THE BEAUTY OF KNIGHTSBRIDGE
There are certain lifestyles that defy comparison, just as there are certain buildings that defy categorization. Both can be found at KnightsBridge.
Boundless in its design, unhindered in the lifestyle it offers - it is a beacon, an unparalleled vision of luxury, comfort and modernist style.
Adjacent to Canal Walk, and surrounded entirely by water, KnightsBridge consists of three wings – The Towers, East End and West End, with a central bridge which spans across the waterways, 12 storeys up. With one leg on the mainland and the other on an island, KnightsBridge is a majestic statement of modern architecture.

hsark October 23rd, 2005, 02:43 PM this is going to be a star of a building...the Bridge is so cool havent seen anything like it in sa
SA BOY October 23rd, 2005, 03:00 PM I was given the offer of buying in at the chairmans launch (pre public launch) last year and although it looked good in the renders, I dident think the returns would be that great considering its backing onto the service docks of Centuryt cituy.
Nice idea thou8gh. Any news on progress?
thryve October 23rd, 2005, 05:09 PM I'm not too impressed with this one..
Pieter_Van_Classen October 23rd, 2005, 05:52 PM Now that I really like! I wish it was a hotel though, instead of a residential.
hsark October 23rd, 2005, 07:13 PM I was given the offer of buying in at the chairmans launch (pre public launch) last year and although it looked good in the renders, I dident think the returns would be that great considering its backing onto the service docks of Centuryt cituy.

yup 3 cranes at the site last time i checked
dysan1 April 26th, 2006, 08:03 PM how is it looking? they built the skybridge yet?
mikey67 April 26th, 2006, 08:21 PM Construction is coming on quiet nicely. The skybridge looks as if it's nearing completion.
I'm just dissapointed though that it borders so close (within a few metres) to the one end of Canal Walk.
Mo Rush April 26th, 2006, 08:52 PM yup 3 cranes at the site last time i checked
hey there
u shud visit http://www.spearheadprop.com/property/developments/
and post some developments from there...if u like.
Matthias Offodile April 27th, 2006, 12:06 AM that building is lovely. it reminds me somehow of FengShui architecture!
Cape Town is really the UNDISPUTED DIVA of Africa!
Jakes1 April 28th, 2006, 11:46 AM for some odd reason I just don't like this building. Reminds me of the atlantis resort. a bit themeparky if you ask me
JAB323 April 28th, 2006, 12:41 PM this looks awesome, I like the sky bridge over the water, pretty sweet.
dysan1 April 28th, 2006, 04:33 PM i agree with the "theme park" comment. i will only be able to tell how i fell bout this one when i see how it interacts with its surroundings
Harkeb May 1st, 2006, 01:50 AM The whole Century city complex looks so fake- theme park like. No serious architecture to be found there.
thryve May 1st, 2006, 02:13 AM Yes, it all seems quite tacky to me.
I really don't like Knightsbridge at all, or any of those Century City things... sorry ;)
-thryve
Durbsboi May 2nd, 2006, 10:15 AM I think the correct comment for this building is 'son of a bitch!'.
Although it looks alot like atlantis in the carrabean, its cool to have a building like this in SA
source26 May 2nd, 2006, 02:20 PM we have some bridge-buildings in israel, I can tell you not one of them looks nice.
those bridges in the sky look ALWAYS heavy, cast more shadows and you end up thinking if there werent better ideas..
dysan1 May 2nd, 2006, 03:04 PM ^^and they must be expensive to create? all the support and stuff
Durbsboi May 3rd, 2006, 09:15 AM But this is for a diff purpose, anybody watch 'after the sunset' or something along the lines of that, with piece brosnan & selam hayek, that woddy guy stayed on the brifge of Atlantis, you pay like $5 000 dollars per night, BUT what ever you want, when ever you want it they will get it for you, if you want a hummer limo to take you to the beach they will get it for you, as long as you give them a good notice, or if you feeling lonley at 3 in da morn & want a hot blonde pros, they will get it for you!
thryve May 3rd, 2006, 10:23 PM I think the whole development is garish, to be honest... it'll be INCREDIBLE and hip at first, then in a few years or decades... yucccckkk!!
As well, this building is not at all aesthetically pleasing... the floorplan better be pretty damn convenient...:P
-thryve
dysan1 May 3rd, 2006, 10:44 PM ^^ so u think the designs will become..as in your favourite phrase of times past... "cartoonish"?
thryve May 3rd, 2006, 11:14 PM No... they will just look really outdated and passe. They aren't really colourful and 'cartoonish' although I have changed my feelings on architecture and on that word, so I don't really use it anymore.
-thryve
datilguy May 28th, 2006, 05:26 AM More of this "fake" blibber-blabber.......I think its ok.....I like that its high and looks imposing. I assume its not very expensive?

hsark August 7th, 2006, 04:39 PM dude thanks for the update
Mo Rush August 7th, 2006, 06:16 PM was driving towards tygervalley just past the turn off for N1 city and i was like WTF...the century city area had like 12 cranes all over the place...i thought they were just kidding when they named the place a city...but it seems like century city is actually becoming one..
Caisson Boy August 7th, 2006, 06:29 PM I was thinking the same thing man. Hence my post in the Cape Town Discussion thread: Century City: Field of Cranes! All very low rise, but they are very busy there indeed.
Durbsboi August 8th, 2006, 09:00 AM Looking good, I love bridges on buildings, esp if they high up
datilguy August 12th, 2006, 03:56 AM That is looking good!!!
thryve August 12th, 2006, 07:07 PM Looks far far better than the rendering made it appear. I'm quite happy with this now :)

Taken by Andres de Wet, on 28 December 2006
annman August 9th, 2007, 09:16 PM Finally I joined a group that has had me excited for days at the goings on in the South African field of construction and development. I'm also pleased to see that the photographs I loaded onto Wikipedia after my last visit home over Christmas are being used in the forums.
SA BOY August 10th, 2007, 10:59 AM ah mr andries de wet I presume?
SA BOY August 10th, 2007, 11:00 AM introduce yourself at the into thread. what u doing in Orlando?
dysan1 August 10th, 2007, 02:08 PM This building i hated in render!! But it is really fantastic in real life. shoot the render company!
annman August 10th, 2007, 04:35 PM SA Boy, that would be right, I am the Andres de Wet who keeps posting pics of the Western Cape all over Wikipedia. Orlando... I sometimes do not know what I'm doing here, as this city has the architectural aesthetics of an Communist commune in Bulgaria. I'm an architectural designer here... would like to return to my "Mother" again! Yes, you're right, the rendering didn't accurately depict the building... actually quite impressed with the final building.
SA BOY August 10th, 2007, 06:03 PM tell us more mate as we welcome new blood into the forum. There is a thread on intros so we all know eho everyone is
annman August 12th, 2007, 01:58 AM I know I shouldn't be discussing this under Knightsbridge... but SA Boy, cannot find the "new members" thread... could you point me in the right direction? Thanks mate
SA BOY August 12th, 2007, 08:44 AM its in the shabeen
Tbite August 12th, 2007, 10:08 AM Nice.:applause:

Luf October 6th, 2007, 12:37 AM I love it! thanks for the pictures guys... I wish Joburg was getting stuff like this..
Have a great weekend
N.I.C.E. October 6th, 2007, 11:33 PM What a piece af crap. A violation of the South African landscape...
Lydon October 7th, 2007, 12:12 PM ROFL! So the landscape now tells up what we can and can not build? Go away troll...
N.I.C.E. October 7th, 2007, 01:43 PM LANDSCAPE has been the most important part of architecture since the first house was built. We lived in caves before, using the landscape. One is supposed to build according to the landscape and use the local traditions. Not fucking going to London stealing a KNIGHT and a BRIDGE and assemble them in Africa....
Lydon October 7th, 2007, 02:46 PM Oh EXCUSE US for building bridges! QUICK...tear them all down before someone sees them!!
N.I.C.E. October 7th, 2007, 07:34 PM Us!...Who do you represent? Build a bridge over a river or a kloof! thats logik to me.
joburg October 7th, 2007, 08:52 PM I like it... i think it's quite kewl and the bridge thing is quite unique for SA! The landscaping on the right looks a little scraggy though..
Durbsboi October 8th, 2007, 08:35 AM Bold design, I like it, nuff said
Lydon October 9th, 2007, 08:34 PM Us!...Who do you represent? Build a bridge over a river or a kloof! thats logik to me.
The people who live in South Africa...=/
Inertia October 9th, 2007, 09:07 PM Us!...Who do you represent? Build a bridge over a river or a kloof! thats logik to me.
If you look clearly there is a passage of water under the bridge, more than enough 'logik' to build one.
And for the record, i also like it :D
annman October 9th, 2007, 09:44 PM Architectural designer here... I am very sensitive to the scenery in Cape Town, I'm a stickler for the enviroment, both the urban and natural. Century City, given it's less than scenic location in the Cape Metro lends itself to be bolder and use the built environment to create the appeal. This building is innovative, bold, different and sleekly designed, therefore I give it a thumbs up.
Mo Rush October 9th, 2007, 10:06 PM saw it tonight..its cool..even though the architecture in the surrounds is less than desirable..the area has a great feel..cool breeze tonight..with the apartments and protea hotel overlooking the canal the atmosphere( for lack of a better word) was quite serene and beutiful..its gorgeous during a sunset with table mountain in the background
annman October 9th, 2007, 11:34 PM Lucky bastard Mo! You're description of your evening made me so so jealous... I want to come home now, feel that cool Cape breeze, that atmosphere, the mountain in the distance and cocktails at Cafe Monte Carlo on the canal!

Durbsboi October 10th, 2007, 09:18 AM Any idea who bought the apartments on the bridge?
N.I.C.E. October 10th, 2007, 03:06 PM Ok I see the river. But the point I want to stress is that the complex looks like a project in Dubai. Its got nothing to do with South Africa.
The developers and architects totally ignored anything Southafrican that could inspire to the design of this development. That means that they disregard South African culture, landscape tradition, history.etc.
The building is just trying to show off, or to be larny or fancy.IT is totally raping the landscape.
I see lots of people posting their approval of this building...... but nobody states why they like it. What does this building do? that is so great. Please tell me.
To me it is just a method of fleeing the country mentally and copying other old architecture. What is all this Tuscan architecture in SA. They dont even build Tuscan style in Tuscany anymore.
To me buildings like the Contitutional Court in Joburg is great. BPs HEAD Offices in Cape Town. The Legislature and Office Complex for Mpumalanga. And also the Apartheid Museums in PE and Jozi.
This is not about taste, its about good architecture.
Build Southafrican and respect the landscape, or at least build modern.
Respect your own heretige, is what I say.
LYDON, YOU SUCH A GIRL...
Inertia October 10th, 2007, 03:28 PM Firstly South African is two words, and i don't really see what's so offensive about this building. For one thing it is NOT tuscan, if you want to see tuscan come look at montecasino. I think it is a sleek, modern and innovative design, and I don't think it looks anything like something that was built in Dubai (it is under 200m).
That is why i like it, and please explain the definition of 'South African inspired', because currently there is nothing.
annman October 10th, 2007, 04:05 PM Let me see if I get some back up from the other Saffers here. This is my opinion on the foreign eye on SA usually, but let me bring an architectural spin to it. There is no one South African inspired design, the culture takes influences from the Dutch, Germans, British, Bantu, Malays, Khoi-San, French... South African culture and therefore architecture is not homogenous. The Constitutional Court, I agree, is a very Afro-contemporary building, but such a building would look pretty out of place in Cape Town. Cape Town has more European influences. Durban Indian and African influences and Johannesburg more African influences. However, in all cities, cultural and architectural influences overlap tremendously. I don't think you can claim one style is suited or endemic to the Cape Town cityscape. We have had so many influences already here... Cape Dutch, Victorian, Edwardian, Art-Deco, Post-Modern... I do not see anything wrong or un-South African about bringing new architectural creativity to the city to enhance our ever growing mosaic of different styles of architecture. Often people from overseas think they know exactly what's best for Africa, I respect opinion, but trust me... many do not get the complexity, dynamisism and versatility of South Africa.
Lydon October 10th, 2007, 05:10 PM Ok I see the river. But the point I want to stress is that the complex looks like a project in Dubai. Its got nothing to do with South Africa.

I couldn't give a flying duck as to what you think I am. The point is, that I like the building and so do many others. It's called TASTE...you should get some.

mike2005 September 21st, 2009, 10:12 AM Also what is this rubbish about Tuscan not being a South African style? Do any of you really think buildings look like that in Italy?!!!!!!! The fact is the so called Tuscan style is as South African as Cape Dutch and as such I seen nothing wrong with it.
And Knightsbridge is not a bad building anyway. Sometimes I think that people from overseas get upset when we build world class buildings: they would rather we only built grass huts as SA would then be a more interesting holiday destination for them!
Anyway rant over!
Durbsboi September 22nd, 2009, 08:33 AM 13 F mud hut, now there's a structural nightmare if there was ever one!
