New domestic airlines have started in the Gulf and the Gulf also has good international airlines so I think Middle East Aviation should have its own thread. Liverys, news, pictures, airports, etc are examples of what one could post in this thread.

Very nice and fresh idea for the forum.

I enjoyed looking at the pics, and i have to say Gulf Air has the best looking paint jobs on thier planes. Then Qatar Airways with their Asian Games Theme.

I think sooner or later the airline industry in the gulf will be more liberalized. Then will see real cut throat competation, espically if the govt stops backing some of the airlines.

Today, am try to be objective here without smiling, Qatar Airways, in terms of quality and customer service bets all other airlines by a mile. In terms of routes I think Emirities has the most routes. A strong competatior is Saudi Airline if they choose to serve markets other than the Saudi one, which will probably be impossible.

Iraq, Palistinain, Yeman, Egypt and Israel airlines are probably the least likely Id fly with.

Iranian airways was started in May 1944. In 1961 it was merged with another company called Pars Airways (started in 1954) and renamed Iran Air.

Emirates opens exclusive new lounge at Paris' Charles De Gaulle Airport

Emirates, the Dubai-based international airline, continued the expansion of its network of dedicated passenger lounges with the official opening of its exclusive lounge in Terminal 2C at Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport today.

In keeping with Emirates lounges around the world, this new dedicated facility for Emirates passengers boasts a wide array of amenities. These include extensive seating areas with a large number of comfortable leather armchairs, flat-screen TVs showing the latest news and lifestyle programmes from a selection of global channels, and business centres with complimentary broadband and wireless LAN access at the computer workstations as well as for laptop users. The lounge also features hotlines to both Skywards and Emirates Call Centres.

All Emirates lounges, including this one at Charles de Gaulle, also offer shower facilities so passengers can freshen up prior to their flight, which is especially useful for those passengers who are in transit.

Emirates passengers travelling from Paris will now be able to enjoy an extensive menu of complimentary hot and cold gourmet dishes having the choice of formal or informal seating in the dining area accompanied by a full bar service, including champagne, as well as Emirates' trademark attentive service from the dedicated lounge staff.

The opening of this new lounge at Charles de Gaulle coincides with the airline's move to Terminal 2C at the airport. A move which offers Emirates passengers excellent onward connections throughout France via the TVG high-speed train network.

Tim Clark, President Emirates Airline, said at the opening of the lounge in Paris:

"The development of Emirates lounges around our expanding network is testament to how much emphasis we put on customer service. Our customers are at the heart of everything we do and we are sure that they will enjoy this new facility at Charles de Gaulle, as much as they enjoy our existing lounges, including our excellent new lounge at John F Kennedy International Airport in New York."

'We are constantly seeking ways to enhance the travel experience for our passengers, both in the air and on the ground, and our lounges form an integral part of that strategy. Emirates lounge development programme is a natural extension of the customer service initiatives we provide for our Business and First Class passengers, many of whom will already have begun to experience the end-to-end service offer by enjoying our complimentary chauffeur drive to and from the airport.'

Emirates Lounges are modelled on the carrier's award-winning lounges at Dubai International Airport, and this new lounge, as well as others set to open during the next few months, are a part of Emirates' $13 million investment programme to install lounges at key airports across its global network offering Emirates' First and Business Class passengers - as well as Gold members of its Skywards frequent flyer programme - a place to work or rest in luxury prior to departure.

Ensuring that Emirates' lounges surpass their customers expectations in terms of comfort and facilities takes a strong commitment from staff working behind the scenes with third party suppliers and organisations to make them happen on time and on budget. This lounge was created in a record time for Emirates of just four months from final selection to completion.

This involves a great commitment from all involved internal departments from Facilities Management to the Airport Services team in Dubai working with those in Paris and around the world to create such quality products around Emirates' ever-increasing number of destinations.

Emirates offers dedicated lounges at, Auckland, Brisbane, Dubai, London Gatwick, New York's JFK and Perth.

Report: Etihad Airways in sponsorship talks with Manchester United
Posted: 22-12-2005 , 08:35 GMT
The owners of Manchester United, one of the world's most famous football clubs, are still searching for the right sponsorship deal to replace Vodafone. The Times reports that the British club has been demanding as much as £20 million a season for shirt sponsorship but he has been forced to revise such demands downwards.

The club representatives are in talks with several companies, most notably Etihad Airways, the United Arab Emirates carrier, which is believed to have offered about £8 million - about £1 million less than Vodafone are paying.

United consider the offer too low, but many in the industry believe that, with the market a little depressed, the club may have to settle for about £12 million.

Etihad Airways aims at increasing its exposure in the UK and recently announced that it would begin daily Manchester to Abu Dhabi flights, possibly in March next year.

The airline officially launched its services on November 5, 2003. By the end of 2004, the airline ended with as many as 16 destinations across Asia, Europe and the Middle East. By 2010, Etihad plans to take this figure to nearly 70 destinations.

Malév and Royal Jordanian get ready to board, with both airlines making significant progress towards their oneworld membership, also early in 2007.
Malév will considerably expand the alliance's network in central and east Europe, adding its attractive Budapest hub as a key hub for the alliance.
Royal Jordanian is the first carrier from an Arab region to join any of the global airline groupings, expanding oneworld's presence in the Middle East and Gulf.
Until the joining processes are complete, it is business and service as usual for all three airlines and oneworld

I like the Emirates livery and the Qatar one. I think GulfAir took some ideas from EL-AL's livery, especially that stipe flying from the bottom of the A/C towards the tail. Btw the GulfAir tail drawing is beautiful 2...

Emirates is to launch flights to to the exotic destination of Sao Paulo, Brazil on October 1, 2007. The flight, which will be operated via Emirates’ home base, Dubai, is the airline’s first service to South America.

On the Dubai – Sao Paulo sector, Emirates will fly its brand new Boeing 777-200LR – the first of its ten on order, expected to be delivered this summer. HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline & Group said, “We have been looking to expand our operations in the Americas for some time, and we are delighted to be able to launch our first South American destination when we receive our first 777-200LR later this year.

“Sao Paulo is the commercial heart of Brazil and a key financial and industrial centre in Latin America, and Dubai, the Middle East’s premium hub for business and tourism. We believe this new direct air link (between Dubai and Sao Paulo) will stimulate more trade and tourism exchange between these two thriving economies, and we are confident our service would prove popular with both business and leisure travellers.”
Emirates’ technologically-advanced 777-200LR will offer eight luxurious private suites in First class, 42 of its latest lie-flat seats in Business class, and generous space for 216 passengers in Economy. The 777-200LR will also offer shippers up to 18 tonnes of cargo capacity.

EK261 will depart Dubai at 0930hrs on all days except Thursdays and arrive in Sao Paulo at 1800hrs. EK262 will depart Sao Paulo at 0125hrs every day except Fridays, and arrive in Dubai at 23:05.

No problem Mehdi. Actually, there are 2 beliefs:
1. The engine caught fire just as the plane was taking off, which prompted BG to hault the takeoff. This action applied pressure on the nosegear due to the sudden force of the brakes--which collapsed the nosegear.

2. Parts of a wheel of a Cathay Pacific Cargo Plane (B 747-200),which landed in DXB earlier that morning was the cause of the BG's crash, since it mengled with the wheels and/or engines upon take-off.

ITs pretty scary and thank God the BG pilots managed not to flip or crash the airplane more significantly.

^^ true, thanks for that info,

jeez parts of a B742? that is similar i suppose to what happened to that concorde no? parts of metal mengled in the wheel, then flicked back up into the engine/fuel tank, the conocrde was on fire while it took off

the pilots managed it very well, WELL DONE BIMAN! :okay:

Qatar Airways has won rights to launch daily services to Melbourne under a bilateral air services deal with the Gulf nation, Qatar.

Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Mark Vaile announced the successful negotiation of the new arrangements allowing Qatar's national carrier to operate services to and from Melbourne.

Australian carriers will gain access to Europe through Qatar's capital Doha under the agreement which Mr Vaile said was an important milestone in the development of Australia's aviation relations with the Middle East.

He said the government valued the contribution airlines like Qatar Airways can make to Australia.

Mr Vaile said Qatar's government had recognised the significance Australia placed on the issue of fair and equitable access for Australian carriers to developing aviation hubs.

"Without the ability to operate services through intermediate hubs such as Doha to long haul destinations in Europe, Australian carriers cannot compete effectively on the world stage," he said.

Under the revised air services agreement finalised in Doha on March 15, Qatar Airways can launch the daily service to Melbourne and introduce a second daily service to another Australian city from 2008.

Mr Vaile said regional tourist destinations had the opportunity to benefit from the new agreement.

"Australia is an attractive and competitive tourist destination and it will now be up to airports and tourism operators to make the most of the opportunities created by the arrival of Qatar Airways," he said.

The government would continue to encourage increased airline operations into Australia but success would depend on the willingness of state governments, airport operators and tourism bodies to support the new business, he said.

He also called on the Victorian Government to immediately scrap the stamp duty it imposes on international airline insurance contracts.

"The duty not only contravenes Australia's international obligations but represents an unnecessary cost to international airlines and possible impediment to growth," he said.

Royal Jordanian negotiating for 12 787s through direct purchase and lease contracts

Royal Jordanian's President and CEO, Eng. Samer A. Majali, said that the strategic decision to purchase Boeing's revolutionary twin-aisle jet positions the airline to achieve its plans for continued growth and increased profitability.

Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Royal Jordanian today announced an order for Boeing's highly sought-after 787 Dreamliner, confirming two unidentified customer purchases previously listed on Boeing's Orders & Deliveries website.

The announcement was made at the World Economic Forum, an event sanctioned by the Jordanian royal family and held at the King Hussein Bin Talal Convention Center on Jordan's Dead Sea. Royal Jordanian is the first Middle East airline to announce an order for Boeing's 787, the fastest-selling new commercial airplane ever built. Royal Jordanian plans to confirm the purchase of its two outstanding options before the end of the year. The airline also intends to take an additional eight Boeing 787s on lease. The first aircraft will join the fleet in 2010.

'Today marks a milestone in Royal Jordanian's proud history,' Majali said. 'Looking to our plans for future growth, we see the superior economics and unique passenger comfort features of the 787 bringing even greater recognition to Royal Jordanian as we fulfill our commitment to provide world-class service to our passengers.'

Royal Jordanian was created in 1963 by a Royal Decree issued by His Majesty the late King Hussein, who was also known to be an excellent pilot. In 2006, Royal Jordanian received Air Transport World's Phoenix award in recognition of the airline having gone through a major transformation of its strategy and operations, resulting in consecutive years of profitable growth. Royal Jordanian also received a merit award from The Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) for 2006 Airline Turnaround of the Year.

Beginning April 1, Royal Jordanian became a member of the oneworld™ airline alliance, offering even more extensive connectivity and flight options for its passengers traveling globally. Royal Jordanian continues to experience successive annual growth, with passenger loads showing a 20% increase from 2006.

'Royal Jordanian's distinguished history and recognized success over the last three years is admirable,' said Lee Monson, Boeing Commercial Airplane's vice president of sales for the Middle East & Africa. 'It's very satisfying for Boeing to see such a well-respected airline choosing the 787 Dreamliner as the core airplane for its international long-haul service.'

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, scheduled for entry into service in 2008, provides passengers with a better flying experience, and operators with a more efficient commercial jetliner.

With the 787 Dreamliner, Boeing continues its leadership and innovation with a mostly composite airplane that uses significantly less fuel per passenger than similarly sized airplanes. The 787 is designed for the environment with lower carbon emissions and quieter takeoffs and landings. Inside the airplane, passengers will find cleaner air, bigger windows, more stowage space and improved lighting.

Since the 787 launch in April 2004, 44 customers worldwide have logged 568 orders, making the Dreamliner the most successful commercial airplane launch in history.

Present at the press conference were the Jordanian Minister of Transport, the American Ambassador in Amman, RJ's Chairman of the Board of Directors and a number of officials.

Qatar Airways seals $17bn Airbus order

doha • Qatar Airways yesterday confirmed a $16bn order for 80 Airbus A350s making the airline the single largest customer of the European aircraft manufacturer’s newest commercial jet.

The airline has also increased its orders for the widebody Airbus A380s from two to five aircraft, a release said. A separate agreement for three additional A380s worth almost $1bn in total was also announced.

At a press conference held on the opening day of the Paris Air Show at Le Bourget yesterday, Qatar Airways’ Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Akbar Al Baker confirmed the orders in the presence of Airbus President Louis Gallois.

The A350 deal replaces original plans announced two years ago by Qatar Airways to purchase 60 A350s. The airline has now opted for the redesigned Extra Widebody (XWB) version of the A350 in three different variants. Qatar Airways’ commitment announced yesterday is for 20 Airbus A350-800s, 40 A350-900s and 20 A350-1000s, the latter being a stretch version of the new aircraft. Qatar Airways is the launch customer of the A350-1000XWB variant.

The A350-XWB, depending upon variant, will have between 260 and 350 seats in Qatar Airways’ typical two-class configuration and will be used to operate on key routes across the airline’s international network covering Europe, Africa, Far East and the Indian subcontinent.

Deliveries are set to begin in August 2013 and will gradually replace the Airbus A330s, which are currently the backbone of Qatar Airways’ fleet. Al Baker said the announcement finally ended months of protracted negotiations with Airbus over the design of the A350-XWB. “This deal has been a long time coming but clearly demonstrates Qatar Airways’ commitment to this new generation aircraft,” he said, speaking at a press conference at Le Bourget.

“This large A350-XWB order, comprising all three variants, underlines the confidence that Qatar Airways has in Airbus’ capability to produce an outstanding, new generation twin-engine widebody aircraft for entry into service from 2013.

Rolls-Royce, meanwhile, announced the largest-ever firm engine order for its civil aerospace business in an order with Qatar Airways worth $5.6bn at list prices, which includes a TotalCare long-term services agreement. The order is for Trent XWB engines to power the new fleet of 80 Airbus A350XWB twinjets.

Qatar Airways has, and will continue to, work with Airbus and Rolls-Royce in the definition and optimisation of an outstanding family of aircraft.“

Qatar Airways is the largest Airbus operator in the Middle East, currently flying 58 all-Airbus aircraft, including the A319s, A320s, A321s, A330s and A340s. Qatar Airways is also a launch customer of the with five now on order for deliveries beginning in 2010.

MENAFN - Arab News) RIYADH, 26 June 2007 — The National Air Services (NAS) has allocated SR15.5 billion for the purchase of 98 new aircraft in the next five years, NAS Chairman Ayed Al-Jeaid said in a press conference at the company's headquarters here yesterday.

He said arrangements for the acquisitions were made with different airlines such as Airbus, Boeing, Gulfstream, Dassault and Raytheon.

"Following the signing of a number of purchase agreements, NAS will increase its fleet size to include 142 over the next five years, thus becoming one of the most significant companies operating in the commercial and private aviation sectors in the Middle East," Al-Jeaid said.

NAS, the largest and fastest growing independent provider of aviation services in the Middle East which currently operates 44 aircraft, is the region's sole provider of both commercial and private aviation services through its four distinct strategic business units, offering its customers innovative and total solutions to meet their various aviation needs.

The company is also the Middle East representative of NetJets, offering fractional ownership and leasing options, and has been providing this service for the last six years along with full portfolio of aircraft management services solutions.

To complement its package of products, NAS also offers two commercial services.

These include Al-Khayala Airlines, a scheduled all-business class service between Riyadh and Jeddah as well as regional flights to Dubai, and the recently launched NASair, which is the Kingdom's first domestic budget carrier.

Al-Jeaid said in the first half of 2007, NAS finalized four of the biggest deals — in terms of quantity and quality — made by the private sector in the history of aviation markets in the Middle East.

"The latest of these deals was announced during the Paris Airshow at Le Bourget where NAS signed agreements with Airbus for the purchase of 38 Airbus 320 aircraft valued above SR9 billion, and with Dassault Falcon to buy 20 of its new large cabin business jet, the Falcon 2000LX, for over SR1.9 billion," he said.

He added that last month, NAS also announced a similar deal with Gulfstream Aerospace Company to buy 20 long-range G450 business jet at a cost of SR2.6 billion, only four months after the company purchased 20 new Hawker 750 aircraft from Raytheon at a cost of SR1 billion.

"NAS will finance the aggressive acquisition plans via local, regional and international financial institutions. It will also rely on creative financial instruments that will provide attractive investment venues to capital market investors," Al-Jeaid said. He said that the aircraft selection is the result of extensive studies and vigorous negotiations with the manufacturers aimed at building long-term partnerships.

"We have taken into account the diverse needs of the company's services and its aircraft requirements in terms of frame size, load capacity, performance levels and operational cost," he said.

He added that the recent announcement with Airbus constitutes the core fleet of NASair and allows the new budget carrier to operate new domestic and international destinations in the near future.

Last December, the Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation granted NAS the first license to operate scheduled domestic flights from Riyadh and in February, launched the Kingdom's first budget carrier under the commercial name "NASair."

The addition of 60 aircraft from three different categories is expected to enhance the company's aircraft fractional ownership and lease program (NetJets) and cater to the needs of the largest segment of the private aviation sector throughout the region.

Al-Jeaid said that strengthening NAS' fleet and providing clients with innovative aviation solutions through professional teams play pivotal roles in expanding the company's clientele base across many segments of traveling community in the Kingdom and in the Middle East.

"Now, more than ever, our clients are interested in alternatives to secure outstanding service with better return. NAS also seeks to achieve a rewarding return on investment for the company's shareholders," he said.

NAS is expecting to sell a portion of the company via IPO next year to share its success with Saudi investors in the capital market.

Al-Jeaid added that the company is continuously working on recruiting high caliber professionals from the national and international markets as part of its ongoing employment strategy for the needs of the company's strategic business units.

He pointed out that sound economic indicators, heightened corporate travels, the need for efficient travel services and the liberalization of many of the region's aviation sector "leads to a travel market boom and the creation of a healthy environment with many attractive opportunities."

"Our fleet expansion plans are due to the high demand for private and commercial aviation services which the region is likely to witness in the next 10 years," he said.

According to recent statistics, Middle East is witnessing phenomenal growth rates compared to other international markets with 8 percent and 7 percent annual growth rates for the private and commercial aviation, respectively.

MUSLIM MAN BOOTED OFF A PLANE

http://icnewcastle.icnetwork.co.uk/sundaysun/news/tm_headline=muslim-booted-off-north-plane&method=full&objectid=19424703&siteid=50081-name_page.html
A young Muslim was booted off a plane at a North airport after asking cabin crew if he could pray before his flight, we can reveal.

The incident happened when the country was on high alert last weekend after an alleged terrorist attack at Glasgow airport.

A source told us that the man - who has not been named - boarded a Thomsonfly flight at Newcastle International Airport bound for a holiday in Malaga, Spain, with friends.

He asked staff if he could go in the galley area - which can be curtained off from passengers - and offer prayers before the flight took off.

However - according to our source - the flight attendant asked the plane's captain who promptly ordered the man off the aircraft.

Story continues
ADVERTISEMENT

Northumbria Police officers were waiting for the man in the departure lounge and searched him under terrorism laws.

All they found was a bottle of water, used by Muslims to wash themselves before prayer, a compass to ensure he was facing the holy city of Mecca, and a traditional prayer-mat.

The flight - TOM 4125 from Newcastle to Malaga - took off an hour later than its scheduled 4.20pm departure time last Sunday.

A spokeswoman for Thomson said: "The captain has the right to remove passengers from a flight if he feels their behaviour is detrimental to other customers. For legal reasons, we are unable to comment any further."

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: "We were called to the airport just before 5.15pm on Sunday after concerns were raised about a passenger.

"We attended and searched the man and found that no offence had been committed and everything was in order. The man was not arrested."

Azad Ali, executive leader of the counter-terrorism section of the Muslim Safety Forum, which liaises with police forces, appealed through the Sunday Sun for the man to come forward.

He said: "If the man feels hard done by then he will be upset by this.

"If he feels it difficult to gain resolution in Newcastle he can log onto our website and email us his details.

"We will then go to the Association of Chief Police Officers and ask them to look into it.

"However, it looks as if the airline itself is guilty of over reaction in this incident.

"There is a tendency for some people to blame an entire community for the actions of individuals. It's guilt by association."

The drama unfolded at a time that the security level was at its highest following the abortive car bombs found in London and the attack on Glasgow Airport where two men drove a Jeep Cherokee into the main terminal building.

The vehicle had gas cylinders on board . . . which have the potential to cause huge explosions. It is believed the gas cylinders and the car came from Teesside.

A total of eight suspects, all of them connected with the NHS, have been arrested since the Glasgow airport attack and the two failed car bombs discovered in central London the previous day.

Govt. to sell majority in Kuwait Airways

Kuwait: The Kuwaiti government wants to sell an 80 per cent stake in loss-making national carrier Kuwait Airways, state news agency KUNA said on Tuesday.

Acting Parliamentary Affairs Minister Abdulwahed Al Awadhi told KUNA the government wanted to sell 40 per cent of the firm in an initial public offering (IPO).

Another 40 per cent would be offered in an auction for firms listed on the Kuwaiti stock market, while the government would keep a 20 per cent stake.

KAC staff would be entitled to an unidentified percentage of the IPO at a "preferential" price, KUNA said, without elaborating. IPOs in the Gulf Arab state are often only open to
Kuwaitis, a main government tool to share wealth.

Parliament's financial and economic committee earlier on Tuesday approved the government plan to sell the carrier which now goes to the floor.

Under the government plan, KAC staff will get incentives to leave the company, which analysts see as overstaffed. Employees would be entitled to a five-year salary if they decided to leave or could transfer to a government body at the same salary level.

KAC management has been keen to privatise the company to make it more competitive, but many parliamentarians have rejected such as moves, saying this would endanger jobs for Kuwaitis.

KAC, which has posted losses for several years, last month placed an order with local firm Aviation Lease and Finance Co. to supply it with 19 Airbus and Boeing planes. The deal is pending cabinet approval.

Qatar Airways First Class is best in world

DOHA • Qatar Airways has once again been honoured in the annual Skytrax World Airline Awards with three accolades in this year's survey, including being named as having the ‘Best First Class’ in the world.

The airline secured the ‘Best Airline in the Middle East’ award for the second year running, while cabin crew once again won top honours as ‘Best in the Middle East’ for the fifth year running, said a release.

Qatar Airways also saw its global ranking rise to be named among the top five airlines in the world in the annual survey of almost 15m international travellers spread across 90 nationalities. The airline's global ranking rose to 4th position. The elite top five group features airlines from the service-oriented Far East.

Earlier this year, Qatar Airways held onto Skytrax's ‘Five Star’ award for excellence and service quality.

Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Akbar Al Baker said he was honoured to see such prestigious awards bestowed on the airline.

"We have come a long way since we launched our airline just 10 years ago and these awards clearly demonstrate that Qatar Airways is firmly in the top league of international airlines.

"I would like to thank the staff at Qatar Airways around the world for their tremendous dedication and commitment to the job they do so well. Our cabin crew have once again proved that they have what it takes to deliver the best levels of service in the skies.

"Passengers have voted with their feet and I would like to thank them for taking the time to take part in the survey. Qatar Airways strives to be the best and it is only a matter of time before we walk away with the top award - ‘Best Airline in the World’."

Qatar Airways' First Class product includes a 180 degree flat bed onboard its long-range Airbus A330s and A340s, while the latter aircraft also features a unique First Class lounge for passengers to relax and unwind at 35,000 feet.

In November 2006, Qatar Airways opened the world's first passenger building dedicated to its First and Business Class passengers at Doha International Airport.

The $90m Premium Terminal features exclusive check-in, duty-free shopping, fine dining, spa treatments, games room, business centre and medical room.

The award for cabin crew was based on a number of criteria, including professionalism of staff in handling passengers, efficiency, problem-solving, enthusiasm, friendliness and appearance.

Skytrax Chief Executive Edward Plaisted said the 2007 survey was the longest and biggest ever featuring the most number of respondents in interviews conducted between August 2006 and June this year.

The awards are recognised around the world and are renowned for being the only truly global, independent passenger survey.

"All-round excellence is the most accurate description of a good First Class service, and with customers paying very high fares for this privilege, airlines know that to retain loyalty they have to exceed every level of expectation of creating the feel-good factor and making the customer feel special," said Plaisted.

"This year we have seen a jump into the top spot by Qatar Airways and this is clear recognition of their new Premium Terminal facilities at the home base airport in Doha, geared totally towards premium customers."

DUBAI, U.A.E., 1st October 2007 - Emirates, the international Dubai-based airline, made history on Monday when EK261 took off from Dubai International Airport en-route to Sao Paulo, Brazil; representing the first ever non-stop flight between the Middle East and South America.

Emirates is using its technically advanced Boeing 777-200LR on the route, with Brazil becoming the 60th country and Sao Paulo the 94th destination on the airline’s rapidly expanding network.

Passengers from over 12 countries, including China, Japan, South Korea, India, Malaysia and Australia, joined the first flight to Sao Paulo after connecting through Dubai from other Emirates flights.

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline & Group said: “Today marks an important milestone for Emirates; not only is it our first gateway in South America, but it means we now fly non-stop to six continents from Dubai.

“Our services provide a perfect match for business people and leisure travellers from the whole Middle East region, Africa, Far East and Australia seeking a convenient route to South America. The service will also offer Dubai as a new tourist and business destination to the relatively untapped market of South America.

“We look forward to developing closer ties with Brazil and we thank the Brazilian Government and airport officials for making this route possible.”
On board the first flight from Dubai to Sao Paulo was His Excellency Flavio Moreira Sapha, the Brazilian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates.

Passengers travelling on the Dubai – Sao Paulo route will enjoy unrivalled in-flight service, including eight luxurious private suites in First Class, 42 of its latest lie-flat seats in Business, and generous space for 216 passengers in Economy.

The aircraft is fitted with the ice Digital Widescreen - Emirates' next generation inflight entertainment system, offering over 1,000 channels of movies, TV and game entertainment on demand - more than any other airline offers, by far.

Captain Stefan Prugner, Emirates’ Deputy Chief Pilot, Boeing, was at the controls of the historic flight, assisted on the flight deck by Captain Murilo Mariozi, First Officer Ali Al Jallaf and First Officer Hassan Asad Hassan Abdulla Abdulwahed.

Departing Dubai at 10:00 hrs, the flight time was 15 hours and 30 minutes with an arrival time at Sao Paulo Guarulhos International Airport of 18:30 hrs on the same day. The return flight, EK262, departs Sao Paulo at 01:25 hrs and arrives in Dubai at 23:05 hrs on the same day.

Emirates Holidays, the tour-operating arm of Emirates Airline, will offer its customers a blend of samba, carnival, natural settings and beach culture. The highlights will be Sao Paulo, the Brazilian vanguard and cultural centre, and Rio de Janeiro, famous for its carnival celebrations, the beat of samba and its vibrant beaches.

Emirates Holidays packages the best of Brazil, taking the discerning traveller on a country tour to discover the most magnificent natural scenarios such as Rio’s Corcovado Mountain, the waterfalls of Iguaçu and the tropical rainforest of the Amazon.

The largest wholesale tour operator in the Middle East is offering great value vacations to Brazil. From AED 6,186 per person, Emirates Holidays provides a three-night stay at the four-star Crowne Plaza in Sao Paulo. The offer, valid until end-December, includes return economy class airfare on Emirates, hotel accommodation in superior room, arrival meet-and-assist in Sao Paulo, transfers between the airport and hotel, and daily breakfasts.

For those who choose to upgrade their package, Emirates Holidays is offering three nights at the five-star Hilton Sao Paulo Morumbi from AED 26,775 per person, including return business class airfare, hotel accommodation in a deluxe room, assistance on arrival, transfers, and daily breakfast.

Delta Air Lines plans to operate non-stop flights between Amman and New York, according to a press statement.

The statement said the air service between Amman's Queen Alia International Airport and New York's John F. Kennedy (JFK) Airport is planned for June 5, 2008.

"The four times weekly flight will be the only non-stop service to the United States from Jordan operated by a US carrier and will offer passengers connections to around 40 business and leisure destinations throughout the United States including Los Angeles, Atlanta, Washington, Tampa and Dallas," said the airline's website.

According to the statement, the new Amman service is one of a number of new transatlantic routes not served by any other major US airline from JFK planned for 2008 including Cairo, Edinburgh, Lagos, Malaga, Dakar, Cape Town (via Dakar) and Nairobi (via Dakar).

Delta's nonstop service between Amman and New York JFK will be the carrier's second Middle Eastern destination, following the launch of Delta's nonstop service between Dubai and Atlanta in June this year.

DAMASCUS: Syrian Arab Airlines, the country's state-run carrier, plans to buy 50 planes from Airbus SAS to modernize its fleet, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Abdallah Dardari said. Initial negotiations with France's government, also involving a reorganization of the airline, were held three weeks ago and a transaction may be completed when French President Nicolas Sarkozy visits Syria in September, Dardari said in an interview in Damascus. The airline would buy single-aisle Airbus A320s as well as twin-aisle A330, A340 and A350 models.

"We are now in agreement with the French to completely restructure the national airline, now that we have an agreement to buy Airbus planes,'' Dardari said. However, he declined to specify an order value or a breakdown by model.

Airlines from Middle Eastern and Asian countries, where economic expansion is beating growth in more developed markets, accounted for most of the $64 billion in orders that Airbus and Boeing Co. won at the Farnborough International Air Show near London in mid-July.

Syria's economy expanded by more than 6 percent last year, and President Bashar Assad forecast in June that growth in 2008 will reach 6.6 percent.

The carrier, known as Syrian Air, was set up in 1946. Its 18-plane fleet includes A320s and single-aisle Boeing 727s, according to the Arab Air Carrier's Association Web site. The airline would lease four planes in the next 18 months and then take delivery of the first 14 Airbus airliners from 2010 to 2018 and a further 36 by 2028, Dardari said.

"We are in discussions,'' Habib Fekih, Airbus's president for the Middle East, said in a telephone interview. "We didn't finish the review yet and are working on the final details and their requirements over the coming years.''

A320-series planes, which offer 107 to 185 seats, are priced at $56 million apiece to $86 million. The four-engine, 380-seat A340 costs $239 million while the planned A350, similar in size to the A330 with 250 to 350 seats, will cost as much as $259 million. Catalog prices don't include discounts that Toulouse, France-based Airbus offers for larger orders.

The US imposed economic sanctions in May 2004, including a ban on trade transactions with the Commercial Bank of Syria, the country's largest bank, as President George W. Bush's administration accused the government of aiding militants in Iraq and destabilizing Lebanon.

The sanctions, preventing Boeing from taking part in recent bidding, have in the past scuttled efforts to overhaul Syrian Air's fleet, Dardari said.

International pressure on Syria has eased since it helped broker an end to an 18-month long political crisis in Lebanon in May. Syria played a key role in Lebanese politics for three decades and withdrew its army in 2005. "I don't think the US has managed to dampen foreign direct investment nor have they succeeded in stopping economic reforms and liberalization,'' Dardari said. "Sanctions have failed especially when they are unilateral.''

Dardari was in France last month to boost economic ties, a week after the presidents of the two countries met for the first time. During his two-day visit, Dardari focused on issues including transportation, electricity, energy including oil and gas exploration, telecommunications and technology.

Part of Syrian Air's multibillion-dollar restructuring may include preparing it for an initial public offering on the Syrian Stock Exchange once the market becomes operational, Dardari said.

"Our main concern today is that state-owned industry and construction companies require a complete overhaul and need to stand on their feet in an open economy,'' Dardari said. "They are no longer monopolies and that's why they aren't making a profit and are facing very tough private-sector competition.''

A new era in aviation in the Middle East is now only days away with the arrival of the first Wataniya Airways A320 aircraft in to Kuwait.

http://www.248am.com/images/plane1.jpg

http://cdn-www.airliners.net/aviation-photos/photos/9/5/5/1448559.jpg

The airline's first aircraft, bearing the distinctive Wataniya Airways livery, has completed its maiden flight from Airbus' headquarters in Toulouse to Kuwait in anticipation of starting its scheduled service from the 24th of January.

The fully-crewed aircraft was welcomed to its new home at the Sheikh Saad Terminal, formerly the Royal Terminal and adjoining Kuwait International Airport, by senior Wataniya Airways management and staff today. The aircraft's historic arrival was commemorated with a traditional water salute from fire fighting teams at the airport to celebrate its momentous arrival.

Abdul Salam Al Bahar, Chairman of Wataniya Airways, said: 'The arrival of the very first aircraft of the Wataniya Airways fleet is a tremendous milestone in Kuwait's aviation history and it was an immensely proud moment for all of us who have been committed to this project from the start to see our first aircraft land and taxi in to the Sheikh Saad Terminal.'

'Kuwait's aviation industry is among the most advanced in the region and I am proud that through Wataniya Airways we have, by establishing a premium airline, been able to contribute towards fulfilling the Amiri mandate of widening the scope of airline carriers for Kuwait,' he added.

The Airbus A 320 left Toulouse, the home of Airbus, earlier this morning piloted by Captain Anthony Jamieson and First Officer Mohammed Al-Gaith with a full complement of Wataniya Airways crew onboard to make this historic maiden flight. They are among the 31 pilots and 51 cabin crew who have now been recruited by Wataniya and have undergone intensive training for 3 months prior to flying to Toulouse for additional training on the aircraft before returning to Kuwait.

The Wataniya Airways Chairman and the CEO, flanked by the rest of the airline team and along with special guests and the Kuwaiti media were waiting at Sheikh Saad Terminal to officially welcome the aircraft to Kuwait.

'This truly is a tremendous occasion as it signifies the official birth of our new premium airline and one that will deliver an outstanding service to a discerning public,' said George Cooper, CEO for Wataniya Airways. 'This historic day marks the culmination of extensive planning and the hard work and dedication of the Wataniya Airways team and I am proud that we are now only days away from our inaugural commercial flight that will offer the best possible travel experience both on the ground and in the air.'

Wataniya Airways will start operations on the 24th of January by providing two daily flights to Dubai. Additional popular destinations for travellers from and to Kuwait will be announced shortly.

The airline is the first and only Kuwaiti commercial airline to operate from the prestigious Sheikh Saad Terminal (formerly known as the Royal Terminal, adjacent to Kuwait International Airport).

From additional legroom to comfortable seats and state-of-the-art in-flight-entertainment systems - Wataniya Airways also prides itself in having a highly trained team and crew that combine professionalism with the personality that is special to Wataniya Airways.

The airline will be using the easily recognizable 'KW' flight code for all its flights and will carry an image of the Kuwait Towers on its tailfin - reinforcing the airline's proud Kuwaiti heritage. The airline is now set to demonstrate that it has what it takes to make its nation proud.

Also remember that the Iraqi Airways are the oldest Airline in the Middle East!

Iraq is ordering 40 new aircrafts from Boeing worth $6 billion dollars. The new Boeing 787 "Dreamliner" and the 747 are on the list.

Iraq also ordered 10 passenger aircrafts from Bombardier CRJ 900.

Air Arabia has high hopes for new hub
Ivan Gale
The National

Air Arabia is set to announce the third hub to join Sharjah and Casablanca.

Air Arabia is set to announce the third hub to join Sharjah and Casablanca. It will probably be somewhere in the Levant or North Africa region, if analysts are to be believed, with Beirut in Lebanon, Egypt and Tunisia each identified as likely locations.

For Air Arabia, a third base signals the beginning of a very important phase of its development. As the growth out of Sharjah is expected to slow, the airline is trying to use its wealth of experience and commercial success, and also funds from its 2007 IPO as a springboard to expand around the region.

It is spreading its brand across the Middle East much as some of the great budget carriers worldwide have done.

Air Asia, one of the world’s biggest budget airlines, has eight bases in South East Asia, while Ryanair of Ireland has 34 in Europe for its 200 aircraft.

As low-cost carriers, these airlines use the point-to-point model – carrying passengers on one leg only. This allows them to maintain just one type of aircraft, as opposed to the big full-service airlines like Lufthansa, British Airways and Emirates, which use a hub-and-spoke model to feed regional traffic into their hub and then carry passengers on higher-margin long-haul flights.

Even though Air Arabia launched its Sharjah base six years ago, the Middle East is still poorly represented by budget airlines, which account for about 7 per cent of regional air travel, according to research by Nomura Securities. This compares with a share of about 25 per cent in Europe, Asia and North America.

With hundreds of millions of potential customers in the Middle East, it’s surprising there has not been more interest in launching budget airlines here for quick regional flights. Short flights are relatively easy affairs to operate, and passengers are generally unfussy if they only have to sit for a few hours.

That means price is king, especially as the downturn has forced companies and individuals to fly less in business class and more in economy.

“The economic slowdown classically favours the low-cost model,” said Scott Darling, an analyst at Nomura Securities in Dubai.

This would suggest that the first airline to branch out through the region and provide a punctual, low-cost and hassle-free flying experience stands to profit considerably.

To date, that airline would seem to be Air Arabia. It operates 24 Airbus A320 aircraft, with most based in Sharjah and a few of its new deliveries flying out of its second hub in Casablanca, which launched in May.

Adel Ali, the group chief executive of Air Arabia, has said he believed each of the three hubs could accommodate 25 aircraft, and he is not stopping there.

“If our plans for all the hubs that we have in mind in the next five years come up and are all approved, then Air Arabia will require up to 100 aeroplanes,” Mr Ali said recently.

As well, Air Arabia has a young fleet, and this is one of the biggest factors that differentiates it from its competition. Many of the state-owned carriers in the region – with the exception of some of the Gulf’s modern and luxurious long-haul airlines – have dismal offerings.

In expressing his optimism with the Casablanca hub, Mr Ali said his competition consisted of other low-cost carriers cramming passengers into old aircraft, or conventional airlines that charged too much.

This focus on new markets has meant that Air Arabia has slowed its growth at Sharjah, although Mr Ali has said there was still enough demand to double its focus on some routes.

Air Arabia’s expansion is by no means guaranteed, however, and its plan to pioneer budget travel in emerging countries could face roadblocks.

Last year, it joined Yeti Airlines to launch a budget subsidiary, flyyeti.com, but pulled out after only a few months, citing political instability and operational issues.

With its success, however, Air Arabia will find itself competing more with other lower-cost players.

In terms of traffic between India and the UAE, the budget carrier Air India Express is the second-largest airline, by weekly seat capacity, after Emirates. Air Arabia is third, offering 13.1 per cent of total capacity, or 29,500 seats per week, according to Innovata.

Jazeera Airways also has grander plans beyond simply operating out of Kuwait City. It plans to open another hub in the Middle East and will announce its selection by the end of the year.

Even flydubai, despite its name, has not explicitly ruled out additional hubs, saying only that it is too early to discuss such matters.

The Dubai start-up, which launched in June, will also be a worthy competitor for travel to the Sharjah and Dubai greater metropolitan area, offering more convenience to Dubai residents because it flies out of Dubai International Airport instead of Sharjah, while also offering a comfortable but low-cost service.

Within a matter of a few years, flydubai aims to grow from four aircraft to 50. When that happens, it is very likely it will compete directly with Air Arabia on many of its main routes in the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent.

But by that time, assuming all goes to plan, Air Arabia should be reaping the fruits of its current expansion efforts and recording growth at some of the Middle East’s up-and-coming airports.

Chicago Becomes Second Destination For Etihad
September 03, 2009 18:06 PM

ABU DHABI, Sept 3 (Bernama) -- Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has started flights from its Abu Dhabi home-base to the American city of Chicago.

Flight EY151 took-off on September 2, landing 14 hours later at Chicago O'Hare International Airport, reported the Emirates News agency (WAM) on Thursday.

For the inaugural flight, Etihad operated its Airbus A340-600 aircraft in the iconic Formula 1 livery, with O'Hare airport fire trucks providing the traditional 'water arch' for the plane on the runway before it docked at terminal five.

The launch of the new service - Etihad's third destination in North America after New York and Toronto - brings to 55 the total number of international destinations served by the Abu Dhabi-based airline.

James Hogan, Etihad Airways' chief executive, said: "We are delighted to start services to Chicago which is our third major destination in North America. Chicago is set to become a key part of our global flight programme with strong traffic expected from cities across our Middle East and Indian Sub-Continent network.

"Etihad's fleet of brand new, fuel-efficient aircraft allows us to launch flights to ultra-long haul destinations, such as Chicago, at the same time providing customers in all three cabins with the most luxurious in-flight experience on offer in the industry."

Richard Olson, US Ambassador to the UAE, said: "The launch of this new service, enhancing strong established links between the UAE and the US, is another very positive example of the strong and expanding commercial relationship that Emiratis and Americans share."

Emirates orders a further 32 Airbus A380s
Dubai based Emirates Airline has ordered a further 32 A380s from Airbus, taking their total firm orders for the iconic flagship of the 21st century to 90 aircraft. The order has a list price of US$ 11.5 billion. The agreement was signed in a ceremony today at the Berlin Air Show witnessed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, by Emirates Airline Group Chairman and CEO His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, and Airbus President and CEO Tom Enders

“This latest order, adding to 58 A380s previously ordered, affirms Emirates’ strategy to become a world leading carrier and to further establish Dubai as a central gateway to worldwide air travel. The A380 is our flagship in terms of passenger comfort, innovation, operating and environmental efficiency and revenue generation. Our latest commitment signals Emirates’ confidence in the growth to come in a thriving aviation sector,” said H.H.Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al- Maktoum.

“Emirates has supported the development of the A380 from the earliest days, and today’s order - the single largest A380 order ever - is the best endorsement I can imagine. On behalf of all of us at Airbus, we thank Emirates for their confidence and support. The A380 is indeed a remarkable eco-efficient aircraft, a profit generator for airlines and a great flying experience for passengers,” said Tom Enders.

Following delivery of their first A380 in July 2008, Emirates now operates ten aircraft serving eight international destinations including London Heathrow, Toronto, Paris, Jeddah, Bangkok, Seoul, Sydney and Auckland. The airline expects the list of destinations to increase as more and more airports around the world are A380 ready. Emirates’ tenth A380, received on 7 June 2010, is on static display at the ILA Berlin Air Show. All Emirates’ A380 are powered by Engine Alliance GP7200 engines and delivered from Hamburg. In Germany more than 30 major suppliers are directly feeding into the A380 programme. The A380 programme alone adds an estimated 40,000 direct, indirect and induced German jobs.

The world’s largest passenger aircraft, the Airbus A380, is also the quietest and most fuel efficient, demonstrably consuming less than three litres of fuel per passenger per 100 kilometres. Nearly 5.5 million passengers have already enjoyed the new experience of flying on-board one of the 30 A380s in service, taking them to 20 major international destinations worldwide in unequalled comfort.

The A380 in-service fleet has accumulated over 15,000 commercial flights, and its operators have unanimously praised its popularity with passengers, higher load factors and superior profitability. With a range of 8,300nm / 15,400 km, and seating from 400 to more than 800 passengers, the A380 is the answer to alleviate traffic congestion at busy airports, cope with growth and minimise environmental impact. A380 firm orders now stand at 234 from 17 customers.

The Expansion of Muscat International Airport

The expansion project for the airport will include a new modern terminal and a new runway that can handle the new Airbus A380. It will include a new control tower with a height of 101 meters, 32 aerobridges, a new cargo termial to handle 200,000 tons of cargo annually, and extra 6,000 car spaces.

The new terminal will be built between the two parallel runways. The new terminal building will have a net floor area of 290,000 sqm. Once the construction of the new runway is completed, upgrade work will progress on the existing one, in order to allow it to handle the larger aircraft.

The first phase of the airport expansion, the new terminal building, is expected to be completed by 2014, which will have a capacity to handle 12 million passengers a year. The final phase, which will expand the airport to handle 48 million passengers a year, is expected to be completed by 2015.

Several site preparatory steps are underway. Work to protect the airport and the runways from water damage that occurs during the very rare rains is the first phase. The grounds are raised by three meters for this purpose, by driving 10-12 million cubic meters of desert sand and crushed rock into the site.

On 8 August 2008, Cowi Group has announced that the designing phase of the airport has reached a major milestone which allows the construction of the new terminal to start in early 2009

Tower at airport 'to be Muscat's tallest structure'

MUSCAT: If everything goes as per the plans, Muscat will be having its tallest edifice - a 97-metre-high air traffic control tower at Muscat International Airport - by the end of October 2012.

The tallest structure is being constructed as part of the redevelopment of Muscat International Airport by British consultant TPS.

TPS is the principal consultant on the project and is providing architectural design for 11 new buildings, including an air transport management complex, a contingency and training centre, plus fire and sea rescue facilities.

The tower is located to the south of the new passenger terminal west pier and linked to the terminal building by a glazed bridge link.

The project is part of a wider redevelopment scheduled for completion in 2014, which will allow the airport to handle 12 million visitors per year.

As the slenderness of the structure will subject it to variable wind forces, TPS brought in Mott Macdonald and RWDI as part of the team to analyse the structural characteristics of the tower, and also to re-evaluate the wind tunnel test data that was previously undertaken. Piling and earthworks for the project started in April this year, with all buildings in this part of the scheme scheduled to be finished by the end of October 2012.

The world's highest control tower currently is Vancouver Harbour Control Tower, situated on top of the 142 meter skyscraper 200 Granville Square in Canada, and the world's tallest free standing control tower is the 132.2 m (434 feet) Suvarnabhumi Airport control tower in Thailand.

Passenger bridges for airports

MUSCAT -- Authorities overseeing the expansion and modernisation of the Muscat and Salalah international airports plan to install a state-of-the-art system of passenger boarding bridges to ensure the fast and efficient throughput of embarking and disembarking passengers.
In all 54 bridges will be installed at the two airports - part of a multibillion-dollar investment that will transform Muscat and Salalah into world-class gateways for tourist and business traffic. A total of 46 movable passenger boarding bridges are envisioned at Muscat, of which 32 will be fitted in pairs to a common fixed bridge and ramp house. The remainder four movable bridges will be fitted in pairs to split fixed bridges and ramp houses.

Designed to serve a total of 28 aircraft stands, the bridges will cater to a broad spectrum of airline types expected to call at the upgraded Muscat International Airport. Three of the aircraft stands will be designed to serve Code F aircraft under the classification of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). Code F aircraft boast wingspans of up 80 metres, corresponding to airplanes as large as the Airbus A380 Superjumbo.

At Salalah International Airport, a total of eight movable passenger boarding bridges are planned. These will be fitted in pairs to split ramp houses. The bridges will be designed to serve aircraft stands which are flexible with multiple centrelines serving up to one Code E (Boeing 747/777 and Airbus A330/340 type) aircraft or two Code C (Boeing 737NG or Airbus A320 type) aircraft.

Four international companies are vying for a contract to supply the passenger boarding bridges to Oman. In the fray are FMC Technologies, Shenzehn CIMC -- TianDa Airport Support, ThyssenKrupp Airport Systems and Shin Maywa Industries. The selected bidder will be required to design, supply, install, test and commission the movable air-bridges at Muscat and Salalah airports.
In addition, the supplier will also take over the operation and maintenance of the bridges. The Ministry of Transport and Communications has so far signed contracts worth around RO 1 billion for the expansion and revamp of the two international gateways. These contracts account for all but one of the major packages comprising 8 Main Contracts (MC) and three Standardised Nationwide Contracts (SNC), that together constitute the ambitious Muscat and Salalah International Airports Redevelopment Project of the Omani government. The passenger boarding bridges -- the only remaining package from amongst the 11 key contracts -- is expected to be awarded shortly.

Arab Bank lends $410 million to Muscat International Airport

AMMAN (JT) - The Arab Bank Group said on Saturday that it had provided credit facilities worth $410 million to three international contractors to carry out the third development phase of Muscat International Airport in Oman.
According to a statement issued by the group yesterday, Oman Arab Bank, Europe Arab Bank and Arab Bank Plc in Bahrain have collectively provided the loan to the consortium of international contracting companies working on the project.

The credit facilities provided include advance payment guarantees, performance guarantees, and letters of credit as well as overdraft facilities, said the statement.

"Providing these kinds of credit facilities is a continuation of the bank's leading role in providing financing solutions that keep pace with the demands of the strategic mega-projects in the region," Abdel Hamid Shoman, executive chairman of Arab Bank, said.
He stressed that the size and diversity of facilities provided reaffirm the extent of trust and solid reputation enjoyed by the bank regionally and globally, which stems from 80 years of experience.

Muscat International Airport is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the Sultanate of Oman with the total cost of around $1.8 billion, according to the statement.

The airport's annual capacity will increase to 20 million passengers, said the statement, adding that the project will be implemented during a period of 38 months.

Salalah International Airport

Salalah Airport (IATA:SLL, ICAO:OOSA) is the Sultanate of Oman's second gateway. It is located on the Salalah coastal plain, 5.5 kilometers northeast of Salalah's city centre. It is currently mostly used as a domestic airport, but during the Khareef season Salalah airport receives numerous charter flights from neighbouring Persian Gulf countries and beyond. At the moment the airport is being expanded and modernized. The initial stage of expansion is scheduled for completion in November 2011, delayed one year mainly because of the cyclone Gonu, and the new terminal will be able to accommodate 2 million passengers per year. Once the airport has been fully expanded the airport will be able to handle 10 million passengers.
