PORT VELL

In 1988, the Port of Barcelona plans its definitive opening-up to the sea. It will be carried out in the Port Vell (Old Port).

http://www.apb.es/wps/wcm/connect/154b488049297256993db973eb65d2bd/03.portvell.01.jpg?MOD=AJPERES

The Port Vell, which was turned into an obsolete port area for the traditional uses, is turned in 1995 into a space of 55.6 hectares unique in Europe, a port integrated into the heart of Barcelona.
The Port Vell represents an unique attraction for the city, the citizens and the enterprises. Every year is visited by more than 16 million and the success of any event held in this place is guaranteed

Rambla de Mar

It’s the most emblematic image of the Port Vell. The architecture and the urban furniture turn this Rambla into a singular walk by the sea. It is the natural continuation of the Rambles de Barcelona. Tourists, citizens of Barcelona, and the companies that film movies or advertisements, all of them benefit from this space.

These spaces are ideal for product launchs, shows or spectacular parades over the sea. Among other things there have been temporal activities as the Mostra de Vins i Caves de Catalunya (Wine and cava exhibition), the presentation of the Circuit de Montmeló Catalunya, the Port Vell artists, the Port de Nassos, the Squash National Trophy… It has many cultural and leisure posibilities as the Maremagnum, the Imax Port Vell and the Aquarium. The car park offers almost a thousand of parking spaces.

Cruisers

Barcelona is one of the world's most cosmopolitan cities. Its port is the gateway for over a million cruise passengers every year. The port leader in Europe

The Port of Barcelona has a total of 7 terminals exclusively for use by cruise traffic. Since January 2000, the terminal operator Creuers del Port de Barcelona, S.A. has provided a service to these terminals in co-operation with various departments of the Port of Barcelona involved in the cruise sector.

Terminal plus B+D
http://www.portic.net/creuers/mapas_terminales/plano_general.gif

Terminal A, moll Adossat

It is the first terminal to be built for cruise traffic in the Port of Barcelona. It is considered the second terminal in terms of capacity and operations, as its size allows up to 3,000 passengers to embark and disembark from ships

Terminal B, moll Adossat

As a response to the increase in passenger traffic, Creuers del Port de Barcelona, SA, the contractor at the terminal, has finished building a new maritime station designed to work with the world's largest ships, of 140,000 tonnes and 3,600 passengers.

The old terminal (3,000 m2) has been made into one measuring almost 7,000 m2, including the latest security, comfort, operations and image systems, and it is equipped with 2 fingers and 4 luggage conveyor belts.

North and South Terminals, moll Barcelona

These terminals are on the Moll de Barcelona quay, and are part of the World Trade Center, a business centre equipped with all types of services. Their proximity to the city centre enables tourists to walk to the Plaça Colom in just 5 minutes.

As well as the two terminals, which can deal with 2 medium-sized ships each, there is an additional mooring space on the eastern side of the quay that can be used by either the Nord or Sud terminal for their embarking and disembarking procedures

Terminal Port Vell

It is situated in the Maremàgnum complex. It is the smallest terminal and provides a service to ships with smaller capacities and lengths.
Because of the new trend towards building increasingly large ships, this terminal has not been used a great deal in recent years.

Terminal Sant Bertran

Located on the Moll de Sant Bertran quay, this terminal is basically equipped for ferry reception, and is sometimes used as a terminal for cruise ship passengers. It has all the necessary safety measures and it is equipped with all services.

The Port of Barcelona has direct connections with Genoa, Rome, Algiers-Oran, Majorca, Ibiza and Minorca.

I have been to Barcelona a few times and each time I go there I always find that something has changed, like most of Spain, there is a lot of construction going on. Its a progressive city and its because of this it attracts a lot of tourism. The port expansion along with the Airport expansion will mean the Barcelona will be very well serviced, attracting a lot of investment and jobs...

More cruises in Barcelona

Mickey's European cruise

Lake Buena Vista, Florida (AP) -- Mickey Mouse is going on a European vacation in the summer of 2007. Company officials announced Tuesday that Disney Cruise Line will sail to Italy, France and Spain from May to August 2007 as part of a larger strategy to "chart new waters."

The Disney Magic will offer eight alternating 10-night and 11-night Mediterranean cruises, departing from Barcelona, Spain, and stopping in eight European cities.

Company President Tom McAlpin says traveling through Europe can be daunting, especially with small children. He says a Disney cruise takes the guesswork out of what cities to hit, where to eat and what shows to see.

But analysts say the European expansion will have little affect on the cruise industry overall. Carnival and Royal Caribbean Cruises already operate in Europe with cruise lines that cater specifically to European vacationers.

Disney Magic Cruises From Spain Next Year

Disney Cruise Line announced Tuesday that it will offer cruises in Europe in the summer of 2007 on the Disney Magic, which normally is based at Port Canaveral.

The ship will offer cruises from Barcelona, Spain, with stops in Italy and France, home to Disneyland Resort Paris, which is partially owned by The Walt Disney Co., according to Local 6 News partner Florida Today.
In May 2007, the Disney Magic will sail a 14-day trans-Atlantic cruise from Port Canaveral to Barcelona. The Magic then will sail alternating 10- and 11-night cruises to eight ports of call in Italy and France. It will return in August 2007 to Port Canaveral with another trans-Atlantic cruise departing from Barcelona.

Voyager of the Seas to Make European Debut

In May 2006, the ship that revolutionized cruising will depart Miami for Barcelona, Spain, marking the 3,114-guest Voyager of the Seas' European debut. From May 27 to July 8, 2006, and again Sept. 9 through Nov. 11, 2006, Voyager of the Seas will offer seven-night Mediterranean sailings roundtrip from Barcelona, calling on Marseille and Villefranche (Nice), France, and Livorno (Florence/Pisa), Civitavecchia (Rome) and Naples, Italy.

Voyager of the Seas also will sail seven-night Mediterranean-Malta sailings July 15 through Sept. 2, 2006, making stops in Villefranche (Nice); Civitavecchia (Rome); Palermo (Sicily), Italy; Valletta, Malta; and Palma De Mallorca, Spain. In addition, guests on either itinerary have the option of extending their vacation with one of two cruisetour packages - a three-night tour to Madrid and Barcelona or a five-night tour to Seville, Madrid and Barcelona.

Voyager of the Seas remains one of the most innovative ships at sea. Introduced in 1999, Voyager was the first cruise ship to feature a rock-climbing wall, an ice-skating rink, an in-line skating track and the Royal Promenade, a horizontal atrium featuring shopping, dining and entertainment venues. Voyager of the Seas offers guests six restaurants and more than a dozen lounges and bars from which to choose, as well as a state-of-the-art theater, the Las Vegas-style Casino Royale, and the outstanding Adventure Ocean youth program.

I read somewhere that Southampton will overtake Barcelona as the nr 1 cruise port in europe this year, however the article said that Southampton were aiming for 1 million passengers and 300 port calls. Now Barcelona this year will handle somewhere in the region of 1.7 milllion passengers and around 800 port calls. How do they count?

There are no capacity figures released but they anticipate some 4 million TEUs by 2015, however if the current growth rate is sustained it will probably be more like 5-6 million. Considering the current port handle some 2,5 million TEUs and only operate att haft capacity, I think that when the port expansion is finished it could probably handle somewhere between 10 and 15 million TEUs.

The main cruise qay is also being expanded to accommodate up to 5 Gensis class cruisers at once (the largest that currently exists).

The quay now, with two of the five new cruise terminals finished, a third will be added by next year.

New bridge under construction linking the port and the airport
