B-Patriot October 18th, 2005, 03:57 PM I'd like to see some more pictures...Its interesting...The bridge sorta looks cool...
But to tell u the truth i really don't like Saudi, or Riyadh...For a country with a quarter of the world's oil reserves, the capital is very unimpressive, almost embarassing...And the airport is SOOOOOOOO old fashioned...Must be ancient..
Gilgamesh October 18th, 2005, 04:04 PM Nice pics!
And the airport is SOOOOOOOO old fashioned...Must be ancient..
Oh, don't worry...It'll probably be bulldozed soon enough. :hahaha:
vc15nets October 18th, 2005, 04:14 PM I agree with you Bahraini Patriot. Unfortunately money has been mishandled extremly badly. But having lived in Riyadh for 11 years, I feel that there is something special about the city. Even though it doesn't look that good in the pictures, Riyadh is a great city. The airport is old fashioned because it wasn't built recently and despite its architecture, its still one of the biggest airports in the world (size and area). I also think that Riyadh airport's architecture was supposed to give the airport an old and traditional look. Sorry about not posting enough pictures, its just that there arent many pictures of Riyadh on the web and I havent been to Riyadh recently.
Other gulf countries like the UAE and Bahrain concentrate their development in one city or area. Whereas Saudi Arabia has built Yanbu and Jubail from the sand upwards, expanded the holy mosques by at least 10 times (my estimate), developed Jeddah and Riyadh, and are developing Makkah and Madinah. Saudi Arabia also got a railway back when no other gulf country thought of a national railway system. I would agree with you that Riyadh and the rest of Saudi Arabia are not where they are supposed to be, but the thing is that other gulf countries develop to get on the world map of tourists whereas Saudi doesnt need that foreign money coming in.
Bahraini Spirit October 18th, 2005, 06:29 PM Do you know that this airport is the largest in the world in terms of land size (200 sq. km), that's just under 1/3 the size of Bahrain.
Skoulikimou October 18th, 2005, 10:39 PM i didnt know that they have bridge in riyadh :uh:
*UofT* October 18th, 2005, 10:42 PM I dont know why some people think Riyadh is backwards, The city itsef with around 5 million people is more than any other gulf nation and believe me its not like Jeddah... Riyadh's wealth is incredible.
LordMarshall October 18th, 2005, 10:46 PM intresting pictures. i kind of like the design of the airport.
Skoulikimou October 18th, 2005, 10:49 PM i really dont understand why would they build huge urban area (the capital) in the middle of the desert that is not very convenient,i think they should move the capital to jeddah :D
*UofT* October 18th, 2005, 10:59 PM i really dont understand why would they build huge urban area (the capital) in the middle of the desert that is not very convenient,i think they should move the capital to jeddah :D
Riyadh is the area from which the Saud family is from, the city area was also an oasis and is a very historic city in the Arabian Peninsula. You could see it as being inconvenient or you can also see it as utilitzation of massive desert space for something very productive.
Skoulikimou October 18th, 2005, 11:05 PM i dont mean any disrespect ,but that the way i see it :cheers1:
shayan October 18th, 2005, 11:08 PM I dont like saudi arabia. Its a big sand country with some big buildings. It doesnt have any karakter. I only like mecca and medina because they have historical value but the rest of saudi arabia is kinda nothing on historic perspective (compairing with surounding nations)
Qatar4Ever October 19th, 2005, 07:14 PM Your very wrong shayan. Before I posted my reply, i was going to post asking someone to post pics of some of saudi arabia's historical palaces and castles. It has something many other places around lack, true culture !! A multiethinic population that comprimses of different cultures.. its amazing this country. But we seldom hear or see these things because, as i believe, the religious ppl in charge don't want to highlight these aspects of saudi arabia. They'd rather destory old castles and erase some of the different local cultures and have ppl live the way they wish them too.
shayan October 19th, 2005, 10:51 PM but i was kinda compairing with surounding nations if you compair saudi arabia with surounding nations its not even compaireble. ( i know about the castles and the mountains in the south west ) well qatar4ever do you have some pictures so change my point of view??
U4Eyes October 19th, 2005, 11:03 PM i really dont understand why would they build huge urban area (the capital) in the middle of the desert that is not very convenient,i think they should move the capital to jeddah :D
the economic capital was jeddah then it was changed.

There are loads of historic sites in Saudi Arabia but they arent promoted. All of the ones above and many more. The present Saudi Arabia is also history in the making!
I think I should rename this thread as Saudi Pictures instead of Riyadh Pictures.
Skoulikimou October 20th, 2005, 06:09 PM Roman temple in KSA i never knew that :dunno:
huit October 20th, 2005, 07:38 PM great pics!!!
shayan October 20th, 2005, 09:10 PM that's nice. Funny to see african culture in saudi arabia.
Bahraini Spirit October 21st, 2005, 12:23 AM Thanks for the pics. From my experience, and I've seen a lot of Saudi Arabia, it's a great country, very nice, a lot of variety, but people don't know much about it. It's not the friendliest touristic place in terms of laws and regulations but it certainly has a lot to offer.
vc15nets October 28th, 2005, 10:11 PM Can someone rename this thread "Saudi Arabia Pictures". I'll post pics from all over saudi.

Moody November 3rd, 2005, 12:23 AM Cool collection, Riyadh is organized well, been there twice,
prsn41ife November 3rd, 2005, 12:57 AM i have a question. why doesnt KSA spend any money on more skyscrapers and more density like dubai is??? it could attract some tourism. they dont have to build any clubs or bars or anything.
prsn41ife November 3rd, 2005, 12:58 AM great pics and there is some great architecture! what are those skyscrapers used for, business or apartments????
huit November 3rd, 2005, 11:18 AM i have a question. why doesnt KSA spend any money on more skyscrapers and more density like dubai is??? it could attract some tourism. they dont have to build any clubs or bars or anything.
I think one of the reasons they donot go for skyscrapers is that they have abundance of land available... so going vertical may not be a viable option for them.
*UofT* November 3rd, 2005, 11:20 AM I think one of the reasons they donot go for skyscrapers is that they have abundance of land available... so going vertical may not be a viable option for them.
The real reason is Saudi doesn't invest much of their cash in their own country, its usually sent abroad to NASDAQ and NYSE
Moody November 3rd, 2005, 12:53 PM Faisalia Tower and Kingdom Tower look fantastic
vc15nets November 3rd, 2005, 03:25 PM The real reason is Saudi doesn't invest much of their cash in their own country, its usually sent abroad to NASDAQ and NYSE
True but Saudi doesnt need Skyscrapers or tourism. If they wanted tourists, they would allow tourist visas and would promote their abundant historic places (look at the first page of this thread) like Madain Saleh.
Saudi doesnt need skyscrapers because almost all of the cash comes from industrial plants not financial centers.
Saudi has invested alot in their own country in terms of what their own people need not what foreigners like (that is what dubai is doing). Saudi has one of the best road networks in the world, all the infrastructure is there, etc. The government also spends alot on its people. Every single Saudi has access to the basic necessaties of life because the government subsidizes in food and provides good healthcare. People without jobs are given money and a place to live. What else do the people need besides freedom? Building skyscrapers is not practical expecially when you have a country which is as huge as Saudi. Saudi doesnt have many banks or other financial companies so why build skyscrapers when there is no demand. And no one in Saudi likes to live in apartments. People like villas.
vc15nets November 3rd, 2005, 03:28 PM Faisalia Tower and Kingdom Tower look fantastic
Yeah....They're amazing arent they..... Small but unique skyline. The view from Kingdom center's SKYBRIDGE is amazing. Fasaliah Tower is exactly in line with Kingdom center.
Moody November 3rd, 2005, 04:07 PM Yep, what about Riyadh's best shopping malls? it's been quite long time since i visited the capital about,,,, 13 yrs so much have changed already although even 13 yrs back Riyadh was just amazing,
vc15nets November 3rd, 2005, 09:23 PM I havent been to Riyadh for a while now but I've heard that there is a new mall opening every other day (well, not literally but there are a hell of a lot of malls in Riyadh)
It truly is the city that never sleeps. You have to check out the place to really appreciate what it has to offer.

womfalcs3 May 2nd, 2008, 03:53 AM City looks great and awesome! I want to visit it quite soon. But you know, I'm from Poland do I need to be afraid of something becouse of being European?
No. When I go to a mall on weekday mornings in Jeddah, I see a lot of Western expatriates/visitors shopping. There's a sizable Western community in Saudi Arabia. I believe the last estimate was 100,000 US and British citizens alone living in the country.
channel May 4th, 2008, 09:47 PM I'd like to see some more pictures...Its interesting...The bridge sorta looks cool...
But to tell u the truth i really don't like Saudi, or Riyadh...For a country with a quarter of the world's oil reserves, the capital is very unimpressive, almost embarassing...And the airport is SOOOOOOOO old fashioned...Must be ancient..
you need to fuckk of you ignorant peasant. I have passed through the Riyad airport several times during transit in the 1980's and it is one of the best airports i have been to, and i have been to many. The water fountain is superb and the lack of duty free and the riff raff that goes with is non existent and that is a goood thing. Where are you from B patriot??
Many thanks to all who posted the pictures of this great city, people who scoff at riyadh are definately jealous because they are from some poverty spec country and just envy what the saudi's got

Kingdom Centre in Riyadh is the tallest skyscraper in Saudi Arabia.
With a height of 302 m (992 ft), it is considered the 25th tallest building in the world.
Riyadh. Kingdom Centre was the winner of the 2002 Emporis Skyscraper Award, selected as the "best new skyscraper of the year for design and functionality".

Saudi Arabia's first skyscraper
267m high, the gently curving profile of the Faisaliah tower is visible from almost anywhere in the city of 5 million.
From a distance, the British-designed tower resembles the nib of a fountain pen.
It took three years to complete, and uses some unusual methods of combating the desert heat of more than 50°C (120°F).

raphae_zx July 21st, 2009, 02:12 PM Hello friends,
My name is Khurram and I was born in Riyadh. I spent all my teen years before moving to another country in 1996.
I miss my origin city very much and in this forum I see expert photographers with their excellent skills.
Can someone from you guys help me sustain my memories of Riyadh coz when I left we did not used to have digital cameras or mobile fones with cams?
I want specific memories of
1. Batha Souk - the market on the main road, some shops from outside if possible
2. Manfoha souk - The old abandoned mall in the center where only main attraction was Abu Hussain Bakala since the mall was not a commercial success. Also, some pix of the main road leading from this old mall to main Shaara Mutaar signal as there are shops and almost at the end after Saqaaf medical store just before the signal there used to be a turkish pizza shop, one pic of that plz.
3. Shoula Souk - pix from ground floor. It was my favorite mall.
4. Jarir Book Store in Olaya, I think. The main bookstore.
I know its too much to ask and there is lot of efforts involved but if any of you provide me these memories, I will be very, very grateful to you.
I love Riyadh and its memories help me live on my life.
Regards.
christos-greece July 25th, 2009, 11:30 AM Do you have a problem to post a couple of photos of Riyadh? Thanks
Koobideh December 9th, 2009, 11:55 PM What other ethnicities reside in Riyadh and Saudi Arabia, apart from Saudi Arabians?
Is it also true there are quite a lot of people from Iran who live in Saudi Arabia? But not recent immigrants, more like people who settled in Saudi from Iran like 100 years ago or something?
The Dude of Dhahran December 10th, 2009, 01:45 PM Is it also true there are quite a lot of people from Iran who live in Saudi Arabia? But not recent immigrants, more like people who settled in Saudi from Iran like 100 years ago or something?
Almost extremely few Iranians with iranian nationalities who live and work in saudi arabia, and there is no record about a mass immigrants 100 years ago or even before that, but we have Farsi’s with a saudi nationality all of them are sunnis and share the same last family name Al Farsi, the Farsi Ethnic group have been around since Salman Al Farsi arrival in Arabia, in the end there is no city, town or a village in saudi arabia who is known for having alot Iranians in it.
AX125 January 20th, 2010, 01:16 PM may i ask for a picture of olayan complex and the towers also the surrounding areas. i will be comming to riyadh soon and i am excited to see my new place.

It wasn't probobly a major river . River #1 seen in the map is the now famous Rumma Wadi وادي الرمة , it floods every 40 years or so .
NASA picture showing the last and most recent flood on Al-Qaseem area :
http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/7435/11uw0.jpg
Wadi Hanifa is not as big as Rummah , Rummah can be 5 km wide at cretin points - some even clam 8 km - while Hnifah ranges from 50-100 m only .
ibib June 19th, 2010, 04:25 PM RIVERS IN ARABIA? See where two major rivers existed in the past, below:
http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/8265/92945514.jpg
Two major Arabian peninsula rivers that could start flowing again.
River #1 was 650 miles long, and averaged 5 miles wide and 50 feet deep along its entire length, was studied by Boston University scientist Farouk El-Baz in 1993. (DISCOVER, July 1993 "A river in the desert").
River #2, the Empty Quarter river and its associated lakes and marshlands, flowing through the southern Arabian peninsula, extrapolated from five sources:
Giant Lake, originally 100 meters deep (300 feet) can clearly be seen from Google Earth images.
(1.) A NASA Landsat composite of Saudi Arabia made by geology.com posted at http://geology.com/world/saudi-arabia-satellite-image.shtml , (2.) An article about Aramco geologist Hal McClure's thesis, in a 1989 issue of Aramco World, "Lakes of the Rub' al-Khali" http://www.saudiaramcoworld.com/issue/198903/lakes.of.the.rub.al-khali.htm and
(3.) Ancient riverbed locations from Dr. Abdallah E. Dabbagh (et al) at King Fahd University in Dhahran, "Geologic and Hydrologic Studies of Saudi Arabia Under the Spaceborne Imaging Radar-C (SIR-C) Science Plan" http://southport.jpl.nasa.gov/ProgressReports0496/Dabbagh.Final.html
especially the "Figure 11 - Pleistocene drainage of Arabian Peninsula." http://southport.jpl.nasa.gov/ProgressReports0496/gifs/dabbagh11.gif, (4.) Philby, H. St. John B. 1933 book "The Empty Quarter: Being a description of the Great South Desert of Arabia known as Rub' al Khali" (pub. Henry Holt & Co. NY) on his chapter "Forgotten Rivers" and finding river beds with fresh-water shells, and (5.) Google Earth images.
Basemap is from "The World" 1998 scale 1:30,000,000 at the equator, published by the Dept. of Defense, National Imagery and Mapping Agency
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Empty Quarter's lake beds, according to McClure, are distributed down the middle length of the Rub' al-Khali" - a distance of some 750 miles (1,200 kilometers) and bones of hippopotamus, water buffalo and long-horned cattle, wild asses, wild goats or sheep, oryx, gazelle, and possibly camels and hartebeest, as well as fresh water clam shells, have been found in the ancient lake mud.
Written records exist, describing rivers in Arabia flowing in historic times. In 430 BCE, Herodotus in "The Histories" Book III mentions a "great river in Arabia, called the Corys". Later, the historian Strabo in 22 CE in "Geography" Book XVI tells about the Roman expedition in Arabia of Aelius Gallus arriving at a river in the middle of the desert, and describes the southwestern part of Arabia with enough rain in the summer to produce two crops a year, and reports that rivers were flowed into lakes.
