Yes, that's true. But the 30.000 are from the historical centre and not from the whole city.

The city of Bruges has exactly 118.500 inhabitants. With +/- 30.000 in the historical centre.
The rest lives in the modern city outside of the centre. Which now makes some sort of centre on its own.

Extremely beautiful town :) I've been in Brugge almost 6 years ago, though I remember its atmosphere - beautiful architecture, all the city centre looks great! Canals are also great :)

What an extraordinary place.

I've been there several times, I 've even stayed in Damme, but I really haven't run into much of the modern center where 75% of the population is reputed to be living. There is some gentle aesthetic sprawl to the south east, south and west, but it's nothing like Gent for example, which is a big city with a small historic center. You can reach Brugge on some country roads without seeing a real street until you've reached the canal surrounding the historical center.

That's what I call preservation!

Been here once and truely enjoyed it. Definetely the most beautiful city in Belgium!!

Probably the best preserved medieval town in Western Europe (there will be a few French and German ones to argue it, but its certainly amongst the contenders) I can't wait to return, shame I only had a couple of hours the first time.
