View Full Version : Beer-Sheva
RoM February 7th, 2004, 12:56 PM Be'er Sheva, the Negev's 'Capital' and the largest city in southern Israel, had its name given in the Bible, where it is said that Abraham dug wells in the city (Be'er), and swore his camaraderie with Elimelech, King of Plishtim (Sheva).
This shouthern metropolitan is the transportation, industry, science and cultural center of southern Israel and serves home to Israel's 4th largest university, the Ben-Gurion University, where more than 16,000 students attend. The Negev Research Center is also located within the city-limits.
During the passing decade the city has changed its skin, developed and doubled its population. The city is undergoing a construction boom for its scale, defined especially by high-rise constructions for mostly residential purposes.
This is where the city is located:

FortuneCookie March 16th, 2005, 08:13 AM Expect Be'er Sheva to really take off sometime in 2007 when the upgrading of the existing rail line to Tel Aviv is converted to a high speed, high capacity rail line. Initailly the ride will take just under 50 minutes and a train will depart every 20-30 minutes. Also, another brand new rail line from Be'er Sheva is currently being constructed to Ashkelon via the towns of Sderot, Netivot and Ofakim (and onwards to Tel Aviv via Ashdod). Also ,the line from Be'er Sheva to Dimona is being refurbished to allow passenger service. Construction has also just commenced on a brand new central bus station right next to the central train station in Be'er Sheva.

nice!!
Nick in Atlanta April 3rd, 2005, 10:19 PM Beer Sheva should be the second largest metropolitan area in Israel. It has plenty of room to grow, I believe. Can the average person in Beer Sheva afford to buy a detached house or do they have to live in an apartment?

Monkey May 22nd, 2005, 07:16 PM hehehehehehhehe Azazel;)))))))))
Azazel May 22nd, 2005, 07:17 PM I like Beer-Sheva very much. It should be the 3rd metro-area in Israel, after TA and Haifa.
Shohad May 22nd, 2005, 08:08 PM :) LOL
DarkBlueBoss May 23rd, 2005, 08:21 AM I guess he was British or Turkish.... :p
Palestinian would have been a better guess
Shohad May 23rd, 2005, 10:29 AM oh.. so we didnt score any points on the guess :(
your from palestine?
Monkey May 23rd, 2005, 04:44 PM ok stop it just ignore him!
Shohad May 23rd, 2005, 05:48 PM I don’t mind hearing his complaints for I am sure in the rightness of Israel’s policies.
There should be a thread to concentrate such discussions so others will be politic free
DarkBlueBoss May 24th, 2005, 09:03 AM no, its ok, i wont say much, and i will choose to ignore Zohar's comments,
however, this is where i am from, my grandfather, was kicked out of there in 1948, and now just like any other palestinian, i live abroad,
I just wish i live in a place where i can belong to, somewhere, where I know that this isnt temporary,
I mean, i live in Dubai - UAE , life is great here, however, all palestinians here, know this is temporary, cause it isnt our home
I also lived in canada, and i knew it was temporary, i was there for 7 years, and left,
i am not saying I am living a bad life, i am living a great life, business is good all is great.
however, i dont have what UAE people have, or what Canadian's have, which is a country in which i can say , this house i am building is my dream home, or this business is for the rest of my life, i cant, cause its all temporary, palestinian, (even though very well off abroad - not all ofcourse-) still live in a suspended state, where everything they do is temporary, think of many possiblities to many outcomes, ie. save money, we might have to leave this country, dont stay here too long, its not safe / politically stable, they worry about the development in the occupied territories, and how it will affect the policies of the countries they live in, its caution sign all their lives,
so again i say, this was my country, my home. .
Azazel May 24th, 2005, 12:42 PM Palestinian would have been a better guess
I am truly sorry for your loss, and although my opinion is your people by far have brought all the crap that has happened to you on yourselves, and your ancestors behaved much worse to mine whenever they could, I am not going to get into this discussion.
However, us living in the same country is unacceptable, not because of you proper.. you can be the best of people, but because of so many others that will bring this country to complete ruin, because as you may know, many of your people practice traditions that the general public in Israel deems completely inappropriate.
I do hope that all of your people will find homes, whenever in a palestinian state near the jewish one, or someplace else. This doesn't depend as much on us, as on you, and those that you call your brothers and allies, the arab nations. If they'd have any brains they'd allow you to stay and assimilate in their nations, because this process would be beneficial to both of you, unlike here.
Cheers.

So, my dear, at least YOU know how Jews have felt for the last 2,000 years...
Shohad May 24th, 2005, 04:28 PM Any further discussion will be in a new thread. I don’t mind opening one too
As I wrote in my previous post.
Scotty May 24th, 2005, 04:34 PM Its like two kids in a sandbox, lets say Billy and Mike.
Billy comes to the sand box first and play there some hours..
When Billey leaves, Mike comes and play there some hours..
And then Billy comes back to the sandbox.. what to do now? ;)
Of course they are kids so they will fight about it.. but two grown up men would not.
Shohad May 24th, 2005, 04:45 PM Yes Scotty its exactly like that! ;)
Hebrewtext May 24th, 2005, 04:52 PM Its like two kids in a sandbox, lets say Billy and Mike.

but you missed somthing:
Billy never left completly the sand box
and Mike never played there, and surly not by his own.
Shohad May 24th, 2005, 04:57 PM Stop this unsuccessful metaphor!!! (no offence Scotty ;) )
A thread was established for that stuff.
DarkBlueBoss May 24th, 2005, 05:04 PM So, my dear, at least YOU know how Jews have felt for the last 2,000 years...
jewdism , is not nationality its a religion, so you cant really say thats how jews felt, jews we're always welcome to come there and live,
we arent against jews, i personality am not against jews, they are good people just like any mulism or christian,
however, its the zionist movement (israel) which was created in the late 1800's is the problem,
jews have always lived in palestinine, and many parts of the world, just a muslim would live in indian, or morroco, or russia, or the US , you can say we should have Islam country,
anyway, i am not gonna get into that, cause i know i can never win this discussion. .
i was just heart broken to see this beautiful city, that was my home . . that is all, and i hope this will be the end of this discussion,
nice skyline though... :)
Monkey May 24th, 2005, 05:22 PM this beautiful city built by jews......

beer-sheva is modern city...
i hear about planning about subway or metro on this city
Kappa21 November 7th, 2005, 11:17 PM ^^^ what?!?!
A Subway?
Thats crazy.....
where can they possibly build it...
and it would be soooo fucking hot to go under it..
unless they do what the israelites did and make a underground tunnel that was warm in the winter and cold in the summer ;)
I did an archelogy dig somewhere between the negev and jerusalem (???) and saw it first hand..
other than that, it might be a good idea..
who would use it the most? The bedouins?
Dor. IL November 11th, 2005, 09:08 PM ^^ beer-sheva is big city(200,000-250,000 people) so it is good something like metro or sub-way...

gilad500 November 11th, 2005, 11:25 PM ^^Subways are for citys with 1,500,000 people at least...otherwise its not effective...look at Haifa for example, it have a Metro, but nobody uses it....there are too few who uses it, and its just usless...
Dor. IL November 11th, 2005, 11:41 PM ^^
in hafia it was bad becouse they dont bulid the stations at important places...
so no subway a light-train....
Kappa21 November 12th, 2005, 12:53 AM Beer Sheva is booming ofcourse.
Just so you know, most cities got a subway when they were just close to a million people.
You cant build subway for many things and one of them is if you have alot of buildings its hard to make the underground and the station.
Haifa is problematic, because its in the core, but they built it in a way that there is only a few stations... I mean....if they were creative, tey can make one that goes to the tip of Haifa/Atlit and onto the Krayot and Akko.... but then again, you got a train that does the same.
The problem is, i view the Israel Train system much like a light rail/subway...
thats coming from a North American :D
Dor. IL November 12th, 2005, 12:25 PM ^^^^ right man...
now in israel you can drive on tran from beer-sheva to Nariha in our + - (non-stop).
Beer-sheva south israel-Nariha north Israel.
so israel is Big subway (-:
Kappa21 November 12th, 2005, 08:35 PM The only problem is, is this 'mega subway' does not run very effeciently....... so it takes time and its hard....
but i tried it from the krayot to Akko and from the Krayot to Merkaz Haifa and it was actually very effective.....
I think, that we should start building most of the Gallile by now and make it look very nice instead of neglecting it and having Aravi run it :)

goodmood10 November 27th, 2005, 09:55 PM it's called beer sheva because of the story of Abraham , it's believedthat this is the place where Abraham and avimelech vowed. vow in hebrew is - shvu'a , the name sheva derives from this word. be'er is well in hebrew (the well of the vow, this is the meaning of the name)

Prehistory and Biblical era
An archeological site called "Tel Beer-Sheva", a few kilometers north-east of modern day Beer-Sheva has evidence of being populated since the 4th millennium BC. It was destroyed and rebuilt many times during its history.
[edit]
Etymology and the Biblical narrative
Biblically, the site of Beersheba is mentioned in two of the three Genesis stories of a wife confused for a sister as a location where an oath of non-aggression was made between the Philistines, represented by a king named Abimelech, and the Israelites. The bible describes the oath being made on two separate occasions by the Israelites, once represented by Abraham, and once by Isaac. Beersheba is also mentioned in Joshua 19:2. Beersheba was the southernmost city of Israel in Biblical times hence the expression "from Dan to Beersheba" to describe the whole kingdom.
Between the two Abimelech stories, there are several different etymologies given for the origin of Beersheba's name:
* in memory of the oath of Abraham and Abimelech (well of the oath)
* in memory of seven wells dug by Isaac (seven wells), though only 3 or 4 are identified
* in memory of the oath of Isaac and Abimelech (well of the oath)
* in memory of the seven ewes which stood witness to Abraham and Abimelech's oath (well of the seven).
In the midrash, which generally exhibits a xenophobic attitude toward the Philistines, the last of these is seen as particularly reproachful, and the setting aside of these ewes is interpreted to have directly condemned seven righteous descendants of Abraham to death by the hand of Abimelech's descendants, namely condemning Hophni, Phinehas, Samson, Saul, and Saul's three sons, to death by the Philistines. In addition, the midrash extends the numerology to also be the ultimate cause of the destruction of seven sacred objects - named as the Tabernacle of the Congregation, the Second and First Temples, and unnamed sacred objects in Gilgal, Nob, Gideon, and Shiloh - and the reason that the Ark of the Covenant comes to abide amongst the Philistines for seven months.
The underlying origin of the still existing site is uncertain, though it certainly exhibits archaeological signs of religious use. There are many wells on the site, but only 3 are dated as far back as the early first millennium, each having been refaced by the romans. These are likely to be the three wells mentioned in the Isaac story - Esek, Sitnah, and Rehoboth. The presence of 3 rather than 7 wells, together with the awkwardness of interpreting Beersheba as seven wells, which grammatically should be written as Shebabeer, has lead this possibility to be generally discounted as a folk etymology.
The stories also state that a religious foundation was made by the patriarchs at the site, with Isaac building an altar, and Abraham an Asherah grove. Until the reforms of Josiah, it appears that Beersheba was regarded as an holy place of great importance, it being frequently mentioned in the later parts of the bible as a noteworthy location for people to have an association with. In critical thought, it is hence seen as something that needed to be explained by the biblical authors, who chose to use folk etymologies and myths to do so. The most likely etymology to be correct is that which renders Beersheba as well of the oath, though whether the oath refers to a single oath that took place in that location, or in fact refers to the general religious practice on the site - making of oaths - is a matter of debate.
According to the documentary hypothesis, both the Elohist and Yahwist used a pre-existing source or folk-tale surrounding the site in producing their narrative of an oath having been made between a patriarch and Abimelech, the regional philistine overlord. Where they differ is in the atmosphere of the story - Abraham makes a fair treaty with Abimelech on friendly terms, but Isaac's makes his treaty with Abimelech in an atmosphere of squabbling.
[edit]
Later history
The latest inhabitants of Tel Beer-Sheva were the Byzantines, which abandoned the city at the 7th century. The Turkish Ottomans who had controlled Israel since the 16th century barely paid any interest to Beersheba until the end of the 19th century. At the beginning of the 19th Century Beersheba was noted by European pilgrims as ruined, with a well and Bedouin living nearby.

Kappa21 August 31st, 2009, 08:22 PM That double-pedestrian bridge its really awesome by architectural design
Its not a double pedestrian bridge.
Its only 1 way. The top is for a roof. Probably shelter when it rains or when its really hot outside for some cooling off...
but definately not a double pedestrian when you look at it Greeko.

Two leading clubs in Beer Sheva are:The Forum and Baraka.
There are also smaller clubs: Factor (their owner is the same owner of The Forum. btw some big crime family have their hands in this club so they kinda preventing other clubs to rise up. they don't want competition), Interpol (students club), Barbeat (pool-dance bar), and more.
I think there is branch of Dublin.

Completely safe and most of the people know English everywhere in Israel. I don't think that you can spend a few days in Beer-Sheva itself- a single day is enough. The more interesting places are in the South- staying a few days in Mitzpe Ramon or somewhere around there is much better.

Truthfully, I wouldn't even recommend spending a day in Be'er Sheva. It's not a pretty city and there's not much to see there, except for the Beduin Market, which is quite interesting. I would more strongly recommend exploring the beautiful landscapes of the desert, including Mitzpe Ramon (one of the largest and most spectacular craters in the world) and Ein Ovdat, a beautiful canyon/spring oasis in the middleof the desert.
And most people in Israel speak English, so language shouldn't be an issue.

There is always something to see in Beer Sheva and if he doesnt mind tracking down and commuting everyday, he can get a good deal on the lodging too!

I find that most people in the Center are English-speaking (including Jerusalem) than elsewhere..... thats just from my POV

I don't think so. Though the most of the residents are students.

Herbie Fully Loaded April 30th, 2010, 01:54 PM Nice pics :okay:! It must be great to have a nice walk or a picnic in that park, it looks so green and peaceful and so relaxing with all those palms mediterranean style.
alangm13 April 30th, 2010, 04:34 PM idk why some people say that beer sheva is ugly and old. According to the pics it seems to be pretty good. Beautiful. In fact, it seems to be so tidy, clean, and all is so new... sometimes even more than tel aviv. May be people that live there or have been there could make a better opinion.
A question. How is the growth of the real state in beer sheva? A mean... Is beer sheva growing faster?
ZOHAR April 30th, 2010, 06:57 PM its has problematic population

Some parts of Beer-Sheva looks beautiful but some looks ugly. It's just we don't put the ugly pics.
I like the city and i think it's has potential in the future. The think that i like the most is the wide roads in the city.
Today i heard on the radio report of profitable invesments in appartments and Beer-Sheva is in the last place.
Kappa21 May 3rd, 2010, 07:00 PM I like Beer Sheva. A little warm, but its a huge city compared to all our mini-cities that are grappling for air space cause of no room...
