A few pics I too in Dar es Salaam, the largest city (not the capitcal) of Tanzania this summer.
Dar es Salaam is a safe and pleasant city, for African standards at least. At least I found it a pretty nice town, and I understand it's a lot better than, for example, Nairobi, Lusaka or Harare. It was also a lot more developed than I expected: there's even a small highrise boom going on! And although people are certainly not rich, I didn't see any extreme poverty in the city....in contrast to rural areas, where there certainly is (although a lot less than in Malawi, which I also visited...).
1. A large road along the city centre. On the left a church from German colonial times, and some highrises U/C in the background.

2. A nice highrise. Notice the cars: all Toyota's. This brand has an incredibly high market share in the country.

3. City Centre.

4. Samora Avenue, the main street through the old parts of the city centre. Along and around this crowded street you can find some old colonial buildings. This is certainly the nicest part of town, with a lot of markets, shops, restaurants, etc.

5. Samora Ave.

6. Samora Ave. Public transport consitst only of these minibuses. There are plans for a Rapid Bus Transit system though, comparable to the ones in Curitiba and Bologa.

7. The indian area, although there are not a lot indians around anymore. Nowadays it is mostly inhabitated with locals, a lot of them being muslum. There are also a lot of mosques around, which I didn't photograph because of possible anti-western sympathies (not that I noticed any, though... all people were generally very friendly and welcoming, wether they were muslim or christian...).

8. View from our hotel towards the city centre...

9. ...and the other side....

10....where residential complexes were mushrooming (notice the way the upper floor is supported by wooden sticks...)

11. Dar is situated along a bay which you can cross by a ferry.

12. View of the city centre from the ferry.

13. On the other side of the bay you'll find some more poverty. Notice the "subtle" advertisement... :clown: Celtel is the largest mobile provider of the country. Almost everyone seems to have a mobile phone, which is interesting as the country lacks a reliable traditional phone system. Seems like Africa is skipping the phase of traditional phones and goes directly into the mobile era.

14. Arriving at the other side of the bay.

15. Alhtough it is a pretty town, Dar is hot, smoggy, chaotic and humid. Fortunately you can always escape to the beaches on the north side of town...
http://www.xs4all.nl/~davidee/Afrika/DAR14.jpg
16. ...where, of course, Coca-Cola is sold, just like about every place in Africa.

Hope you enjoyed it... I'll post some more African threads around SSC in the next couple of days.
