View Full Version : BRISBANE: Festival Towers - 42st/135m/res Gertzy July 3rd, 2006, 02:45 PM ^^ Actually, when i was walking to borders, I saw a women look up at it and she looked like she was about to spew. Thanks Locke for your comments :). SoulvisionQ1 July 3rd, 2006, 03:08 PM One of my family members is actually a property manager for festival...but i do agree with the general opinion that it could make a good homeless shelter... :scouserd: But anyway...give it 2 years and it will blend in and everyone will be looking up at the glory of our Vision god...lol  Redress July 4th, 2006, 11:14 AM It's just another place to stockpile middle class singles and families. Boring bean counters, suits, lawyers etc... The banality of this storage unit is quite apt then eh... andy77aus July 4th, 2006, 12:30 PM It looks a bit like a Korean apartment block, which are about the ugliest going anywhere in the world. BrizzyChris July 4th, 2006, 01:45 PM Geez, it gets worse and worse. Will M on Mary actually be any better though?? m01lim July 4th, 2006, 11:37 PM You guys reckon if we wrote to city council...aka Cambell, whinging about how devine is ruining our city with these shithole buildings they would notice? Public consultation for many projects get very few written feedbacks, so surely if we all wrote in, it would get noticed? :scouserd: It may not stop them, but just maybe council will consider using design as a DA criteria eventually. This building is seriously a travesty. But as long as Devine make their millions they will think nothing of it and continue to build ugly ass buildings like this. :bash: Muse July 5th, 2006, 12:59 AM Geez, it gets worse and worse. Will M on Mary actually be any better though??M could only be, surely! The good thing about M on Mary, is that it will hide FT from certain angles. When Festival was about 1/3 of the way done and they started to paint it, I thought it was a real goer...but now that it is completed, I have have to agree that it *certainly* ain't the best! It's just a 00's version of the many 70s mid-riser bland boxes still standing around town. BTW gertzy. You're pics of it on the previous page do it justice :) Oriolus July 5th, 2006, 05:04 AM I'm going to chuck this pic in here if you don't mind Aussie Bhoy. From the thread Brisbane from level 8 (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=9135121#post9135121) (of the Hilton carpark) http://img422.imageshack.us/img422/4744/p63000588tz.jpg Redress July 5th, 2006, 03:35 PM I actually kind of like it WestEnderBender July 5th, 2006, 05:17 PM The roof looks like an ancient foot-rest, the kind you'd find in a very old office building, beneath a skeleton, under a desk. I hope it is designed to rust... That might add some excitement to it. Gertzy July 5th, 2006, 05:49 PM From that angle, it actually looks good but from others, its just complete crap. Danubis July 5th, 2006, 09:01 PM has anyone noticed any lighting of the roof feature as yet? Leesome July 6th, 2006, 02:34 AM ^^ Lookin at that last pic, I reckon if they had of only used better lookin glass the whole building would have prolly looked pretty decent - like if they had used reflecive either blue or dark green glass without all those white deviders all through it - it'd make a HUGE difference! duke July 6th, 2006, 02:57 AM I think it would have made a huge difference if they had chosen to use dark window frames instead of the clear anodised aluminium. If you look closely at the Charlotte Towers photo taken from the rear, you can see that the window frames used there are dark. SoulvisionQ1 July 6th, 2006, 03:40 AM I think it would have made a huge difference if they sue the shit out of the architect! Leesome July 6th, 2006, 08:51 AM heh heh heh KJBrissy July 13th, 2006, 07:38 AM Well, devine have bought the site at 333 Ann street (the old panorama sky site) for $11.1 million. I hope they don't screw that site up also! Brizbane2 July 13th, 2006, 08:37 AM I think it would have made a huge difference if they sue the shit out of the architect! Why do you make comments like this? Its in no way constructive to the thread or discussion at all. SoulvisionQ1 July 13th, 2006, 09:13 AM Why do you make comments like this? Its in no way constructive to the thread or discussion at all. Why do I make comments like this? because it's true! At first I liked the design but then they just decided to change all the exterior colours and glass!! and that stuffed it up!! Brizbane2 July 14th, 2006, 01:44 AM Last minute changes like this where the exterior finishes are cheapened are not the architects perogative. The architect has no interest in deliberately degrading their work. Remember for the architect high profile projects like this are a marketing tool. The architect would of course prefer to use the best of everything. When a project's materials and finishes change like this at the last moment, for 99% of the time it is because of the developer's penny pinching. In comparison to the other components of a building it is very easy to cut costs through downgrading the quality of finishes, and hence it is the first area that bears the cost saving brunt. I am an architect myself and I see this happening all the time in my office. Architect's got a lot of blame for the finished quality of buildings these days. And some instances can be attributed to the architect's ineptitude, but the vast majority of the downgrades are the result of the cost cutting. We should also note that buildings like festival can take a couple of years to pass from initial costing to built product. And with the cost of labour and material rising very fast, we are seeing many projects cheapened significantly as it comes time for construction. This phenomenon will be a quality inherent in Brisbane's built product for the next few years. Fabian July 14th, 2006, 02:22 AM so where are the most recent pix of this jolly green giant? Took this during the week in Brisbane. Nice tower http://img73.imageshack.us/img73/6876/p71285857eq.jpg KJBrissy July 14th, 2006, 02:32 AM ^^It's interesting that you think it's a nice tower. Most of us up here think it looks disgusting!! I wonder if it is just opinions or whether the cities that we come from has anything to do with it? duke July 14th, 2006, 02:58 AM ^^It's interesting that you think it's a nice tower. Most of us up here think it looks disgusting!! I wonder if it is just opinions or whether the cities that we come from has anything to do with it? I think its just the difference between individuals. One reason why comments should remain objective rather than making personal attacks or smart arsed comments towards someone who voices an alternative opinion. All opinions, objectively expressed, are equally valid even though the majority may disagree with the opinion. As I have said before, I think the window frames and the horizontal dividers are the worst feature of this building. The effect would have been totally different with dark frames and maybe a slight dark tint to the glass. I'm still undecided about the green colour. Locke July 14th, 2006, 09:34 AM Duke you're the biggest Devine fan on this board, so if you got your doubts about it then that's probably saying something. Anyway, let us cast this one off into the wastelands that are the archives seciton. Don't think anyone is going to be taking any more happy snaps of this one. Redress July 14th, 2006, 03:37 PM This ridiculous emotional debate continues. For farks sake - it is not that bad. Why the passion for this building???? sheeez CULWULLA July 14th, 2006, 03:48 PM Took this during the week in Brisbane. Nice tower http://img73.imageshack.us/img73/6876/p71285857eq.jpg thankx fabian. looks ok.dont mind that colour grren. at least its pale. not bright. nice little additon to the end of town. doesnt look tall, but if in Adelaide would be the tallest building! cheer big ears nerazzurri July 15th, 2006, 01:00 PM I actually think it does look tall. :D SoulvisionQ1 July 15th, 2006, 03:27 PM Do archive threads get deleted eventually? so then a tower is no longer in the forum... Leesome July 16th, 2006, 02:43 AM was in the city last night. gotta say, at night - this puppy looks pretty schmick actually. The green gets muted a bit, and all the glass fades in. Might not be a looker in the day, but damn good at night matt_sbs July 16th, 2006, 07:36 AM it doesnt look to bad, the angle that u look at it does change your opinion WestEnderBender July 18th, 2006, 10:20 AM Oh my, this building is growing on me. It is best viewed from King George Square. And another reasonable angle is from Southbank/Victoria Bridge (between Casino and 111 George). I still maintain that some graffiti/street art would look good at the lower levels to cover up the green from streetlevel view, though I doubt that to ever be a possibility in this city. duke July 27th, 2006, 12:15 PM Festival Towers is totally lit up tonight. Danubis July 27th, 2006, 02:41 PM i could see the reflected light on the clouds above it lol... it was very bright!!! but couldnt see festival towers itself :( WestEnderBender July 27th, 2006, 03:32 PM Ha ha is that why the sky is bright tonight... I can see a lot more light from the city than normal (without being able to see the city itself, aside from the Riparian spire) Red Nut August 6th, 2006, 07:35 AM I was at Roma St Parklands today, and swear I could see big signage on top of the building, 'Festival Towers', similar to the way the Casino signage is lit up on top of that building... it's turned an OK building into something worse! I'll try to get a pic tommorow nerazzurri August 7th, 2006, 11:36 AM ANything yet Red Nut? I don't think I've seen the signage yet, though I haven't seen it at night time...unless I am deadset blind and can't see it during day either. :D Red Nut August 7th, 2006, 02:40 PM Maybe I'm the one with sight problems, after all I was looking at it from the Roma st Parklands :bash: Although I'm pretty certain what I saw. I've packed my camera in the bag for work tommorow, will go for a pic then if I get the chance (cue suspensful silence)... Oriolus October 21st, 2006, 05:57 AM cue suspensful silence...No kidding :) Well nobody bothered to mention it but you've been vindicated Red Nut. There is signage on Festival Towers. Pic by SoulvisionQ1 in the 'Random Bris Pics' thread http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i16/soulvisionQ1/254735779_425cf9e9e3_b.jpg Some more pics wouldn't hurt........ Oriolus November 2nd, 2006, 04:01 AM I just saw an ad for Festival Towers on TV. It was different to most apartment ads, it had a kind of crazy-warehouse-fire-sale vibe to it. You know: "It's Devine price madness!!" "These apartments are walking out the door from only $416,000!!" "This offer is never to be repeated!!!!!!" KJBrissy November 2nd, 2006, 04:04 AM Give any indication of quality maybe?? That's hillarious! Maroon Grown November 4th, 2006, 12:49 PM i still cant get over how disapointing festival towers turned out. this is what we traded for festival hall. disgraceful loss of brisbane heritage for an ugly piece of shit! Locke November 12th, 2006, 11:44 AM I know, it is such an eyesore on the skyline. I mean it's not even bland, it's a flat out eyesore! I can't believe in 2006 (not the 1970's) we could throw up such a ugly building. Where are the design standards? Eureka! November 18th, 2006, 04:42 AM From the few pics I've seen it looks horrible IMO. Brendan November 27th, 2006, 09:36 AM Golly..it looks ugly. caish5 December 7th, 2006, 07:28 PM I'll admit it looks foul from the outside, but it is proving rather pleasant to live in! The black window frames on charlotte towers make it look so much nicer, despite them both being a fairly similar design. KJBrissy January 5th, 2007, 08:20 AM Here is Festival Tower (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=383260) in Toronto. I would have much prefered this ;) You beat me to it. ;) http://www.urbandb.com/canada/ontario/toronto/tiff_rendering.jpg http://www.urbandb.com/canada/ontario/toronto/2507fc.jpg It's a pretty nice tower and will suit well. Eureka! January 6th, 2007, 07:08 AM  GRmama January 6th, 2007, 05:55 PM Anything has got to better than Festival Hall:cheers: Oriolus January 10th, 2007, 05:02 AM Even ugly buildings seem to have a angle where they look alright given the right conditions. But looking straight up and with the building glistening in the sun on a beautiful summer day Festival Towers still looks pretty dodgy :( http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/10/1008380svo9.jpg (http://imageshack.us) Messed Up January 11th, 2007, 04:04 AM Its a mess!!! Locke January 12th, 2007, 02:52 PM I've said it before but someone needs to manufacture a big paper bag to stick over this thing. finn January 13th, 2007, 08:33 AM I said it would suck from the beginning - funny thing is that it turned out much much better than I expected! And dare I say that I actually quite like it? ;) Danubis January 13th, 2007, 04:28 PM im suprised everyone hates it?! i like everything except the lit up bit at the top. if nothing else, its at least different to every other building in the cbd. Muse January 22nd, 2007, 11:01 AM I like it too. It is different to anything I recall seeing albeit boxy. Jim856796 March 8th, 2009, 11:05 AM "In 2007, under the managements of The Oaks Group, the majority of rental leases were converted to short-term accommodation stays, effectively forcing out hundreds of residents and converting the building into a hotel." This is bad news for the building. And has the Festival Towers already been converted into a hotel. |
