I think what we have now is fine... Creating bigger avatars would take up too much server space. And I'd muich rather want a faster-running server with smaller avatars than a slow-running server (like we had before) with bigger avatars.

theres no need for an avatar size increase,there good enough as it is and if they get larger then its going to slow down the forum

I'm with Jan on this one, as I'm sure that the other Admins probably are as well.

Actually, I'm one of those minimalists, who would be happy with no avatars at all. We're supposed to be here to talk up skyscrapers, not obsess over avatar images.

I would like to increase it but then again its the mods decision and Jan said it himself.

There's no need for it though. It's just a little customizable feature that you have the option of using and isn't necessary at all for the forum. If we're going to slow down the forums, do it for the right reasons and bring back search features, not avatars.

Image dimensions are not proportional to file size. Allowing for larger avatars would have much less impact on performance than something like re-enabling the forum search since it requires very little processing power to serve a static file (avatars) compared to running a search query.

The argument against increasing the size is what Jasonhouse suggested - they increase clutter on the page.

I think its a good idea too. And how about not allowing inline posting, and just giving the links. In the city vs city, inline posting totally fucks up the threads and freezes the browser.

The more I see threads of useless discussions about increasing the avatars or the search option, the more respect I've got for Jan that he still paying the bills to running this website. There's no search options cause the lack of server power. It also cost a week to startup the search option. The forum has minimal feature's, but this forum delivers a sea of information for you and me. Deal with it. :)

of bytes of the avatars are restricted, it should be fine. Put it this way, if we allow pictures
of 128x128 bytes, the number of bytes of a picture can increase to 4 times of its original size
at most. However, using clever image compression or reduce of colour space -- e.g, from
16-bit-colour to 8-bit-colour, one can reduce the size of the image by 256 times. Since the
size of the images are small, there will be hardly any difference visually. Therefore, by allowing
people to increase the dimension of their avatars, we might be able to save some spaces ...

Then to save server space, is there a way to automatically delete accounts which have not been used for say...9 months? I bet it'll save heaps of space by doing that.

The avatar size is just about right.
Any bigger and it would distract from the main feature, which aim isn't to showcase an avatar.

Yea most forums have 100x100 but SSC avatars look very short sharp and shiny so to speak. More elegant and not as inyour face while you can still recognize a forumer by there avatar (as i do).

The bigger the avatar, the noisier the forum. We're already easy when it comes to that 'three-lines-maximum-per-signature' rule. If one wants to be recognized around here, forget about showing off your profile and impress us all by posting something constructive or informative.

There's no need to increase avatar size. They're fine as they are.

I figured that 80x80 is big enough to allow a good amount of detail, but not so large as to overwhelm the screen, be distracting or look amateurish. Here's a few of the stock 80x80 avatars we use, to give you an idea about the size:

Animated avatars are NOT allowed, except during animated avatar weeks we'll have once or twice a year. We want the boards to present a somewhat professional image, and make sure the posts -- the real content -- are the predominant feature in a thread; thus the ban on huge or animated avatars and signature images. I'd prefer to have NO avatars, but planners are visually oriented, and users like having a visual element that can associate a post with a specific user; the avatars are our online faces.

My opinion: keep them the current size. If you increase the size, 100X100 looks amateurish; keep it 80x80 or less. Get rid of animated avatars and smileys, or at least reduce the maximum file size so animations are limited. Smaller dimensions and file sizes force users to be more creative in choosing and making avatars. If you increase avatar size, don't allow huge signatures.

I think they are just fine. It isn't that important anyway.
