The first thing is SWITCH ISLAND, its evil, its smicircular but it affects us all.
Switch island is currently being redisigned to handel traffic better for the following
year(s). I travel Switch Island every weekday at 8.20am and 3.35pm, and the traffic does seem to be working well.

What is happening?

ONE of Merseyside's most congested road junctions is to undergo a complete redesign in the hope of ending years of commuter misery.

Switch Island, where the M57, the M58 and Dunnings Bridge Road meet, has long been a frustration for the 43,000 drivers who use it every day with vehicles often ending up queuing on the roundabout at peak times.

But the Highways Agency will today announce £5m of improvements to reduce congestion, with work getting under way next month and due for completion in spring next year.

Story continues

The redesign is intended to improve flow through the junction and result in fewer delays and a cut in accidents.

It should also help the large numbers of HGVs coming off the motorways and heading for the Port of Liverpool down Dunnings Bridge Road.

Highways Agency project manager Paul Elliott said: "These changes should provide long-term improvements which will take a lot of the frustration out of the journey for thousands of motorists for years to come.

"I am sure they will also be welcomed by those hauliers travelling to and from the docks.

"Once the work is complete Switch Island will be able to cope with more vehicles, more efficiently and safely. We had hoped to start work earlier in the year but it took longer than we anticipated to design road works which could strike the right balance between being able to maintain the capacity of the junction and the need to complete the scheme quickly and safely.

"We are confident that we have now got that right."

The redesign will create a new section of carriageway at the end of the M57, which will take vehicles to a traffic signal-controlled junction, where motorists can go directly from the M57 either left to Bootle and the docks, or right to the A59 and M58 towards Maghull.

Extra lanes will also be added to the entry and exit slip roads on the M57. This will remove the current problem of heavy traffic travelling along the A59 (Ormskirk Road) between city centre Liverpool and the M57 queuing on the roundabout.

Other improvements include safer pedestrian access to the Asda supermarket on Ormskirk Road and new facilities for cyclists.

Landscaping work will attempt to improve the look of what is one of the key gateways to central Merseyside.

During the roadworks, all existing lanes will be kept open during peak hours to prevent lengthy jams. Sorting that out proved diffiucult which has resulted in the work starting later than expected.

Traffic restrictions will be in place during the work with a 40mph speed limit on the M57 approach along with a lane restriction for HGVs.

On the roundabout itself and the Dunnings Bridge Road approach, a 30mph speed limit will be in place.

The M57 should have a turn off exclusively for Asda. This would ease traffic congestion at Switch Island. Hardly rocket science, is it?

Sefton are to up themselves to do that,

sadly they think the People of Aintree enjoy the sound of the
Tesco delivery wagon bouncing over the speed bumps at 75 mph while gettin bricked by yobs comming out of the OPEN ALL HOURS pub,

so they belive shopping at Asda is done by other people outside sefton

Thanks

Isn't IKEA going nearby Switch Island, just think of the traffic then.

I assume plans for the M57 extension to Southport were scrapped long ago.

That is why Switch Island is such a mess as it is: the whole area is one big unfinished worksite (tell me where Junction 2 is on the M58 for instance).

I could be wrong as I haven't heard anything for ages, but last I heard after being turned down at Speke (no room apparently :bash: ), they had turned their attentions to a site at Litherland. Although I agree, when I went to the IKEA at Warrington a few weeks ago, the queue stretched over a mile from the car park back along the approach roads and onto the motorway. The thought of one anywhere near Switch Island doesn't bear thinking about.

It'll be on the site of the former Peerless Oils factory on Dunnings Bridge/Heysham Rd, opposite the Mecca bingo.
