View Full Version : Who wants to see an inner-city Detroit neighborhood?

I was out and about again the other day and I thought it would be interesting to showcase one of Detroit's non-marquee neighborhoods. I picked the North End. Located about three miles directly north of Downtown, the neighborhood is roughly bounded by Woodward Ave. to the West, Westminster Ave. to the North, I-75 to the East, and East Grand Blvd. to the South.

The population in 2000 was about 5,500. The area of the neighborhood is just over 4/5 of a sq. mi., giving the neighborhood as a whole a density of about 6,400 ppsm. The North End is 95% black, 2% white, 2% multiracial, and 1% of some other race.

The residential aspects of the neighborhood as a whole are mostly intact, though abandonment is common on several streets. The commercial district along Oakland Ave. has been reduced to abandoned storefronts, empty lots, and the occasional liquor store. There has been several rehabilitations of some of the dilapidated apartment buildings, but there are still several more that currently sit abandoned.

Anyway, enjoy:

This isn't technically in the North End neighborhood, but it just seems ripe for lofts.

And I liked this picture for some reason with the huge factory overshadowing the slightly disrepaired homes.

It's not really "inner-city", other than that it is basically in the geographic center of the city.

And I wouldn't call this neighborhood an exception. (Assuming you think the majority of Detroit's neighborhoods are abandoned.) It's very typical of Detroit's core neighborhoods. Granted, I usually only show the better homes.

interesting! i agree with talb on this one, if you showed these without saying its inner city, i would have thought it was suburban.

not bad from the pictures, some of the houses are quite nice, is poverty common in this area? how about the crime rate?

What a nice looking area. It looks very calm, like you will see a few kids playing in the park most of the time or someone reading a book or news paper out front.

Oh no. You can't believe such lies! Detroit is one giant slum where people will shoot you just for walking down the street!

This can't be Detroit. There aren't any bombed out buildings in these photos...

Seriously, the housing stock in this neighborhood is beautiful.

Your series on Detroit is excellent, IMO. They are unvarnished yet interesting. Each picture in this thread seems to provide a quiet commentary of its own... The absence of people in the pics is rather disquieting, if not strangely serene.

I always feel uncomfortable taking pictures of people, especially in residential neighborhoods, so while the neighborhood wasn't particularly busy, there was a good amount of people out doing house and yard work as well as walking.
