A few pics I too in Dar es Salaam, the largest city (not the capitcal) of Tanzania this summer.

Dar es Salaam is a safe and pleasant city, for African standards at least. At least I found it a pretty nice town, and I understand it's a lot better than, for example, Nairobi, Lusaka or Harare. It was also a lot more developed than I expected: there's even a small highrise boom going on! And although people are certainly not rich, I didn't see any extreme poverty in the city....in contrast to rural areas, where there certainly is (although a lot less than in Malawi, which I also visited...).

1. A large road along the city centre. On the left a church from German colonial times, and some highrises U/C in the background.

2. A nice highrise. Notice the cars: all Toyota's. This brand has an incredibly high market share in the country.

3. City Centre.

4. Samora Avenue, the main street through the old parts of the city centre. Along and around this crowded street you can find some old colonial buildings. This is certainly the nicest part of town, with a lot of markets, shops, restaurants, etc.

5. Samora Ave.

6. Samora Ave. Public transport consitst only of these minibuses. There are plans for a Rapid Bus Transit system though, comparable to the ones in Curitiba and Bologa.

7. The indian area, although there are not a lot indians around anymore. Nowadays it is mostly inhabitated with locals, a lot of them being muslum. There are also a lot of mosques around, which I didn't photograph because of possible anti-western sympathies (not that I noticed any, though... all people were generally very friendly and welcoming, wether they were muslim or christian...).

8. View from our hotel towards the city centre...
http://www.xs4all.nl/~davidee/Afrika/DAR08.jpg

9. ...and the other side....
http://www.xs4all.nl/~davidee/Afrika/DAR09.jpg

10....where residential complexes were mushrooming (notice the way the upper floor is supported by wooden sticks...)
http://www.xs4all.nl/~davidee/Afrika/DAR10.jpg

11. Dar is situated along a bay which you can cross by a ferry.
http://www.xs4all.nl/~davidee/Afrika/DAR06.jpg

12. View of the city centre from the ferry.
http://www.xs4all.nl/~davidee/Afrika/DAR01.jpg

13. On the other side of the bay you'll find some more poverty. Notice the "subtle" advertisement... :clown: Celtel is the largest mobile provider of the country. Almost everyone seems to have a mobile phone, which is interesting as the country lacks a reliable traditional phone system. Seems like Africa is skipping the phase of traditional phones and goes directly into the mobile era.

14. Arriving at the other side of the bay.
http://www.xs4all.nl/~davidee/Afrika/DAR17.jpg

15. Alhtough it is a pretty town, Dar is hot, smoggy, chaotic and humid. Fortunately you can always escape to the beaches on the north side of town...
http://www.xs4all.nl/~davidee/Afrika/DAR14.jpg

16. ...where, of course, Coca-Cola is sold, just like about every place in Africa.

Hope you enjoyed it... I'll post some more African threads around SSC in the next couple of days.

Great pics os Dar Es Salaam, and japanese cars are certainly in vogue in africa at the moment. The economy of Tanzania is certainly booming, like many african coutries right now.

Oh hell yes. These are excellent. Very rare that we have the opportunity to see original, high-quality, personal and detailed, and non-googled photos of a place like this. Thanks for these.

Great pics!

Just out of curiosity, what brings you to Dar es Salaam?

Thanks for the good reviews. Too bad African cities don't get much exposure on SSC, while there are some pretty interesting cities in the continent.

Just out of curiosity, what brings you to Dar es Salaam?

A holiday, where I visited Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia. Not just the national parks and tourist safaris, but also cities and rural areas. I was inspired for this by my father, who worked as a teachers and researcher in Malawi and Zambia for almost ten years.

Excellent photos, it looks like a pretty nice city.

Seems like Africa is skipping the phase of traditional phones and goes directly into the mobile era.
This makes so much sense though, if they've not allready got an established landline phone network then there's not much point in installing one. For it to be effective a traditional network of landlines has to be quite extensive and you really need to build it all at once otherwise there's not a huge ammount of point. Whereas with mobile phones you can just start with a small network, say just the city and you just put up new masts as and when you get the money to expand the network to other areas, it's gotta be cheaper then laying loads of cables.

awesome. great pics. you certainly get around. thanks for sharing.

when i went to Hungary in 1996, i remember there was a similar situation with mobile phones outnumbering landlines.

Nice pics, i've seen a few Zanzibar pics before but never Dar-es-Salaam!

Dar es Salaam is a safe and pleasant city, for African standards at least. At least I found it a pretty nice town, and I understand it's a lot better than, for example, Nairobi, Lusaka or Harare.

It's a shame about the political and economic situation in Zimbabwe, Harare has one of the best skylines of any African city, I heard it was a pretty nice place until the problems of the past few years :(
