I think it makes sense to follow the US' lead. Who else is on board?

In a bid to stay in step with Canada's largest trading partner, Ontario said Thursday it will become the first province to extend daylight time.

Attorney General Michael Bryant says the province's economy was the deciding factor and that if Ontario isn't on the same time as the United States, it will be hurt financially.

Earlier this week, reports suggested Quebec was also planning to extend daylight time.

Daylight time is now from the beginning of April to the end of October.

Under the U.S. plan, clocks will change on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November, starting in 2007.

U.S. President George W. Bush signed on to the change in August as part of a massive energy bill.

I don't know if this is good thing or a bad thing....

Good idea, not because it's going to save energy (oh wait we'll save one Kwh!), but because it will be one step closer to eventually getting rid of daylight savings completely.
I no there's valid reasons to keep it, but I'm sorry I don't like leaving work at 5PM and it's already PITCH BLACK!

This plan is supposed to reduce oil consumption in the U.S by 200 000 barrels/day. As a percentage of overall consumption, this may not seem large, but when you consider that what, less than 5% of our power is generated by oil, that IS significant. Imagine how much less coal we will be burning, how much less natural gas will be pumping etc etc.

It IS definitely a start!

Seems like it should be an all or nothing deal. Having one province follow the US, and having another not use DS at all would be more confusing for canadians than it should be.

I know Québec has decided to follow the U.S on this. Trade with the u.S. is too important for us. I think it'sll come into effect in 2007 here.

This is a great idea. All of North America should, in my opinion keep this year round. Better yet, let's use Double-Daylight Savings Time.

As much as I hate us having to be the States whipping boy on this issue, I fear this will be our cross to bear if we don't want to lose financially.

The plan is to only extend it by one month. Overall, it favours the southern states moreso than the northern states (since many of them will have darkness until 9:00AM now) but it was the right move for Ontario to stay on par with the US.
