Bahraini Spirit October 21st, 2005, 09:23 PM Nice, Nairobi is known to be one of Africa's best and nicest cities. I have a friend from Kenya who told me lots of stories about the country.
shayan October 21st, 2005, 09:51 PM are thet really poor in Kenia? i mean like other nations in afrika like somalia and ethiopia. Or are the living standard in Kenia better than in the earlier named nations??
Bahraini Spirit October 21st, 2005, 10:02 PM Well there are poor ppl in Kenya, just like any other place in Africa. But it's considered one of the better African countries if you know what I mean.
SE9 October 22nd, 2005, 09:33 AM That's right. There are many poor peoples in Kenya, but Kenya has always been just about the strongest country in East Africa.

Matthias Offodile October 27th, 2005, 01:16 PM Africa is beautiful and by showing such photos I DO HOPE THAT PEOPLE WILL LEARN TO DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN AFRICAN COUNTRIES. unfortunately, many people just lump all African countries together as it is the "hopeless", "distasteful" and "burning" continent Western media so devishly take an extreme delight in portraying to the outside world. Of course, the continent has a lot of problems which urgently need to be dealt with but there are numerous countries APART FROM South African and North Africa (which are portrayed as "something" seperate from the "dark people/continent" in all western media) that are doing well and improving. (Senegal, Ghana, Kenya, Botswana, Namibia, Tanzania, Gabon.....and not forget Ivory Coast which was the shining example of Black Africa until 1999. This country had growth rates comparable to those of the Asian tigers in the 70´s and early 80´s and it picked up again in the early 90. When this crisis ends there the country will quickly pick up again. Don´t forget to have an eye on the big country Nigeria: even there things are improving over there and there more to the country than corruption and oil.
AFRICA IS NOT A COUNTRY IT IS A CONTINENT CONSISTING OF MORE THAN 50 COUNTRIES with a size larger than China Western Europe and USA and Canada combined.
PS: Thanks for posting this lovely images on Nairobi. :) :) :) :) :)

I'm just wondering, do any of the African countries have their own native styles of architecture? I know that many African countries histories are mainly tribal and nomadic (and as a result there were not many permanent settlements for local styles of architecture to develop) but I know that Ethiopia for example has a very long and rich history, is this reflected in it's architecture and are there other examples (with the exception of Egypt of course since we all know about their long history).

from my own research i believe many nations (i.e. zulu, ashanti, etc.) do have their own traditional forms, but not all of them. the ones that don't, tend to share native styles with other peoples. also keep in mind that most african nations were divided and/or conglomerated into huge modern states like nigeria and south africa, so from that respect i would say that almost no african country has it's own style. now the thing that drives me insane, as a black man, is the fact that africans tend to have a colonial mindset, where anything african is bad/inferior and anything european is good/superior. for example, i once was talking to a nigerian who wanted me to design him a mediteranian style home for lagos. i would even wager that most modern homes built in a cultural/ethnic style are all european (spanish, italian, french etc.) or arabic. of all of the pictures of modern architecture that i have seen over the years, only a handful of the buildings reflected any traditional aesthetics. the rest were preserved colonial era or international style. even in ethiopia you will find such buildings.

You know what, I actually totaly agree with your post, if only you hadn't posted all this neo-colonialist crap before...
Matthias Offodile November 5th, 2005, 01:43 PM Hi Virtual , I have not posted ANY neo-colonial crap before all I said was true...the same is with this posting! I do ALSO DISLIKE arrogant PEOPLE who say :" Look at "THE" Africans , what a poor "country"(!!!) Africa is with no chance of development for the next century! WHAT A COMPLETE BULLSHIT!!!

Spearman December 1st, 2005, 02:47 AM Hey; great thread. I have actually had the pleasure of visiting the "cold place". Nice city with lots of life, and a great skyline.
Someone asked: Unfortunately, there are poverty in Nairobi too, and I don't think SE9s pic of the suburb is quite representative. There are some areas with cheaper housing too, but they are not visible from the city centre. That is at least what I was told. I wasn't too much in that part of town...
SE9 December 1st, 2005, 09:34 AM ^^ Its true.. you have some very nice areas (mainly towards the west of town), some OK areas, and quite a few run down areas and, unfortunately, slums.
Are there any new proposed high rises?
No, not that I know of :(, although Emporis are slow to post #UC towers of Nairobi on their database.
Everytime I go back there's at least 1 new tower.

Nairobi is a beautifull city. There is a lot of good modern achitecture. I do like this tall building, which looks like very african. Kenya improved own kind of architecture :)
NorthPole December 11th, 2005, 08:45 PM ^^ You are right. The same impression to me.
I've never been in Kenya, but I was in Tanzania (D-e-S, Zanzibar). I think Dar es Salam is very similar to Nairobi (but has less ss) and Zanzibar is similar to Mombasa (narrow historical streets, walls, fort etc.)
I know Kenya is business hub for East Africa and leader of "revived" East African Community. It's also leader in deomcratization of this part of the continent (if president's wife illegaly enters a newspaper agency and start to quarrel, and then it's case in court against president's wife, it's for me a proof for democracy there :) , and the last Orange Revolution in Kenya... long long way to go for Ugandan democracy).
SE9 December 11th, 2005, 09:05 PM Yep some parts do indeed look v. western. Its true of alot of Nairobi..
..but then you also have one of the largest slums in Africa on its outskirts; the product of urbanization.. the poor moving from the countryside to the city in search of a better life.
miglanc December 12th, 2005, 01:21 AM Demografic explosion is big problem for Africa, South America and Asia. There is too much people in the country and they emigrate to big cities. Cities are developing too slow for emigrants. It create big slums.
African countries need investition to create jobs, for this people. But investors will come, if there are good law standards in the state.
SE9 December 12th, 2005, 08:36 PM True. Well its alot more democratic in Kenya than it used to be, although things are far from perfect.

A Sh50 million ice skating facility to promote tourism was launched at the Panari Hotel in Nairobi.
The facility, which measures 15,000 square feet and can accommodate 200 people skiing in one direction, is the largest in Africa.
Kenya becomes the third country after Egypt and South Africa to offer ice skating as a sport in Africa.
Speaking during the official launch on Friday night, Tourism and Wildlife minister Morris Dzoro told the Sunday Nation that the government was committed to promoting new investments to help attract more tourists into the country.
"This is the largest single facility of its kind on the continent and can be ranked at the same level with those in Europe. There are only two such facilities in Africa and I'm glad we have realised the Kenyan dream of being the first to offer ice skating as a sport in East and Central Africa," Mr Dzoro said.
"We are encouraging investors to come and put up new and innovative facilities that will attract more visitors into the country now that tourism is picking up. This new facility is one such and will offer a variety that will attract huge numbers." the minister said.
The Managing Director of Panari Hotel, Mr Sigi Loeper said, he had been motivated to promote the sport as a tourist attraction in order to keep young people from engaging in drug abuse and other vices.
"Ice Skating is common in Europe during the winter season. In Africa we do not have such a sport and that is why we have decided to pick this as a new product to promote tourism in Kenya.
Mr Loeper said there were trainers at the facility but later the hotel will bring in specialists to train and promote Ice hockey.
Mr Kishore Reddy, the director of North Star Cooling Systems, which has installed the facility, told the Sunday Nation it will require maintenance through out the day to prevent the ice from melting.

Sania December 20th, 2005, 09:34 AM well the pics looks beautiful
SE9 December 20th, 2005, 09:37 AM Well a culmination of things resulted in Nairobi getting poorer.
As Nairobi continued to develop as a city, it attracted poor peoples from the countryside. These people then have no income in the big city, and so robbery and crime is their only option.
Also, the police force within the city is very corrupt. I think its the most corrupt institution in Kenya, which is never good.
So as the rich get richer, the poor get poorer and the police get lazier, crime starts to rise.

SE9 December 26th, 2005, 11:26 AM Naomi Campbell in Kenya - And Loving It
http://www.nationmedia.com/dailynation/images/news/NewsinS251205.jpg
Naomi Campbell, the black British supermodel and actress, is visiting Kenya, what she calls her "African home" again for the Christmas and New Year holidays.
Once again staying in the coastal resort town of Malindi, Ms Campbell, 35, gave an exclusive interview to the Sunday Nation and spoke of her love for Kenya, her career as a model, and her love life.
Ms Campbell, who is estimated to have so far acquired a wealth of US$28 million (over Sh200 million) from modelling, said she loves Kenya because of the warmth of the people.
"I love Malindi and the whole of Kenya because of the beautiful beaches, the loving Indian Ocean, the fascinating Rift Valley, the beautiful nature and wildlife. But in particular because of the people, always ready to greet you with a genuine smile."
Ms Campbell, who was born in Streatham, South London, and who studied at the London Academy for Performing Arts, told the Sunday Nation that there was really no such thing as a typical day on holiday for her.
"I really do not go with [a] schedule. I relax first, I do gym, I go to the beach, [do some] some shopping or visit a particular place, or simply enjoy the sun in the swimming pool," she said.
Speaking of her love life and her high-profile ex-boyfriend, the Formula One Benneton team boss Flavio Briatore, with whom she has had a steamy, turbulent relationship for the past eight years, Ms Campbell said: "Flavio is one of the best friends I have. He is not anymore my boyfriend – but a friend is forever. He is my family."
The super modeltold the Sunday Nation: "One of the reasons I love Malindi is that I can walk on the road without people bothering me: They just greet you with a smile and say hello. Malindi is the only place ( in the world) where I can walk freely on the road without being afraid of anything." Ms Campbell revealed that she has been involved in "some projects in Africa on my own. They are all addressed at the improvement of the life of children. Children are our future, we must take care of them with maximum effort."

SE9 January 28th, 2006, 08:58 AM some bad news:
Kenya rescuers lose contact with buried victims
NAIROBI (Reuters) - Rescue workers in Kenya have lost contact with two people buried alive under a building that collapsed in central Nairobi three days ago, killing at least 13 and injuring more than 100, officials said on Wednesday.
Officials expect the death toll to rise as workers dig deeper into the rubble of the six-storey building, which was under construction when it collapsed around noontime on Monday.
"We've pulled out five dead, and that brings the tally to 13," Kenya government spokesman Alfred Mutua said.
Rescuers have lost contact with two people who were still alive on Tuesday, but did not know if they had died, Mutua said.
"We have to be hopeful until the last minute, until everyone is out. We realize that the more time it takes decreases the chances of survival, but we cannot lose hope," Mutua said.
Officials have been unable to say how many people, dead or alive, were still in the rubble of the building, which was full of construction workers when it collapsed.
Kenyan rescuers were being led by an elite Israeli military team. U.S. Navy engineers and British civilian experts have also joined in the search.
No survivors were pulled out overnight after seven people were rescued on Tuesday, officials said.
The collapse in a bustling central commercial district has prompted calls for tougher building code enforcement and better emergency response.
The Daily Nation newspaper blamed the collapse on government negligence and cheap construction. It called for buildings to be checked for safety, and made safe or demolished if not.
"There may well be complaints that such an exercise is draconian or expensive. Unfortunately, there is no other remedy - not unless we want to sit back and wait for another disaster and needless loss of life," its editorial said.
The Standard newspaper said the government's response showed it had not learned from a 1998 U.S. embassy bombing in Nairobi, which killed more than 250 people and wounded thousands.
"It is apparent our state of disaster preparedness is harrowingly negligible. That is why we have to wait for Israelis to take charge of our rescue operations," its editorial said.

Coca-Cola to Invest $135 Mln in Kenya
NAIROBI (Reuters) - Soft drinks giant Coca-Cola Co. (KO.N: Quote, Profile, Research) plans to invest $135 million in Kenya over the next five years to expand its business in one of Africa's fastest growing markets, the company's chief executive said on Wednesday.
Coca-Cola Chief Executive Neville Isdell said recent tax reforms in Kenya had helped the company grow in the east African nation, according to a statement issued by Kenya's presidential press service after he met with President Mwai Kibaki.
"The removal of excise duty on raw materials used in the manufacture of soft drinks ... has given a new impetus to the growth of our industry in this country," he was quoted as saying.
A representative of Coca-Cola in the Kenyan capital said the company had cleared the statement.
Isdell also said the company would build a new $16.74 million plant in the Indian Ocean town of Mombasa, Kenya's second biggest city.
Coca-Cola last year opened a $25 million plant in Nairobi -- one of its biggest in Africa -- with a production capacity of 1.8 million drinks a day.
Coca-Cola restructured its operations in Africa in September 2004 to boost sales and profit and cut costs.
Nairobi is currently the regional headquarters for operations in 23 countries in Eastern and Central Africa.

The result is that nearly all the buildings in the CBD are being given a fresh coat of paint. A casual walk will reveal scaffolding and painters hanging precariously all over the place on platforms sprucing up buildings that have not seen a coat of paint in decades.
Among them is the city skyline's symbol, the KICC tower, that has received a thorough scrub, together with the imposing statue of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, which is now shining with sparkling polish having replaced lichens and layers of dust. Even the long-neglected Nyayo monument in Central Park has been spruced up.
"Everyone has to do their bit. We cannot continue complaining that the city is dirty while it is us who are dirty. We have told them we do not want to see buildings that look like the Gedi ruins. Every building must be repainted every four years," Gakuo says.

No, that's what I always saw on various documentaries on wild tribes in Africa. I know that there is civilization in Egypt and other northern african countries though.
lochinvar April 15th, 2006, 05:09 AM Maybe the African governments should encourage people engaged in making documentaries to do these series showing both urban and rural areas of Africa. The African governments need to be more proactive when dealing with people engaged in media.

LOL...each country in Africa should have at least a capital city...so even if one has not heard anything about Africa, one can safely assume there's at least one major urban area in each country...
SE9 April 19th, 2006, 05:36 PM What is the standard of living for most people in Nairobi? All the pictures look very nice but I think that there is a huge difference between incomes.
The gap is very large. Many immigrants to the city from the north (Somalia, Sudan and Ethiopia) live in poverty, whereas many live quite comfortably.

New American Embassy (with comments):
http://www.aia.org/aiarchitect/thisweek05/tw0121/0121aiava_15state_b.jpg
The design of this U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, met the challenge of blending highly secure, traditional architecture with local building materials and a welcoming façade. To accomplish this, the architects created a distinctively American porch shielded by an intricately stitched louver screen, a colonnade, and an expansive lawn. The central building’s L-shape wraps around a courtyard, while other elements of the landscape function as outdoor rooms. “We’re giving this a prize with the hope that the Department of State continues to commission good architecture that’s responsive to history, and context, and technology—and that they don’t default to just doing one cookie-cutter embassy after another,” the jury said. “This embassy is important because of its history. And it’s nice that is has a delicate screen surrounding it and a defined entryway that welcomes people.”

baersworth May 11th, 2006, 11:43 AM Africa should not rely on the West English media to show the real face of Africa. For most people outside Africa, the English media controled by the West is the main source of information. I really do not know how true is the image of Africa reported by the West media, but if I take their report of China as a sample, I know how bias they are. Internet is just a good thing, I can have direct information here :-)

Mikey, you need to get a free www.photobucket.com account from there you download your pic from your PC (just click the browze button on the photobucket site).
Your picture will appear in a little box on the photobucket screen, below that will be three lines of code. You need to copy the line of code which starts with and finishes with
and paste it on a post page here.
Hope that helps.

Xusein June 17th, 2006, 09:10 AM Great pictures! :)
Nairobi has always been far ahead of comparable cities when it came to skylines. I hope one day, after the shit is over, that Somali cities like Mogadishu can start developing to be even be compared to Nairobi.
The city has almost 3 million people and NOT one high rise, let alone a building with more than five floors.
SE9 June 17th, 2006, 09:20 AM Not 1 above 5 floors! Man I didn't know that. Well Mogadishu does have potential, especially in its location. It could be a port, an air-transit city, a tourist city (with those fine beaches)....
Well one day.

SE9 June 17th, 2006, 09:40 PM Yep I've got pics of other Kenyan (and East African) cities: Mombasa, Kisumu etc.
I've also got some project news too. I'll dig them out over the next week or 2.

Thanks for asking :)

To start off, here's some pics of Mombasa, Kenya's 2nd city, and Kenya's oldest city
As Mombasa is such an old city, it shows examples of Arabic architecture, as Mombasa has always been the main port for ships sailing between East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
The architecture and beaches make Mombasa a popular tourist destination, especially for Italians and Germans amongst others.
EDIT: Put photos in new thread.
SE9 June 23rd, 2006, 12:52 AM It should be noted that:
- Mombasa is the largest and busiest port in East Africa.
- Mombasa is the 2nd largest city in Kenya, and the oldest city.
- A fort was founded here in the 1500s by Vasco da Gama of Portugal.
- It hosts the World Cross Country Championships 2007.
- A Mombasa hotel, popular with Israeli tourists, was bombed by Al Qaeda in 2002.
- Al Qaeda also tried to shoot down an El Al (Israeli Airline) plane taking off from Mombasa's Moi Airport, but the rocket launcher missed the target (also in 2002)
- Mombasa is East Africa's premier costal destination.

* The minibuses are called "Mutatu's". They were notorious for being dangerously overpacked and fast, but recently, every mutatu has had speed governors and seat-belts installed. These buses transport peole across the city, and between cities.
The decor of the matatu's shows Kenyan's love for football and music.

I wouldn't recommend a long haul trip in one though as the standard of driving is a bit mad, but for local journies they are cool.
