well, i think almost ALL cities in the world trace back its root to Roman empire, or some sort of old civilization. Chinese was definitely one back then.

yes and no, Beijing always had a grid system which many Chinese cities dont have, if you consider that American, but grid system was infact a Chinese invention. Beijing is also trying to move its people to suburbs (called satellite towns in Chinese). because the population density in downtown Beijing is too high and living coditions are terrible (terrible sewage system, many traditional houses dont have independent washrooms, and electricity wire is so old it becomes a fire hazard). conditions in suburbs are much betters because they are all modern apartment towers just built. But at the same time Beijing is also trying to link those suburbs with public transit system, Beijing is building subway lines like crazy, i guess that is not something american cities are doing.

Are all these new buildings (Skyscrapers) actually ocupied?

I saw many buildings in Chinese cities that where obviously not
occupied - or construction had stopped just prior to completion.

Although now that I think about it a lot of that was probably from
the Asian economic flu thing - and I'm sure these are becoming a lot
rarer now.
