Africa Theme Park Resort, South Africa

Together with its South African partner Stewart Scott International, and with support from the Dutch government through the PESP fund (Program for Economic Support for Projects), DHV has conducted a feasibility study for a large Africa Theme Park Resort in South Africa.

The study, completed at the end of last year, covered the environmental, structural engineering financial and economic aspects of the project, and concludes that it is viable in every respect. The theme park, in which 53 African countries are to present themselves and their people, is intended to place Africa firmly on the world map. It will cover an area of 613 hec-tares, located 15 kilometers from Johannesburg International Airport. The resort will consist of three different areas: Africa The Park, SpacePort Africa, and Water Park. The plan also includes three hotels, a golf complex, a conference center, a health spa and 51 hectares of retail facilities and private housing. Construction is expected to begin later this year with completion in 2008, in good time for the World Cup football competition being held in South Africa in 2010.

WOW, an African style Disney World? Awesome! It just might work and help preserve & showcase african cultures to the world. Espescially since not many people want to visit "wild" Africa, because of lack of infrastructure, famine and safety issues. But in a safe, peaceful environment one could travel Africa in a short time frame and see what the continent has on offer. A great idea for sure.

I did a post about this development a while back but haven't followed up because things are moving incredibly slowly. I remember us having a debate as to whether Gauteng could absorb another theme park given the growth of Gold Reef City.

As was said in the article, they've recently completed environmental assessibility reports for Africa the Park but have yet to launch the development. Apparently, negotiations are at a sensitive stage, so no info is being made public, but they're no doubt being held back by red tape and the like.

Here's the website.. http://www.africathemepark. I really hope they can get it off the ground cos it looks awesome!

Just bumping this up to the front to remind everyone... we should hopefully be hearing more about them soon. The website (http://www.africethemepark.com) has gone offline, but Platinum Planet says that we should expect 'ROD' (no clue what that is?) in November.

you know, when there were talks about closing Ratanga in Cape Town, I figured, why not turn it into something that the world doesnt have...like an African cultural park? It would be such a waste to deconstruct the complex. The space park is also very cool, since we can also boast of having had a man in space. Now its just a pity that Joburg will get this. Come on Dubai guys, jump ahead, and built a Capeland!

Harberk, I think that its good not to have it in Cape as CT already have got the tourist atraction sites. I think all these projects need to be speard accross the provinces and I must say big ups to De Beers my fascilitating and funding the project of turning the big hole in Kimberely to tourist attraction site. Protea Hotels will also be construction a hotel there.

I beleive that each and every province should have a source of tourist attracting site and should be just one thing but a variety of things so that tourists can spend a minimu of 2 days.

^I hear you. Ok then, maybe PlanetAfrica should go to PE. I foresee great things for the Bay, provided corrupt politicians stay out of it. Durban has Ushaka, Joburg has Sun City & Gold Reef. Pretoria...has Voortrekker Monument!
Do you have more on the Kimberley plans?

Would be nice to spread them out but I think Jo'burg is the only place in SA that could support a sizeable themepark like this.

I doubt it'll ever happen. And it looks awful. For starters, what does the Space Shuttle have to do with Africa?

Very kitch indeed... And I don't think it is sustainable in the long run... I emailed these guys about a year ago and then I got a very "passionate" email stating that it is being planned and that I will hear good news soon. Actually im glad we never got the good news.

this dodo was never meant to hatch.

SA has better things to offer

theme parks are very difficult and costly to sustain and maintain. just look at gold reef city. it looked so shabby when i was there in january with area's of half hearted construction left open to the public. in certain parts it looked like i was witnessing the aftermath of demolition and not a fun day out. for a park to be successful it has to be continually in tip top shape and constantly renewing itself.

sad this is not happening, but at the same time its best that it was never built.

yeah and same with Ratanga Junction.... its really sad. only opens for school holidays now. so now they are trying to market it as a conference venue..... :ohno:

The business case for theme parks has to be really well thought out, 'cause these things are nice to have but making them financially sustainable is another story. Remember the Gigantic Millennium Dome in London?

GAUTENG THEME PARK PLANS DRIFT OFF

TravelHub (www.travelhub.co.za) -

A MAJOR theme park development, planned for Kempton Park in Gauteng four years ago, has been derailed and may well be abandoned.

The 630ha park was to comprise three theme parks, a golf course, retail developments, hotels, conferencing facilities and a wellness spa. The initial cost of the project was predicted at around R3bn and would handle up to three million visitors per year.

Africa Theme Park Resort director, Hans Deuze, said that the company had been waiting for over five years for the Ekurhuleni Municipality to approve plans and is thinking of calling off the entire project.

Deuze claims that the municipality’s incompetence and his company’s constant fight with red tape is a signal for the company to move on. He says there is a possibility of exploring other cities for this opportunity. “There are major tourist developments in KwaZulu Natal and we will probably move in that direction.”

The municipality were very tight-lipped when asked for a response to Deuze's comments, stating only:" The agreement lapsed at the end of October 2008, this project is not going ahead."

That's what happens when nincompoops and irresponsible individuals run the show. Some how I think there need to be penalties to municipalities which in some way will tap into salaries of non-performers and irresponsible bustards like these ones.

This project was gonna create thousands of jobs for our people and contribute to the GDP of the region and the country. What the fuck is wrong with this people?

Durbsboi

Eish, Pule maybe you should take over the municipalities...

Lydon

Ah, so it wasn't so much the project that was the problem as it was the municipalities...pity.
