cloudy to see Mt. Rainer...but hey, it's Seattle weather. (Not saying ours in Detroit is much better). So...i will give it an enthused 9.5/10
Wu-Gambino February 22nd, 2003, 10:38 PM I can't wait until Spring Break when I will actually get to go to the Space Needle! I love it and in most photographs they make it look taller than other buildings like Bank of America! 9
DrumCorpsAlum February 22nd, 2003, 10:45 PM It's vintage and futuristic all at the same time. No matter how far into the future we go, and how more futuristic the city and the skyline gets, the space needle will always look state of the art. 9/10.
renell February 22nd, 2003, 11:34 PM very advanced considering its built in 1962 7.5
Tony 175 February 23rd, 2003, 02:11 AM Its one of my top 4 observation towers! Its definetely up there. Due to pictures like the 1st one, where its up close, i thought it was huge! But its smaller then I thought.
But I still like it and give it a 9! :D
The Messiah March 19th, 2003, 08:47 PM This just belongs with Seattle.
It has a real futuristic look.

X-seed 4000 March 21st, 2003, 01:39 AM 10/10 its 4 decades old and it still looks very futuristic! If it were possible, I'd give it an 11 becuase it goes so well with the skyline!
SteelCity32 March 21st, 2003, 03:58 AM something about tv towers and observation towers that amaze me...

New Jack City May 11th, 2003, 03:59 AM 9/10...It's the definition of Seattle. Even though it's not an actual skyscraper it's one of the best.

7 World Trade June 26th, 2004, 04:02 AM this tower defines seattle. can't wait to see it in august!

matthew_p2004 June 26th, 2004, 06:28 AM I stood at the top of the Space Needle many years ago...great view from up there.
I give it a 9.5 because it looks so futuristic and it is the symbol for Seattle.

odegaard September 9th, 2004, 01:05 AM I applied for a part time job to be an "elevator operator" at the space needle once but they never called me back
I liked that scene in the movie "men in black" where the saucer section of the space needle comes crashing down :)
the most recognizable land mark in Seattle is obviously the space needle and the second would be it's monorail which takes you from the space needle to downtown.

Monkey November 3rd, 2004, 09:17 PM Fantastic landmark, and quite futuristic.
9.5
algonquin November 4th, 2004, 04:08 PM This tower works well as an icon for Seattle, which isn't an easy task for it's hieght in relation to Seattles other buildings (can anyone picture what the tower in Calgary looks like... no? thats my point).
It has a fussiness of detail that gives it an almost gothic sensibility. Ironically, this virtue allows it to avoid feeling 'dated'... even though it's an obvious product of the 60's
the lower level that sticks out like some kind of awning is clumsy looking, though.
I'll give it a generous 8.5
DamienK December 15th, 2004, 04:06 PM Distinctive. 9/10
VanSeaPor March 22nd, 2005, 10:40 AM 9.5/10 Very futuristic despite being built in 1962!
My top five observation towers
1) Oriental Pearl Tower
2) Eiffel Tower
3) CN Tower
4) Space Needle
5) Skytower

8.5/10
Ellatur March 23rd, 2005, 02:11 AM 9.5/10
hauntedheadnc March 24th, 2005, 03:11 AM Definitely one of the best because of its timeless quality and the fact that it's such an icon. Seattle just wouldn't be the same without it. It's done as much for Seattle as the Gateway Arch did for St. Louis -- such a part of the city that you can't even imagine them without it! 10.

some interesting facts about the space needle!
Did you know...
• The Space Needle is approximately 1,320 Milky Way candy bars (605 feet) tall.
• On a hot day the Space Needle expands about one inch.
• During the construction of the Space Needle, it took 467 cement trucks less than 12 hours to fill the foundation hole (30-feet deep and 120-feet across); this was the largest continuous concrete pour ever attempted in the West.
• As an April Fool's joke a local television station aired a phony report that the Space Needle had fallen over. Emergency phone lines were swamped with calls. The Space Needle received more than 700 calls, even though there was a flashing alert during the entire report telling the audience that it was a joke. One Spokane man even jumped in his car and began driving to Seattle because his daughter worked at the Space Needle.
• The first Space Needle Manager, Hoge Sullivan, had acrophobia, a fear of heights.
Interesting facts taken from www.spaceneedle.com
I love Seattle and the needle..
