Architects propose transfer of capital city of Nairobi
Written By:Judith Akolo , Posted: Thu, Aug 16, 2007

The Architectural Association of Kenya - AAK has proposed the transfer of the capital city of Nairobi to a new site.

The Association says expiry of the master plan for the city that guided development of the city expired and has given way to poor and unplanned constructions in the city.

The Association Chairman Gideon Mulyungi says Kenya should emulate the likes of South Africa that classified its cities Johannesburg, Capetown and Pretoria, Nigeria moved its capital from Lagos to Abuja while in Tanzania the capital city was moved from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma.

The chairman noted that roads serving Nairobi are too narrow to contain the kind of population explosion being witnessed in the city.

He said the cost of housing has also shot up leading to high inflation.

He said demand for housing has outstripped supply and now needs immediate measures that will forestall the rapid and unplanned growth.

Mulyungi who addressed a news conference in Nairobi called on the government to waive duty on building materials for lost cost houses and give tax excemptions for developers who put up more housing units.

The chairman said this could help bring down the high cost of housing.

Housing has been identified as one of the reason for the rising rate of inflation that is now pegged at 13 per cent.

Families are having to part with over half of their income to pay for housing.

Vice Chairman Steven Oundo said Nairobi is suffering from residual tenancy in which people who came to the city to seek an education have opted to live in the city due to other economic pursuits hence pushing up population figures.

Secretary Juma Oino called for an audit of all buildings in the city in order to help avert a catastrophe if an earthquake occurred.

Oino said with an audit in place, buildings thought to be weak could be reinforced to make them strong.

Well Naiguy thats a controversial issue in Kenya esp when considering regional balance/backlash. Actually the Kenyan capital per see could have been Mombasa or Machakos but that was a colonial(British) accident/choice. Right now more people are enlightened I think the question, personally speaking s not moving the capital but strengthening the provincial principal cities to have the best in Health/Hopitals, Airport, Hotels, Industries, Education and Government services that Nairobi has so as not to neccessarily think of going to NRB. It is unfortunate in Kenya that anyother town is reffered to as (going to reserve) and Nairobi is the Only City in Peoples mind.

nai guy
August 17th, 2007, 04:42 AM
I think you are right on that one. If the government could spread development and infrustrucure to diferrent places like smaller towns and cities, it would help with the growing slums issue and it would spread develoments quickly. Also access to services would be easier without travelling to nairobi or mombasa. New capital city isnt that bad either.

ernestombayo7
August 17th, 2007, 06:08 AM
If they decide to move the Capital,i propose they Choose Machakos or Thika.Machakos is centrlly located and its near the airport.Though Machakos itself is disorganised,it has housing flats smack in the middle of the town center.Maybe it would be a good idea to just create a new capital altogether.

What about funding? I support upgrading the other cities and towns to Nairobi's standards. Moving the capital won't make Nairobi any less attractive to those looking for jobs and the trappings of an urban lifestyle-The population explosion problem will still be there. Just look across the border, Tanzanians still flock to Dar es salaam for better economic prospects as compared to Dodoma. Lagos and Abidjan are still economically the capitals of their respective countries with higher populations than the new capitals that have been built in both Nigeria and Cote d'Ivoire respectively.

The solution is simple. Make Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret and Nakuru as attractive as Nairobi.

africanman, here are the flats being built. I think the AAK should be more concerned about such desperately needed projects rather than talking about grandiose new city projects

those flats are great and will help solve the housing problems in Nairobi. I have discussed the Nairobi issue before because I think that the government needs to spread development to other cities. Mombasa, Nakuru and Kisumi should be self contained cities. I think that Moi and Kenyatta tried to centralize everything because of their need to control everything and this has not been good for Kenya. I like what the current government is trying to do by funding projects outside Nairobi.

They (Government) are planning to set up a satellite urban township to the south of the city, around the national park. Once they build this township, they plan on relocating the majority of Kibera's residents here and redevelop the slum into another city estate. Im not for the idea though for some reasons:
1.) the township is going to be built on a wildlife migratory route that may alter the national park's biodiversity.

2.) Considering that most residents of Kibera are employed in the nearby industrial area and the surrounding suburbs, getting to work will be a major problem since transport costs will be prohibitively high-Unless they set up a major industrial area around Athi river which is unlikely.

3.) I think the best way forward would be for Kibera's residents to have communal title deeds for the land on which their houses stand on. That way, they can come together, form co-operative societies with which they can aquire loans, using their land as collateral, to build proper houses. Of course the authorities have to chip in to provide basic infrastructure.

Nairobi looks like a realy nice city. And they shouldnt move the capital. That would just cost money. Just strenghten the regional cities to avoid too much migration. Mombasa already feels like a nice place. The whole gold coast looks fantastic with lots of new job opportunities in tourisms, research an industries. Lets hope they build the Mombasa university. That could be a centre of marine research on a global scale. Not many places have such a nice coral reef just a jew metres from the beach.

Any one with updates regarding this Seven Star Hotel in Nairobi. So far worldover their is only one seven Star Hotel in Milano Italy . I heard that Libyans have acquired the land around Grand regency Hotel for a similar Development. The Former US embassy I understand is also to be turned into a multi million dollar hotel. If the goverment moves on to revitalise this Project then it should become its biggest undertaking yet to turn Nairobi into a truly 21st Century Metropolis.
