View Full Version : MARINA BAY (skyline, waterfront pics)
RafflesCity October 15th, 2005, 01:07 PM A lot of excitement has been generated over the future developments planned for the area, which is now already a popular spot with its waterfront and views of the skyline.
So how about some pics all around the bay?!
Anyway here are some ideas of the future development:

What a pity ! It reminds me that poor old France transatlantic ship (also known as "Norway" after it was bought over) is rotting at Port Klang in Malaysia... Really a beautiful vessel... More than 300m long. I should go there to take some pics of it some day.

Norway is in Malaysia?????????????
That is one of the great ocean liners of the past, almost the same league as the France.
Is it that one??????
Anywas, I like the most recent rendering of the new skyline!
Pengui October 17th, 2005, 07:29 AM Norway is actually the same ship :-)
The France was bought over in 1974 (?) by a norwegian cruise company. They renamed it and added a superstructure at the top. It stopped operating in 2003 after a boiler accident and was brought to Port Klang, where there were plans to sell it and transform it in a floating hotel-casino or to scrap it. But it seems the plans were abandonned so it should still be there. Maybe some of our malaysian forumers would have some ideas about the fate of the ship ?
Hmmm... Sorry for the off-topic ^ ^
Cliff October 17th, 2005, 03:27 PM Oooooooooo..I use to think they were sister ships, like Titanic and Olympic.
Did you know that the Jhare Viking(world's largest ship) was reparied in Singapore? The most amazing thing is that it could fit in Keppel Hrbour, when it can't even pass through the English Channel when fully laden.
off topic.:D
Pengui October 18th, 2005, 03:29 AM Is this a tanker ? Sorry I didn't buy the Guiness Book of Records yet... I know I should :-p Right now I suppose the world's largest cruise ship is newly built Queen Mary II ?
Mr.ASAP October 18th, 2005, 05:17 PM here is one :) can't wait for the Sail to go up to ''accompany'' the ORQ if not the skylines look a little weird :)
[IMG]http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/6889/img19630ve.jpg/IMG]
about the Oil tanker yes there was one that was repaired in Singapore...........was in the Guiness book of records 1998 that i read that article from ......rather large ship :)
Þróndeimr October 18th, 2005, 06:54 PM Yes, the "SS Norway" is in Malaysia (Image (http://home.online.no/~hahaakon/images/SSNorway8.jpg) | 315.6m long/ 33,8m wide/2032 passangers). There was a fire on the ship in may 2003, which caused some demage. The owner Norwegian Cruise Line has not announced any planns for the ship yet as far as i can tell.
Anyway, Singapore skyline will be so unique and amazing when The Sail and all the other buildings around Marina Bay is completed. :okay:

RafflesCity October 31st, 2005, 05:24 PM it will look so much better once they complete that golf course (the brown patch now looks like an eyesore), and the gardens and IRs
another perspective, with the Esplanade Theatres:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v133/RafflesCity/warmemorialpark.jpg
aloyteo November 1st, 2005, 02:41 AM huh you mean the entire brown patch is the golf course! such a waste of land! count the total number of golf courses in singapore and no one will think singapore lacks land! i always thought marina east is a reserve site for future expansion of the city, perhaps many years after the marina bay downtown is completed...
hyacinthus November 1st, 2005, 04:17 AM Don't think that is a waste.
We shouldn't think of building buildings on every possible piece of land all the time. I like the idea of a golf course but felt this course is too flat (except for windy conditions and water element) to be challenging for international golf tournaments. Night golfing, the Singapore Flyer and Marina Bay reservoir will create a different scene in future when we take photos from this angle again. It'll be lovely. :)
Saw floodlights are already being installed on the course. Wonder when are they building the clubhouse? Hoping to see some nice designs which differ from our current golf clubhouses which look about the same from each other. so boring.

JoSin November 17th, 2005, 12:13 PM yah...but the cold in Europe at this time of year is really no joke (especially for us SE Asians)...:D
Winter in Europe is not as harsh as in other places like America or Northern Asia. Take for instance London and paris are considered very far north, but there are seldom snow there. the temperatures hover around 1-10c. But in places like US, the temperatures are always below 0c , more unbearable singaporeans to take it. Haha......
RafflesCity November 25th, 2005, 05:43 PM yup...but London in January/Feb was cold enough for me!

RafflesCity November 25th, 2005, 05:59 PM :O
for boatsmaybe its the shape....as for water melons maybe its because it has a lot of water in its fibres (with a lot of air bubbles perhaps), hence making it overall less dense than the water outside, hence it floats :P

Have a ball at Marina Bay
29 Dec 05
http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg/mnt/media/image/launched/2005-12-29/3ps.jpg
THIS Saturday, Marina Bay will be dotted with about 2,500 of these balls, one of which is being lowered carefully into position by production assistant Mohamad Fazil Sulaiman. Each ball is attached by a 2mm-thick line to a weight to anchor the sphere and prevent it from being swept away by the currents.
These plastic balls will form a backdrop for a display of lights and fireworks, accompanied by music, to usher in the New Year.
About 1,000 people from all walks of life have written their wishes for the new year onto the orbs. An intricate system of lights placed all around the bay will start lighting up the area from 8pm. Some of these lights will merge with a nine-minute fireworks display at midnight.
While waiting for the countdown, visitors can watch performances at the Esplanade's outdoor theatre from 7pm. There will also be other events at the site of the annual River Hongbao event.

JoSin December 29th, 2005, 08:14 AM do you know how does boats float? i sounded stupid to be asking that... but seriously how? and why watermelon floats too?
Well it is because there are lots of air squeezed in some parts of the boat. So as the density of air is lighter than water, no matter how heavy the boat is, it still floats. Am i correct?? :dunno:
RafflesCity March 14th, 2006, 01:55 PM Spins, slides and speed on Marina Bay thrill ride
14 Mar 06
By Krist Boo
IT'S wet, it's wild and it kicks off tomorrow.
http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg/mnt/media/image/launched/2006-03-14/ST_3692614_13_03_2006.jpg
A new, white-knuckle boat ride featuring 270-degree spins, side slides, powerbrake stops and wild fishtails - a stunt imitating the motion of a fish flapping its tail - will churn up the normally placid waters of Marina Bay.
The so-called jet boat - 9m long and fire engine red with a shark painted on its bow, can hit speeds of up to 65kmh and carry up to 23 passengers.
It will take customers on a mad dash from the Merlion Park to near the East Coast Parkway and back, a round trip lasting 45 minutes.
Setting off at hourly intervals from 9am to 6pm, Tuesday to Sunday, the ride will cost adults $50 and children $35. Tickets can be bought at the Merlion Park.
For safety, the boat will always keep a 60m to 200m distance from other water users, such as kayaks and canoes.
Jet boats have been operating in Sydney Harbour for six years and have an accident-free record, said Singapore Jet Boats' managing director, Mr Eric Linker.
The new ride is a $1 million joint venture between Singapore Jet Boats and the largest Australian jet boating operator, Oz Jet Boating.
redstone March 14th, 2006, 02:21 PM I though in a few weeks the Bay would be dammed, or rather, barraged up??? :dunno:
JoSin March 14th, 2006, 02:41 PM i was thinking of that too. How would the boat be able to cross over to east coast area?
RafflesCity March 14th, 2006, 02:49 PM hmmm...gd question...but maybe the dam wont close so soon...
I wonder when they will stop using the usual tongkangs in the river as well..
hyacinthus March 14th, 2006, 03:55 PM cos everyone made the wrong assumption.
Remember the controlled waterway in URA's model? It allows small boats to pass through the barrage. As for the tongkang, they will go away to prevent water pollution in the reservoir.
redstone March 14th, 2006, 04:15 PM Retrofit the tongkangs!
JediAlf March 15th, 2006, 06:07 AM I though in a few weeks the Bay would be dammed, or rather, barraged up??? :dunno:
yes they do dam up. Boats would be still left in the Marina Bay. All commerical bumboats would have to be out of this area except water taxi, tourist boats etc..
There is a boat hoist which lift the boat from sea to marina bay as shown in the picture.
http://www.pub.gov.sg/Marina/images/const.gif
JediAlf March 15th, 2006, 06:20 AM So much news about this area
Firstly, it has been bustled with construction of underground service tunnels, new skyscrapers and new high rise apartment. Construction of Marina Barrage, Marina Cruise Centre & Ferry Terminal.
Extension of Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway connecting to AYE, following the coast of Marina Bay. Beautiful and unique twisted steels of bridge.
Extension of Circle Line to Marina Bay towards Chinatown.
No doubt, all of us will be dumbfounded and speechless as we stand at one of pods at the bridge, snapping photos of new skyline...
RafflesCity March 15th, 2006, 06:54 AM indeed...with all the construction going on, they will have to coordinate the movement of materials such that it doesnt congest the city

May I recommend some software to resize your images:
Irfanview http://www.irfanview.com
XnView http://www.xnview.com
Both are simple, light and nice, and most importantly freeware ;-)
They will also allow you to apply some quick improvements on your pics such as sharpening and color balancing, plus, you can use them to quickly browse through your photographs :-)
You can try both and keep the one you prefer or if you are undecided on which one is the best, do like me and use both depending on the mood ;-)

The problem is, when you are not at marina bay. I was at Tanjong pagar a few days ago, I wanted to talk pictures of the buildings around there but there was alot of pedestrians, so I won't dare to take out my camera and take photos incase they thought I was taking of them or they think i'm crazy
Pengui April 16th, 2007, 04:59 PM LOL! For me I know I'm crazy so I don't mind taking the pics :-p Free yourself, raptorsuperb!!! ^ ^ =< :°)

redstone April 17th, 2007, 06:15 PM Act blur? How sia!!
You shoot, if anyone stares at you, pretend you saw nothing, point camera somewhere else, eg to some object or some nice scenery somewhere.
eyetoeye April 17th, 2007, 06:35 PM Back when i was still using my old Nikon i could sidestep that problem by using the twisting screen to take pictures secretly, like with the camera on my waist or inside a bag. Now i'm using a DSLR that's no longer possible. It takes time getting used to.

RafflesCity July 26th, 2007, 02:52 AM Nightly show to set Marina Bay abuzz
26 Jul 07
A spectacular sound, lights and water show planned to liven up the Bay's night scene
IT IS December 2009 and night has fallen over Marina Bay.
The newly opened integrated resort is bustling while the Singapore Flyer observation wheel soars in the distance.
Against this skyline, the waterfront is abuzz with a show of sound, lights and water that rivals the dancing fountains in Las Vegas and Hong Kong's A Symphony Of Lights.
It is a nightly show the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) has envisioned for the bay area and this week, it took the first step in making the vision a reality.
It is asking qualified companies and teams to indicate their interest in the project and on Tuesday, sketched the requirements for it in an online posting.
The URA's brief stated that the show should be a 'must-see'' comparable to other successful outdoor multimedia shows.
Buildings along the waterfront could be lit up, like those in Hong Kong. Bridges in the area such as the Benjamin Sheares Bridge could be included in the show.
Fountains and water jets, like those in Las Vegas, as well as lasers and fireworks may be added to achieve the 'wow' effect.
The Las Vegas fountains span a 400m-wide lake fronting Bellagio Hotel and Casino. These musical fountains spout water that dance in rhythm to such songs as Gene Kelly's Singin' In The Rain and Frank Sinatra's Fly Me To The Moon.
The US$40 million (S$60 million) show lasts five to 10 minutes, and was featured in the remake of the movie Ocean's Eleven.
Although the URA has yet to specify a site for the show, it said people should be able to see it from the promenade, rooftops and sky gardens.
It would be free for the public but is estimated to cost up to $18 million to produce.
The show is one of two projects the URA believes will liven up the night scene at the bay.
The other is the floating stage built for this year's National Day Parade and earmarked for live music and theatre performances.
These attractions will embed Marina Bay 'as a lively and vibrant area in the minds and hearts of Singaporeans and visitors', the URA told The Straits Times yesterday.
'They will also contribute in creating more night-time buzz that can make Singapore an attractive 24/7 city to live, work and play in.'
The bay is Singapore's second site for a major outdoor multimedia show. Sentosa opened its $30 million Songs Of The Sea in March, billed as the world's first permanent show set in the sea. The pyrotechnics, lasers and 40m-high water jets have drawn more than 400,000 visitors.
Although the show by the bay follows what others abroad have done, Mr Robert Khoo, chief executive of the National Association of Travel Agents Singapore, is confident of its appeal.
'It's not easy to find something original or Singaporean. No harm in copying.
'In any case, the view and experience would be different,'' he said.

spikeshamz April 11th, 2009, 10:37 AM To have a fountain jet in the middle of singapore river like the jet in geneve or dubai would certainnly attract more locals and foreigners to the area. to have an icon for the bay, the jets need to be as high as 100 m minimum then that can cause a comosion. An attraction not to be wasted.

wonuraimo May 1st, 2009, 11:25 PM ^^
Not too sure abt the marina bay projects since the area's pretty chaotic right now. You might wanna visit Orchard Road, as there are 2 new malls, ION and OrchardCentral, that are scheduled to be open by then. Orchard Road also underwent a facelift recently, so you might wanna check that out. If you really want to stick to the bay view, I would suggest visiting the marina barrage.
Pengui May 4th, 2009, 03:04 PM I thought Marina Barrage was a bit boring... Not a bad location for a picnic, though :-)
Most parts of Marina Bay will still be under construction by October I think, but you can always check out the Esplanade, cross the bridge and pay a visit to the Merlion ;-)
RafflesCity May 4th, 2009, 03:13 PM The Esplanade Theatre waterfront is where most of the action is at, as well as the One Fullerton waterfront, all fronting the bay. There is a new outdoor cafe that has also opened on the Esplanade's rooftop.
This list gives a rundown of the upcoming projects (The first 14 are in the Marina Bay area)

kkwok January 30th, 2010, 02:34 AM Las Vegas Sands Macau Gaming License May Be in Jeopardy
Oct - 05 | By: a2zMacau
A District Court judge Wednesday set back efforts by casino operator Sheldon Adelson to keep sealed pretrial depositions and other business information that his attorneys said could threaten the billionaire’s growing Chinese operations.
Rusty Hardin and Sam Lionel, attorneys for the Las Vegas Sands Corp., argued during a hearing in a case filed more than 18 months ago that releasing the sealed information could put the casino operator’s Macau gaming license in jeopardy.
The depositions and other information were provided by the casino owner and his executives in response to three separate lawsuits working their way through state and federal courts in Las Vegas. All three cases involve contract disputes with allegations that Adelson reneged on promises to compensate individuals for their help in Adelson’s 2002 acquisition of a lucrative Macau casino concession.
Adelson was the first American to open a gaming facility in China, recouping his entire $265 million investment in the Sands Macau one year after it opened in 2004.
Although most of the information is still under seal, plaintiffs in a lawsuit filed against the Sands by three businesspeople who claim they helped Adelson obtain his license to operate in Macau, are trying to get the information unsealed for their case.
Wednesday’s ruling followed an August decision by Bonnie Bulla, the discovery commissioner in the case filed against the Sands by Clive Jones, Darryl Turok and Cliff Cheong, to allow most of the evidence gathered in the case, including a video deposition of Adelson, to remain confidential.
She ruled then that the evidence could be kept confidential despite repeated failures by Adelson’s attorneys to prove how the information could harm the billionaire and his businesses if it was made public.
“The burden (to prove harm) was allowed to shift impermissibly to the plaintiff in this case,” Judge Kenneth Cory ruled.
Defendants seeking to keep pretrial evidence secret normally must prove they would be irreparably harmed by the release of such information.
The case will now be returned to Bulla’s courtroom, where Adelson’s legal team will get a third chance to argue for keeping the casino owner’s deposition and those of many current and former Sands executives secret.
“It’s been extraordinarily difficult. There are former executives who we have a right, even an obligation to talk to, who won’t talk to us. … It (secrecy and confidentiality of records) has been pervasive, literally affecting every aspect of the case,” plaintiff’s attorney Don Campbell said.
In an ironic twist, some of the same information being sought in the Jones-Turok-Cheong case has already seeped out in a related case, filed by Richard Suen and Round Square Co. and set for trial in February. Suen is a Hong Kong businessman and longtime friend of Adelson’s brother, Lenny Adelson. Suen approached the casino operator’s brother about applying for a Macau casino concession. Suen also has deep ties to high-ranking officials within the Chinese government. He claims in his case that he introduced Adelson and other Sands executives to the very officials who would later figure prominently in the company’s acquisition of a Macau gaming concession.
The case was filed in October 2004 and the casino company tried to keep information from it out of the public eye as well. Some confidential information, however, was accidentally made public earlier this year by Adelson’s own attorneys.
The filings accidentally unsealed in the Suen case have since been resealed, although some information did leak out in news reports.
The Business Press, a sister publication of the Review-Journal, reported that Las Vegas Sands President Bill Weidner confirmed in his deposition that he and Adelson were summoned to Beijing at the behest of top Chinese communist leaders in 2001. The leaders, including China’s then-Vice Premier Qian Qichen and former Beijing Mayor Liu Qi, learned of Adelson’s longtime connections to the Republican Party. They also knew he coveted a Macau concession.
According to court records in the Suen case, Adelson was asked to use his connections to help kill legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives that would have potentially prevented China from winning its bid to host the upcoming 2008 Olympics.
According to depositions taken in the Suen case, Adelson called upon then-House Majority Leader Tom DeLay in 2001 to stall legislation sponsored by California Democrat Tom Lantos to keep the U.S. Olympic Committee from voting for China’s bid. The legislation was part of an American response to China’s holding 24 members of the U.S. military for 11 days after their surveillance plane crashed on Chinese territory earlier that year.
Also according to testimony taken in the Suen case, DeLay killed the Lantos legislation and Adelson’s Washington public relations firm, Patton Boggs, was instructed by Weidner to “suggest” to the Chinese Embassy that Adelson was “involved in the process” that eventually defeated the bill.
Macau’s casino patriarch, Stanley Ho, may have confirmed the importance of Adelson’s assistance to the Chinese government when he told a Las Vegas Sands executive vice president that, “by the way, that Olympic thing, I think you guys won the bid … that’s what I hear back from my guys in Beijing,” according to a deposition from Sands executive Brad Stone that was made public in the Suen case.
Adelson eventually won his bid in 2002 despite a series of unrelated snafus, including that Las Vegas Sands initially partnered with a company that was based in Taiwan, China’s political nemesis.
Instead of being rejected for political reasons, the gaming company was at the last minute “married” by Macau’s leader to Galaxy Entertainment Group, according to Weidner’s testimony, and the Taiwanese company’s own bid was rejected. Nevada gaming regulators, however, nixed the Galaxy combination after the Hong Kong company repeatedly failed to show regulators their ownership records.
Then, Macau officials, specifically Chief Executive Edmund Ho, abruptly altered the island’s gaming law to allow for three subconcessions in addition to three original concessions, creating an extra-legal environment that allowed the Las Vegas Sands to operate as an independent subconcession holder, a method employed specifically to accommodate the Las Vegas operator and no other company, according to legal expert James Tong, a witness in the Suen case.
Today, the Las Vegas company has the largest market share of any gaming operator in the world. In 2001, Las Vegas Sands was only the fifth-largest casino operator. Adelson has also become the third-richest man in America, according to Forbes magazine, due mostly to his successful efforts in Asia.
For Campbell, Adelson’s riches may be the only obstacle that keeps his clients from winning their fight, and what keeps the public from scutinizing further Adelson’s efforts in Macau.
“It’s always a concern when someone has unlimited resources to prolong litigation,” the attorney said.
When asked Wednesday whether Adelson’s efforts on behalf of the Chinese government to influence U.S. politics would come to light in his own case, he said: “We’re not allowed to talk to you about it.”
Campbell’s case was set for trial in March. It was recently postponed to November 2008.

kkwok January 30th, 2010, 02:35 AM The Nevada Gaming Control Board – Clean it Up or Disband It!
By admin | March 6, 2007
The Nevada Gaming Control Board is little more than a training ground for future casino employees. The last two chairmen crossed the line and went to work for the casino industry after their “public service” ended. Excerpts from my recent column:
… What should be frightening and infuriating to Nevadans is that the outrageous activity by casinos is tolerated by the Nevada Gaming Control Board. If there was to be a vote for least effective public agency, the Gaming Control Board would win easily. It appears to be corrupt from top to bottom, operating as a de facto arm of the casino industry, instead of protecting the public from casino wrongdoing. The Gaming Control Board is little more than a training ground for future casino employees. The last two chairmen crossed the line and went to work for the casino industry after their “public service” ended. Will present Chairman Dennis Neilander be far behind? The current Board is a see-no-evil, hear-no-evil trio of two undistinguished career bureaucrats and a casino-industry attorney who cater to every whim of the casino bosses, and do little or nothing to protect the public.
Publicized cases of casino cheating underscore the mentality of the Board. The Venetian was caught rigging drawings. The Board fined it a million dollars, which is a petty slap on the wrist for the Venetian. The casino’s license should have been suspended for at least thirty days, the casino closed during that time, and the Venetian ordered to pay its employees during the closure. The crooked employees should have been referred to the District Attorney’s Office for criminal prosecution. Not only was that not done, the Board didn’t even see fit to revoke the privileged licenses of the crooks. To its credit, the Venetian fired all four scoundrels involved in the sordid affair. But at least three subsequently went to work in executive positions at other casinos, one right here in Las Vegas.
In a more recent case, the Golden Nugget attempted to cheat a patron who won $48,600 on a sports bet. The Golden Nugget said it simply would not pay the winner, though it would refund the $2700 bet. The Gaming Control Board ordered the Golden Nugget to pay the victim, but assessed an absurdly small monetary penalty of less than $30,000. Again, no casino employee was prosecuted for trying to cheat a patron, and the fine, actually imposed for failure to notify the Board of a “patron dispute,” was so small as to be ridiculous. It is comical to call an outright attempt to cheat a patron a “patron dispute.” It should have been called what it was, an attempt to cheat a patron.
There are many cases of corrupt Gaming Control Board agents threatening winning casino patrons with phony charges and arrests in attempts to extort the patrons to give back to the casino their honest, legal winnings. The Board has never publicly disclosed if these corrupt agents have been fired, prosecuted, or even disciplined.
The Board had to be sued before it agreed to take action to stop casino cheating at blackjack, through a computerized table that uses marked cards. Incredibly, the Board has permitted the continued use of the marked cards, but has made it less easy, though not impossible, for casinos to use the device to cheat patrons. The Board refuses to publicly disclose a copy of the anti-cheating orders it claims to have issued. Without the embarrassment of being sued for refusing to do its job, the Board would likely have continued to do nothing while the cheating went on unabated.Unfortunately, the Board has the ability to operate largely in secret. A few ill-conceived statutes allow it more secrecy than a regular police department. Most of its files are not considered public records, and are not available for public inspection. Most of its business is conducted via secret deals with casino bosses. Of course, the secret sweetheart-deal making works to the advantage of the Board, its employees and the casino bosses, and to the detriment of the public.
The present Gaming Control Board is an out-of-control, corrupt government agency operating in virtual secrecy. Legislation is needed to force it to open its files and records to the sunshine of public scrutiny. If after public examination of its practices, it is determined to unsalvageable, it should be disbanded, its employees fired from the public payroll.
Nevada does not need another cheating scandal or another abuse-of-patrons scandal in its casinos. There have been far too many already, with no meaningful action ever taken against the wrongdoers. Nevada is competing with many other gaming and vacation destinations. The other states take casino cheating and other wrongdoing seriously. Nevada needs to start doing the same, before it is too late. Once we get a national or worldwide reputation for not having legitimate, effective government oversight of casinos, many of the tourists — the lifeblood of our economy — will stop taking the risk of visiting Nevada.

JediAlf February 1st, 2010, 04:40 PM Update:
1) Marina Wharf is gone. Construction of MCE in this section has begun...
2) New Shenton Way bus park is completed - not sure if this is actually for SBS Transit / SMRT buses as current Shenton Way bus terminal is under the ECP.
3) New bridges at IR are fast completing with vehicular bridge covered with road tars.

I believe the new one is to serve as a replacement for the existing bus terminal under ECP? Would part of the viaduct be torn down or realigned with the MCE as a result?
