Skoulikimou October 31st, 2005, 03:09 AM i concur with effer Hviid October 31st, 2005, 03:33 AM I think what we have now is fine... Creating bigger avatars would take up too much server space. And I'd muich rather want a faster-running server with smaller avatars than a slow-running server (like we had before) with bigger avatars. Effer October 31st, 2005, 05:13 AM Do you want bigger avatar and a slower forum or the same avatar in this fast speed...? Bigger avatar, but the speed really doesn't matter. VansTripp October 31st, 2005, 05:34 AM Bigger avatar, but the speed really doesn't matter. Yeah, that right. Æsahættr October 31st, 2005, 05:53 AM You liked it when it took 2 min for a SSC page to load? Jan October 31st, 2005, 08:12 AM no spyguy October 31st, 2005, 04:25 PM Heh The Mad Hatter!! October 31st, 2005, 04:38 PM theres no need for an avatar size increase, there good enough as it is and if they get larger then its going to slow down the forum Jasonhouse October 31st, 2005, 05:32 PM I'm with Jan on this one, as I'm sure that the other Admins probably are as well. Actually, I'm one of those minimalists, who would be happy with no avatars at all. We're supposed to be here to talk up skyscrapers, not obsess over avatar images. Marcanadian October 31st, 2005, 05:44 PM I would like to increase it but then again its the mods decision and Jan said it himself. El_Greco October 31st, 2005, 06:13 PM no Thank you Very Much  @Effer  Blue_Sky October 31st, 2005, 07:08 PM Jan said "No" problem solved lock this thread please :D [Kees] October 31st, 2005, 08:07 PM Non of the avatars look good in 64 by 64 pixels! My avatar looks good. @ Jasonhouse, No avatars is a good idea, I think that it saves a lot of server power so that the site runs better. Better no avatars than waiting. Punjabi Mafia October 31st, 2005, 08:08 PM i think the avatar size should be 100 X 100 in many sites i have seen forums which have this size spyguy October 31st, 2005, 08:13 PM There's no need for it though. It's just a little customizable feature that you have the option of using and isn't necessary at all for the forum. If we're going to slow down the forums, do it for the right reasons and bring back search features, not avatars. Siopao October 31st, 2005, 09:52 PM no gasp Bertez November 1st, 2005, 12:56 AM The size of the current avatar looks classy VansTripp November 1st, 2005, 01:13 AM i think the avatar size should be 100 X 100 in many sites i have seen forums which have this size Yeah, I had noticed many other forum does (outside of SSC). cincobarrio November 1st, 2005, 01:15 AM Doesn't matter to me, as long as you can see the 7 on Mantle's back :) El_Greco November 1st, 2005, 01:21 AM Effer can I ask you something?Ok.Why are you here? You want to talk about scrapers photography etc or you just want to show us your avatar? invincible November 1st, 2005, 02:44 AM It would take up too much server space for a larger avatar. Image dimensions are not proportional to file size. Allowing for larger avatars would have much less impact on performance than something like re-enabling the forum search since it requires very little processing power to serve a static file (avatars) compared to running a search query. The argument against increasing the size is what Jasonhouse suggested - they increase clutter on the page. Effer November 1st, 2005, 03:29 AM Effer can I ask you something?Ok.Why are you here? You want to talk about scrapers photography etc or you just want to show us your avatar? Not only do I want to talk about akyscrapers, but my avatar represents me as a person. :| asohn November 1st, 2005, 03:53 AM a bigger avatar would not look good in my opinion. The current size is big enough. El_Greco November 1st, 2005, 03:53 AM Not only do I want to talk about akyscrapers, but my avatar represents me as a person. :| Ohh.. centralized pandemonium November 1st, 2005, 04:43 AM No avatars is a good idea, I think that it saves a lot of server power so that the site runs better. Better no avatars than waiting. I think its a good idea too. And how about not allowing inline posting, and just giving the links. In the city vs city, inline posting totally fucks up the threads and freezes the browser. Urban Girl November 3rd, 2005, 12:21 AM can we turn off all avatars, signatures, main header etc.. and bring back search tool please:) Effer November 3rd, 2005, 12:31 AM can we turn off all avatars, signatures, main header etc.. and bring back search tool please:) No. [Kees] November 3rd, 2005, 12:51 AM The more I see threads of useless discussions about increasing the avatars or the search option, the more respect I've got for Jan that he still paying the bills to running this website. There's no search options cause the lack of server power. It also cost a week to startup the search option. The forum has minimal feature's, but this forum delivers a sea of information for you and me. Deal with it. :) didu November 3rd, 2005, 02:05 PM I don't think the dimension of the avatar should be restricted. As long as the number of bytes of the avatars are restricted, it should be fine. Put it this way, if we allow pictures of 128x128 bytes, the number of bytes of a picture can increase to 4 times of its original size at most. However, using clever image compression or reduce of colour space -- e.g, from 16-bit-colour to 8-bit-colour, one can reduce the size of the image by 256 times. Since the size of the images are small, there will be hardly any difference visually. Therefore, by allowing people to increase the dimension of their avatars, we might be able to save some spaces ... dubaiflo November 4th, 2005, 12:50 AM actually he's got a point there. allow 100x100, but only 10kb, wouldn't that be ok? didu November 4th, 2005, 02:30 AM ^^ Yeah, that should be fine. El_Greco November 4th, 2005, 03:48 AM no This thread should be locked. Gilgamesh November 4th, 2005, 03:57 AM I don't think the dimension of the avatar should be restricted. Good point! dubaiflo November 4th, 2005, 11:44 AM This thread should be locked. maybe jan did not think abt that possibility. i don't care anyway but if a lot of others do you could think abt it. :) MILIUX November 5th, 2005, 11:34 AM Then to save server space, is there a way to automatically delete accounts which have not been used for say...9 months? I bet it'll save heaps of space by doing that. brunob November 5th, 2005, 11:43 AM The avatar size is just about right. Any bigger and it would distract from the main feature, which aim isn't to showcase an avatar. 'nuff said! Giorgio November 5th, 2005, 02:39 PM Yea most forums have 100x100 but SSC avatars look very short sharp and shiny so to speak. More elegant and not as inyour face while you can still recognize a forumer by there avatar (as i do). Jan November 5th, 2005, 03:40 PM The bigger the avatar, the noisier the forum. We're already easy when it comes to that 'three-lines-maximum-per-signature' rule. If one wants to be recognized around here, forget about showing off your profile and impress us all by posting something constructive or informative. Intoxication November 11th, 2005, 06:27 PM There's no need to increase avatar size. They're fine as they are. elmwood November 16th, 2005, 05:58 PM Avatar tules from cyburbia.org, FWIW: 1.5 Avatars and profile pictures Avatar images must be non-animated, 80 pixels or less vertical and horizontal, and 3 KB or less. Profile pictures must be 250 pixels or less vertical and horizontal, and 25 KB or less. Images must be safe for work, and not offensive or inflammatory. Images cannot be animated. I figured that 80x80 is big enough to allow a good amount of detail, but not so large as to overwhelm the screen, be distracting or look amateurish. Here's a few of the stock 80x80 avatars we use, to give you an idea about the size: http://www.cyburbia.org/forums/images/avatars/dork_side.jpg http://www.cyburbia.org/forums/images/avatars/zippy.gif http://www.cyburbia.org/forums/images/avatars/amiga_kick_start.gif http://www.cyburbia.org/forums/images/avatars/glen_quagmire.gif http://www.cyburbia.org/forums/images/avatars/bills_logo.gif http://www.cyburbia.org/forums/images/avatars/opp.gif Animated avatars are NOT allowed, except during animated avatar weeks we'll have once or twice a year. We want the boards to present a somewhat professional image, and make sure the posts -- the real content -- are the predominant feature in a thread; thus the ban on huge or animated avatars and signature images. I'd prefer to have NO avatars, but planners are visually oriented, and users like having a visual element that can associate a post with a specific user; the avatars are our online faces. My opinion: keep them the current size. If you increase the size, 100X100 looks amateurish; keep it 80x80 or less. Get rid of animated avatars and smileys, or at least reduce the maximum file size so animations are limited. Smaller dimensions and file sizes force users to be more creative in choosing and making avatars. If you increase avatar size, don't allow huge signatures. Sideshow_Bob November 16th, 2005, 06:15 PM I think they are just fine. It isn't that important anyway. -Corey- November 21st, 2005, 09:12 AM 100x100 it would be better. |
