Brighton on the south coast of England, is one of the UK's most lively, creative, cosmopolitan cities, it has a city population of 250,000 and it's urban area is home to almost 500,000 people, it has a very bohemian atmosphere and is a magnet for foreign students and tourists throughout the year.
There is an all year round calender of events including one of Europe's largest gay pride festivals in august, the Brighton festival which is Englands largest arts festival and runs for a month in may every year, the comedy festival in october, burning of the clocks parade in december, the streets of Brighton festival which includes all sorts of street arts/performers, the vintage car run, and sometimes the worlds biggest beach party occurs when Fatboy slim plays on the beach (crowds of 250,000 were seen in july 2002), there is more but I won't go on.
some Brighton facts:

Two universities (Brighton and Sussex Unis)
Home to the oldest commercial airport in the UK (which is soon to be expanded and recently renamed Brighton city airport)
Surrounded by the rolling hills of the South Downs
Surrounded by picturesque Sussex villages
It has the largest marina complex in Europe
An award-wining library (also up for the stirling prize this year)
Some of the finest Regency terraces and squares anywhere
England’s largest arts festival
One of Britain’s largest celebrations of diversity (Pride)
One of the finest examples of early Modernism (Embassy Court)
The most restaurants per-head in the UK outside London
A lively gay scene
A lively clubbing scene and music scene
A conference centre used by all major UK political parties
A nudist beach
The first public electric railway in the world (Volks railway built in 1883)
A grid pattern of grand tree lined avenues (Hove)
The biggest Frank Gehry project in the UK (soon hopefully)

And we are also just an hour away from London.

Anyway here are some pictures that I have selected to try and give you a feel for the city.

I was in Brighton & Hove earlier this year, early summer in June.

As an American travelling to the UK the things I remember most about Brighton & Hove are (although I didnt actually go into Hove, but supposedly B & H is the full name of the city)

1. The Cold, Rainy weather, and grey skies! A big suprise for my perceptions of a beachside city!

2. The suprisingly good food and Marijuana! nothing like some fish and sausage to fill you right up, not like the puny american hot dog crap!

3. The pervasive atmosphere and foot traffic, the central area is suprisingly dense, and the area from the station to the beach is very lively.

4. The varied style of architecture, unlike the ubiquitous victorian/ post war architecture of the rest of the UKs towns, youll definitley find buildings in Brighton that you wont see anywhere else in the Uk, the density is great too!

5. The absolutley wonderfull and untouched countryside on the approach to Birghton from the north on the "motorway", something youd be hard pressed to find outside a major city in the US.

:) Unfortunately you can get this type of weather anywhere in the UK at any time of year due to our temperate maritime climate. However it isn't always like that and there are plenty of days when the weather is hot and sunny. I visited Brighton in May and the first day was about 16C and very hard rain but by day three it was over 30C, clear skies and hot sun.

If you mean the Georgian style houses, you will find that in other UK towns although it is probably not as common as the Victorian style London, Bath, Bristol and Liverpool come to mind as other towns where you can find this type of architecture. Of course the Brighton Pavilion is unique.

Heya titeness glad to hear you made the trip to our fair city, sorry that it rained though, Brighton's much nicer when it's bright and sunny although hopefully it didn't rain all the time you were here did it?
If you come again I'd recommend you to venture into Hove as there's a great atmosphere there with it's grand tree lined streets and lovely victorian/regency architecture, Hove is the more sophisticated side to the city and acts more grown up to that of it's naughty neighbor Brighton!
Also if you have a partner there is nothing more romantic than a meal in one of the numerous restaurants in Hove and then a walk along the wide seafront promenade there, Ive had many successful dates in Hove! (even if it did rain on the odd occasion lol) :)

wow.. you certainly find a lot of old threads from the archives, patachou. I'm assuming these photos are self taken, so will move this to the Urban Forums section. If they are not, then the author of the thread (if he is still active at SSC) should properly credit them and pm me to move this one back to cityscapes.
