The Jewish Museum Berlin (Jüdisches Museum Berlin) is a museum in Berlin covering two millennia of German Jewish history.

The Jewish Museum in Berlin was originally founded in Oranienburger Strasse in 1933. It was closed in 1938 by the state police. The idea to revive the museum was first voiced in 1971, and an "Association for a Jewish Museum" was founded in 1975. A Jewish department of the Berlin Museum was opened after the Berlin Museum first displayed an exhibition on Jewish history in Berlin in 1978. In 1999 the Jewish Museum Berlin was granted status as an independent institution. A building by Daniel Libeskind was finished in 1998 and officially opened in 2001; the foundation stone for the extension building to the Berlin Museum was laid in November 1992. It has now become a lively center for Jewish history and culture.

Libeskind's design created an open area enclosed by the internal walls of the museum, called the memory void for those affected by the Holocaust. Menashe Kadishman's 'Shalechet' ('Fallen leaves') installation filled this void with 10,000 coarsely made iron faces. Visitors are permitted to walk on the work. Doing so creates an almost 'industrial' noise, something with deep meaning.

The director of the museum is Professor W. Michael Blumenthal, who is originally from Berlin and was US Secretary of the Treasury under President Jimmy Carter.

It is very sad, and shows the atrocities that occurred during the war, it humbles me to think about what Jews went threw. It is wonderful in the emotions it conjures in me, 10!

The shape is very strange. It has only a sinuous corridor.

The groundplan has been interpreted in many different ways. Some see it as a lightning bolt striking the city of Berlin. Daniel Libeskind, the architect, likens it to a deconstructed star of David.

what does "EINSTEIN FUR ALLE"?

It's means "Einstein for all". Everywhere in Berlin you'll be able to see quotes by Einstein on several buildings. This all is a part of the celebration for the Einstein year in 2005.

It looks like a very touching building. Its structure is unique, yet manages to escape blandness despite its "ordinary" appearance in some areas. Its facade is surely out of this world, and it must be even more interesting up close.

The Jewish Museum is absolutely unique and I think it fits quite well to its theme - And as I was there, I felt enormously vibrant emotions by looking at this building. Fantaboulous! :)
Even the theme is very difficult... (But this museum and the Holocaust memorial in Berlin does their thing in a very well way)

I gave it a 9.5... hey, very few buildings deserve a perfect 10.;)
Love the zig-zag shape and the interior is just stunning. I read an article on this museum in the New York Times years ago and that's what attracted me to Libeskind's work.
