It's because alot of people in the United States are mostly focused on domestic interests. They don't pay too much attention to what is going on outside their country.

How about this, show them Kansas folk pics of HK's skyline especially the Symphony of Lights. Also the streetscapes, infrastructure and transportation ;)

Do you know I was asked by one Canadian that whether Japan is the capital of Hong Kong :eek2: while I was traveling to Vancouver couples of years ago. How ridiculous :eek2: :eek2: :eek2:

To be frank, I never expected some Canadian can be that ignorant of HK or even the whole Asia by the fact that there are a huge amount of Asian imigrants. I didn't expect they are familiar with Asia but I thought they're supposed to know some basic information about Asia.

But all in all, I love Vancouver, it's an extremely nice place for travelling.

STUPID.... =.="

It's not they're actually stupid but alot of Americans and perhaps, Canadians are more focused on domestic interests. Either that or they don't teach geography in schools. Both countries are huge. Someone living in the East Coast wouldn't care so much on what's happening on the West Coast or vice versa.

Probably its the same thing with China. People in Urumqi wouldn't pay too much attention on what's happening in Guangzhou. Maybe I might be wrong!

How about this, what are some of the advertisements you see in a local Kansas TV channel and compare them with most ads you see in HK.

superchan7

Maybe Chevy Trucks, Denny's diner, local home supply stores...

I don't think they'll see any ads promoting Hong Kong tourism, or Dubai tourism, etc...

When I was in LA, most ads I saw were on automobiles, health care or auto insurance. I think advertisments are more creative on either Chicago or New York.

As for HK, I see alot of ads on business and banking. Makes the city very professional isn't it.

Why do they think HK is part of Japan????? :nono:  :ohno: :weird:

Because HK has heavy Japanese influences. .. :)

So many HKers read Japanese magazines, listen to J-pop, watch Anime, movies & Jap shows, wear Japanese fashions, follow the latest fads from Tokyo, etc... We even copied their work ethic, and emulated their likes/dislikes (eg. karaoke)

You should ask him what part of Canada he's from. If his hometown is Vancouver, you should slap him silly in the face (do it for me at least). ;) Afterall, we're Hongcouver...unless he's never been outside of his home since birth, there is simply no way he could be so stupid as to not know anything about HK. There's a HKer at every corner in Vancouver, so he would have to be an extreme introvert not to know one.

Hong Thai, HK's largest travel agency, started off with Thailand package tours, and has evolved into today's giant. Thailand is served by a multitude of carriers with a lot of cheap alternatives such as Thai Sky. Therefore, prices can still be kept low. However, mainland China is also a very cheap place to travel, especially in Guangdong province for short 3-day trips. Even a package tour to Shanghai/Hangzhou for 4-5 days is comparable to Thailand.

Dear HK forumers,

In 3 weeks I will fly from Fukuoka to Kuala Lumpur by Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong , and I have 20 hour ( overnight ) stopover so I want to know if any forumers in HK could show me around. I love nature very much, and I know that Lantau Island has many beautiful and scenic places. And I love eating too, I know that Hong Kong is very famous for its food so I want to know where in Hong Kong should I go to taste them

Regards

Exactly. For new Hong Kongers, do not stick to your hometown's lifestyle in a stubborn fashion. This might make your life less enjoyable. This is a problem of some North Americans living in Hong Kong.

It is up to you whether to stay in North America, or to live in Hong Kong. I have to admit that in general, the business culture in Hong Kong could be somewhat stressful for some North Americans. Be prepared for the hot and humid summer--- it IS always much less comfortable than +40 C at your hometown in the Midwest or the Prairies.

Personally I was impressed by the layout of the city--- looks dense and functional, transport system is generally more efficient, personal connections and generally good working culture.

I agree. Heat is a big problem, as are mosquitoes. I have 6 bites on one arm. The tropical climate really helps breed those things. Sometimes all the neon signage and the crushing crowds get to me... after a while it can get dizzying.

I'm not a true Hong Konger :)

Mosquitos bother me, but the heat doesn't, I actually think the Californian winters are too cold, lol, not intolerable, but I'd rather it be warmer.

me too too

Took you a while.

Anyway, me three, if I haven't already.
