Comcast Center: Growing on him
A neighbor has had his eye on the new addition
By Eric Mencher, The Philadelphia Inquirer
22 June 2007

Jun. 22--In the beginning, I looked down on the Comcast Center. From the vantage point of my nearby 11th-floor apartment, it was, for all too long, just an eyesore of a vacant city block. I knew it would grow tall, like a crazy urban weed, into another mirrored building, its only purpose to block the natural light in my living room.

And I just knew it would obscure my view of the squat, but somehow appealing, puzzle of Center City buildings that surround the dignified Arch Street Presbyterian Church. It would bring more SUVs and more cigarette butts on the sidewalk.

Cynicism on my part, it turns out.

I look up to the Comcast Center now, all 57 stories. And not just from my apartment, but from all over the city and beyond. Everywhere I go, it seems, the building has a presence. From early on, when it looked like a large concrete block, to its recent topping off, it now appears, even in its unfinished state, perfectly integrated into the city's skyline.

For the last year and a half, I've watched and photographed it intensely. Initially, I snapped from my apartment window: in the snow, the rain, the fog, and in gorgeous late-afternoon light. From there, it looked different minute by minute.

The buildings around it looked different, too, changed by its presence. "Nine floors now," a neighbor said to me many months ago. "Nineteen now," he said a short time later. Even at that height, the structure loomed large when I stepped out my front door.

So from my immediate neighborhood, I photographed it from every conceivable angle, framed by nearby buildings or peering over a church. Oddly, the cranes that rose with the Comcast Center seemed almost lifelike, and they became as important to my camera as the concrete core and steel beams themselves.

And then, almost overnight, the building became less an oddity and more a fact. It was here to stay, to be critiqued, to be ogled, to be sworn at when traffic tied up nearby. Photographically, its height allowed me to move farther and farther away, miles at times. What began to interest me most was how it sometimes could be just a part of the picture, often a bit player. It didn't have to dominate to announce its presence.

Now, I see it everywhere I go. I photograph it incessantly, as if I fear it will disappear and my project will end. I'm not even sure how I feel about its appearance. I liked it more when it seemed a skeleton, somewhat fragile, trying to make a name for itself.

These days, with its assertive, fancy-glass facade, it seems colder. But one thing is sure: The building's become part of my life and, I suspect, part of Philadelphia's, too.

AP Interview: Brian Roberts leads Comcast into a digital future
9 August 2007

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - By many measures, this should be the glory moment for cable TV industry leader Comcast Corp.

Comcast has stepped up to meet the competitive threat from satellite TV, and customers are rapidly embracing a "triple play" bundle of digital video, high-speed Internet and phone service, which not only brings in more money but makes customers less likely to jump ship.

But Comcast's 48-year-old chief executive, Brian Roberts, knows it's hardly time for the company to rest on its laurels.

Roberts, speaking in a wide-ranging interview with The Associated Press, said Comcast is aware that cable lags satellite TV in customer satisfaction surveys. The company is taking action, even as it greatly expands the premium digital services being offered.

"We have been accelerating our growth over the last three years and we are trying to catch up on delivering quality customer service," Roberts said. "There are many things we're doing to improve the customer experience and we're already seeing early successes."

Roberts said most of Comcast's technical workers will have by year's end handheld devices and laptop computers with wireless connections so they can better diagnose technical problems at customers' homes. He said the company also is developing cable boxes that can send messages back to Comcast to identify problems when they occur.

Although satellite may not be the threat it once was, Philadelphia-based Comcast is facing unprecedented competition from phone companies, which now offer high-speed Internet connections as well as video and phone.

Verizon Communications Inc. is building an all fiber-optic network directly to the home that can move data faster than cable lines. It is spending $23 billion to make fiber available to 18 million homes by 2010. The company's FiOS services promise ultra-fast Internet connections and digital video.

In response, Comcast and its cable brethren have come up with a new technical standard that Roberts says should be able to increase the broadband speeds they can offer by 20 to 30 times, from 6 megabits per second to 160 Mbps or faster for downloads.

Next year, Comcast will start limited deployment and testing of the technology, the latest version of Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications, or DOCSIS.

But Verizon says it can currently handle 100 Mps -- and even ramp up past cable's top speed. The phone company also insists that cable will have a very hard time even getting to 160 Mps.

Meanwhile, a nascent threat is emerging in a technology that could deliver television and movies over wireless Internet connections. Last week, the Federal Communications Commission set rules for the upcoming auction of a valuable swath of spectrum that could carry video, voice and Internet through obstructions and over far distances.

Companies such as Internet search leader Google Inc. have expressed interest in bidding on what could become a "third pipe" into consumer homes to challenge both cable and phone companies.

Roberts said Comcast is still studying its options and would find partners if it decides to bid.

For now, Comcast is content to sit on the 20 megahertz of wireless spectrum won last fall through SpectrumCo, a group comprising of cable companies and Sprint Nextel Corp.Comcast is majority owner of the group, which could decide to use the spectrum to start its own cell phone network.

Tall, bespectacled and lanky, Roberts has a gentle-spoken manner which belies a fervid competitive edge. He was an All-American squash player in college and captain of the U.S. men's team in his age group when it won a gold medal at the 2005 Maccabiah Games in Israel.

Just as Comcast the company is a work in progress, so too is its new home, a glass skyscraper that is taking shape in downtown Philadelphia. When it's completed next year, Comcast Center will be the tallest building between New York and Chicago, a fitting metaphor for the ambitions not only of Philadelphia but also one of its most prominent businessmen.

Roberts can see the new skyscraper from the window of his 35th-floor office, but the top of the new building will be even higher, at 57 floors.

Likewise, Roberts is trying to raise the bar ever higher for Comcast -- which was founded by his father, Ralph -- as it moves beyond its traditional business of providing TV programming.

Comcast is gaining on its competitors. On Thursday, Vonage Holdings Corp. said it added only 57,000 net customers in the second quarter for its Internet-based phone service, a field it pioneered, bringing its total to 2.45 million subscribers. Comcast has now surpassed Vonage with 3.1 million digital phone customers.

Comcast is equally active online as it capitalizes on the heavy traffic to its Comcast.net portal. The company bought movie ticketing site Fandango in April and is testing Fancast.com, an entertainment and video content site. Comcast also has created a video-sharing site, Ziddio, and one for horror movie fans, FearNet.

"We're the second-largest broadband company in the U.S. and we will be the fourth largest phone company by the end of the year and we've only been in that business for two and a half years," Roberts said.

Considering Philadelphia got a pretty late start on skyscrapers 1986 or so they have a great skyline. Of course the historic 200 ' buildings help.Lots of potential. Love the uniform pyramid look. Hopefully Philly keeps bombing the core with height and taper the edges.

Beautiful tower and a great addition to the skyline. I just can't believe that there is so much construction going on in all the major Northeastern cities, except Boston.

Boston is having a small boom. There are 5 or 6 300' to 400' footers going up, a 600' foot tower called South Station Tower and they are making progress with the 1000' footer. Nothing like NY or Philly, bit it's something that makes for a little excitment up here. In about 5 years, the skyline will have improved dramatically!

Belkin's super tower behind scheduleBoston Business Journal - by Michelle Hillman Journal staff

Belkin: Design updates slow tower plan
View Larger The proposed 1,000-foot Financial District tower proposed by entrepreneur Steve Belkin is behind schedule -- at least in part because he is redesigning the building to increase its square footage by 200,000 square feet to 1.7 million.

The tower is being designed by CBT/Childs Bertman Tseckares Architects Inc. of Boston after the lead architect, world-renowned Renzo Piano, dropped off the team in March. Belkin has not discussed the reasons for the split publicly, but Piano has said he was asked to increase the width of the skinny, 80-story tower he designed.

There are at least three design schemes being considered, including 76-, 77- and 79-story versions, according to a source who asked not to be named because the plans have not been finalized or made public. The Boston Redevelopment Authority's director of planning, Kairos Shen, recently confirmed the tower is expanding.

"Now it's grown to 1.7 million square feet," said Shen, addressing a crowd at a meeting of the Associated General Contractors of Massachusetts last week.

I used to hate the idea of a building being taller than One Liberty Place, since 1) that is my most favorite skyscraper in the world; and 2) because I felt that the skyline was perfectly balanced, especially when I drive north towards the city along I-95. But, the Comcast Center has grown on me, and I think the skyline will still look balanced from the south. One Liberty Place is still my favorite skyscraper, though.

By the way, did you guys know that a small statue of William Penn was placed at the top? I remember someone sending me the article, but I'll have to look for it again. For those of you that wonder why, here's a poem that explains the city's sports curse:

It looks like the interior on many of the lower floors is also complete. They have started to install the hanging gardens in the lobby and work is progressing on the outdoor plaza also. I imagine most of the concourse is complete as well although that is completely behind wraps right now. I believe Comcast is scheduled to begin moving in later in the year.

From this angle it seems as if the comcast has a antenna attatched to the top making it about 325 meters tall. Although its just a crane.

I love the way that crane looks like a mast. I wish the building had a mast, even if it were symbolic, especially in light of the business that Comcast is in.

I was thinkin the same thing a little while back. I really hope Philly breaks the 1,000ft. mark soon though.

Heres how it might turn out - Comcast Center tops out - Philly wins a major sports trophy. Soon, there will be plans to build another tower higher than that one, and then there will be a new curse on the city, called the "Curse of bad cable"

I agree that it would look good with a nice white antennae on top, but its not bad as is. Who knows, maybe in the future there will be a need for communications equipment on top.

Until the World Trade Center starts to rise, the Comcast Center will hold it's place as my personal fav skyscraper under construction.

My personal fav is the Empire State Building, 2nd fav is the Chrysler Building - I am not certain as to where to place Comcast on my list since I have never officially written down my "personal fav skyscrapers", but trust me, it's in that imaginary list.

A huge congrats to Liberty Property Trust - they built Liberty Place and now Comcast Center.

Those folks at Liberty are awesome - I love you guys!! Keep building more, please. :okay:

It's a real shame that the building didn't have two more floors, and would thus be over 1,000ft... BUt as we all know, projects are built to a different set of numbers. :)

Yeah your right. Personally I think we need more towers, (above the 1,000ft mark), the skyline looks empty. Not to many, just some good sizeable ones. The thing I love about Philly is that nature and the city are balanced. It's not a concrete jungle. Your not so overwhelmed by the industrial aspect of it.

Phillyguy, do you know why the state flag is at half-mast on the City Hall?

The state flag was a half-mast for the funeral service of Officer Charles Cassidy at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul on 1723 Race Street, just a few blocks away. His death really gripped the City.

Officer Charles "Chuck" Cassidy 1953 - 2007
GOD BLESS
