From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
At first in this Jakarta’s palaces complex there’s only one building, the Istana Negara. The Istana started to build in 1796, when Pieter Gerardus van Overstraten became a Governor General, and finish at Johannes Siberg era in 1804. The Istana actually is build for Dutch businessman, J A van Braam as his retreat residence. At that time the venue of the Istana which now known as Harmoni, is the most exclusive venue in New Batavia (Jakarta)

In 1820 this mansion is rented and then in 1821 sold to the Dutch Colonial Government. The government uses this building as the center of every government activities and the official residence of the Governor General when they have a business in Batavia. The Governor at that time is preferred to live in Istana Bogor, because the weather is not as hot as in Batavia. But sometimes they have to go to Batavisa, especially to attend the Hindia Council Meeting, every Wednesday.

The Van Braam’s mansion is chosen because Istana Daendels (now Departemen Keuangan) in Lapangan Banteng (formerly known as waterloo) not finish yet. But after the Daendles finish, that building is just used for the government office.

In the Colonial era, a few important events happened in this building that has an official name, Hotel van den Gouverneur-Generaal. For example, this building is witnessed the Governor Graaf van den Bosch declared the cultuur stelsel system. And then, the ratification ceremony of the Lingarjati Treaty on March 25, 1947.

At the beginning this 3.375 m2 with Greek architecture building has two stories. But in 1848, the upper floor in demolish, and the lower floor is rebuild bigger for making more formal impression. Now the building is still the same.

Because this palace start to feel to crowded, with the instruction of J.W. van Lansberge in 1873, new palace was build in the complex, which known as Istana Gambir. The new palace in the beginning of Republic Indonesia’s independence has witnessed the ratification ceremony of claiming declaration of Independence of Indonesia from Dutch Colonial in 1949.

In that sentimental ceremony the Dutch Royal flag is changed with Indonesian Red and White flag. Hundred thousands crowd in tears when the flag rise into the sky. When the flag is reach the top, all the tears become new spirit. They all yelling “Merdeka! Merdeka!”. Since that moment, Istana Gambir known as Istana Merdeka.

One day after the ceremony, President Soekarno and his family arrive from Jogja and for the first time stay at Istana Merdeka. The first Independence Day annual ceremony first hailed in the Istana Meredeka in 1950.

Since the Dutch Colonial, Japanese Invasion and Indonesian Republic, more than 20 head of state and government alreay use the Istana Merdeka as the official residence and central of all government activities.

As the central of the state’s activities, now the Istana Negara is the venue for hailing the official state’s event, such as the Independence Day ceremony, welcoming the state’s guests, receiving the Letter of Credence from foreign ambassadors, installation of ministers, ambassadors, the opening of national meeting, national and international congress and official state’s banquet.

The Istana Merdeka has a several rooms such as, First Chamber, Residential Chamber, Guest Room, Banquet Room, Reception Hall, Regalia Room, Office, Bed Chamber, Living Room, and Kitchen.

After Soekarno, the presidents no longer use the Istana as the official residence but only use for the office until Presiden Abdurrahman Wahid and Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

I've been there!! When i met SBY in a class trip. Its a beautiful palace, it has the biggest rugs i've seen, the biggest chandliers, huge columns, artistic detail on the walls, etc...

EDIT: Oh, wait...i think i went to Istana Negara, not Istana Merdeka. I dont really remember, which is a shame.

Museum Nasional building is nice too.

When I was a kid I used to live on Jl Tanah Abang 3 and we had a house constructed during colonial years. So, it's a hundred year kind of building. The house was really nice with high ceiling, thick wall, huge windows, marble (real one) tile....
Too bad soon after my grandpa died someone forced us to sell it. They destroyed it and build an ugly office building. Really ugly.

I don't think so. However the mosque is open for public, with very2 tight security for sure --tighter than entering to an airplane.

It seems that only governmental monuments get the restoration they need. The small cultural heritage seems rather to be ignored. Or am I wrong?

Eh...When we entered the Istana, security wasnt as tight as i expected. Only like 2 guards at the first post and we had to go through a metal detector. Then before entering the Istana, we had to go through another metal detector with like 3 guards. I was expecting more security personel...and with better weapons. These guys only had small handguns.

tight security to enter the mosque, which just few meters beside the Istana, is only for Friday prayer due to number of people entering the complex. During the other day on the week it is just normal checking.

it seems so. There was an area just across pasar senen where there used to be a complex of chinese style house-shops. In early '90s a hotel was constructed and from hundred of those shops only 10 or something are left today.

Istana Negara Kebanjiran
