As you may know, the government has finally realised that most service accomodation was substandard, if historically interesting in some cases. In the case of Aldershot, the demolition can only be a good thing! Some areas will be refurbishing older buildings of historical value (ie Colchester) and moving Army units to greenfield sites.

Below is somebackground and some maps which show the changes- really quite a massive project when taken as a whole. Loads more info to be found at:

ALDERSHOT
Over the next eight years MoD will redevelop Aldershot Military Town to provide modern accommodation for its employees. This redevelopment will also result in more efficient land use. Single soldiers will get single en-suite bedrooms arranged in six six-bed flats, each with a social, or communal room, utility and storage rooms. New dining centres will combine catering, recreational and social facilities managed by Aspire. There will also be new offices, stores, vehicle garages and workshop buildings. The first works will start at St Omer Barracks, where all the 1960s concrete blocks, including the tower block, will progressively be demolished and replaced by a soldiers’ village. This will have accommodation for over 1000 soldiers, a large dining centre, a gymnasium and an education centre. There will also be a new HQ for Aldershot Garrison. This will take several years to be built out.
Along the Basingstoke Canal from St Omer, the two transport barracks, Travers and Gale will have additional stores built. Part of the old workshop site next to the Guildford to Reading line will be redeveloped for military use but the remainder of it and nearly all of the remaining barrack areas south of the Canal will be sold by MoD for private housing development. Later phases of the works will include additional sports facilities around Queen’s and Prince’s Avenues, more single soldiers’ accommodation in the barracks north of the Canal and the redevelopment of Hammersley Barracks
It is intended that the first construction work in St Omer Barracks will start later this year. As new barracks are completed old ones, such as those in Montgomery Lines, will be emptied and sold. The Cambridge Military Hospital is expected to be one of the early sales but some MoD land may not be sold for another ten years. MoD and Rushmoor Borough are working together on developing an overall plan for the redevelopment of this part of Aldershot and MoD will in due course submit an application for outline planning permission for its surplus land.
Aldershot Garrison has strong links with local communities in Rushmoor Borough. Through Project Allenby/Connaught, as well as participation in the Aldershot Centre for Health, the MoD is demonstrating its commitment to strengthening these links further and to keeping the strength of the Garrison at similar levels as it is today.

COLCHESTER
There has been an Army Garrison in Colchester for centuries. Following the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to construct a modern replacement garrison, the town’s long association with the Army looks set to continue.
The Army’s presence makes a significant contribution to the vitality and economic wellbeing of the borough, by providing 5,000 direct jobs and indirectly supporting the local service sector. The new garrison will safeguard these jobs for the foreseeable future. In addition to the new purpose-built garrison, the existing garrison site will be redeveloped to provide a new urban village based around Abbey Field, including:
• 2,600 new homes
• new employment uses
• additional sports, leisure and community facilities
• potential for an integrated, sustainable transport system
• retention of, and alternative uses for the listed buildings on the site

Tidworth & Bulford Garrison
Most of the development for Bulford will be on the eastern side of the barracks. Personnel will increase by about 660 mainly due to the arrival of two further units. Old style accommodation will be replaced and/or improved and new community facilities provided, including leisure and health centres.
Swinton Barracks at Perham Down currently accommodates 22 Engineer Regiment. To meet the needs of the SDR a second engineer unit will be accommodated. About a quarter of the buildings are sub-standard and will be replaced including existing soldiers’ accommodation. The technical area will be extended and a new Warrant Officers’ and Senior Non Commissioned Officers’ Mess will be provided.
At Tidworth the bulk of the development will take place ‘behind the wire’ to meet with major units increasing from six to eight. Analysis showed that some 40% of the building will need replacement, much of it soldier’s accommodation. New buildings include offices, dining centres and a major gymnasium/rehabilitation centre. Additional community facilities, e.g. a new theatre/cinema, are also planned.
